Suppression of protein aggregation by gold nanoparticles: a new way to store and transport proteins

Suppression of the aggregation of proteins has tremendous implications in biology and medicine. In the pharmaceuticals industry, aggregation of therapeutically important proteins and peptides while stored, reduces the efficacy and promptness of action leading to, in many instances, intoxication of the patient by the aggregate. Here we report the effect of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) in preventing the thermal and chemical aggregation of two unrelated proteins of different size, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH, 84 kDa) and insulin (6 kDa), respectively, in physiological pH. Our principal observation is that there is a significant reduction (up to 95%) in the extent of aggregation of ADH and insulin in the presence of gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs). Aggregation of these proteins at micromolar concentration is prevented using nanomolar or less amounts of gold nanoparticles which is remarkable since chaperones which prevent such aggregation in vivo are required in micromolar quantity. The prevention of aggregation of these two different proteins under two different denaturing environments has established the role of Au-NPs as a protein aggregation prevention agent. The extent of prevention increases rapidly with the increase in the size of the gold nanoparticles. Protein molecules get physisorbed on the gold nanoparticle surface and thus become inaccessible by the denaturing agent in solution. This adsorption of proteins on AuNPs has been established by a variety of techniques and assays.

Sarmiento y su visión militar

Resumen: Las grandes naciones se construyen a partir de la visión alentadora de un grupo de hombres, que en la comprensión cabal de la realidad son capaces de encontrar las soluciones necesarias. Para el estadista ningún asunto puede reconocerse sin su relación con el otro y todos adquieren importancia en tanto puedan contribuir al desarrollo nacional y el bienestar ciudadano. En Sarmiento, la educación habría de ser el origen, y su realización, el instrumento inapelable en la construcción de un estado moderno. En este esquema las instituciones aparecen como los pilares sobre los que se apoya la verdadera esencia del espíritu nacional, y el único sostén legítimo del Estado; de allí la preocupación por su consolidación. A la organización de la política, de la justicia y de la administración en general, Sarmiento sumó un interés medular en torno al fortalecimiento del Ejército y la Armada, que tuvo como punto de partida las guerras civiles argentinas, continuidad con la experiencia adquirida en los Estados Unidos y su afirmación tras las consecuencias de la guerra con el Paraguay. Esta investigación aborda los aspectos más profundos de su pensamiento castrense, materializado en obra a partir de un agudo trabajo de organización desarrollado a lo largo de sus servicios militares, y en la presidencia de la Nación con la adquisición de modernos armamentos y la creación de las primeras escuelas para oficiales.

Ecology of east Florida sea turtles: Proceedings of the Cape Canaveral, Florida Sea Turtle Workshop Miami, Florida February 26-27, 1985

The Cape Canaveral, Florida, marine ecosystem is unique. There are complex current and temperature regimes that form a faunal transition zone between Atlantic tropical and subtropical waters. This zone is rich faunistically and supports large commercial fISheries for fish, scallops, and shrimp. Canaveral is also unique because it has large numbers of sea turtles year-round, this turtle aggregation exhibiting patterned seasonal changes in numbers, size frequency, and sex ratio. Additionally, a significant portion of this turtle aggregation hibernates in the Canaveral ship channel, a phenomenon rare in marine turtle populations. The Cape Canaveral area has the largest year-round concentration of sea turtles in the United States. However, the ship channel is periodically dredged by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in order to keep Port Canaveral open to U.S. Navy vessels, and preliminary surveys showed that many sea turtles were incidentally killed during dredging operations. In order for the Corps of Engineers to fulfill its defense dredging responsibilities, and comply with the Endangered Species Act of 1973, an interagency Sea Turtle Task Force was formed to investigate methods of reducing turtle mortalities. This Task Force promptly implemented a sea turtle research plan to determine seasonal abundance, movement patterns, sex ratios, size frequencies, and other biological parameters necessary to help mitigate dredging conflicts in the channel. The Cape Canaveral Sea Turtle Workshop is a cooperative effort to comprehensively present research results of these important studies. Whales and Sonar: Environmental Exemptions for the Navy's Mid-Frequency Active Sonar Training.

Mid-frequency active (MFA) sonar emits pulses of sound from an underwater transmitter to help determine the size, distance, and speed of objects. The sound waves bounce off objects and reflect back to underwater acoustic receivers as an echo. MFA sonar has been used since World War II, and the Navy indicates it is the only reliable way to track submarines, especially more recently designed submarines that operate more quietly, making them more difficult to detect. Scientists have asserted that sonar may harm certain marine mammals under certain conditions, especially beaked whales. Depending on the exposure, they believe that sonar may damage the ears of the mammals, causing hemorrhaging and/or disorientation. The Navy agrees that the sonar may harm some marine mammals, but says it has taken protective measures so that animals are not harmed. (PDF contains 20 pages)

Measuring the influence of customer-based store brand equity in the purchase intention

[EN] Store brands account for and important market share in the Spain and a further increase in expected in the next years due to the downturn. However, there is lack of research on store brand customer-based Brand Equity. This study attempts to propose an integrated model of Brand Equity in store or retailer brands, based on Aaker s well-known conceptual model. We propose a consumer-based model, including the main sources or dimensions of Brand Equity and considering the intention to purchase as a consequence. Based on a sample of 362 consumers and 5 store brands, structural equation modeling is used to test research hypotheses. The results obtained reveal that store brand awareness, loyalty along with store brand perceived quality have a significant influence on consumers intention to purchase store brands. Our study suggests that marketers and marketing managers from retailing companies should carefully consider the Brand Equity components when designing their brand strategies, and develop marketing activities in order to enhance their brands awareness.

Contabilidade de custos aplicada à Administração Pública Brasileira um estudo comparativo sobre os sistemas de custeio utilizados pela Marinha, Exército e Aeronáutica em seus laboratórios químicos farmacêuticos

Este trabalho busca fazer um estudo comparativo dos sistemas de custeio utilizado pelos laboratórios químico farmacêutico da Marinha, Exército e Aeronáutica, Organizações Militares industriais das Forças Armadas, pertencentes à Administração Pública Direta. O desenvolvimento deste trabalho se faz por meio de um estudo de caso realizado nos laboratórios citados, com a finalidade de verificar quais os sistemas de custeio que utilizam, se estão de acordo com os referenciais teóricos, com que finalidade utilizam esses sistemas, quais informações geradas para tomada de decisão e se os sistemas utilizados estão de acordo com os já em funcionamento em outros órgãos da administração pública e se é o recomendado pelos especialistas. Neste estudo são levantadas as importâncias da utilização da contabilidade de custos na administração Públicas, a experiência em outros órgãos da administração e a implantação do Sistema Gerencial de Custos do Exército (SISCUSTO).

Drawn to the Sea: Charles Bradford Hudson (1865-1939), Artist, Author, Army Officer, with Special Notice of His Work for the United States Fish Commission and Bureau of Fisheries

The biography of Charles Bradford Hudson that follows this preface had its seeds about 1965 when I (VGS) was casually examining the extensive files of original illustrations of fishes stored in the Division of Fishes, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. I happened upon the unpublished illustration of a rainbow trout by Hudson and was greatly impressed with its quality. The thought occurred to me then that the artist must have gone on to do more than just illustrate fishes. During the next 20 years I occasionally pawed through those files, which contained the work of numerous artists, who had worked from 1838 to the present. In 1985, I happened to discuss the files with my supervisor, who urged me to produce a museum exhibit of original fish illustrations. This I did, selecting 200 of the illustrations representing 21 artists, including, of course, Hudson. As part of the text for the exhibit, Drawn from the Sea, Art in the Service of Ichthyology, I prepared short biographies of each of the artists. The exhibit, with an available poster, was shown in the Museum for six months, and a reduced version was exhibited in U.S. and Canadian museums during the next 3 years.

Depicting the future strategic plans of the Royal Australian Navy using a roadmapping framework as a visual composite canvas

Strategic planning can be an arduous and complex task; and, once a plan has been devised, it is often quite a challenge to effectively communicate the principal missions and key priorities to the array of different stakeholders. The communication challenge can be addressed through the application of a clearly and concisely designed visualisation of the strategic plan - to that end, this paper proposes the use of a roadmapping framework to structure a visual canvas. The canvas provides a template in the form of a single composite visual output that essentially allows a 'plan-on-a-page' to be generated. Such a visual representation provides a high-level depiction of the future context, end-state capabilities and the system-wide transitions needed to realise the strategic vision. To demonstrate this approach, an illustrative case study based on the Australian Government's Defence White Paper and the Royal Australian Navy's fleet plan will be presented. The visual plan plots the in-service upgrades for addressing the capability shortfalls and gaps in the Navy's fleet as it transitions from its current configuration to its future end-state vision. It also provides a visualisation of project timings in terms of the decision gates (approval, service release) and specific phases (proposal, contract, delivery) together with how these projects are rated against the key performance indicators relating to the technology acquisition process and associated management activities. © 2013 Taylor & Francis.
