The main goal in this work is to conduct a quantitative analysis of the mechanical stir casting process for obtaining particulate metal matrix composites. A combined route of stirring at semi-solid state followed by stirring at liquid state is proposed. A fractional factorial design was developed to investigate the influence and interactions of factors as: time, rotation, initial fraction and particle size, on the incorporated fraction. The best incorporations were obtained with all factors at high levels, as well as that very long stirring periods have no strong influence being particle size and rotation the most important factors on the incorporated fraction. Particle wetting occurs during stirring at semisolid state, highlighting the importance of the interactions between particles and the alloy globularized phase. The role of the alloying element Mg as a wettability-promoting agent is discussed. The shear forces resulting from the stirring system is emphasized and understood as the effect of rotation itself added to the propeller blade geometry.

Nickel nanoparticles into silica-carbon matrix composites were prepared by using the polymeric precursor method. The effects of the polyester type and the time of pyrolysis on the mesoporosity and nickel particle dispersion into non-aqueous amorphous silica-carbon matrix were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, adsorption/desorption isotherms and TEM. A well-dispersed metallic phase could be only obtained by using ethylene glycol. Weightier polyesters affected the pyrolysis process due to a combination of more amounts of carbonaceous residues and delaying of pyrolysis process. The post-pyrolyzed composites were successfully cleaned at 200 degrees C for I h in oxygen atmosphere leading to an increase in the surface area and without the occurrence of carbon combustion or nickel nanoparticles oxidation. The matrix composites presented predominantly mesoporous with pore size well defined in 38 angstrom, mainly when tetraethylene glycol was used as polymerizing agent. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Mechanical strength of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibres and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix composites were studied with particular interest on the effects of oxygen and argon plasma treated fibres. PET. fibres were treated in a radio frequency plasma reactor using argon or oxygen for different treatment times to increase the interface adhesion. Fibre volume fraction was measured through digital image analysis. Elastic moduli resulted between 3 GPa for untreated to 6 GPa for treated composites. Tensile tests on PET fibres showed that plasma treatment caused a decrease in average tensile strength compared to untreated fibres. Fracture analysis confirmed the increase in interfacial adhesion due to plasma treatment. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study assessed the surface microhardness of compound resins cured by different light sources. Methods Three micro hybrid (Vit-l-escence, Amelogen Plus, Opallis) and one nanoparticle (Filtek Z350, 3M ESPETM Dental Products, St. Paul, USA) compound resins were selected. The resins were polymerized by a halogen light unit (Ultralux, Dabi Atlante, Ribeirão Preto, Brasil) with two tips, one semi-guided made of glass and another of painted acrylic and a LED-based source (UltraLume 2, Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA). Specimens constructed from a circular aluminum matrix were photopolymerized for 40 second after they received the compound resin and stored dry for 24 hours. After this period, a Vickers surface microhardness assay was performed, measuring the top (hardness 1) and base (hardness 2) surfaces four times each. Variance analyses were complemented by Newman-Keuls method, with significance set at 5%. Results The Opallis (FGM, Santa Catarina, Brasil) resin subjected to UltraLume 2 (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) obtained the lowest mean hardness values for the top surface. The Vit-l-escence (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) compound cured by Led UltraLume 2 (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) and by Ultralux PCP (Dabi Atlante, Ribeirão Preto, Brasil) halogen light obtained the highest mean hardness, followed by the Filtek Z350 (3M ESPETM Dental Products, St. Paul, USA) resin subjected to UltraLume 2 (Ultradent® South Jordan, USA). The Opallis (FGM, Santa Catarina, Brasil) resin cured by LED UltraLume 2 (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) also obtained the lowest mean hardness for the base surface and the Vit-L-Escence (Ultradent®, South Jordan, USA) resin obtained the highest value, followed by Amelogen Plus, when cured by Ultralux (Dabi Atlante, Ribeirão Preto, Brasil) using the semi-guided tip. Conclusion The polymerization and, consequently, the microhardness achieved by the LED unit was equivalent to those achieved by conventional halogen units for three of the four composites tested.

Syntactic Functionally Graded Metal Matrix Composites (SFGMMC) are a type of composites reinforced by microballoons exhibiting a graded reinforcement distribution. These materials constitute a promising new generation of lightweight structural materials for aerospace, marine and shielding/insulation applications. In this work, A356 alloy reinforced with silica-alumina microballoons (SiO2-Al2O3) was processed by casting techniques. The influence of the microballoon distribution gradient on the corrosion behaviour of the composite was investigated by potentiodynamic polarisation and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Composite surfaces were analysed before and after testing by Optical Microscopy (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to determine the influence of microstructural changes.

Alumina/alumina wear couple can lower the wear rates and thus metallic ion releasing on load bearing metallic implant materials. However, the low fracture toughness of ceramics is still a major concern. Therefore, the present study aims to process and to triboelectrochemically characterise the 5 and 10 vol.-%Al2O3 reinforced CoCrMo matrix composites. Corrosion and tribocorrosion behaviour of the composites were investigated in 8 g L−1 NaCl solution at body temperature. Corroded and worn surfaces were investigated by a field emission gun scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. After tribocorrosion experiments, wear rates were calculated using a profilometer. Results suggest that Al2O3 particle addition decreased the tendency of CoCrMo alloy to corrosion under both static and tribocorrosion conditions. However, no significant influence on the corrosion and wear rates was observed in composites mainly due to increased porosity and insufficient matrix/reinforcement bonding.

Thermoplastic starch (TPS) from industrial non-modified corn starch was obtained and reinforced with natural strands. The influence of the reinforcement on physical-chemical properties of the composites obtained by melt processing has been analyzed. For this purpose, composites reinforced with different amounts of either sisal or hemp strands have been prepared and evaluated in terms of crystallinity, water sorption, thermal and mechanical properties. The results showed that the incorporation of sisal or hemp strands caused an increase in the glass transition temperature (T-g) of the TPS as determined by DMTA. The reinforcement also increased the stiffness of the material, as reflected in both the storage modulus and the Young's modulus. Intrinsic mechanical properties of the reinforcing fibers showed a lower effect on the final mechanical properties of the materials than their homogeneity and distribution within the matrix. Additionally, the addition of a natural latex plasticizer to the composite decreased the water absorption kinetics without affecting significantly the thermal and mechanical properties of the material. The increasing use of Fiber Reinforced methods for strengthening existing brick masonry walls and columns, especially for the rehabilitation of historical buildings, has generated considerable research interest in understanding the failure mechanism in such systems. This dissertation is aimed to provide a basic understanding of the behavior of solid brick masonry walls unwrapped and wrapped with Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix Composites. This is a new type of composite material, commonly known as FRCM, featuring a cementitious inorganic matrix (binder) instead of the more common epoxy one. The influence of the FRCM-reinforcement on the load-carrying capacity and strain distribution during compression test will be investigated using a full-field optical technique known as Digital Image Correlation. Compression test were carried on 6 clay bricks columns and on 7 clay brick walls in three different configuration, casted using bricks scaled respect the first one with a ratio 1:2, in order to determinate the effects of FRCM reinforcement. The goal of the experimental program is to understand how the behavior of brick masonry will be improved by the FRCM-wrapping. The results indicate that there is an arching action zone represented in the form of a parabola with a varying shape according to the used configuration. The area under the parabolas is considered as ineffectively confined. The effectively confined area is assumed to occur within the region where the arching action had been fully developed.

Foundry aluminum alloys play a fundamental role in several industrial fields, as they are employed in the production of several components in a wide range of applications. Moreover, these alloys can be employed as matrix for the development of Metal Matrix Composites (MMC), whose reinforcing phases may have different composition, shape and dimension. Ceramic particle reinforced MMCs are particular interesting due to their isotropic properties and their high temperature resistance. For this kind of composites, usually, decreasing the size of the reinforcing phase leads to the increase of mechanical properties. For this reason, in the last 30 years, the research has developed micro-reinforced composites at first, characterized by low ductility, and more recently nano-reinforced ones (the so called metal matrix nanocomposite, MMNCs). The nanocomposites can be obtained through several production routes: they can be divided in in-situ techniques, where the reinforcing phase is generated during the composite production through appropriate chemical reactions, and ex situ techniques, where ceramic dispersoids are added to the matrix once already formed. The enhancement in mechanical properties of MMNCs is proved by several studies; nevertheless, it is necessary to address some issues related to each processing route, as the control of process parameters and the effort to obtain an effective dispersion of the nanoparticles in the matrix, which sometimes actually restrict the use of these materials at industrial level. In this work of thesis, a feasibility study and implementation of production processes for Aluminum and AlSi7Mg based-MMNCs was conducted. The attention was focused on the in-situ process of gas bubbling, with the aim to obtain an aluminum oxide reinforcing phase, generated by the chemical reaction between the molten matrix and industrial dry air injected in the melt. Moreover, for what concerns the ex-situ techniques, stir casting process was studied and applied to introduce alumina nanoparticles in the same matrix alloys. The obtained samples were characterized through optical and electronic microscopy, then by micro-hardness tests, in order to evaluate possible improvements in mechanical properties of the materials.

The fracture properties of high-strength spray-formed Al alloys were investigated, with consideration of the effects of elemental additions such as zinc, manganese, and chromium and the influence of the addition of SiC particulate. Fracture resistance values between 13.6 and 25.6 MPa (m)1/2 were obtained for the monolithic alloys in the T6 and T7 conditions, respectively. The alloys with SiC particulate compared well and achieved fracture resistance values between 18.7 and 25.6 MPa (m)1/2. The spray-formed materials exhibited a loss in fracture resistance (KI) compared to ingot metallurgy 7075 alloys but had an improvedperformance compared to high-solute powder metallurgy alloys of similar composition. Characterization of the fracture surfaces indicated a predominantly intergranular decohesion, possibly facilitated by the presence of incoherent particles at the grain boundary regions and by the large strength differentialbetween the matrix and precipitate zone. It is believed that at the slip band-grain boundary intersection, particularly in the presence of large dispersoids and/or inclusions, microvoid nucleation would be significantly enhanced. Differences in fracture surfaces between the alloys in the T6 and T7 condition were observed and are attributed to inhomogeneous slip distribution, which results in strain localization at grain boundaries. The best overall combination of fracture resistance properties were obtained for alloys with minimum amounts of chromium and manganese additions.

Manufacturing of high performance polymer-matrix composites is normally carried out by means of autoclave using prepreg tapes stacked and consolidated under the simultaneous application of pressure and temperature. High autoclave pressures reduce the porosity in the laminate and ensure excellent mechanical properties. However, this manufacturing route is expensive in terms of capital investment and processing time, hindering its application in many industrial sectors. This fact has driven the demand of alternative out-of-autoclave processing routes. These techniques claim to produce composite parts faster and at lower cost but the mechanical performance is also reduced due to the lower fiber content and to the higher porosity. Corrient numerical models are able to simulate the mechanisms of void growth in polymer-matrix composites processed in autoclave. However these models are restricted to small spherical voids surrounded by a viscous resin. Their validity is not proved for long cylindrical voids in a viscous matrix surrounded by aligned fibers, the standard morphology observed in out-of-autoclave composites. In addition, there is an experimental evidence of the detrimental effect of voids on the mechanical performance of composites but, there is detailed information regarding the influence of curing conditions on the actual volume fraction, shape and spatial distribution of voids within the laminate. The standard techniques of microstructural characterization of composites (optical or electron microscopy, X-ray radiography, ultrasonics) provide information in two dimensions and are not always suitable to determine the porosity or void population. Moreover, they can not provide 3D information. The effect of curing cycle on the development of voids during consolidation of AS4/8552 prepregs at low pressure by compression molding was studied in unidirectional and multiaxial panels. They were manufactured using three different curing cycles carefully designed following the rheological and thermal analysis of the raw prepregs. The void volume fraction, shape and spatial distribution were analyzed in detail by means of X-ray computed microtomography, which has demonstrated its potential for analyzing the microstructural features of composites. It was demonstrated that the final void volume fraction depended on the evolution of the dynamic viscosity throughout the cycle. Most of the initial voids were the result of air entrapment and wrinkles created during lay-up. Differences in the final void volume fraction depended on the processing conditions for unidirectional and multiaxial panels. Voids were rod-like shaped and were oriented parallel to the fibers and concentrated in channels along the fiber orientation. X-ray computer tomography analysis of voids along the fiber direction showed a cellular structure with an approximate cell diameter of 1 mm. The cell walls were fiber-rich regions and porosity was localized at the center of the cells. This porosity distribution within the laminate was the result of inhomogeneous consolidation. This information is critical to optimize processing parameters and to provide inputs for virtual testing and virtual processing tools. In addition, the matrix-controlled mechanical properties of the panels were measured in order to establish the relationship between processing conditions and mechanical performance. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and the interlaminar toughness (GIc and GIIc) were selected to evaluate the effect of porosity on the mechanical performance of unidirectional panels. The ILSS was strongly affected by the porosity when the void contents was higher than 1%. The same trends were observed in the case of GIIc while GIc was insensitive to the void volume fraction. Additionally, the mechanical performance of multiaxial panels in compression, low velocity impact and compression after impact (CAI) was measured to address the effect of processing conditions. The compressive strength decreased with porosity and ply-clustering. However, the porosity did not influence the impact resistance and the coompression after impact strength because the effect of porosity was masked by other factors as the damage due to impact or the laminate lay-up. Finally, the effect of the processing conditions on the compaction behavior of unidirectional AS4/8552 panels manufactured by compression moulding was simulated using the finite element method, as a first approximation to more complex and accurate models for out-of autoclave curing and consolidation of composite laminates. The model parameters were obtained from rheological and thermo-mechanical experiments carried out in raw prepreg samples. The predictions of the thickness change during consolidation were in reasonable agreement with the experimental results.
