Previous studies have found beneficial effects of aromatherapy massage for agitation in people with dementia, for pain relief and for poor sleep. Children with autism often have sleep difficulties, and it was thought that aromatherapy massage might enable more rapid sleep onset, less sleep disruption and longer sleep duration. Twelve children with autism and learning difficulties (2 girls and 10 boys aged between 12 years 2 months to 15 years 7 months) in a residential school participated in a within subjects repeated measures design: 3 nights when the children were given aromatherapy massage with lavender oil were compared with 14 nights when it was not given. The children were checked every 30 min throughout the night to determine the time taken for the children to settle to sleep, the number of awakenings and the sleep duration. One boy's data were not analyzed owing to lengthy absence. Repeated measures analysis revealed no differences in any of the sleep measures between the nights when the children were given aromatherapy massage and nights when the children were not given aromatherapy massage. The results suggest that the use of aromatherapy massage with lavender oil has no beneficial effect on the sleep patterns of children with autism attending a residential school. It is possible that there are greater effects in the home environment or with longer-term interventions.

Optical characteristics of stirred curd were simultaneously monitored during syneresis in a 10-L cheese vat using computer vision and colorimetric measurements. Curd syneresis kinetic conditions were varied using 2 levels of milk pH (6.0 and 6.5) and 2 agitation speeds (12.1 and 27.2 rpm). Measured optical parameters were compared with gravimetric measurements of syneresis, taken simultaneously. The results showed that computer vision and colorimeter measurements have potential for monitoring syneresis. The 2 different phases, curd and whey, were distinguished by means of color differences. As syneresis progressed, the backscattered light became increasingly yellow in hue for circa 20 min for the higher stirring speed and circa 30 min for the lower stirring speed. Syneresis-related gravimetric measurements of importance to cheese making (e.g., curd moisture content, total solids in whey, and yield of whey) correlated significantly with computer vision and colorimetric measurements..

The tiger nut tuber of the Cyperus esculentus L. plant is an unusual storage system with similar amounts of starch and lipid. The extraction of its oil employing both mechanical pressing and aqueous enzymatic extraction (AEE) methods was investigated and an examination of the resulting products was carried out. The effects of particle size and moisture content of the tuber on the yield of tiger nut oil with pressing were initially studied. Smaller particles were found to enhance oil yields while a range of moisture content was observed to favour higher oil yields. When samples were first subjected to high pressures up to 700 MPa before pressing at 38 MPa there was no increase in the oil yields. Ground samples incubated with a mixture of α- Amylase, Alcalase, and Viscozyme (a mixture of cell wall degrading enzyme) as a pre-treatment, increased oil yield by pressing and 90% of oil was recovered as a result. When aqueous enzymatic extraction was carried out on ground samples, the use of α- Amylase, Alcalase, and Celluclast independently improved extraction oil yields compared to oil extraction without enzymes by 34.5, 23.4 and 14.7% respectively. A mixture of the three enzymes further augmented the oil yield and different operational factors were individually studied for their effects on the process. These include time, total mixed enzyme concentration, linear agitation speed, and solid-liquid ratio. The largest oil yields were obtained with a solid-liquid ratio of 1:6, mixed enzyme concentration of 1% (w/w) and 6 h incubation time although the longer time allowed for the formation of an emulsion. Using stationary samples during incubation surprisingly gave the highest oil yields, and this was observed to be as a result of gravity separation occurring during agitation. Furthermore, the use of high pressure processing up to 300 MPa as a pre-treatment enhanced oil yields but additional pressure increments had a detrimental effect. The quality of oils recovered from both mechanical and aqueous enzymatic extraction based on the percentage free fatty acid (% FFA) and peroxide values (PV) all reflected the good stabilities of the oils with the highest % FFA of 1.8 and PV of 1.7. The fatty acid profiles of all oils also remained unchanged. The level of tocopherols in oils were enhanced with both enzyme aided pressing (EAP) and high pressure processing before AEE. Analysis on the residual meals revealed DP 3 and DP 4 oligosaccharides present in EAP samples but these would require further assessment on their identity and quality.

A statistical data analysis methodology was developed to evaluate the field emission properties of many samples of copper oxide nanostructured field emitters. This analysis was largely done in terms of Seppen-Katamuki (SK) charts, field strength and emission current. Some physical and mathematical models were derived to describe the effect of small electric field perturbations in the Fowler-Nordheim (F-N) equation, and then to explain the trend of the data represented in the SK charts. The field enhancement factor and the emission area parameters showed to be very sensitive to variations in the electric field for most of the samples. We have found that the anode-cathode distance is critical in the field emission characterization of samples having a non-rigid nanostructure. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The aim of this study was to develop a fast capillary electrophoresis method for the determination of inorganic cations (Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+)) in biodiesel samples, using barium (Ba(2+)) as the internal standard. The running electrolyte was optimized through effective mobility curves in order to select the co-ion and Peakmaster software was used to determine electromigration dispersion and buffer capacity. The optimum background electrolyte was composed of 10 mmol L(-1) imidazole and 40 mmol L(-1) of acetic acid. Separation was conducted in a fused-silica capillary (32 cm total length and 23.5 cm effective length, 50 mu m I.D.), with indirect UV detection at 214 nm. The migration time was only 36 s. In order to obtain the optimized conditions for extraction, a fractional factorial experimental design was used. The variables investigated were biodiesel mass, pH, extractant volume, agitation and sonication time. The optimum conditions were: biodiesel mass of 200 mg, extractant volume of 200 mu L. and agitation of 20 min. The method is characterized by good linearity in the concentration range of 0.5-20 mg kg(-1) (r > 0.999), limit of detection was equal to 0.3 mg kg(-1), inter-day precision was equal to 1.88% and recovery in the range of 88.0-120%. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka vilka icke-farmakologiska omvårdnadsåtgärder som bidrar till reducerad förekomst av beteendestörningar och ökar välbefinnandet hos personer med demens. Studien utfördes som en systematisk litteraturstudie där 15 artiklar inkluderades. Icke-farmakologiska omvårdnadsåtgärder som inkluderades i den här studien var musik, aktivitet och träning och massage och beröring. Beteendestörningar framför allt agitation kan lindras med hjälp av massage och beröring, aktivitet samt musikterapi i olika former. Det är viktigt att utforma alla dessa omvårdnadsåtgärder utifrån individen för att erhålla ett gott resultat. Även välbefinnandet påverkas positivt av dessa icke-farmakologiska omvårdnadsåtgärder. Fördelarna med dessa omvårdnadsåtgärder är att de är enkla att utföra och lära ut, kostnadseffektiva och har få biverkningar. I denna litteraturstudie framgår även att det sociala samspelat har en viktig roll för att personer med demens upplever välbefinnande. Slutsatsen är att det borde vara enkelt att använda sig av dessa effektiva metoder i både demensvård och annan vård.

Syftet med studien var att studera hur sällskapsdjur kan påverka demenssjukas beteendeproblem och vara ett komplement till medicinsk behandling med lugnande läkemedel hos patienter med demens.Studien genomfördes som en systematisklitteraturstudie. Metoden författarna använde sig av var att de valde ut 9 stycken vetenskapliga artiklar från år 1999-2009 som hittats i olika databaser och referenslistor. Artiklarna analyserades genom att texten delades upp i de olika kategorierna lugnade effekt/oro, aggression, kontakt/beröring och läkemedelsanvändande. Resultatet visade att beteendeproblemen som aggression och oro, i flera av studierna blev bättre i sällskapsdjurs närvaro, men bara under den tiden som deltagarna fick animal assisted therapy (AAT). När deltagarna blev utan AAT försämrades deras beteendeproblem igen. Olika slags typer av sällskapsdjur användes vid behandling med AAT. Hunden visades vara det sällskapsdjur som användes mest. Slutsatsen blev att de flesta studierna visade på en positiv effekt på närheten av ett sällskapsdjur inom demensvården. Alla studier kunde inte visa på en signifikant skillnad men vårdpersonals upplevelse var att de demenssjuka hade en tendens till förbättrande av sina beteendeproblem.

Syfte: Litteraturstudiens syfte var att beskriva åtgärder som kan användas för att ge personcentrerad omvårdnad till personer med demenssjukdom samt beskriva hur beteendemässiga och psykiska symtom vid demens (BPSD) påverkas av personcentrerad omvårdnad. Metod: Litteraturstudien innefattade 17 artiklar med såväl kvalitativ som kvantitativ ansats och söktes i databaserna Cinahl och Pubmed. Resultat: Utbildning i personcentrerad omvårdnad gav omvårdnadspersonalen ökad förståelse för personen och insikt i hur stor påverkan deras egen inställning och attityd hade på personer med demens. Genom att skapa livsberättelser kunde omvårdnadspersonalen möta personens behov och ge en identitet till personen. En personlig miljö ansågs betydelsefull för att minska förvirring och oro hos personer med demens, bidrog till personcentrering och stärkte identiteten hos personen. Personcentrerad omvårdnad kunde minska BPSD, till fördel för personen med demens, närstående och omvårdnadspersonal. Personfokusering istället för objektfokusering samt ökat tålamod reducerade motståndet till omvårdnad och agitation. Konklusion: Resultatet visade att det finns åtgärder för att ge en personcentrerad omvårdnad och att en personcentrerad omvårdnad minskar BPSD.

Syfte: Att identifiera vilka aktiviteter som var vanligt förekommande på särskilt boende utifrån litteraturen och vilka effekter de hade på äldres livssituation. Metod: Studien genomfördes som en litteraturöversikt och artiklar söktes genom databaserna Pubmed, CINAHL with Full Text och Academic Search Elite. Studiens resultat innehåller 18 antal artiklar. Resultat: Olika sociala och fysiska aktiviteter hade en positiv inverkan på livskvalitén, men även på de boendes upplevelser av ensamhet. Deras fysiska förmåga förbättrades också i form av att de lättare kunde utföra aktiviteter i dagliga livet (ADL). Fem olika kategorier med aktiviteter skapades. Dessa var trädgårdsprogram, fysisk aktivitet, interaktion med djur, sociala aktiviteter och musik. De olika aktiviteterna hade även en positiv inverkan på äldre med demenssjukdomar i form av minskad agitation och störande beteende. Slutsats: Aktiviteters förekomst på särskilt boende bidrar till en förbättrad livssituation. Äldre bör erbjudas möjlighet att delta i olika sociala och fysiska aktiviteter.

Syfte: Syftet med studien var att belysa olika omvårdnadsåtgärder som bidrar till att minska beteendemässiga och psykiska symtom vid demens (BPSD). Metod: Examensarbetet har utförts som en litteraturstudie med 15 vetenskapliga artiklar varav fem kvantitativa och tio kvalitativa. Datainsamling har genomförts i de vårdvetenskapliga databaserna CINAHL och PubMed. Resultat: De olika omvårdnadsåtgärderna som bidrog till att minska BPSD var att anpassa vårdmiljön genom färgsättning och möjlighet till enkelrum samt egen toalett, även att använda sig av personcentrerad och behovsanpassad vård för att beakta hela människan och dess behov, att stimulera hörsel, lukt och känsel med hjälp av taktil och fotmassage, aromaterapi, akupressur och musik. Samt att använda sig av montessori baserade aktiviteter som innebar att personer fick ägna sig åt intressen som de haft innan sjukdomen uppkom och teoretiskt baserade aktiviteter såsom att läsa tidning och lösa korsord. Dessa omvårdnadsåtgärder bidrog till att minska symtom vid BPSD såsom agitation, aggression samt verbal aggression. Konklusion: Genom att anpassa vårdmiljön med hjälp av design och anpassning, att använda sig av personcentrerad och behovsanpassad vård, att stimulera hörsel, lukt och känsel som taktil och fotmassage, aromaterapi, akupressur och musik. Samt att använda sig av montessori baserade aktiviteter och teoretiskt baserade aktiviteter minskas BPSD samtidigt som möjligheten till en god omvårdnad förbättras och livskvaliteten hos personer med demenssjukdom kan öka.

Syftet var att beskriva vilka icke farmakologiska omvårdnadsåtgärder en sjuksköterska kan användaför att lindra agitation hos äldre personer med demens. Metod Designen som har använts, är enlitteraturöversikt. Artiklar söktes via Cinahl och PubMed, med sökorden dementia, nonpharmacological,nursing och agitation. Sammanställning av sökord, antal träffar, urval,inklusionskriterier och exklusionskriterier återgavs genom text och tabeller. Till resultatsdelenvaldes 11 artiklar ut efter att granskats med granskningsmallar för kvalitetsbedömning. Bådekvantitativa och kvalitativa artiklar valdes ut i resultatet.Resultatet visade att de icke farmakologiska omvårdnadsåtgärderna, har en positiv verkan påpersoner med demens agitation. Litteraturöversiktns slutsats är att speciellt musik och beröringfungerar bra som icke farmakologisk omvårdnadsåtgärd. Den positiva effekten är dock kortvarig.Slutsats Det behövs lite nytänkande kring de icke farmakologiska omvårdnadsåtgärderna.Metoderna är bra. Det som behövs, är att komma på hur man får en långvarig effekt av dessa.

Background. ‘Music Therapeutic Caregiving’, defined as when caregivers’ sing for or together with persons with dementia care situations, has been shown to facilitate the caring situation, and enhance positive and decrease negative expressions in persons with dementia. No studies about singing during mealtimes have been conducted, and this project was designed to elucidate this. However, since previous studies have shown that there is a risk that persons with dementia will start to sing along with the caregiver, the caregiver in this study hummed such that the person with dementia did not sing instead of eat. Aim. To describe professional caregivers’ experiences of humming during meal time while feeding persons with dementia. Method. An intervention with caregivers humming was implemented during lunch time. Focus group interviews were conducted to fetch the caregivers experiences. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the interviews. Results. The caregivers described that humming disseminated relaxation and joy, and awakened memories about the songs hummed which encouraged the persons with the dementia to join in the songs. They also described that humming seemed to make the persons with dementia associate with mealtime and could make them eat more. However it also revealed suspiciousness and agitation from the persons with dementia. Conclusion. Humming during mealtime revealed mainly positive as well as some negative influences. More and larger studies are needed to be able to draw general conclusions.

Neste trabalho estuda-se o processo de flotação por ar dissolvido (FAD) como método de remoção de óleos emulsificados. Realizou-se uma revisão bibliográfica tanto do processo de flotação como dos fundamentos físico-químicos envolvidos na estabilidade e flotação de emulsões. Foram realizados testes de estabilidade de emulsões, de FAD descontínuos e contínuos, utilizando-se emulsões de 1000 mg/l de Óleo diesel e heptano. Verificou-se a eficiência do sulfato de alumínio e de compostos poliméricos como agentes desestabilizantes. Estudou-se a influência do tipo e concentração dos agentes desestabilizantes, pH da emulsão, do tipo de água e agitação nos testes de estabilidade como também na flotação por ar dissolvido. Os resultados obtidos indicaram a viabilidade técnica da aplicação do processo para a clarificação de efluentes oleosos atingindo valores de turbidez residual satisfatórios (menores que 5 UNT). O sulfato de alumínio mostrou-se mais eficiente como agente desestabilizante de ambas emulsões nos estudos de estabilidade e testes de PAD descontínuos, mas o polímero catiônico C-505 apresentou melhores resultados nos testes de flotação contínuos. O presente trabalho ainda apresenta um estudo de dimensionamento e do custo da unidade de FAD para remoção de óleos emulsificados que leva em consideração os custos de investimentos e de operação da unidade. Verifica-se que o custo total da unidade depende da vazão de alimentação, taxa de recirculação, taxa ar/sólido em massa e concentração inicial de óleos. Conclui-se que para as taxas de ar/sólido usados na indústria (geralmente menores que 0,1) o custo operacional do reagente é o parâmetro determinante do custo total atualizado da unidade. Isto faz com que o custo total atualizado seja essencialmente independente da relação taxa de aplicação - taxa ar/sólido.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive diagnostic strategies aimed at identifying biomarkers of cancer are of great interest for early cancer detection. Urine is potentially a rich source of volatile organic metabolites (VOMs) that can be used as potential cancer biomarkers. Our aim was to develop a generally reliable, rapid, sensitive, and robust analytical method for screening large numbers of urine samples, resulting in a broad spectrum of native VOMs, as a tool to evaluate the potential of these metabolites in the early diagnosis of cancer. METHODS: To investigate urinary volatile metabolites as potential cancer biomarkers, urine samples from 33 cancer patients (oncological group: 14 leukaemia, 12 colorectal and 7 lymphoma) and 21 healthy (control group, cancer-free) individuals were qualitatively and quantitatively analysed. Dynamic solid-phase microextraction in headspace mode (dHS-SPME) using a carboxenpolydimethylsiloxane (CAR/PDMS) sorbent in combination with GC-qMS-based metabolomics was applied to isolate and identify the volatile metabolites. This method provides a potential non-invasive method for early cancer diagnosis as a first approach. To fulfil this objective, three important dHS-SPME experimental parameters that influence extraction efficiency (fibre coating, extraction time and temperature of sampling) were optimised using a univariate optimisation design. The highest extraction efficiency was obtained when sampling was performed at 501C for 60min using samples with high ionic strengths (17% sodium chloride, wv 1) and under agitation. RESULTS: A total of 82 volatile metabolites belonging to distinct chemical classes were identified in the control and oncological groups. Benzene derivatives, terpenoids and phenols were the most common classes for the oncological group, whereas ketones and sulphur compounds were the main classes that were isolated from the urine headspace of healthy subjects. The results demonstrate that compound concentrations were dramatically different between cancer patients and healthy volunteers. The positive rates of 16 patients among the 82 identified were found to be statistically different (Po0.05). A significant increase in the peak area of 2-methyl3-phenyl-2-propenal, p-cymene, anisole, 4-methyl-phenol and 1,2-dihydro-1,1,6-trimethyl-naphthalene in cancer patients was observed. On average, statistically significant lower abundances of dimethyl disulphide were found in cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS: Gas chromatographic peak areas were submitted to multivariate analysis (principal component analysis and supervised linear discriminant analysis) to visualise clusters within cases and to detect the volatile metabolites that are able to differentiate cancer patients from healthy individuals. Very good discrimination within cancer groups and between cancer and control groups was achieved.

Hop(HumuluslupulusL.,Cannabaceaefamily)isprizedforitsessentialoilcontents,usedin beer production and, more recently, in biological and pharmacological applications. In this work,a methodinvolvingheadspace solid-phase microextractionand gas chromatography– mass spectrometry was developed and optimized to establish the terpenoid (monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes) metabolomic pattern of hop-essential oil derived from Saaz variety as a mean to explore this matrix as a powerful biological source for newer, more selective, biodegradable and naturally produced antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds. Different parameters affecting terpenoid metabolites extraction by headspace solid-phase microextraction were considered and optimized: type of fiber coatings, extraction temperature, extraction time, ionic strength, and sample agitation. In the optimized method, analytes were extracted for 30 min at 40 C in the sample headspace with a 50/30 m divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane coating fiber. The methodology allowed the identification of a total of 27 terpenoid metabolites, representing 92.5% of the total Saaz hop-essential oil volatile terpenoid composition. The headspace composition was dominated by monoterpenes (56.1%, 13 compounds), sesquiterpenes (34.9%, 10), oxygenated monoterpenes (1.41%, 3), and hemiterpenes (0.04%, 1) some of which can probably contribute to the hop of Saaz variety aroma. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed that the main metabolites are the monoterpene -myrcene (53.0±1.1% of the total volatile fraction), and the cyclic sesquiterpenes, -humulene (16.6 ± 0.8%), and -caryophyllene (14.7 ± 0.4%), which together represent about 80% of the total volatile fraction from the hop-essential oil. Thesefindingssuggestthatthismatrixcanbeexploredasapowerfulbiosourceofterpenoid metabolites.
