A six-fold increase in the rate of accumulation of Al in north and central Atlantic and Pacific Ocean sediments indicates vastly increased denudation of the continents during the past 15 Ma. The increase is more apparent in hemipelagic than pelagic sites, demonstrating widely distributed local controls. Similarities in the rate of increase in the Atlantic and Pacific show that tectonic elevation is not responsible for the difference in sedimentation rate. Also, similarities in the difference at sites of low and high latitude suggest that glaciation is not the most significant source. A lack of correspondence between sedimentation rates and Vail's sea-level curve similarly rule out that effect. The conclusion drawn here is that worldwide climatic deterioration during the late Tertiary is the explanation for the striking increase in detrital sedimentation in the World ocean.

Oxygen isotope records, radiocarbon AMS data, carbonate and opal stratigraphy, sediment magnetic susceptibility, tephrachronology, and paleontological results were used to obtain detailed sediment stratigraphy and an age model for the studied cores. For studying sea-ice sedimentation an analysis of lithogenic grain number in >0.15 mm grain size fraction of bottom sediments was carried out. For quantitative estimation of intensity ice-rafting debris sedimentation number of IRD particles per sq cm per ka was calculated. Obtained results allowed to plot IRD AR distribution for the first oxygen isotope stage (0-12.5 14C ka, 14C) and for the second stage (12.5-24 14C ka). The first stage was subdivided into the latest deglaciation and the beginning of Holocene (6-12.5 14C ka) (transitive period), when the sea level was changing significantly, and the second part of Holocene (0-6 14C ka), when climate conditions and the sea level were similar to modern estimates. Data clearly show strong increase in ice formation in the glacial Sea of Okhotsk and its extent in the middle part of the sea. Average annual duration of ice coverage during glaciation was longer than that for interglaciation. However the sea ice cover was not continuous all the year round and disappeared in summer time except the far northwestern part of the sea.

A critical element for the successful growth of GaN device layers on Si is accurate control of the AlGaN buffer layers used to manage strain. Here we present a method for measuring the composition of the AlGaN buffer layers in device structures which makes use of a one-dimensional x-ray detector to provide efficient measurement of a reciprocal space map which covers the full compositional range from AlN to GaN. Combining this with a suitable x-ray reflection with low strain sensitivity it is possible to accurately determine the Al fraction of the buffer layers independent of their relaxation state. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The dissolution of thin film under-bump-metallization (UBM) by molten solder has been one of the most serious processing problems in electronic packaging technology. Due to a higher melting temperature and a greater Sn content, a molten lead-free solder such as eutectic SnAg has a faster dissolution rate of thin film UBM than the eutectic SnPb. The work presented in this paper focuses on the role of 0.5 wt % Cu in the base Sn–3.5%Ag solder to reduce the dissolution of the Cu bond pad in ball grid array applications. We found that after 0.5 wt % Cu addition, the rate of dissolution of Cu in the molten Sn–3.5%Ag solder slows down dramatically. Systematic experimental work was carried out to understand the dissolution behavior of Cu by the molten Sn–3.5%Ag and Sn–3.5%Ag–0.5%Cu solders at 230–250 °C, for different time periods ranging from 1 to 10 min. From the curves of consumed Cu thickness, it was concluded that 0.5 wt % Cu addition actually reduces the concentration gradient at the Cu metallization/molten solder interface which reduces the driving force of dissolution. During the dissolution, excess Cu was found to precipitate out due to heterogeneous nucleation and growth of Cu6Sn5 at the solder melt/oxide interface. In turn, more Cu can be dissolved again. This process continues with time and leads to more dissolution of Cu from the bond pad than the amount expected from the solubility limit, but it occurs at a slower rate for the molten Sn–3.5%Ag–0.5%Cu solder. © 2003 American Institute of Physics.

We have studied the effects of nitrate supply under photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) plus ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure on photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and carotenoids), photoprotective UV screen mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), and photosynthetic parameters, including the maximum quantum yield (F(v)/F(m)) and electron transport rate (ETR) on the red agarophyte Gracilaria tenuistipitata. Apical tips of G. tenuistipitata were cultivated under ten different concentrations of NO(3)(-) for 7 days. It has been shown that G. tenuistipitata cultured under laboratory conditions has the ability to accumulate high amounts of MAAs following a nitrate concentration-dependent manner under PAR+UVR. Two MAAs were identified, shinorine and porphyra-334. The relative concentration of the first increased under high concentrations of nitrate, while the second one decreased. The presence of antheraxanthin is reported for the first time in this macro-algae, which also contains zeaxanthin, lutein, and beta-carotene. The accumulation of pigments, photoprotective compounds, and photosynthetic parameters of G. tenuistipitata is directly related to N availability. All variables decreased under low N supplies and reached constant maximum values with supplements higher than 0.5 mM NO(3)(-). Our results suggest a high potential to acclimation and photoprotection against stress factors (including high PAR and UVR) directly related to N availability for G. tenuistipitata.

Purpose: Numerous "in vitro" investigations have been conducted to evaluate the role of screw size and pattern in determining optimal resistance to deformation, often these have been controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of screw size and insertion technique on the stability of sagittal split osteotomies.Materials and methods: This study used twenty polyurethane replicas of human hemimandibles with a prefabricated sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO). The hemimandibles were stabilized with 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm titanium screws inserted in an inverted L configuration. All specimens were tested to determine the strength and stability of the fixation. Results: In all cases there was failure of the synthetic bone before there was any evidence of screw failure. There were no significant differences in the load necessary to make the construct fail between the 1.5 or 2.0 mm screw sizes. Conclusion: There was no statistically significant difference between the strengths achieved with screws of 1.5 and 2.0 mm diameters for fixation of SSRO performed in synthetic mandibles. There was no fracture of the 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm diameter screws in any of the tests. 1.5 mm diameter screws in an inverted L pattern have as much stability and mechanical resistance as a 2.0 mm screw, may be safely used for this procedure. INTRODUCTION: Photodynamic therapy with 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA-PDT) exerts cell type specific effects on target cells. Since chondrocytes were found to be more resistant than osteoblasts to 5-ALA-PDT, the pre-treatment of osteochondral grafts with 5-ALA-PDT may represent a means to devitalize the osseous portion while maintaining functional cartilage. The present study was designed to determine the effects of 5-ALA-PDT in vitro on cell populations residing in skeletal tissues. METHODS: Osteoblasts, fibroblasts, bone marrow cells, and dendritic cells were incubated with 0.5 mM 5-ALA for 4 h. Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) accumulation and after exposure to light cellular functions were assessed for up to 6 days. RESULTS: Accumulation of PpIX reached a plateau at 0.5 mM in osteoblasts, fibroblasts, and dendritic cells, and at 2.0 mM in bone marrow cells. At 0.5 mM 5-ALA, similar responses to illumination were observed in all cells with a survival rate of less than 12% at a light dose of 20 J/cm(2). The function of osteoblasts (proliferation, levels of mRNA encoding collagen type I, alkaline phosphatase activity) and fibroblasts (proliferation, levels of mRNAs encoding collagens type I and III) was not affected, when the cells were treated with 5-ALA and light doses of < or =10 J/cm(2). Paralleling the reduction of viable cells after 5-ALA-PDT, the capacity of dendritic cells to stimulate T cells in a mixed leukocyte reaction decreased to 4+/-2% at 20 J/cm(2). CONCLUSION: The investigated cell types were sensitive to 5-ALA-PDT and the residual cell debris did not elicit an allogenic response. These findings, together with the resistance of chondrocytes to 5-ALA-PDT, encourage the further investigation of this protocol in the pretreatment of osteochondral allografts.

We quantified postdepositional losses of methane sulfonate (MSA-), nitrate, and chloride at the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) drilling site in Dronning Maud Land (DML) (75°S, 0°E). Analyses of four intermediate deep firn cores and 13 snow pits were considered. We found that about 26 ± 13% of the once deposited nitrate and typically 51 ± 20% of MSA- were lost, while for chloride, no significant depletion could be observed in firn older than one year. Assuming a first order exponential decay rate, the characteristic e-folding time for MSA- is 6.4 ± 3 years and 19 ± 6 years for nitrate. It turns out that for nitrate and MSA- the typical mean concentrations representative for the last 100 years were reached after 5.4 and 6.5 years, respectively, indicating that beneath a depth of around 1.2-1.4 m postdepositional losses can be neglected. In the area of investigation, only MSA- concentrations and postdepositional losses showed a distinct dependence on snow accumulation rate. Consequently, MSA- concentrations archived at this site should be significantly dependent on the variability of annual snow accumulation, and we recommend a corresponding correction. With a simple approach, we estimated the partial pressure of the free acids MSA, HNO3, and HCl on the basis of Henry's law assuming that ionic impurities of the bulk ice matrix are localized in a quasi-brine layer (QBL). In contrast to measurements, this approach predicts a nearly complete loss of MSA-, NO3 - , and Cl-.

Since the 1970s, Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) and Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP) studies have documented high accumulations of biogenic silica and carbonate in the late Miocene-early Pliocene Indian-Pacific Ocean. This high biogenic productivity event, or the "Biogenic Bloom Event," has been dated from 9.0 to 3.5 Ma (Leinen, 1979, doi:10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90<801:BSAITC>2.0.CO;2; Theyer et al., 1985, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.85.133.1985; Farrell et al., 1995, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.138.143.1995; Dickens and Owen, 1996, doi:10.1016/0377-8398(95)00054-2, 1999, doi:10.1016/S0025-3227(99)00057-2; Dickens and Barron, 1997, doi:10.1016/S0377-8398(97)00003-0; Berger et al., 1993, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.130.051.1993). It is unknown, however, whether the Biogenic Bloom Event existed in the South China Sea (SCS). High-quality Cenozoic sediment cores taken from the SCS during ODP Leg 184 provide an opportunity to investigate this question. The purpose of this study is to trace and illustrate the change in biogenic productivity in the southern SCS since the late Miocene and the Biogenic Bloom Event in terms of the content and accumulation rate of opal and carbonate at Site 1143.
