Additions of 0.5 to 2.0 mol% of CoO or MnO2 onto SnO, promote densification of this oxide up to 99% of theoretical density. The temperature of the maximum shrinkage rate (TM) and the relative density in the maximum densification rate (p*) during constant sintering heating rate depend on the dopant concentration. Thus, dopant concentration controls the densifying and nondensifying mechanisms during sintering. The densification of SnO2 witih addition of CoO or MnO, is explained in terms of the creation of oxygen vacancies.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the presence of meiotic spindle in human oocytes and fertilization rates in ICSI cycles. Methods: Search strategies included online surveys of databases from 1990 to 2008. Nine trials fulfilled the inclusion criteria Results: According to the meta-analysis, the results showed statistically significant higher fertilization rate (p<0.0001) when the meiotic spindle was viewed than when it was not. There was heterogeneity in this comparison. Conclusion: The presence of a birefringent meiotic spindle in human oocytes can predict a higher fertilization rate. This observation has clinical relevance mainly in countries where there is a legal limit on the number of oocytes to be fertilized. Copyright - SBRA - Sociedade Brasileira de Reprodução Assistida.

This quasi-experimental study describes the effects of a yoga sequence following hemodynamic and biochemical parameters in patients with hypertension. Thirty-three volunteers participated in the study (control = 16 and yoga = 17) for four months. Blood pressure measurements, cardiac and respiratory rate were collected monthly, while the biochemical profile was taken at the beginning and end of the program. To analyze the data, Student's t test and repeated measures analyses were performed. The yoga group showed a significant reduction of systolic blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate (p < 0.05). As for the biochemical profile, the yoga group showed correlation coefficients between initial values and final responses greater than the control of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides. The elaborated sequence practice promoted significant cardiovascular and metabolic benefits. The yoga exercises performed in the proposed sequence constitute complementary non-pharmacological control of blood pressure in patients with hypertension. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Objectives: To investigate the effect of fluoride (0, 275 and 1250 ppm F; NaF) in combination with normal and low salivary flow rates on enamel surface loss and fluoride uptake using an erosion-remineralization-abrasion cycling model. Design: Enamel specimens were randomly assigned to 6 experimental groups (n = 8). Specimens were individually placed in custom made devices, creating a sealed chamber on the enamel surface, connected to a peristaltic pump. Citric acid was injected into the chamber for 2 min followed by artificial saliva at 0.5 (normal flow) or 0.05 (low flow) ml/min, for 60 min. This cycle was repeated 4×/day, for 5 days. Toothbrushing with abrasive suspensions containing fluoride was performed for 2 min (15 s of actual brushing) 2×/day. Surface loss was measured by optical profilometry. KOH-soluble fluoride and enamel fluoride uptake were determined after the cycling phase. Data were analysed by two-way ANOVA. Results: No significant interactions between fluoride concentration and salivary flow were observed for any tested variable. Low caused more surface loss than normal flow rate (p < 0.01). At both flow rates, surface loss for 0 was higher than for 275, which did not differ from 1250 ppm F. KOH-soluble and structurally-bound enamel fluoride uptake were significantly different between fluoride concentrations with 1250 > 275 > 0 ppm F (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Sodium fluoride reduced enamel erosion/abrasion, although no additional protection was provided by the higher concentration. Higher erosion progression was observed in low salivary flow rates. Fluoride was not able to compensate for the differences in surface loss between flow rates. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival rate, the intestinal microbiota, the mucosal integrity, and the carcass quality of juvenile Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, after 80 days being fed on a diet containing probiotic additive (Bacillus cereus 4.0×108 CFUg-1 and Bacillus subtilis 4.0×108 CFUg-1), at the ratio of 4g/kg of pelleted feed. The completely randomized design with two treatments was used: one control group and one group fed on the mentioned diet. The evaluation of survival rate, the intestinal microbiota analysis by microbiological culture, histomorphometrical analysis of intestinal mucosa and chemical analysis of carcass was performed. The results showed that tilapias from the treated group had higher relative survival rate (P<0.05) than the control group, higher number of colony-forming units (P<0.05) regarding intestinal colonization by B. cereus and B. subtilis, and higher rates of intestinal mucosal integrity (P<0.05), evaluated by histomorphometry. As for the latter, the group being fed on feed with probiotic additive was observed to have higher and larger villi, besides having a higher number of goblet cells than the control group. Concerning the carcass quality, the results showed that there was positive interference (P<0.05) of the probiotic on the treated group in comparison to the control group as in regard to levels of protein and ether extract. These results allow the inference that the supplementation with probiotic, as tested in this experiment, led to the intestinal colonization by beneficial bacteria and resulted in higher relative survival rate, decreased the mucosal desquamation and helped in the increase of the number of goblet cells.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate gasometric differences of severe trauma patients requiring intubation in prehospital care. METHODS: Patients requiring airway management were submitted to collection of arterial blood samples at the beginning of pre-hospital care and at arrival at the Emergency Room. We analyzed: Glasgow Coma Scale, respiratory rate, arterial pH, arterial partial pressure of CO2 (PaCO2), arterial partial pressure of O2 (PaO2), base excess (BE), hemoglobin O2 saturation (SpO2) and the relation of PaO2 and inspired O2 (PaO2/FiO2). RESULTS: There was statistical significance of the mean differences between the data collected at the site of the accident and at the entrance of the ER as for respiratory rate (p = 0.0181), Glasgow Coma Scale (p = 0.0084), PaO2 (p <0.0001) and SpO2 (p = 0.0018). CONCLUSION: tracheal intubation changes the parameters PaO2 and SpO2. There was no difference in metabolic parameters (pH, bicarbonate and base excess). In the analysis of blood gas parameters between survivors and non-survivors there was statistical difference between PaO2, hemoglobin oxygen saturation and base excess.

Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the influence of methadone on cardiorespiratory parameters, electrocardiogram and clinical sedation in dogs. Further possible side effects are reported.Study designProspective experimental cross-over study.DogsEight, 1-4-year-old, various breeds of dogs of both genders weighing 9-36kg.MethodsEach dog was treated three times: methadone 0.3mgkg(-1) (M0.3), 0.5mgkg(-1) (M0.5) and 1.0mgkg(-1) (M1.0) intramuscularly. Respiratory rate, heart rate and arterial blood pressure were recorded as well as electrocardiographic evaluation of lead II. Clinical sedation in each treatment received a score (0-3) after drug administration and at 30minute intervals until scores and measurements returned to baseline values.ResultsA significant decrease in heart rate was seen with each dose of methadone and bradycardia (HR<60bpm) was noted in a few dogs at each dose. A clinically significant arrhythmia occurred in one dog at 1mgkg(-1) that required reversal with butorphanol. There was no significant difference in SAP, MAP and DAP between treatments. Some side effects such as salivation, defecation, vocalization and panting, after administration of methadone were observed. There were no differences in mean values of heart rate, P-wave and QRS complex duration and QT interval between treatments. Conclusion and clinical relevanceMethadone administration was associated with panting and a decrease in heart rate at all doses tested in this study. The cardiac rhythm should be monitored carefully in dogs when methadone is administered on its own, especially at higher doses.
