Prostacyclin (PgI(2)) and endothelium-derived nitric oxide (EDNO) are produced by the arterial and venous endothelium. In addition to their vasodilator action on vascular smooth muscle, both act together to inhibit platelet aggregation and promote platelet disaggregation. EDNO also inhibits platelet adhesion to the endothelium. EDNO and PgI(2) have been shown to be released from the cultured endocardial cells. In this study, we examined the release of vasoactive substances from the intact endocardium by using isolated rabbit hearts perfused with physiological salt solution (95% O(2)/5% CO(2), T = 37 degrees C). The right and left cardiac chambers were perfused through separate constant-flow perfusion loops (physiological salt solution, 8 ml min(-1)). Effluent from left and right cardiac, separately, was bioassayed on canine coronary artery smooth muscle, which had been contracted with prostaglandin F(2 alpha_)(2 x 10(-6) M) and no change in tension was exhibit. However, addition of calcium ionophore A23187 (10(-6) M) to the cardiac chambers` perfusion line induced vasodilation of the bioassay coronary ring, 61.4 +/- 7.4% versus 70.49 +/- 6.1% of initial prostaglandin F(2 alpha) contraction for the left and right cardiac chambers perfusate, respectively (mean +/- SEM, n = 10, p > 0.05). Production of vasodilator was blocked totally in the left heart but, only partially blocked in the right heart by adding indomethacin (10(-5) M) to the perfusate, respectively, 95.2 +/- 2.2% versus 41.5 +/- 4.8% (mean +/- SEM, n = 10, p < 0.05). 6-Keto prostaglandin F(1 alpha), measured in the endocardial superfusion effluent was also higher for the left cardiac chambers than for the right at the time of stimulation with the A23187, respectively, 25385.88 +/- 5495 pg/ml (n = 8) versus 13,132.45 +/- 1839.82 pg/ml (n = 8), (p < 0.05). These results showed that cyclooxygenase pathway plays major role in generating vasoactive substances for the left cardiac chamber endocardium; while it is not the main pathway for the right ventricular endocardium at which EDNO and PgI(2) Could act together and potentiate their antithrombogenic activities in isolated perfused rabbit heart. This may be an explanation for the intraventricular thrombus mostly seen in left ventricle rather than in right ventricle as a complication of myocardial infarction. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are known to inhibit cell proliferation of many tumour types both in vitro and in vivo. Their capacity to interfere with cell proliferation has been linked to their induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in tumour tissues leading to cell death through apoptosis. However, the exact mechanisms of action of PUFAs are far from clear, particularly in brain tumours. The loss of bound hexokinase from the mitochondrial voltage-dependent anion channel has been directly related to loss of protection from apoptosis, and PUFAs can induce this loss of bound hexokinase in tumour cells. Tumour cells overexpressing Akt activity, including gliomas, are sensitised to ROS damage by the Akt protein and may be good targets for chemotherapeutic agents, which produce ROS, such as PUFAs. Cardiolipin peroxidation may be an initial event in the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria, and enriching cardiolipin with PUFA acyl chains may lead to increased peroxidation and therefore an increase in apoptosis. A better understanding of the metabolism of fatty acids and eicosanoids in primary brain tumours such as gliomas and their influence on energy balance will be fundamental to the possible targeting of mitochondria in tumour treatment.

Insectivorous bats are the main reservoirs of rabies virus (RABV) in various regions of the world. The aims of this study were to (a) establish genealogies for RABV strains from different species of Brazilian insectivorous bats based on the nucleoprotein (N) and glycoprotein (G) genes, (b) investigate specific RABV lineages associated with certain genera of bats and (c) identify molecular markers that can distinguish between these lineages. The genealogic analysis of N and G from 57 RABV strains revealed seven genus-specific clusters related to the insectivorous bats Myotis, Eptesicus, Nyctinomops, Molossus, Tadarida, Histiotus and Lasiurus. Molecular markers in the amino acid sequences were identified which were specific to the seven clusters. These results, which constitute a novel finding for this pathogen, show that there are at least seven independent epidemiological rabies cycles maintained by seven genera of insectivorous bats in Brazil. This study examined the clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical features as well as the differential diagnoses of oral intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) to aid clinicians and pathologists in its diagnosis. Clinical features of five oral IPEH cases were obtained from medical records, and all histopathological diagnoses were reviewed. Immunohistochemical reactions, including anti-CD-34, laminin, vimentin, estrogen receptor alpha, and Ki-67, were assessed. Microscopically, a reactive proliferation of vascular cells composed of small papillary structures with hypocellular and hyalinized cores arising in an organized thrombus was seen. CD-34, vimentin, and laminin staining were strongly positive, while estrogen receptor alpha was negative in all cases. A low percentage of cells were positive for Ki-67 in four of five lesions, but one case was strongly positive. A diagnosis of angiosarcoma was investigated and rejected. IPEH presents specific microscopic characteristics that along with clinical data lead to an accurate diagnosis. The general dentist, the first to participate in the diagnostic process, must share the responsibility for diagnosis with the pathologist, and they must work together to determine the correct diagnosis and management. Oral lesions of IPEH are uncommon. Their main significance is that they show a microscopic resemblance to angiosarcoma. Thus, clinicians should have more information regarding this benign entity. Finally, we suggest that in recurrent cases exhibiting strong immunolabeling of proliferative markers the possibility of angiosarcoma should be investigated.

Examines visitor attitudes and whether visitors are willing to pay to enter Lamington National Park and under what circumstances they would do so. First a sample of visitors is asked a general (normative) question as to whether visitors should pay to visit Lamington National Park and in another question (positive) they are asked whether they would be more willing to pay if the money collected would be invested in the park to improve visitor facilities and for conservation work. The results show that visitors are more willing to accept the ‘user-pays’ principle if the money will be used for the benefit of the national park and its visitors. It was found that foreigners are more in support for a ‘user-pay’ fee than Australians, and among Australians, those visitors from Queensland are the least willing to accept the idea of a user-pay fee to enter the park. The results indicate that if visitors can be shown the benefits (both for visitors and for conservation) of charging an entry fee, then visitors are more likely to support such a concept than when they are unaware of the benefits of a user-fee. The study shows that on average foreigners are willing to pay more than Australians. Finally, the regression results identify significant factors influencing visitors’ attitudes and suggested amounts to visit the national park.

After outlining some comparative features of poverty in India, this article reviews critically recent literature on the dynamics of poverty. On economic efficiency grounds, it rejects the view that the chronically poor are more deserving than the non-chronic poor of poverty assistance. Mechanisms of households and communities for coping with poverty are discussed. The possibility is raised that where poverty has been persistent that rational methods for coping with it are likely to be well established, and less suffering may occur than for households and communities thrown temporarily into poverty. However, situations can also be envisaged where such rational behaviours deepen the poverty trap and create unfavourable externalities for poverty alleviation. Conflict can arise between programmes to alleviate poverty in poor communities and the sustainability of these communities and their local cultures. Problems posed by this are discussed. Furthermore, the impact of market extension on poor landholders is considered. In contrast to the prevailing view that increased market extension and liberalisation is favourable to poor farmers, it is argued that inescapable market transaction cost makes it difficult for the poor to survive as landholders in a fluid and changing market system. The likelihood of poor landholders joining the landless poor rises, and if they migrate from the countryside to the city they face further adjustment hurdles. Consequently, poor landholders may be poorer after the extension of the market system and only their offspring may reap benefits from market reforms.
