Hydrocarbons in water, suspended matter, and bottom sediments of the White Sea

Data are presented on concentration and composition of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HC) in water, suspended matter (collected with a Juday net and by a separator), and in bottom sediments of the White Sea. It was found that during the last years the level of aliphatic HC concentrations in waters of the White Sea (aver. 18 µg/l) practically did not change and was comparable with average concentrations in shelf areas of the World Ocean. In water and bottom sediments distribution of HC is determined by discharge of river marginal filters. Here sedimentation of the bulk of anthropogenic HC occurs. That is why a grain-size controlling factor is not active in the zone of the river depocenter (in particular, of the North Dvina River). The same reasons most probably may explain differences in degree of geochemical relationships between contents of TOC and HC in suspended matter and bottom sediments. After passing through marginal filters natural HC are dominant in all migration forms.

Content and discontent: a qualitative exploration of obstacles to elearning engagement in medical students

BACKGROUND: Elearning is ubiquitous in healthcare professions education. Its equivalence to 'traditional' educational delivery methods is well established. There is a research imperative to clarify when and how to use elearning most effectively to mitigate the potential of it becoming merely a 'disruptive technology.' Research has begun to broadly identify challenges encountered by elearning users. In this study, we explore in depth the perceived obstacles to elearning engagement amongst medical students. Sensitising concepts of achievement emotions and the cognitive demands of multi-tasking highlight why students' deeply emotional responses to elearning may be so important in their learning.

METHODS: This study used focus groups as a data collection tool. A purposeful sample of 31 participated. Iterative data gathering and analysis phases employed a constant comparative approach to generate themes firmly grounded in participant experience.

RESULTS: Key themes that emerged from the data included a sense of injustice, passivity and a feeling of being 'lost at sea'. The actual content of the elearning resource provided important context.

CONCLUSIONS: The identified themes have strong emotional foundations. These responses, interpreted through the lens of achievement emotions, have not previously been described. Appreciation of their importance is of benefit to educators involved in curriculum development or delivery.

Transición en la concepción de la viabilidad de prematuros extremos: análisis sociodiscursivo

El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar cómo en nuestro país se está transitando hacia una nueva concepción de la viabilidad de la prematuridad extrema (recién nacidos con <28 semanas de gestación), caracterizarla y contextualizarla. Para ello, se utilizan datos procedentes de una investigación (P.N. I+D+i, CSO2011-24294) que ha obtenido resultados válidos sobre el desarrollo de 1200 nacidos con ≤1500 g. mediante encuesta poblacional multimétodo, y producido cuatro grupos de discusión y 25 entrevistas abiertas con agentes cualificados. Se recogen aquí los resultados del análisis sociodiscursivo del material cualitativo centrado en esta cuestión y del estudio de diversos documentos sobre viabilidad en la prematuridad extrema. En cuanto a los resultados, en España se viene transitando de manera más práctica que consciente desde una concepción reduccionista de la prematuridad extrema, ligada al normativismo de la bioética y al aislamiento del recién nacido, a una mirada más ensamblada, compleja y heterogénea, acorde con la vigente renovación de la cultura, la práctica y la política biosanitaria en nuestro país.

Prosocial Behaviour in Palliative Nurses: Psychometric Evaluation of the Prosociality Scale

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a prosociality scale within the palliative nursing context, and then examine the impact of prosocial behaviour in relation to job and educational satisfaction among palliative nurses. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted in 25 Italian palliative care centres, with a total of 107 nurses completing the prosociality scale by Caprara et al (2005). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were examined to evaluate a multidimensional model of prosociality. Results: A three-factor solution with a second order factor fitted the data well. The three dimensions extracted were labelled as helping, empathy, and sharing. Participants reported high levels of prosociality. In addition, prosociality was positively associated with job and educational satisfaction. Conclusions: The prosociality scale was valid and reliable when tested with palliative nurses. Although prosociality may be embedded in nurses’ personalities, this quality should be actively promoted to expand and improve the culture and the ethics of nursing.

Sistema de gestão para escola de condução

A utilização de sistema de informação como ferramenta para o apoio à gestão empresarial é fator crucial no mercado competitivo em que as organizações atuam. A busca por segurança e agilidade nos processos de negócio das empresas justifica a grande procura por estes softwares de gestão. O que antigamente estava ao alcance apenas de grandes corporações devido ao elevado custo, agora já faz parte dos planos das empresas de pequeno porte. Este projeto apresenta um protótipo de um sistema de gestão para uma escola de condução integrando a tecnologia e-mail. Para o desenvolvimento do protótipo de sistema web, foi utilizado o PHP e HTML para desenvolver o interface. A base de dados foi desenvolvida em MySQL, e o UML para modelar o sistema, e para a gestão do conteúdo foi utilizado o Framework Yii. Este sistema deve ser capaz de garantir a total segurança dos dados nele cadastrado, ter um atendimento de qualidade aos clientes, considerando-se a sustentabilidade e a competitividade de mercado.
