This paper presents results from a study on the tonal aspects of quantity in Finnish lexically stressed syllables. Fourteen speakers produced a set of 66 utterances where the quantity and structure of the lexically stressed syllable was system- atically varied. The tonal aspects of the syllable nucleus and nucleus and coda in case of closed syllables was stud- ied in the framework of the Target Approximation theory as formulated by Yi Xu. The results show a clear tendency to- wards the quantity distinction and bimoracity in general in Finnish to be signalled tonally by a dynamic falling tone as opposed to a static high tone in short (one mora) nuclei.

This paper presents results from a study on the production of Finnish prosody. The effect of word order and the tonal shape in the production of Finnish prosody was studied as produced by 8 native Finnish speakers. Predictions formulated with regard to results from an earlier study pertaining to the perception of promi- nence were tested. These predictions had to do with the tonal shape of the utterances in the form of a flat hat pattern and the effect of word order on the so called top-line declination within an adver- bial phrase in the utterances. The results from the experiment give support to the following claims: the temporal domain of prosodic focus is the whole utterance, word order reversal from unmarked to marked has an effect on the production of prosody, and the pro- duction of the tonal aspects of focus in Finnish follows a basic flat hat pattern. That is the prominence of a word can be produced by an f 0 rise or a fall, depending on the location of the word in an utterance. The basic accentual shape of a Finnish word is then not a pointed rise/fall hat shape as claimed before since it can vary depending on the syllable structure and the position within an ut- terance.

This paper describes a new flexible delexicalization method based on glottal excited parametric speech synthesis scheme. The system utilizes inverse filtered glottal flow and all-pole modelling of the vocal tract. The method provides a possibil- ity to retain and manipulate all relevant prosodic features of any kind of speech. Most importantly, the features include voice quality, which has not been properly modeled in earlier delex- icalization methods. The functionality of the new method was tested in a prosodic tagging experiment aimed at providing word prominence data for a text-to-speech synthesis system. The ex- periment confirmed the usefulness of the method and further corroborated earlier evidence that linguistic factors influence the perception of prosodic prominence.

The Internet has made possible the cost-effective dissemination of scientific journals in the form of electronic versions, usually in parallel with the printed versions. At the same time the electronic medium also makes possible totally new open access (OA) distribution models, funded by author charges, sponsorship, advertising, voluntary work, etc., where the end product is free in full text to the readers. Although more than 2,000 new OA journals have been founded in the last 15 years, the uptake of open access has been rather slow, with currently around 5% of all peer-reviewed articles published in OA journals. The slow growth can to a large extent be explained by the fact that open access has predominantly emerged via newly founded journals and startup publishers. Established journals and publishers have not had strong enough incentives to change their business models, and the commercial risks in doing so have been high. In this paper we outline and discuss two different scenarios for how scholarly publishers could change their operating model to open access. The first is based on an instantaneous change and the second on a gradual change. We propose a way to manage the gradual change by bundling traditional “big deal” licenses and author charges for opening access to individual articles.

A solid solution of the type Ba5x/2Bi(1-x)5/3Nb5O15 has been identified in the BaO-Bi2O3-Nb2O5 system for the first time. The limits of the solid solution are within the range 0.52 <= x <= 0.80. The compositions x = 0.52, 0.60, 0.72, 0.77, 0.78, and 0.80 were synthesized by the solid-state technique from the starting materials in stoichiometric quantities. The powder X-ray patterns of all the phases in the domain indicate a structural similarity to tetragonal tungsten bronzes (TTBs). The compositions below x = 0.52 and those above x = 0.80 exhibit barium niobate and bismuth niobate impurities, respectively. Single crystals of the composition x = 0.77 were obtained by the melt cooling technique. The crystal structure of Ba3.85/2Bi1.15/3Nb5O15 (x = 0.77) was solved in the tetragonal space group P4bm (No. 100) with a = 12.4938 (14) angstrom, c = 3.9519 (2) A, V = 616.87 (10) angstrom(3), and Z = 2 and was refined to an R index of 0.034. Dielectric measurements on all the phases indicate a typical relaxor behavior with a broad phase transition at T-m approximate to 300 K.

A Schiff base metal complex, [Cu(II)(PLP-DL-tyrosinato)(H2O)].4H2O (PLP = pyridoxal phosphate), with the molecular formula CuC17O13N2H27P has been prepared and characterized by magnetic, spectral, and X-ray structural studies. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1BAR with a = 8.616 (2) angstrom, b = 11.843 (3) angstrom, c = 12.177 (3) angstrom, alpha = 103.40 (2)degrees, beta = 112.32 (2)degrees, gamma = 76.50 (1)degrees, and Z = 2. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by least-squares techniques to a final R value of 0.057 for 3132 independent reflections. The coordination geometry around Cu(II) is distorted square pyramidal with phenolic oxygen, imino nitrogen, and carboxylate oxygen from the Schiff base ligand and water oxygen as basal donor atoms. The axial site is occupied by a phosphate oxygen from a neighboring molecule, thus resulting in a one-dimensional polymer. The structure reveals pi-pi interaction of the aromatic side chain of the amino acid with the pyridoxal pi system. A comparative study is made of this complex with similar Schiff base complexes. The variable-temperature magnetic behavior of this compound shows a weak antiferromagnetic interaction.

The mechano-chemical degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) and poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) using ultrasound (US), ultraviolet (UV) radiation and a photoinitiator (benzoin) has been investigated. The degradation of the polymers was monitored using the reduction in number average molecular weight (M-n) and polydispersity (PDI). A degradation mechanism that included the decomposition of the initiator, generation of polymer radicals by the hydrogen abstraction of initiator radicals, reversible chain transfer between stable polymer and polymer radicals was proposed. The mechanism assumed mid-point chain scission due to US and random scission due to UV radiation. A series of experiments with different initial M-n of the polymers were performed and the results indicated that, irrespective of the initial PDI, the PDI during the sono-photooxidative degradation evolved to a steady state value of 1.6 +/- 0.05 for all the polymers. This steady state evolution of PDI was successfully predicted by the continuous distribution kinetics model. The rate coefficients of polymer scission due to US and UV exhibited a linear increase and decrease with the size of the alkyl group of the poly(alkyl methacrylate)s, respectively. The development of a radioreceptor assay (RRA) that can measure serum LH in a variety of species and CG in sera and urine of pregnant women and monkeys is reported. Using sheep luteal membrane as the receptor source and I-125-labelled hLH/hCG as the tracer, dose-response (displacement) curves were obtained using hLH or hCG as standard. The addition of LH-free serum (200 mul per tube) had no affect on the standard displacement curve. The assay is simple, requires less than 90 min to complete and provides reproducible results. The sensitivity of the assay was 0.6 ng hLH per tube and the intra- and interassay variations were 9.6 and 9.8, respectively. Sera obtained from male and female bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata) and monkey pituitary extract showed parallelism to the standard curve. The concentrations of LH measured correlated with the physiological status of the animals. Sera of rats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea-pigs, sheep and humans showed parallelism to the hLH standard curve indicating the viability of the RRA to measure serum LH of different species. Since the receptors recognize LH and CG, detection of pregnancy in monkeys and women was possible using this assay. The sensitivity of the assay for hCG was 8.7 miu per tube. This RRA could be a convenient alternative to the Leydig cell bioassay for obtaining the LH bioactivity profile of sera and biological fluids.
