Amino acid-lanthanide interactions, Part 2. The X-ray crystal structures of lanthanide and calcium complexes of 1-amino-cyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid (Acc6)

The structures of [Nd-2(Acc(6))(H2O)(6)](ClO4)(6) .(H2O)(6) (1) [Er-2(Acc(6))(4)(H2O)(8)](ClO4)(6) .(H2O)(11) (2) and [Ca-5(Acc(6))(12)(H2O)(6)](ClO4)(10).(H2O)(4) (3) (Acc(6) = 1-aminocyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The lanthanide complexes 1 and 2 are dimeric in which two lanthanide cations are bridged by four carboxylato groups of Acc(6) molecules. In addition, the neodymium complex (1) features the unidentate coordination of the carboxyl group of an Acc(6) molecule in place of a water molecule in the erbium complex (2). The coordination number in both 1 and 2 is eight. The calcium Acc(6) complex (3) is polymeric; three different calcium environments are observed in the asymmetric unit. Defect related luminescence in Hg0.2Cd0.8Te nano- and micro-crystals grown by the solvothermal method

The photoluminescence (PL) properties of nano- and micro-crystalline Hg1-xCdxTe (x approximate to 0.8) grown by the solvothermal method have been studied over the temperature range 10-300 K. The emission spectra of the samples excited with 514.5 nm Ar+ laser consist of five prominent bands around 0.56, 0.60, 0.69, 0.78 and 0.92 eV. The entire PL band in this NIR region is attributed to the luminescence from defect centers. The features like temperature independent peak energy and quite sensitive PL intensity, which has a maximum around 50 K is illustrated by the configuration coordinate model. After 50 K, the luminescence shows a thermal quenching behavior that is usually exhibited by amorphous semiconductors, indicating that the defects are related to the compositional disorder. A Circuit-Based Proof of Toda′s Theorem

We present a simple proof of Toda′s result (Toda (1989), in "Proceedings, 30th Annual IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science," pp. 514-519), which states that circled plus P is hard for the Polynomial Hierarchy under randomized reductions. Our approach is circuit-based in the sense that we start with uniform circuit definitions of the Polynomial Hierarchy and apply the Valiant-Vazirani lemma on these circuits (Valiant and Vazirani (1986), Thoeret. Comput. Sci.47, 85-93).

Misalignment as a Therapeutic Resource

The article reports conversation analysis of a single cognitive psychotherapy session in which an interactional misalignment between the therapist and the patient emerges, culminates, and is mitigated. Through this case study, the interactional practices lead- ing to a rupture in therapeutic alliance and the practices leading to its mending are explored. In the session the therapist pursues investigative orientation in relation to the patient’s experience under discussion, whereas the patient maintains orientation to “troubles-telling.” The diverging projects of the participants amount to overt misalign- ment. Eventually, the therapist brings the relationship of the patient and herself as a topic of conversation in ways which turn the misalignment into a resource of therapeu- tic work. The microanalysis of actual interactional patterns in this single case is linked to discussions of therapeutic alliance in psychotherapeutic literature.

Professional non-neutrality: criticising the third party in psychotherapy

Using audio-recorded data from cognitive-constructivist psychotherapy, the article shows a particular institutional context in which successful professional action does not adhere to the pattern of affective neutrality which Parsons saw as an inherent component of medicine and psychotherapy. In our data, the professional’s non-neutrality functions as a tool for achieving institutional goals. The analysis focuses on the psychotherapist’s actions that convey a critical stance towards a third party with whom the patient has experienced problems. The data analysis revealed two practices of this kind of critique: (1) the therapist can confirm the critique that the patient has expressed or (2) return to the critique from which the patient has focused away. These actions are shown to build grounds for the therapist’s further actions that challenge the patient’s dysfunctional beliefs. The article suggests that in the case of psychotherapy, actions that as such might be seen as apparent lapses from the neutral professional role can in their specific context perform the task of the institution at hand.

Two beam photoluminescence of PbS quantum dots in polyvinyl alcohol

We report the effect of dual beam excitation on the photoluminescence (PL) from PbS quantum dots in polyvinyl alcohol by using two excitation lasers, namely Ar+ (514.5 nm) and He-Ne laser (670 nm). Both sources of excitation gave similar PL spectra around 1.67 eV (related to shallow traps) and 1.1 eV (related to deep traps). When both lasers were used at the same time, we found that the PL induced by each of the lasers was partly quenched by the illumination of the other laser. The proposed mechanism of this quenching effect involves traps that are populated by one specific laser excitation, being photo-ionized by the presence of the other laser. Temperature, laser intensity and modulation frequency dependent quenching efficiencies are presented in this paper.
