Use of climate information for farm-level decision making: rainfed groundnut in southern India

The production of rainfed crops in semi-arid tropics exhibits large variation in response to the variation in seasonal rainfall. There are several farm-level decisions such as the choice of cropping pattern, whether to invest in fertilizers, pesticides etc., the choice of the period for planting, plant population density etc. for which the appropriate choice (associated with maximum production or minimum risk) depends upon the nature of the rainfall variability or the prediction for a specific year. In this paper, we have addressed the problem of identifying the appropriate strategies for cultivation of rainfed groundnut in the Anantapur region in a semi-arid part of the Indian peninsula. The approach developed involves participatory research with active collaboration with farmers, so that the problems with perceived need are addressed with the modern tools and data sets available. Given the large spatial variation of climate and soil, the appropriate strategies are necessarily location specific. With the approach adopted, it is possible to tap the detailed location specific knowledge of the complex rainfed ecosystem and gain an insight into the variety of options of land use and management practices available to each category of stakeholders. We believe such a participatory approach is essential for identifying strategies that have a favourable cost-benefit ratio over the region considered and hence are associated with a high chance of acceptance by the stakeholders. Thermodynamic properties of SmFeO3(S) and SM3R5O12(S)

The enthalpy increments and the standard molar Gibbs energy (G) of formation of SmFeO3(S) and SM3Fe5O12(s) have been measured using a Calvet micro-calorimeter and a solid oxide galvanic cell, respectively. A X-type transition, related to magnetic order-disorder transformation (antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic), is apparent from the heat capacity data at similar to673 K for SmFeO3(s) and at similar to560 K for Sm3Fe5O12(S). Enthalpy increment data for SmFeO3(s) and SM3Fe5O12(s), except in the vicinity of X-transition, can be represented by the following polynomial expressions: {H-m(0)(T) - H-m(0)(298.15 K){/J mol-(1)(+/-1.2%) = -54 532.8 + 147.4 . (T/K) + 1.2 . 10(-4) . (T/K)(2) +3.154 . 10(6) . (T/K)(2) + 8.161 . 10(6) - (T/K)(-1); (298.15 less than or equal to T/K less than or equal to 1000) for Sm3Fe5O12(s). The reversible emf of the solid-state electrochemical cells, (-)Pt/{SmFeO3(s) + Sm2O3(S) + Fe(s)) // YDT / CSZ // {Fe(s) + Fe0.95O(s)} / Pt(+) and (-)Pt/{Fe(s) + Fe0.95O(S)} // CSZ // {SmFeO3(s) + Sm3Fe5O12(s) + Fe3O4(s) / Pt(+), were measured in the temperature ranges of 1005-1259 K and 1030-1252 K, respectively. The standard molar G of formation of solid SmFeO3 and Sm3Fe5O12 calculated by the least squares regression analysis of the data obtained in the current study, and data for Fe0.95O and Sm2O3 from the literature, are given by: Delta(f)G(m)(0)(SmFeO3, s)/kj . mol(-1)(+/-2.0) = -1355.2 + 0.2643 . ; (1005 less than or equal to T/K less than or equal to 1570) and Delta(f)G(m)(0)(Sm3Fe5O12, s)/kj . mol(-1) (+/- 3.1) = -4891.0 + 1.0312 . (T/K); (1030 less than or equal to T/K less than or equal to 1252) The uncertainty estimates for Delta(f)G(m)(0) include the standard deviation in the emf and uncertainty in the data taken from the literature. Based on these thermodynamic data, the oxygen potential diagram for the system Sm-Fe-O was constructed at 1250 K.

Characterization of structural and free energy properties of promoters associated with Primary and Operon TSS in Helicobacter pylori genome and their orthologs

Promoter regions in the genomes of all domains of life show similar trends in several structural properties such as stability, bendability, curvature, etc. In current study we analysed the stability and bendability of various classes of promoter regions (based on the recent identification of different classes of transcription start sites) of Helicobacter pylori 26695 strain. It is found that primary TSS and operon-associated TSS promoters show significantly strong features in their promoter regions. DNA free-energy-based promoter prediction tool PromPredict was used to annotate promoters of different classes, and very high recall values (similar to 80%) are obtained for primary TSS. Orthologous genes from other strains of H. pylori show conservation of structural properties in promoter regions as well as coding regions. PromPredict annotates promoters of orthologous genes with very high recall and precision.

Why are some galaxy discs extremely thin?

Some low-surface-brightness galaxies are known to have extremely thin stellar discs with the vertical-to-planar axes ratio 0.1 or less, often referred to as superthin galaxies. Although their existence is now known for over three decades, the physical origin of the superthin discs is still not understood. We model the vertical thickness of the stellar disc using our model of a two-component (gravitationally coupled stars and gas) disc embedded in a dark matter halo, for a bulgeless, superthin galaxy UGC 7321 which has a dense, compact halo, and is compare with a typical dwarf irregular galaxy Holmberg II which has a low-density, non-compact halo. We show that while the presence of gas does constrain the stellar disc thickness and hence its axial ratio, it is the compact dark matter halo which plays the decisive role in determining the mean distribution of stars in the vertical direction in low-luminosity bulgeless galaxies like UGC 7321, and causes the stellar disc to be superthin. Thus, the compactness of the dark matter halo significantly affects the disc structure and this could be important for the early evolution of galaxies.

Stability of a long unsupported circular tunnel in soils with seismic forces

By using the lower-bound finite element limit analysis, the stability of a long unsupported circular tunnel has been examined with an inclusion of seismic body forces. The numerical results have been presented in terms of a non-dimensional stability number (gamma H/c) which is plotted as a function of horizontal seismic earth pressure coefficient (k (h)) for different combinations of H/D and I center dot; where (1) H is the depth of the crest of the tunnel from ground surface, (2) D is the diameter of the tunnel, (3) k (h) is the earthquake acceleration coefficient and (4) gamma, c and I center dot define unit weight, cohesion and internal friction angle of soil mass, respectively. The stability numbers have been found to decrease continuously with an increase in k (h). With an inclusion of k (h), the plastic zone around the periphery of the tunnel becomes asymmetric. As compared to the results reported in the literature, the present analysis provides a little lower estimate of the stability numbers. The numerical results obtained would be useful for examining the stability of unsupported tunnel under seismic forces.

Traffic engineered NoC for streaming applications

Streaming applications demand hard bandwidth and throughput guarantees in a multiprocessor environment amidst resource competing processes. We present a Label Switching based Network-on-Chip (LS-NoC) motivated by throughput guarantees offered by bandwidth reservation. Label switching is a packet relaying technique in which individual packets carry route information in the form of labels. A centralized LS-NoC Management framework engineers traffic into Quality of Service (QoS) guaranteed routes. LS-NoC caters to the requirements of streaming applications where communication channels are fixed over the lifetime of the application. The proposed NoC framework inherently supports heterogeneous and ad hoc system-on-chips. The LS-NoC can be used in conjunction with conventional best effort NoC as a QoS guaranteed communication network or as a replacement to the conventional NoC. A multicast, broadcast capable label switched router for the LS-NoC has been designed. A 5 port, 256 bit data bus, 4 bit label router occupies 0.431 mm(2) in 130 nm and delivers peak bandwidth of 80 Gbits/s per link at 312.5 MHz. Bandwidth and latency guarantees of LS-NoC have been demonstrated on traffic from example streaming applications and on constant and variable bit rate traffic patterns. LS-NoC was found to have a competitive AreaxPower/Throughput figure of merit with state-of-the-art NoCs providing QoS. Circuit switching with link sharing abilities and support for asynchronous operation make LS-NoC a desirable choice for QoS servicing in chip multiprocessors. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. An insight into real-time performance assessment of a building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) installation in Bangalore (India)

Building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) applications are gaining widespread popularity. The performance of any given BIPV system is dependent on prevalent meteorological factors, site conditions and system characteristics. Investigations pertaining to the performance assessment of photovoltaic (PV) systems are generally confined to either controlled environment-chambers or computer-based simulation studies. Such investigations fall short of providing a realistic insight into how a PV system actually performs real-time. Solar radiation and the PV cell temperature are amongst the most crucial parameters affecting PV output. The current paper deals with the real-time performance assessment of a recently commissioned 5.25 kW, BIPV system installed at the Center for Sustainable Technologies, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The overall average system efficiency was found to be 6% for the period May 2011-April 2012. This paper provides a critical appraisal of PV system performance based on ground realities, particularly characteristic to tropical (moderate) regions such as Bangalore, India. On strong centerpoints

Let P be a set of n points in R-d and F be a family of geometric objects. We call a point x is an element of P a strong centerpoint of P w.r.t..F if x is contained in all F is an element of F that contains more than cn points of P, where c is a fixed constant. A strong centerpoint does not exist even when F is the family of halfspaces in the plane. We prove the existence of strong centerpoints with exact constants for convex polytopes defined by a fixed set of orientations. Folivory as a Constraint on Social Behaviour of Langurs in South India

Folivory, being a dietary constraint, can affect the social time of colobines. In the present study, we compared food items and activity budgets of two closely related species of colobines inhabiting South India, i.e. the Hanuman langur (Semnopithecus hypoleucos) and Nilgiri langur (Semnopithecus johnii), to determine whether folivory had an impact on social time in these species. Our study established that Nilgiri langurs were more folivorous than Hanuman langurs. Nilgiri langurs spent much less time on social activities, but more time on resting, although the social organization of S. hypoleucos was similar to that of the Nilgiri langur. The enforced resting time for fermentation of leafy food items may have reduced the time available for social interactions, which in turn affected the social time in Nilgiri langurs. By comparing the data from previous studies on other Hanuman langur species, we found that S. hypoleucos spent a similar amount of time on social activities as Semnopithecus entellus. Hence, the social behaviour of S. entellus and S. hypoleucos is phylogenetically highly conservative. (C) 2015 S. Karger AG, Basel

La configuración del espacio en la historiografía castellana bajomedieval : una microlectura

Resumen: El trabajo se centra en el análisis de la representación del espacio en tres episodios incluidos en sendas crónicas de mediados del siglo XIV: la “Leyenda de los jueces de Castilla” (tal y como se conserva en el Ms. 431 de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid), la “Leyenda del pecho de los fijosdalgo” (según la Primera Crónica General) y el levantamiento de la nobleza en Lerma en 1272 (en la Crónica de Alfonso X). En cada uno de estos episodios la glera de Burgos se constituye en un escenario privilegiado en la confrontación de la nobleza con el rey y contribuye a la configuración de la subjetividad de estos actores sociales en virtud de un particular entrelazamiento de temas históricos y legendarios. El espacio adquiere, así, una nueva significación que lo liga social y políticamente a este estamento convirtiéndose en un emblema con una fuerte carga simbólica.
