Research on carbon uptake in boreal forests has mainly focused on mature trees, even though ground vegetation species are effective assimilators and can substantially contribute to the CO2 uptake of forests. Here, I examine the photosynthesis of the most common species of ground vegetation in a series of differently aged Scots pine stands, and at two clear-cut sites with substantial differences in fertility. In general, the biomass of evergreen species was highest at poor sites and below canopies, whereas grasses and herbs predominated at fertile sites and open areas. Unlike mosses, the measured vascular species showed clear annual cycles in their photosynthetic activity, which increased earlier and decreased later in evergreen vascular species than in deciduous species. However, intraspecific variation and self-shading create differences in the overall level of photosynthesis. Light, temperature history, soil moisture and recent possible frosts could explain the changes in photosynthesis of low shrubs and partially also some changes in deciduous species. Light and the occurrence of rain events explained most of the variation in the photosynthesis of mosses. The photosynthetic production of ground vegetation was first upscaled, using species-specific and mass-based photosynthetic activities and average biomass of the site, and then integrated over the growing season, using changes in environmental factors. Leaf mass-based photosynthesis was highest in deciduous species, resulting in notably higher photosynthetic production at fertile sites than at poor clear-cut sites. The photosynthetic production decreased with stand age, because flora changed towards evergreen species, and light levels diminished below the canopy. In addition, the leaf mass-based photosynthetic activity of some low shrubs declined with the age of the surrounding trees. Different measuring methods led to different momentary rate of photosynthesis. Therefore, the choice of measuring method needs special attention.

Reinforced concrete corbels have been analysed using the nonlinear finite element method. An elasto-plastic-cracking constitutive formulation using Huber-Hencky-Mises yield surface augmented with a tension cut-off is employed. Smeared-fixed cracking with mesh-dependent strain softening is employed to obtain objective results. Multiple non-orthogonal cracking and opening and closing of cracks are permitted. The model and the formulation are verified with respect to available numerical solution for an RC corbel. Results of analyses of nine reinforced concrete corbels are presented and compared with experimental results. Nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete structures is shown to be a complement and also a feasible alternative to laboratory testing.

An attempt has been made to forecast the potential of thermophilic fungi to grow in soil in the laboratory and in the field in the presence of a predominantly mesophilic fungal flora at usual temperature. The respiratory rate of thermophilic fungi was markedly responsive to changes in temperature, but that of mesophilic fungi was relatively independent of such changes. This suggested that in a thermally fluctuating environment, thermophilic fungi may be at a physiological disadvantage compared to mesophilic fungi. In mixed cultures in soil plates, thermophilic fungi outgrew mesophilic fungi under a fluctuating temperature regime only when the amplitude of the fluctuating temperatures was small and approached their temperature optima for growth. An antibody probe was used to detect the activity of native or an introduced strain of a thermophilic fungus, Thermomyces lanuginosus, under field conditions. The results suggest that although widespread, thermophilic fungi are ordinarily not an active component of soil microflora. Their presence in soil most likely may be the result of the aerial dissemination of propagules from composting plant material.

A state-of-the-art model of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system, the climate forecast system (CFS), from the National Centres for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), USA, has been ported onto the PARAM Padma parallel computing system at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Bangalore and retrospective predictions for the summer monsoon (June-September) season of 2009 have been generated, using five initial conditions for the atmosphere and one initial condition for the ocean for May 2009. Whereas a large deficit in the Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR; June-September) was experienced over the Indian region (with the all-India rainfall deficit by 22% of the average), the ensemble average prediction was for above-average rainfall during the summer monsoon. The retrospective predictions of ISMR with CFS from NCEP for 1981-2008 have been analysed. The retrospective predictions from NCEP for the summer monsoon of 1994 and that from CDAC for 2009 have been compared with the simulations for each of the seasons with the stand-alone atmospheric component of the model, the global forecast system (GFS), and observations. It has been shown that the simulation with GFS for 2009 showed deficit rainfall as observed. The large error in the prediction for the monsoon of 2009 can be attributed to a positive Indian Ocean Dipole event seen in the prediction from July onwards, which was not present in the observations. This suggests that the error could be reduced with improvement of the ocean model over the equatorial Indian Ocean.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) and indium doped ZnO (IZO) thin films with different indium compositions were grown by pulsed laser deposition technique on corning glass substrate. The effect of indium concentration on the structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties of the film was studied. The films were oriented along c-direction with wurtzite structure and highly transparent with an average transmittance of more than 80% in the visible wavelength region. The energy band gap was found to decrease with increasing indium concentration. High transparency makes the films useful as optical windows while the high band gap values support the idea that the film could be a good candidate for optoelectronic devices. The value of resistivity observed to decrease initially with doping concentration and subsequently increases. IZO with 1% of indium showed the lowest resistivity of 2.41 x 10(-2) Omega cm and large transmittance in the visible wavelength region. Especially 1% IZO thin film was observed to be a suitable transparent conducting oxide material to potentially replace indium tin oxide. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Res subunits of the type III restriction-modification enzymes share a statistically significant amino acid sequence similarity with several RNA and DNA helicases of the so-called DEAD family. It was postulated that in type III restriction enzymes a DNA helicase activity may be required for local unwinding at the cleavage site. The members of this family share seven conserved motifs, all of which are found in the Res subunit of the type III restriction enzymes. To determine the contribution, if any, of these motifs in DNA cleavage by EcoPI, a type III restriction enzyme, we have made changes in motifs I and II. While mutations in motif I (GTGKT) clearly affected ATP hydrolysis and resulted in loss of DNA cleavage activity, mutation in motif II (DEPH) significantly decreased ATP hydrolysis but had no effect on DNA cleavage. The double mutant R.EcoPIK90R-H229K showed no significant ATPase or DNA restriction activity though ATP binding was not affected. These results imply that there are at least two ATPase reaction centres in EcoPI restriction enzyme. Motif I appears to be involved in coupling DNA restriction to ATP hydrolysis. Our results indicate that EcoPI restriction enzyme does not have a strand separation activity. We suggest that these motifs play a role in the ATP-dependent translocation that has been proposed to occur in the type III restriction enzymes. (C) 1997 Academic Press Limited.

The role of B2O3 addition on the long phosphorescence of SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ has been investigated. B2O3 is just not an inert high temperature solvent (flux) to accelerate grain growth, according to SEM results. B2O3 has a substitutional effect, even at low concentrations. by way of incorporation of BO4 in the corner-shared AlO4 framework of the distorted 'stuffed' tridymite structure of SrAl2O4. which is discernible from the IR and solid-state MAS NMR spectral data. With increasing concentrations, B2O3 reacts with SrAl2O4 to form Sr4Al4O25 together with Sr-borate (SrB2O4) as the glassy phase, as evidenced by XRD and SEM studies. At high B2O3 contents, Sr4Al14O25 converts to SrAl2B2O7 (cubic and hexagonal), SrAl12O19 and Sr-borate (SrB4O7) glass. Sr4Al14O25:Eu2+, Dy3+ has also been independently synthesized to realize the blue emitting (lambda(em)approximate to490 nm) phosphor. The afterglow decay as well as thermoluminescence studies reveal that Sr4Al14O25:Eu, Dy exhibits equally long phosphorescence as that of SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+. In both cases, long phosphorescence is noticed only when BO4 is present along with Dy3+ and Eu2+. Here Dy3+ because of its higher charge density than Eu2+ prefers to occupy the Sr sites in the neighbourhood of BO4, as the effective charge on borate is more negative than that of AlO4. Thus. Dy3+ forms a substitutional defect complex with borate and acts as an acceptor-type defect center. These defects Eu2+ ions and the subsequent thermal release of hole at room temperature followed by the trap the hole generated by the excitation of recombination with electron resulting in the long persistent phosphorescence. The activity of Ti02 in single and two··phase regions of ihe system ZrOrTi02 has heen measured lIsing solid state cells based on yttria··doped tho ria (YDT) as the solid electrolyte at 1373 K. The cells used can be represented as: Pt, Tio.07PtO.Y3 + Zrj.,Tix0 2 / YDT / Ti02 + Tio.07Pto.93, Pt Pt, Tio.07Pto.93 + ZrJ.xTix02 + ZrTi04 / YDT / Ti02+ Tio.07PtO.93, Pt In each cell the composition of Pt-Ti alloy was identical at hoth electrodes. The emf of the cell is therefore directly related to the activity of Ti02 in oxide phase or oxide phase mixture: aTiO~ :;: cxp (-4FE/RT). The activity coefficient of Ti02 in th~ zirconia-rich solid solution with monoclinic structure (CUl2 2" XTi02 2" 0) can be expressed as:In the zirconia-rich solid solution with tetragonal structure (0.085 2" X ri02 2" 0.03), the activity coefficient is given by:In YTi02 (± 0.012) = 2.354 (1-XTiO? )2 +0.064 The standard Gibbs energy of formation of ZrTi04 is -5650 (± 200) J/mol at 1373 K .

Pathogen encoded peptidases are known to be important during infection; however, their roles in modulating host responses in immunocompromised individuals are not well studied. The roles of S. typhimurium (WT) encoded Peptidase N (PepN), a major aminopeptidase and sole M1 family member, was studied in mice lacking Interferon-γ (IFNγ), a cytokine important for immunity. S. typhimurium lacking pepN (ΔpepN) displays enhanced colony forming units (CFU) compared to WT in peripheral organs during systemic infection in C57BL/6 mice. However, Ifnγ(-/-) mice show higher CFU compared to C57BL/6 mice, resulting in lower fold differences between WT and ΔpepN. Concomitantly, reintroduction of pepN in ΔpepN (ΔpepN/pepN) reduces CFU, demonstrating pepN-dependence. Interestingly, expression of a catalytically inactive PepN (ΔpepN/E298A) also lowers CFU, demonstrating that the decrease in CFU is independent of the catalytic activity of PepN. In addition, three distinct differences are observed between infection of C57BL/6 and Ifnγ(-/-) mice: First, serum amounts of TNFα and IL1β post infection are significantly lower in Ifnγ(-/-) mice. Second, histological analysis of C57BL/6 mice reveals that damage in spleen and liver upon infection with WT or ΔpepN is greater compared to ΔpepN/pepN or ΔpepN/E298A. On the other hand, Ifnγ(-/-) mice are highly susceptible to organ damage by all strains of S. typhimurium used in this study. Finally, greater survival of C57BL/6, but not Ifnγ(-/-) mice, is observed upon infection with ΔpepN/pepN or ΔpepN/E298A. Overall, the roles of the host encoded IFNγ during infection with S. typhimurium strains with varying degrees of virulence are highlighted.

In species-rich assemblages, differential utilization of vertical space can be driven by resource availability. For animals that communicate acoustically over long distances under habitat-induced constraints, access to an effective transmission channel is a valuable resource. The acoustic adaptation hypothesis suggests that habitat acoustics imposes a selective pressure that drives the evolution of both signal structure and choice of calling sites by signalers. This predicts that species-specific signals transmit best in native habitats. In this study, we have tested the hypothesis that vertical stratification of calling heights of acoustically communicating species is driven by acoustic adaptation. This was tested in an assemblage of 12 coexisting species of crickets and katydids in a tropical wet evergreen forest. We carried out transmission experiments using natural calls at different heights from the forest floor to the canopy. We measured signal degradation using 3 different measures: total attenuation, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and envelope distortion. Different sets of species supported the hypothesis depending on which attribute of signal degradation was examined. The hypothesis was upheld by 5 species for attenuation and by 3 species each for SNR and envelope distortion. Only 1 species of 12 provided support for the hypothesis by all 3 measures of signal degradation. The results thus provided no overall support for acoustic adaptation as a driver of vertical stratification of coexisting cricket and katydid species.

A chemoselective reduction of olefins and acetylenes is demonstrated by employing catalytic amounts of ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O) and aqueous hydrazine (NH2NH2 center dot H2O) as hydrogen source at room temperature. The reduction is chemoselective and tolerates a variety of reducible functional groups. Unlike other metal-catalysed reduction methods, the present method employs a minimum amount of aqueous hydrazine (1.5-2 equiv.). Also, the scope of this method is demonstrated in the synthesis of ibuprofen in aqueous medium.

We present an extensive study on the structural, electrical and optical properties of InN thin films grown on c-Al2O3, GaN(130 nm)/Al2O3, GaN(200 nm)/Al2O3 and GaN(4 mu m)/Al2O3 by using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The high resolution X-ray diffraction study reveals better crystalline quality for the film grown on GaN(4 mu m)/Al2O3 as compared to others. The electronic and optical properties seem to be greatly influenced by the structural quality of the films, as can be evidenced from Hall measurement and optical absorption spectroscopy. Kane's k.p model was used to describe the dependence of optical absorption edge of InN films on carrier concentration by considering the non-parabolic dispersion relation for carrier in the conduction band. Room temperature Raman spectra for the InN films grown on GaN show the signature of residual tensile stress in contrast to the compressive stress observed for the films grown directly on c-Al2O3. This study reports the in vitro compatibility of muscle cells (C2C12 mouse myoblast cell line) with the transparent poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels and the results are explained on the basis of surface wettability, crystallinity, and nanoscale elastic stiffness property. Nanoindentation was carried out with a maximum load of 100 mu N for all the hydrogel compositions and the properties such as elastic stiffness, hardness and total work done during indentation were computed. The difference in cell viability as well as adhesion of cultured myoblast cells on the investigated hydrogel substrates were discussed in reference to the difference in the nanoscale elastic properties, crystallinity, and surface wettability. An important result has been that both elastic stiffness and surface wettability synergistically influence myoblast viability/adhesion on PVA hydrogels. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
