The partitioning of minor trivalent actinides (An) from lanthanides (Ln) is one of the challenges in the chemical treatment of nuclear waste. The optimal ligand to carry out the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) using solvent extraction has to meet several important criteria: high selectivity towards the solute, chemical and radiolytic stability, stripping possibilities and recycling of the organic phase, high separation factors and good distribution ratio, to name just a few of them. A chronological line can be drawn along the development of each extraction ligand family and some milestones are emphasized in this overview. Further developments in organic synthesis of extracting ligands are expected.

CO, O3, and H2O data in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS) measured by the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer(ACE-FTS) on Canada’s SCISAT-1 satellite are validated using aircraft and ozonesonde measurements. In the UTLS, validation of chemical trace gas measurements is a challenging task due to small-scale variability in the tracer fields, strong gradients of the tracers across the tropopause, and scarcity of measurements suitable for validation purposes. Validation based on coincidences therefore suffers from geophysical noise. Two alternative methods for the validation of satellite data are introduced, which avoid the usual need for coincident measurements: tracer-tracer correlations, and vertical tracer profiles relative to tropopause height. Both are increasingly being used for model validation as they strongly suppress geophysical variability and thereby provide an “instantaneous climatology”. This allows comparison of measurements between non-coincident data sets which yields information about the precision and a statistically meaningful error-assessment of the ACE-FTS satellite data in the UTLS. By defining a trade-off factor, we show that the measurement errors can be reduced by including more measurements obtained over a wider longitude range into the comparison, despite the increased geophysical variability. Applying the methods then yields the following upper bounds to the relative differences in the mean found between the ACE-FTS and SPURT aircraft measurements in the upper troposphere (UT) and lower stratosphere (LS), respectively: for CO ±9% and ±12%, for H2O ±30% and ±18%, and for O3 ±25% and ±19%. The relative differences for O3 can be narrowed down by using a larger dataset obtained from ozonesondes, yielding a high bias in the ACEFTS measurements of 18% in the UT and relative differences of ±8% for measurements in the LS. When taking into account the smearing effect of the vertically limited spacing between measurements of the ACE-FTS instrument, the relative differences decrease by 5–15% around the tropopause, suggesting a vertical resolution of the ACE-FTS in the UTLS of around 1 km. The ACE-FTS hence offers unprecedented precision and vertical resolution for a satellite instrument, which will allow a new global perspective on UTLS tracer distributions.

Aims Potatoes have an inadequate rooting system for efficient acquisition of water and minerals and use disproportionate amounts of irrigation and fertilizer. This research determines whether significant variation in rooting characteristics of potato exists, which characters correlate with final yield and whether a simple screen for rooting traits could be developed. Methods Twenty-eight genotypes of Solanum tuberosum groups Tuberosum and Phureja were grown in the field; eight replicate blocks to final harvest, while entire root systems were excavated from four blocks. Root classes were categorised and measured. The same measurements were made on these genotypes in the glasshouse, 2 weeks post emergence. Results In the field, total root length varied from 40 m to 112 m per plant. Final yield was correlated negatively with basal root specific root length and weakly but positively with total root weight. Solanum tuberosum group Phureja genotypes had more numerous roots and proportionally more basal than stolon roots compared with Solanum tuberosum, group Tuberosum genotypes. There were significant correlations between glasshouse and field measurements. Conclusions Our data demonstrate that variability in rooting traits amongst commercially available potato genotypes exists and a robust glasshouse screen has been developed. By measuring potato roots as described in this study, it is now possible to assess rooting traits of large populations of potato genotypes.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a utilidade da oftalmoscopia direta realizada por não-oftalmologistas em 400 pacientes hipertensos não diabéticos. Em um estudo transversal, analisou-se a associação entre exame fundoscópico, categorizado em normal e anormal e de acordo com uma classificação de Keith, Wagener e Barker (KW) modificada, com pressão arterial, duração da hipertensão e anormalidades eletrocardiográficas. Associações entre pressão arterial e anormalidades eletrocardiográficas também foram realizadas. As anormalidades de fundo-de-olho foram mais freqüentes em pacientes com pressão arterial diastólica maior que 105 mmHg (P = 0,001), pressão sistólica maior que 180 mmHg (P < 0,001) e com duração da hipertensão maior que 3 anos (P = 0.003). Também houve maior freqüência de anormalidades à fundoscopia em pacientes com estágios mais graves de hipertensão segundo a classificação do V Joint National Committee (V-JNC). Não houve associação entre gravidade da hipertensão e as classes KW 1 e KW 2: 34,5% dos pacientes classificados como KW 1 tinham pressão diastólica acima de 105 mmHg, contra somente 25,3% daqueles classificados como KW 2. Esta categoria também foi mais freqüente em todos os estágios de hipertensão segundo o V-JNC. As anormalidades da classe 3 de KW foram pouco freqüentes, ocorrendo em somente 2,5% dos pacientes da coorte. Em um modelo de regressão logística, o estreitamento arteriolar difuso foi associado com maior pressão diastólica (P = 0,002) e maior idade (P < 0,001). Anormalidades de cruzamentos arteriovenosos foram associados com maior pressão sangüínea sistólica (P = 0,003) e duração da hipertensão maior do que 3 anos (P = 0,024). O valor preditivo positivo de qualquer anormalidade fundoscópica estimar a gravidade da hipertensão foi de 75,20% e o valor preditivo negativo, 41,75%. Observou-se maior proporção de eletrocardiograma anormal (qualquer anormalidade) e de sobrecarga ventricular esquerda em pacientes com pressão diastólica maior que 105 mmHg (P = 0,039 e P = 0,032 respectivamente) e com sistólica maior que 180 mmHg (P = 0,034 e P = 0,001 respectivamente). Anormalidades entre oftalmoscopia e eletrocardiograma não mostraramse associadas. Os resultados deste estudo demostraram que, apesar das anormalidades fundoscópicas terem sido mais freqüentes em hipertensos mais graves, o exame de fundode- olho não proporcionou uma idéia acurada da gravidade da hipertensão na maioria dos pacientes examinados por internistas e cardiologistas e, que a classificação de Keith, Wagener e Barker teve uma aplicação limitada. A observação de um cruzamento arteriovenoso alterado sugere que a pressão sistólica seja elevada. A presença de estreitamento arteriolar difuso é mais freqüente em pacientes mais velhos e naqueles com pressão diastólica elevada.

The volatiles (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) responsible for aroma are mainly present in skin of grape varieties. Thus, the present investigation is directed towards the optimisation of a solvent free methodology based on headspace-solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with gas chromatography–quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC–qMS) in order to establish the global volatile composition in pulp and skin of Bual and Bastardo Vitis vinifera L. varieties. A deep study on the extraction-influencing parameters was performed, and the best results, expressed as GC peak area, number of identified compounds and reproducibility, were obtained using 4 g of sample homogenised in 5 mL of ultra-pure Milli-Q water in a 20 mL glass vial with addition of 2 g of sodium chloride (NaCl). A divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane fibre was selected for extraction at 60 °C for 45 min under continuous stirring at 800 rpm. More than 100 VOCs and SVOCs, including 27 monoterpenoids, 27 sesquiterpenoids, 21 carbonyl compounds, 17 alcohols (from which 2 aromatics), 10 C13 norisoprenoids and 5 acids were identified. The results showed that, for both grape varieties, the levels and number of volatiles in skin were considerably higher than those observed in pulp. According to the data obtained by principal component analysis (PCA), the establishment of the global volatile signature of grape and the relationship between different part of grapes—pulp and skin, may be an useful tool to winemaker decision to define the vinification procedures that improves the organoleptic characteristics of the corresponding wines and consequently contributed to an economic valorization and consumer acceptance.

O estudo da distribuição espacial da lagarta-do-cartucho, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), na cultura do milho é fundamental para garantir a utilização de estratégias de controle, otimização de técnicas de amostragem, determinação de danos econômicos e incorporação da dinâmica espacial dentro do modelo populacional. O experimento foi conduzido em três campos contendo 100 parcelas cada, sendo amostradas 10 plantas ao acaso por parcela, num total de 1000 plantas por campo em cinco datas de amostragem. Foram contados o número de lagartas pequenas (menor que 10 mm) e grandes (maior que 10 mm) por planta. As lagartas pequenas apresentaram um ajuste muito bom à distribuição binomial negativa e não à Poisson, indicando que esta categoria larval encontra-se agregada no campo. Os números de lagartas grandes por planta ajustaram-se razoavelmente à distribuição binomial negativa, com algumas datas ajustando-se à distribuição de Poisson. Portanto, as lagartas pequenas (alta densidade populacional) têm distribuição agregada no campo, enquanto que as lagartas grandes (baixa densidade populacional) podem ser mais dispersas no campo, tendendo à aleatoriedade.

The present study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effects of feeding dairy cows with organic or inorganic sources of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and selenium (Se) on blood concentrations of these minerals, blood metabolic profiles, nutrient intake and milk yield and composition. Nineteen Holstein cows were selected and randomly assigned to two groups for receiving organic (n = 9) or inorganic (n = 10) sources of Zn, Cu and Se from 60 days before the expected date of calving to 80 days of lactation. Samples of feed, orts and milk were collected for analysis. Body condition score (BCS) was determined and blood samples were collected for analysis of Zn, Cu and Se concentrations, as well as for metabolic profile. Supplying organic or inorganic sources of Zn, Cu, and Se did not affect dry matter and nutrient intake, blood metabolic profile, milk yield and composition, plasma concentration of these minerals, and BCS or change the BCS in cows from 60 days before the expected date of calving to 80 days of lactation. An effect of time was observed on all feed intake variables, plasma concentrations of Zn and Se, milk yield, milk protein content, BCS and change in BCS.

In the present short review superovulation treatments commonly used for Bos taurus and/or Bos indicus will be addressed with emphasis in recent superstimulation protocols associated with pharmacological manipulation of the follicular dynamics to improve donor management and potentially embryo yield. Results obtained after superovulation treatments in which the time of LH surge is selectively delayed as an attempt to improve embryo yield are presented and discussed. (C) 2001 by Elsevier B.V.

Objectives. This study compared the durability of repair bond strength of a resin composite to a reinforced ceramic after three repair systems.Methods. Alumina-reinforced feldspathic ceramic blocks (Vitadur-alpha(R)) (N=30) were randomly divided into three groups according to the repair method: PR-Porcelain Repair Kit (Bisco) [etching with 9.5% hydrofluoric acid + silanization + adhesive]; CJ-CoJet Repair Kit (3M ESPE) [(chairside silica coating with 30 mu m SiO2 + silanization (ESPE(R)-Sil) + adhesive (Visio(TM)-Bond)]; CL-Clearfil Repair Kit [diamond surface roughening, etching with 40% H3PO4 + Clearfil Porcelain Bond Activator + Clearfil SE Bond)]. Resin composite was photo-polymerized on each conditioned ceramic block. Non-trimmed beam specimens were produced for the microtensile bond strength (mu TBS) tests. In order to study the hydrolytic durability of the repair methods, the beam specimens obtained from each block were randomly assigned to two conditions. Half of the specimens were tested either immediately after beam production (Dry) or after long-term water storage (37 degrees C, 150 days) followed by thermocyling (12,000 cycles, 5-55 degrees C) in a universal testing machine (1 mm/min). Failure types were analyzed under an optical microscope and SEM.Results. mu TBS results were significantly affected by the repair method (p=0.0001) and the aging conditions (p=0.0001) (two-way ANOVA, Tukey's test). In dry testing conditions, PR method showed significantly higher (p < 0.001) repair bond strength (19.8 +/- 3.8 MPa) than those of CJ and CL (12.4 +/- 4.7 and 9.9 +/- 2.9, respectively). After long-term water storage and thermocycling, CJ revealed significantly higher results (14.5 +/- 3.1 MPa) than those of PR (12.1 +/- 2.6 MPa) (p < 0.01) and CL (4.2 +/- 2.1 MPa) (p < 0.001). In all groups when tested in dry conditions, cohesive failure in the composite accompanied with adhesive failure at the interface (mixed failures), was frequently observed (76%, 80%, 65% for PR, CJ and CL, respectively). After aging conditions, while the specimens treated with PR and CJ presented primarily mixed failure types (52% and 87%, respectively), CL group presented mainly complete adhesive failures at the interface (70%).Significance. Hydrolytic stability of the repair method based on silica coating and silanization was superior to the other repair strategies for the ceramic tested. (C) 2009 Academy of Dental Materials. The different roles played by Lorentz connections in general relativity and in teleparallel gravity are reviewed. Some of the consequences of this difference are discussed.
