The hierarchy of directional interactions in visual motion processing

It is well known that context influences our perception of visual motion direction. For example, spatial and temporal context manipulations can be used to induce two well-known motion illusions: direction repulsion and the direction after-effect (DAE). Both result in inaccurate perception of direction when a moving pattern is either superimposed on (direction repulsion), or presented following adaptation to (DAE), another pattern moving in a different direction. Remarkable similarities in tuning characteristics suggest that common processes underlie the two illusions. What is not clear, however, is whether the processes driving the two illusions are expressions of the same or different neural substrates. Here we report two experiments demonstrating that direction repulsion and the DAE are, in fact, expressions of different neural substrates. Our strategy was to use each of the illusions to create a distorted perceptual representation upon which the mechanisms generating the other illusion could potentially operate. We found that the processes mediating direction repulsion did indeed access the distorted perceptual representation induced by the DAE. Conversely, the DAE was unaffected by direction repulsion. Thus parallels in perceptual phenomenology do not necessarily imply common neural substrates. Our results also demonstrate that the neural processes driving the DAE occur at an earlier stage of motion processing than those underlying direction repulsion.

Near infrared electroluminescence from neodymium complex-doped polymer light emitting diodes

Organic light emitting diode devices employing organometallic Nd(9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one)(3) complexes as near infrared emissive dopants dispersed within poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) host matrices have been fabricated by spin-casting layers of the doped polymer onto glass/indium tin oxide (ITO)/3,4-polyethylene-dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT) substrates. Room temperature electroluminescence, centered at similar to 1065 nm. was observed from devices top contacted by evaporated aluminum or calcium metal cathodes and was assigned to transitions between the F-4(3/2) -> I-4(11/2) levels of the Nd3+ ions. In particular, a near infrared irradiance of 8.5 nW/mm(2) and an external quantum efficiency of 0.007% was achieved using glass/ITO/PEDOT/PVK:Nd(9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one)(3)/Ca/Al devices. Rates for repair of pBR 322 DNA radicals by thiols as measured by the gas explosion technique: evidence that counter-ion condensation and co-ion depletion are significant at physiological ionic strength.

Rates of rapair of pBR 322 plasmid DNA radicals by thiols of varying net charge (Z) at pH 7 and physiological ionic strength were measured using the oxygen explosion technique. The extent of conversion of supercoiled to relaxed circular plasmid was measured by HPLC as a function of the time of oxygen exposure before or after irradiation, the time-courses being fitted by a pseudo-first-order kinetic expression with k1 = k2[RSH]. Values of k2 (M-1 S-1) were: 2.1 x 10(5) (GSH, Z = -1), 1.4 x 10(6) (2-mercaptoethanol, Z = 0), 1.2 x 10(7) (cysteamine, Z = +1), 6.6 x 10(7) (WR-1065 or N-(2-mercaptoethyl)-1,3-diamino?? propane, Z = +2). The approximately 6-fold increase in rate with each unit increase in Z is attributed to concentration of cationic thiols near DNA as a consequence of counter-ion condensation and reduced levels of anionic thiols near DNA owing to co-ion depletion. The results are quantitatively consistent with chemical repair as a significant mechanism for radioprotection of cells by neutral and cationic thiols under aerobic conditions, but indicate that repair by GSH will compete effectively with oxygen only at low oxygen tension.

Assessing the sensitivity and specificity of fish community indicators to management action

We assessed ten trophodynamic indicators of ecosystem status for their sensitivity and specificity to fishing management using a size-resolved multispecies fish community model. The responses of indicators to fishing depended on effort and the size selectivity (sigmoid or Gaussian) of fishing mortality. The highest specificity against sigmoid (trawl-like) size selection was seen from inverse fishing pressure and the large fish indicator, but for Gaussian size selection, the large species indicator was most specific. Biomass, mean trophic level of the community and of the catch, and fishing in balance had the lowest specificity against both size selectivities. Length-based indicators weighted by biomass, rather than abundance, were more sensitive and specific to fishing pressure. Most indicators showed a greater response to sigmoid than Gaussian size selection. Indicators were generally more sensitive at low levels of effort because of nonlinear sensitivity in trophic cascades to fishing mortality. No single indicator emerged as superior in all respects, so given available data, multiple complementary indicators are recommended for community monitoring in the ecosystem approach to fisheries management.

Late-Glacial and early Holocene marine 14C reservoir ages off North Iceland (16-9 cal kyr BP)

Tephrochronological age models and 48 14C age determinations on molluscs and foraminifera (planktonic and benthic) are applied for the calculation of marine 14C reservoir age variability during a time period covering the Heinrich event H1 to early Holocene (16–9 cal kyr BP). Our data source consists of four high-resolution marine sediment cores (HM107-04, HM107-05, MD99-2271, MD99-2275) from the North Icelandic shelf. The marine reservoir age (ΔR) is found to be extremely variable, ranging from 385 to 1065 14C years. Extreme ΔR values occur at the end of H1, with values around 1000 14C years (~15 cal kyr BP), probably due to reduced northward flow of well-ventilated subtropical surface waters and a southward expansion of polar waters, as well as an expansion of sea ice limiting air-sea gas exchange. With the onset of the Bølling-Allerød interstadial, the ΔR values decrease towards 0 14C years suggesting a more vigorous North Atlantic Current and an active meridional overturning circulation system. During the Younger Dryas stadial, ΔR values are consistently around 700 14C years suggesting e renewed expansion of polar waters and a weakened meridional overtuning circulation. Interestingly, ΔR values remain high (~200 14C years) at the onset of the Holocene suggesting continued high influence of polar waters. Subsequently, ΔR values rapidly decrease to ~¬ 250 14C years around 11 cal kyr BP, indicating increased air-sea CO2 exchange with the coeval atmosphere. The ΔR values average around 0 14C years from around 10.5 to 9.0 cal kyr BP.

Ein gedachtes Ortsnetz wird dann in quadratische Bereiche mit der Seitenlänge l und mit M Teilnehmern aufgeteilt. Für verschiedene Strukturen des Leiternetzes in der Teilnehmerebene werden die Mindestlängen der Leiter und der Kabelkanäle berechnet. Unter anderem zeigt sich, daß unabhängig von der Struktur des Leiternetzes die Kabelkanäle, ein dominierender Kostenanteil in der Teilnehmerebene, praktisch gleich lang sind, nämlich l/M^0,5 je Teilnehmer.

Comprende el resumen de varios trabajos de investigación de ballenas del Pacífico sureste, especialmente de la ballena cachalote Physeter catodon L., especie intensamente cazada e industrializada en las décadas de los años 1960 a 1980 en Chile y Perú. La investigación ballenera en esta zona empezó en 1958 con la preparación de biólogos en los dos países, quienes colectaron el material que luego fue analizado y dio las bases científicas para una caza conservacionista.
