Orthorhombic single crystals of TbMn0.5Fe0.5O3 are found to exhibit spin-reorientation, magnetization reversal, and weak ferromagnetism. Strong anisotropy effects are evident in the temperature dependent magnetization measurements along the three crystallographic axes a, b, and c. A broad magnetic transition is visible at T-N(Fe/Mn) = 286K due to paramagnetic to A(x)G(y)C(z) ordering. A sharp transition is observed at T-SR(Fe/Mn) = 28 K, which is pronounced along c axis in the form of a sharp jump in magnetization where the spins reorient to G(x)A(y)F(z) configuration. The negative magnetization observed below T-SR(Fe/Mn) along c axis is explained in terms of domain wall pinning. A component of weak ferromagnetism is observed in field-scans along c-axis but below 28 K. Field-induced steps-like transitions are observed in hysteresis measurement along b axis below 28 K. It is noted that no sign of Tb-order is discernible down to 2K. TbMn0.5Fe0.5O3 could be highlighted as a potential candidate to evaluate its magneto-dielectric effects across the magnetic transitions. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

We report the origin of room temperature weak ferromagnetic behavior of polycrystalline Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 (PFW) powder. The structure and magnetic properties of the ceramic powder prepared by a Columbite method were characterized by X-ray and neutron diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. Rietveld analysis of diffraction data confirm the formation of single phase PFW, without traces of any parasitic pyrochlore phase. PFW was found to crystallize in the cubic structure at room temperature. The Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data measured at room temperature confirmed the G-type antiferromagnetic structure of PFW in our sample. However, along with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Fe spins, we have observed the existence of weak ferromagnetism at room temperature through: (i) a clear opening of hysteresis (M-H) loop, (ii) bifurcation of the field cooled and zero-field cooled susceptibility; supported by Mossbauer spectroscopy results. The P-E loop measurements showed a non-linear slim hysteresis loop at room temperature due to the electronic conduction through the local inhomogeneities in the PFW crystallites and the inter-particle regions. By corroborating all the magnetic measurements, especially the spin glass nature of the sample, with the conduction behavior of the sample, we report here that the observed ferromagnetism originates at these local inhomogeneous regions in the sample, where the Fe-spins are not perfectly aligned antiferromagnetically due to the compositional disordering. We report the magnetic and electrical characteristics of polycrystalline FeTiO3 synthesized at high pressure that is isostructural with acentric LiNbO3 (LBO). Piezoresponse force microscopy, optical second harmonic generation, and magnetometry demonstrate ferroelectricity at and below room temperature and weak ferromagnetism below ~120??K. These results validate symmetry-based criteria and first-principles calculations of the coexistence of ferroelectricity and weak ferromagnetism in a series of transition metal titanates crystallizing in the LBO structure.

Ferromagnetic behaviour at 300 K has been observed from SQUID experiments in ClO4- doped PMTh, the samples were prepared electrochemically at 25 degreesC in acetonitrile with 0.1M LiClO4 and then partially reduced. Atomic absorption analysis discards magnetic particles contamination. Hysteresis curves were observed for pressed pellets in ail range of temperatures (300K-2K). The remanence at 300 K and pressed at 250 bar was around 8.06x10(-4) emu/g with coercitivity of 130 Oe. The influence of water content in the solvent during the sample synthesis and the pressure is shown. We discuss a model that explains our data in terms of the anisotropic superexchange Dziatoshinski-Moriya interaction giving rise to weak ferromagnetism.

A weak ferromagnetic phase is shown in pressed pellets of partially doped poly(3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) in the whole range from 1.8 to 300 K in magnetic measurements. Thermoremanence data have been used to estimate the suppression of this phase to be around 815 K. We also show that instead of the classical antiferromagnetism for the first-order interaction that gives weak ferromagnetism as a second-order effect, metamagnetic behavior is observed. X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements and magnetization measurements allowed us to estimate that 8.1% of the total number of spins contributes to the weak ferromagnetism at room temperature. The doping level obtained from the ESR data is in good agreement with that estimated from electron dispersive spectroscopy measurements.

X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements have been performed on a conducting free-standing film of polyaniline plasticized and protonated with di-n-dodecyl ester of sulfosuccinic acid (DDoESSA). The magnetic field was applied parallel and perpendicular to the plane of the film. At around 75 K a transition is observed from Pauli susceptibility to a localized state in which the spin 1/2 polarons behave as spin 1/2 dimers. A rough estimation of the intradimer and interdimer exchange constants is obtained. Below 5 K, ESR data reveal a weak ferromagnetism with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector mainly oriented in the plane of the film. The existence of a relatively well-defined n-fold axis along the chain direction in the crystalline regions confers a symmetry compatible with such analysis. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

We have investigated the structure and magnetic properties of the perovskite oxides of the formula La2Fe1-xMn2xCr1-xO6 (0 < x < 1.0). For 0 < x <= 0.5, the members adopt the orthorhombic (Pbnm) structure, where the transition metal atoms are disordered at the 4b sites and the MO6 (M = Fe, Mn, Cr) octahedra become increasingly distorted with increasing x. For 0.65 <= x < 1.0, the members adopt the rhombohedral (R-3c) structure that is similar to LaMnO3+delta (delta >= 0.1) where the MO6 octahedra are undistorted. While the magnetic properties of the latter series are largely similar to the parent LaMnO3+delta arising from the double-exchange (DE) between mixed valent Mn-III/Mn-IV, the magnetic properties of the orthorhombic members show a distinct (albeit weak) ferromagnetism (T-C similar to 200 K) that seems to arise from a Mn-III-mediated superexchange (SE) between Fe-III/Cr-III in the disordered perovskite structure containing Fe-III, Mn-III and Cr-III.

Ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature is reported in metal-free-conducting polymer samples of poly(3-methylthiophene) doped with ClO 4 -. Magnetic moments associated with spin 1/2 positive polarons are possibly interacting through a Dzialoshinski-Moriya anisotropic superexchange via the dopant anions, giving rise to weak ferromagnetism. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The intercalation of pyridine in the layered manganese thiophosphate, MnPS3, has been examined in detail by a variety of techniques. The reaction is interesting since none of the anticipated changes in optical and electrical properties associated with intercalation of electron donating molecules is observed. The only notable change in the properties of the host lattice is in the nature of the low-temperature magnetic ordering; while MnPS3 orders antiferromagnetically below 78 K, the intercalated compound shows weak ferromagnetism probably due to a canted spin structure. Vibrational spectra clearly show that the intercalated species are pyridinium ions solvated by neutral pyridine molecules. The corresponding reduced sites of the host lattice, however, were never observed. The molecules in the solvation shell are exchangeable. Although the reaction appears to be topotactic and reversible, from XRD, a more detailed analysis of the products of deintercalation reveal that it is not so. The intercalation proceeds by an ion exchange/intercalation mechanism wherein the intercalated species are pyridinium ions solvated by neutral molecules with charge neutrality being preserved not by electron transfer but by a loss of Mn2+ ions from the lattice. The experimental evidence leading to this conclusion is discussed and it is shown that this model can account satisfactorily for the observed changes (or lack of it) in the optical, electrical, vibrational, and magnetic properties.

Mn- doped SrTiO3.0, when synthesized free of impurities, is a paramagnetic insulator with interesting dielectric properties. Since delocalized charge carriers are known to promote ferromagnetism in a large number of systems via diverse mechanisms, we have looked for the possibility of any intrinsic, spontaneous magnetization by simultaneous doping of Mn ions and electrons into SrTiO3 via oxygen vacancies, thereby forming SrTi1-xMnxO3-delta, to the extent of making the doped system metallic. We find an absence of any enhancement of the magnetization in the metallic sample when compared with a similarly prepared Mn doped, however, insulating sample. Our results, thus, are not in agreement with a recent observation of a weak ferromagnetism in metallic Mn doped SrTiO3 system.

Dilute magnetic semiconducting Zn1-xCrxS (x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) nanoparticles were synthesized by the co-precipitation technique using thioglycerol as the capping agent. Powder X-ray diffraction studies showed that Zn1-xCrxS nanoparticles exhibit zinc blende structure with no secondary phase, indicating that Cr ions are substituted at the Zn sites. Photoluminescence and Raman studies show the incorporation of Cr in ZnS nanoparticles. X-ray absorption studies depict that the valence of Zn remains unchanged and maintained in the divalent state, upon doping with Cr. The M-H curves at room temperature indicate the presence of weak ferromagnetism at room temperature due to structural defects. The increase in ferromagnetism with increasing Cr content up to 3%, demonstrates the possibility of tailoring the weak ferromagnetism in ZnS by appropriate Cr doping. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. We report the origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties of Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O-3 (PFN) ceramic sample prepared by modified solid-state reaction synthesis by a single-step method, based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron diffraction (ND), Mossbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy results. Formation of single-phase monoclinic PFN ceramic with Cm space group was confirmed by XRD and ND at RT. The morphology studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed uniform microstructure of the sample with average grain size of similar to 2 mu m. The ND, Mossbauer spectroscopy, M-H loop and EPR studies were carried out to confirm the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. A clear opening of hysteresis (M-H) loop is evidenced as the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. EPR spectrum clearly shows the ferromagnetism through a good resonance signal. The symmetric EPR line shape with g = 1.9895 observed in PFN sample was identified to be due to Fe3+ ions. Mossbauer spectroscopy at RT shows superparamagnetic behaviour with presence of Fe in 3+ valence state. Ferroelectric P-E loops on PFN at RT confirm the existing ferroelectric ordering. Our observation is in agreement with literature, and it supports that the origin of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is isolated, i.e. from different regions in the sample. Our results do not support the multiferroic nature of PFN at RT.

Multiferroic Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 ceramics were synthesized via a modified two-stage Columbite method. Single phase formation was confirmed from the analysis of x-ray and neutron diffraction patterns recorded at room temperature. Structural analysis of the diffraction data reveals cubic phase (space group Pm-3m) for the title compound. Magnetic structure of the title compound at room temperature exhibits G-type antiferromagnetic structure. The Mossbauer spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) studies were carried out at 300 K. The isomer shift and quadrupole splitting of the Mossbauer spectra confirms the trivalent state of iron (Fe3+). The Mossbauer spectra also suggest that the iron and tungsten are randomly distributed at the octahedral, B site. EPR spectra show a single broad line associated with Fe3+ ions. Both spectra clearly exhibit weak ferromagnetic behaviour of Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 ceramic at 300 K. Considering neutron diffraction, Mossbauer and EPR results together, it may be stated here that Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 exhibits antiferromagnetic behavior along with weak ferromagnetism at room temperature.

We investigate solitary excitations in a model of a one-dimensional antiferromagnet including a single-ion anisotropy and a Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya antisymmetric exchange interaction term. We employ the Holstein-Primakoff transformation, the coherent state ansatz and the time variational principle. We obtain two partial differential equations of motion by using the method of multiple scales and applying perturbation theory. By so doing, we show that the motion of the coherent amplitude must satisfy the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We give the single-soliton solution.

CuF2 is known to be an antiferromagnetic compound with a weak ferromagnetism due to the anisotropy of its monoclinic unit cell (Dzialoshinsky-Moriya mechanism). We investigate the magnetic ordering of this compound by means of ab initio periodic unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations and by cluster calculations which employ state-of-the-art configuration interaction expansions and modern density functional theory techniques. The combined use of periodic and cluster models permits us to firmly establish that the antiferromagnetic order arises from the coupling of one-dimensional subunits which themselves exhibit a very small ferromagnetic coupling between Cu neighbor cations. This magnetic order could be anticipated from the close correspondence between CuF2 and rutile crystal structures.
