Highly-sensitive optical fluorescent extruded plastic films are reported for the detection of gaseous and dissolved CO2. The pH-sensitive fluorescent dye used is 8-Hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (HPTS, PTS-) coated on the surface of hydrophilic fumed silica and the base is tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH). The above components are used to create an HPTS pigment (i.e. HPTS/SiO2/TBAH) with a high CO2 sensitivity (%CO2(S=1/2) = 0.16%) and fast 50% response (t50↓) = 2 s and recovery (t50↑) = 5 s times. Highly CO2-sensitive plastic films are then fabricated, via the extrusion of the HPTS pigment powder in low-density polyethylene (LDPE). As with the HPTS-pigment, the luminescence intensity (at 515 nm) and absorbance (at 475 nm) of the HPTS plastic film decreases as the %CO2 in the ambient gas phase increases. The HPTS plastic film exhibits a high CO2 sensitivity, %CO2(S=1/2), of 0.29%, but a response time ˂2 min and recovery time ˂40 min, which is slower than that of the HPTS pigment. The HPTS plastic film is very stable under ambient conditions, (with a shelf life ˃ six month when stored in the dark but under otherwise ambient conditions). Moreover, the HPTS-film is stable in water, salt solution and even in acid (pH=2), and in each of these media it can be used to detect dissolved CO2.

The interaction of OH- with Fe(TPP)(+), Fe(TDCPP)(+), Fe(TMP)(+) and Fe(TFPP)(+) in 1,2-dichloroethane was studied by titrating FeP solutions with aliquots of a solution of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide in acetonitrile. The number of OH- ions (n) coordinated to the FeP and the stability constants (beta(n)) for the FeP-OH- complexes were calculated from UV-Vis absorbance data and iron spin states were determined through EPR spectroscopy, Fe(TMP) (+) forms a high-spin mono-hydroxo complex, while Fe(TPP)I and Fe(TDCPP)(+) form high-spin bis-hydroxo complexes. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the formation of bis-hydroxo complexes from Fe(TPP) (+) has been reported, and this was possible because the studies were carried out in basic organic media, In this same medium, Fe-III-Fe-II reduction upon OH- addition to Fe(TFPP) (+) was observed, without concomitant formation of the mu-oxo dimeric species [Fe(TFPP)](2)O. It has been demonstrated that iodine does have an important influence on atmospheric chemistry, especially the formation of new particles and the enrichment of iodine in marine aerosols. It was pointed out that the most probable chemical species involved in the production or growth of these particles are iodine oxides, produced photochemically from biogenic halocarbon emissions and/or iodine emission from the sea surface. However, the iodine chemistry from gaseous to particulate phase in the coastal atmosphere and the chemical nature of the condensing iodine species are still not understood. A Tenax / Carbotrap adsorption sampling technique and a thermo-desorption / cryo-trap / GC-MS system has been further developed and improved for the volatile organic iodine species in the gas phase. Several iodo-hydrocarbons such as CH3I, C2H5I, CH2ICl, CH2IBr and CH2I2 etc., have been measured in samples from a calibration test gas source (standards), real air samples and samples from seaweeds / macro-algae emission experiments. A denuder sampling technique has been developed to characterise potential precursor compounds of coastal particle formation processes, such as molecular iodine in the gas phase. Starch, TMAH (TetraMethylAmmonium Hydroxide) and TBAH (TetraButylAmmonium Hydroxide) coated denuders were tested for their efficiencies to collect I2 at the inner surface, followed by a TMAH extraction and ICP/MS determination, adding tellurium as an internal standard. The developed method has been proved to be an effective, accurate and suitable process for I2 measurement in the field, with the estimated detection limit of ~0.10 ng∙L-1 for a sampling volume of 15 L. An H2O/TMAH-Extraction-ICP/MS method has been developed for the accurate and sensitive determination of iodine species in tropospheric aerosol particles. The particle samples were collected on cellulose-nitrate filters using conventional filter holders or on cellulose nitrate/tedlar-foils using a 5-stage Berner impactor for size-segregated particle analysis. The water soluble species as IO3- and I- were separated by anion exchanging process after water extraction. Non-water soluble species including iodine oxide and organic iodine were digested and extracted by TMAH. Afterwards the triple samples were analysed by ICP/MS. The detection limit for particulate iodine was determined to be 0.10~0.20 ng•m-3 for sampling volumes of 40~100 m3. The developed methods have been used in two field measurements in May 2002 and September 2003, at and around the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station (MHARS) located at the west coast of Ireland. Elemental iodine as a precursor of the iodine chemistry in the coastal atmosphere, was determined in the gas phase at a seaweed hot-spot around the MHARS, showing I2 concentrations were in the range of 0~1.6 ng∙L-1 and indicating a positive correlation with the ozone concentration. A seaweed-chamber experiment performed at the field measurement station showed that the I2 emission rate from macro-algae was in the range of 0.019~0.022 ng•min-1•kg-1. During these experiments, nanometer-particle concentrations were obtained from the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) measurements. Particle number concentrations were found to have a linear correlation with elemental iodine in the gas phase of the seaweeds chamber, showing that gaseous I2 is one of the important precursors of the new particle formation in the coastal atmosphere. Iodine contents in the particle phase were measured in both field campaigns at and around the field measurement station. Total iodine concentrations were found to be in the range of 1.0 ~ 21.0 ng∙m-3 in the PM2.5 samples. A significant correlation between the total iodine concentrations and the nanometer-particle number concentrations was observed. The particulate iodine species analysis indicated that iodide contents are usually higher than those of iodate in all samples, with ratios in the range of 2~5:1. It is possible that those water soluble iodine species are transferred through the sea-air interface into the particle phase. The ratio of water soluble (iodate + iodide) and non-water soluble species (probably iodine oxide and organic iodine compounds) was observed to be in the range of 1:1 to 1:2. It appears that higher concentrated non-water soluble species, as the products of the photolysis from the gas phase into the particle phase, can be obtained in those samples while the nucleation events occur. That supports the idea that iodine chemistry in the coastal boundary layer is linked with new particle formation events. Furthermore, artificial aerosol particles were formed from gaseous iodine sources (e.g. CH2I2) using a laboratory reaction-chamber experiment, in which the reaction constant of the CH2I2 photolysis was calculated to be based upon the first order reaction kinetic. The end products of iodine chemistry in the particle phase were identified and quantified.

The preparation of a steam-based hydrothermally stable transition alumina is reported. The gel was derived from a synthetic sol-gel route where Al-tri-sec-butoxide is hydrolysed in the presence of a non-ionic surfactant (EO20PO70EO20), HCl as the catalyst and water (H2O/Al = 6); the condensation was enhanced by treating the hydrolysed gel with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH), after which it was dried at 60 °C by solvent evaporation. The so-obtained mesophase was crystallized under argon at 1200 °C (1 h) producing a transition alumina containing δ/α, and possibly θ, alumina phases. Due to its surface acidity, the pyrolysis conditions transform the block copolymer into a cross-linked char structure that embeds the alumina crystallites. Calcination at 650 °C generates a fully porous material by burning the char; a residual carbon of 0.2 wt.% was found, attributed to the formation of surface (oxy)carbides. As a result, this route produces a transition alumina formed by nanoparticles of about 30 nm in size on average, having surface areas in the range of 59-76 m2 g-1 with well-defined mesopores centered at 14 nm. The material withstands steam at 900 °C with a relative surface area rate loss lower than those reported for δ-aluminas, the state-of-the-art MSU-X γ-alumina and other pure γ-aluminas. The hydrothermal stability was confirmed under relevant CH4 steam reforming conditions after adding Ni; a much lower surface area decay and higher CH4 conversion compared to a state-of-the-art MSU-X based Ni catalyst were observed. Two effects are important in explaining the properties of such an alumina: the char protects the particles against sintering, however, the dominant effect is provided by the TBAOH treatment that makes the mesophase more resistant to coarsening and sintering. Cobalt hydroxide, cobalt oxyhydroxide and cobalt oxide nanomaterials were synthesized through simple soft chemistry. The cobalt hydroxide displays hexagonal morphology with clear edges 20 nm long. This morphology and nanosize is retained through to cobalt oxide Co3O4 through a topotactical relationship. Cobalt oxyhydroxide and cobalt oxide nanomaterials were synthesized through oxidation and low temperature calcination from the as-prepared cobalt hydroxide. Characterisation of these cobalt-based nanomaterials were fully developed, including X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy combined with selected area electron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Bonding of the divalent cobalt hydroxide from the oxyhydroxide and oxides by studying their high resolution XPS spectra for Co 2p3/2 and O 1s. Raman spectroscopy of the as-prepared Co(OH)2, CoO(OH) and Co3O4 nanomaterials characterised each material. The thermal stability of the materials Co(OH)2 and CoO(OH) were established. This research has developed methodology for the synthesis of cobalt oxide and cobalt oxyhydroxide nanodiscs at low temperatures.

The transition of cubic indium hydroxide to cubic indium oxide has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis complimented with hot stage Raman spectroscopy. Thermal analysis shows the transition of In(OH)3 to In2O3 occurs at 219°C. The structure and morphology of In(OH)3 synthesised using a soft chemical route at low temperatures was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. A topotactical relationship exists between the micro/nano-cubes of In(OH)3 and In2O3. The Raman spectrum of In(OH)3 is characterised by an intense sharp band at 309 cm-1 attributed to ν1 In-O symmetric stretching mode, bands at 1137 and 1155 cm-1 attributed to In-OH δ deformation modes, bands at 3083, 3215, 3123 and 3262 cm-1 assigned to the OH stretching vibrations. Upon thermal treatment of In(OH)3 new Raman bands are observed at 125, 295, 488 and 615 cm-1 attributed to In2O3. Changes in the structure of In(OH)3 with thermal treatment is readily followed by hot stage Raman spectroscopy.

Cubic indium hydroxide nanomaterials were obtained by a low temperature soft-chemical method without any surfactants. The transition of nano-cubic indium hydroxide to cubic indium oxide during dehydroxylation has been studied by infrared emission spectroscopy. The spectra are related to the structure of the materials and the changes in the structure upon thermal treatment. The infrared absorption spectrum of In(OH)3 is characterised by an intense OH deformation band at 1150 cm-1 and two O-H stretching bands at 3107 and 3221 cm-1. In the infrared emission spectra, the hydroxyl-stretching and hydroxyl-bending bands diminish dramatically upon heating, and no intensity remains after 200 °C. However, new low intensity bands are found in the OH deformation region at 915 cm-1 and in OH stretching region at 3437 cm-1. These bands are attributed to the vibrations of newly formed InOH bonds because of the release and transfer of protons during calcination of the nanomaterial. The use of infrared emission spectroscopy enables the low-temperature phase transition brought about through dehydration of In(OH)3 nanocubes to be studied.

The presence of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) in Bayer residue slurry inhibits the effectiveness of the seawater neutralisation process to reduce the pH and aluminium concentration in the residue. An increase in the slurry pH (reversion), after seawater neutralisation, is caused by the dissolution of calcium hydroxide and hydrocalumite (solid components found in bauxite refinery residue). Reversion was not observed when the final solution pH was greater than 10.5, due to hydrocalumite being in a state of equilibrium at high pH. Hydrocalumite has been found to form during the neutralisation process when high concentrations of calcium hydroxide are present in the residue liquor. The dissolution of hydrocalumite releases hydroxyl (OH-) and aluminium ions back into solution after the seawater neutralisation (SWN) process, which causes pH and aluminium reversion to occur. This investigation looks at the effect of Ca(OH)2 and subsequently hydrocalumite on the pH and aluminium concentration in bauxite refinery residue liquors after the SWN process.

Verification testing of two model technologies in pilot scale to remove arsenic and antimony based on reverse osmosis and chemical coagulation/filtration systems was conducted in Spiro Tunnel Water Filtration Plant located in Park City, Utah, US. The source water was groundwater in abandoned silver mine, naturally contaminated by 60-80 ppb of arsenic and antimony below 10 ppb. This water represents one of the sources of drinking water for Park City and constitutes about 44% of the water supply. The failure to remove antimony efficiently by coagulation/filtration (only 4.4% removal rate) under design conditions is discussed in terms of the chemistry differences between Sb (III, V) and As (III, V). Removal of Sb(V) at pH > 7, using coagulation/filtration technology, requires much higher (50 to 80 times) concentration of iron (III) than As. The stronger adsorption of arsenate over a wider pH range can be explained by the fact that arsenic acid is tri-protic, whereas antimonic acid is monoprotic. This difference in properties of As(V) and Sb(V) makes antimony (V) more difficult to be efficiently removed in low concentrations of iron hydroxide and alkaline pH waters, especially in concentration of Sb < 10 ppb.

Raman and thermo-Raman spectroscopy have been applied to study the mineral formerly known as manasseite now simply renamed as hydrotalcite-2H Mg6Al2(OH)16[CO3]⋅4H2O. The mineral is a member of the homonymous hydrotalcite supergroup. Hydrogen bond distances calculated using a Libowitzky-type empirical function varied between 2.61 and 3.00 Å. Stronger hydrogen bonds were formed by water units as compared to the hydroxyl units. Raman spectroscopy enabled the identification of bands attributed to the hydroxyl units. Two Raman bands at 1059 and 1064 cm-1 are assigned to symmetric stretching modes of the carbonate anion. Thermal treatment shifts these bands to higher wavenumbers indicating a change in the strength of the carbonate bonding.

In this report, a detailed FTIR fitting analysis was used to recognize Mg, Zn and Al homogeneous distribution in MgxZnyAl(x+y)/2-Layered double hydroxide (LDH) hydroxyl layer. In detail, OH-Mg2Al:OH-Mg3 ratios decreased from 95.2:4.8 (MIR) and 94.2:5.8 (NIR) to 58.9:41.1 (MIR) and 61.8:38.2 (NIR), when Mg:Al increased from 2.2:1.0 to 4.1:1.0 in MgAl-LDHs. These fitting results were similar with theoretical calculations of 94.3:5.7 and 59.0:41.0. In a further analysis of MgxZnyAl(x+y)/2-LDHs, OH bonded Zn2Mg, Zn2Al, MgZnAl, Mg2Al and Mg2Zn peaks were identified at 3420, 3430, 3445–3450, 3454 and 3545 cm-1, respectively. With the decrease of Mg:Zn from 3:1 to 1:3, metal-hydroxyl bands changed from OH-Mg2Al and MgZnAl (with a ratio of 49.4:50.6) to OH-MgZnAl and Zn2Al (with a ratio of 55.0:45.0). They were also similar with theoretical calculations of 47.6:52.4 and 54.6:45.4. As a result, these results show that there is an ordered cation distribution in MgxZnyAl(x+y)/2-LDH, and FTIR is feasible in recognizing this structure.

We have studied the molecular structure of the mineral glaucocerinite (Zn,Cu)5Al3(SO4)1.5(OH)169(H2O) using a combination of Raman and infrared spectroscopy. The mineral is one of the hydrotalcite supergroup of natural layered double hydroxides. The Raman spectrum is characterised by an intense Raman band at 982 cm1 with a low intensity band at 1083 cm1. These bands are attributed to the sulphate symmetric and antisymmetric stretching mode. The infrared spectrum is quite broad with a peak at 1020 cm1. A series of Raman bands at 546, 584, 602, 625 and 651 cm1 are assigned to the m4 (SO4)2 bending modes. The observation of multiple bands provides evidence for the reduction in symmetry of the sulphate anion from Td to C2v or even lower symmetry. The Raman band at 762 cm1 is attributed to a hydroxyl deformation mode associated with AlOH units. Vibrational spectroscopy enables aspects of the molecular structure of glaucocerinite to be determined.
