A preocupação com o estudo das formas e dimensões das arcadas dentárias sempre esteve presente na ciência ortodôntica. Para a Ortodontia Lingual, que surgiu no final da década de 70, o primeiro artigo publicado foi o Fujita, onde relatou sobre a forma do arco a ser utilizado nesta técnica, a forma de cogumelo. Apesar de estar sendo divulgada de uma maneira mais intensa nestes últimos anos como uma solução estética definitiva e eficaz, o enfoque dos estudos sobre esta técnica tem sido a fabricação de novos materiais, técnicas de montagem do aparelho lingual e soluções clínicas, com poucas menções sobre a morfologia das arcadas dentárias. O presente trabalho tem a finalidade de estudar as formas e dimensões linguais das arcadas dentárias de indivíduos leucodermas com oclusão normal. Foram utilizados 47 pares de modelos de gesso de oclusão normal digitalizados pela face olcusal, previamente desgastadas até o terço médio da coroa para proporcionar melhor visualização. Por meio do programa CorelDraw 12 foram determinados pontos de referências e criados alguns pontos virtuais necessários para a realização das medidas. Os resultados determinaram três formas das arcadas dentárias linguais: cogumelo, árvore de Natal e mista. A maior prevalência foi a forma árvore de Natal, mas quando analisadas separadamente as arcadas dentárias linguais, encontrados no superior, maior prevalência da forma de cogumelo e no inferior da forma árvore de Natal. Conseqüentemente, esta foi a combinação mais prevalente entre as arcadas dentárias linguais superiores e inferiores. Propusemos diagramas para conformação de arcos ortodônticos linguais com base nos valores obtidos da amostra, determinando-se o quartil 1, mediana e quartil 3, como definidores dos tamanhos pequeno, médio e grande.

Nykyaikaiset pilvipalvelut tarjoavat suurille yrityksille mahdollisuuden tehostaa laskennallista tietojenkäsittelyä. Pilvipalveluiden käyttöönotto tuo mukanaan kuitenkin esimerkiksi useita tietoturvakysymyksiä, joiden vuoksi käyttöönoton tulee olla tarkasti suunniteltua. Tämä tutkimus esittelee kirjallisuuskatsaukseen perustuvan, asteittaisen suunnitelman pilvipalveluiden käyttöönotolle energialiiketoimintaympäristössä. Kohdeyrityksen sisäiset haastattelut ja katsaus nykyisiin energiateollisuuden pilviratkaisuihin muodostavat kokonaiskuvan käyttöönoton haasteista ja mahdollisuuksista. Tutkimuksen päätavoitteena on esittää ratkaisut tyypillisiin pilvipalvelun käyttöönotossa esiintyviin ongelmiin käyttöönottomallin avulla. Tutkimuksessa rakennettu käyttöönottomalli testattiin esimerkkitapauksen avulla ja malli todettiin toimivaksi. Ulkoisten palveluiden herättämien tietoturvakysymysten takia käyttöönoton ensimmäiset osiot, kuten lopputuotteen määrittely ja huolellinen suunnittelu, ovat koko käyttöönottoprosessin ydin. Lisäksi pilvipalveluiden käyttöönotto vaatii nykyiseltä käyttöympäristöltä uusia teknisiä ja hallinnollisia taitoja. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat pilvipalveluiden monipuolisen hyödyn erityisesti laskentatehon tarpeen vaihdellessa. Käyttöönottomallin rinnalle luotu kustannusvertailu tukee kirjallisuuskatsauksessa esille tuotuja hyötyjä ja tarjoaa kohdeyritykselle perusteen tutkimuksen eteenpäin viemiselle.

Bis(o-hydroxyacetophenone)nickel(II) dihydrate, on reaction with 1,3-pentanediamine, yields a bis-chelate complex [NiL2]center dot 2H(2)O (1) of mono-condensed tridentate Schiff base ligand HL {2-[1-(3-aminopentylimino)ethyl]phenol}. The Schiff base has been freed from the complex by precipitating the Nil, as a dimethylglyoximato complex. HL reacts smoothly with Ni(SCN)(2)center dot 4H(2)O furnishing the complex [NiL(NCS)] (2) and with CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O in the presence of NaN3 or NH4SCN producing [CuL(N-3)](2) (3) or [CuL(NCS)] (4). On the other hand, upon reaction with Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O, the Schiff base undergoes hydrolysis to yield ternary complexes [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]ClO4 (5) and [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]NO3 (6), respectively (Hhap = o-hydroxyacetophenone and pn = 1,3-pentanediamine). The ligand HL undergoes hydrolysis also on reaction with Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O or Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O to yield [Ni(hap)(2)] (7). The structures of the complexes 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In complex 2, Ni-II possesses square-planar geometry, being coordinated by the tridentate mono-negative Schiff base, L and the isothiocyanate group. The coordination environment around Cu-II in complex 3 is very similar to that in complex 2 but here two units are joined together by end-on, axial-equatorial azide bridges to result in a dimer in which the geometry around Cu-II is square pyramidal. In both 5 and 6, the Cu-II atoms display the square-pyramidal environment; the equatorial sites being coordinated by the two amine groups of 1,3-pentanediamine and two oxygen atoms of o-hydroxyacetophenone. The axial site is coordinated by a water molecule. Complex 7 is a square-planar complex with the Ni atom bonded to four oxygen atoms from two hap moieties. The mononuclear units of 2 and dinuclear units of 3 are linked by strong hydrogen bonds to form a one-dimensional network. The mononuclear units of 5 and 6 are joined together to form a dimer by very strong hydrogen bonds through the coordinated water molecule. Anion directed, template syntheses of two dinuclear copper(II) complexes of mono-condensed Schiff base ligand Hdipn (4-[(3-aminopentylimino)-methyl]-benzene-1,3-diol) involving 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopentane were realized in the presence of bridging azide and acetate anions. Both complexes, [Cu-2(dipn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) and [Cu-2(dip(n))(2)(OAc)(2)] (2) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two mononuclear units are joined together by basal-apical, double end-on azido bridges in complex 1 and by basal-apical, double mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridges in 2. Both complexes form rectangular grid-like supramolecular structures via H-bonds connecting the azide or acetate anion and the p-hydroxy group of 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 has antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.10 cm (1)) through the azide bridge while 2 has intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling through the acetate bridge and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic coupling through H-bonds (J = 2.85 cm (1), J' = -1.08 cm (1)). Cranioplasty is a common neurosurgical procedure. Free-hand molding of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) cement into complex three-dimensional shapes is often time-consuming and may result in disappointing cosmetic outcomes. Computer-assisted patient-specific implants address these disadvantages but are associated with long production times and high costs. In this study, we evaluated the clinical, radiological, and cosmetic outcomes of a time-saving and inexpensive intraoperative method to mold custom-made implants for immediate single-stage or delayed cranioplasty. Data were collected from patients in whom cranioplasty became necessary after removal of bone flaps affected by intracranial infection, tumor invasion, or trauma. A PMMA replica was cast between a negative form of the patient's own bone flap and the original bone flap with exactly the same shape, thickness, and dimensions. Clinical and radiological follow-up was performed 2 months post-surgery. Patient satisfaction (Odom criteria) and cosmesis (visual analogue scale for cosmesis) were evaluated 1 to 3 years after cranioplasty. Twenty-seven patients underwent intraoperative template-molded patient-specific cranioplasty with PMMA. The indications for cranioplasty included bone flap infection (56%, n = 15), calvarian tumor resection (37%, n = 10), and defect after trauma (7%, n = 2). The mean duration of the molding procedure was 19 ± 7 min. Excellent radiological implant alignment was achieved in 94% of the cases. All (n = 23) but one patient rated the cosmetic outcome (mean 1.4 years after cranioplasty) as excellent (70%, n = 16) or good (26%, n = 6). Intraoperative cast-molded reconstructive cranioplasty is a feasible, accurate, fast, and cost-efficient technique that results in excellent cosmetic outcomes, even with large and complex skull defects.

The replication of many viral and subviral pathogens as well as the amplification of certain cellular genes proceeds via a rolling circle mechanism. For potato spindle tuber (PSTVd) and related viroids, the possible role of a circular (−)strand RNA as a template for synthesis of (+)strand progeny is unclear. Infected plants appear to contain only multimeric linear (−)strand RNAs, and attempts to initiate infection with multimeric (−)PSTVd RNAs generally have failed. To examine critically the infectivity of monomeric (−)strand viroid RNAs, we have developed a ribozyme-based expression system for the production of precisely full length (−)strand RNAs whose termini are capable of undergoing facile circularization in vitro. Mechanical inoculation of tomato seedlings with electrophoretically purified (−)PSTVd RNA led to a small fraction of plants becoming infected whereas parallel assays with an analogous tomato planta macho viroid (−)RNA resulted in a much larger fraction of infected plants. Ribozyme-mediated production of (−)PSTVd RNA in transgenic plants led to the appearance of monomeric circular (−)PSTVd RNA and large amounts of (+)PSTVd progeny. No monomeric circular (−)PSTVd RNA could be detected in naturally infected plants by using either ribonuclease protection or electrophoresis under partially denaturing conditions. Although not a component of the normal replicative pathway, precisely full length (−)PSTVd RNA appears to contain all of the structural and regulatory elements necessary for initiation of viroid replication.

Telomerase RNAs (TERs) are highly divergent between species, varying in size and sequence composition. Here, we identify a candidate for the telomerase RNA component of Leishmania genus, which includes species that cause leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease. Merging a thorough computational screening combined with RNA-seq evidence, we mapped a non-coding RNA gene localized in a syntenic locus on chromosome 25 of five Leishmania species that shares partial synteny with both Trypanosoma brucei TER locus and a putative TER candidate-containing locus of Crithidia fasciculata. Using target-driven molecular biology approaches, we detected a ∼2,100 nt transcript (LeishTER) that contains a 5' spliced leader (SL) cap, a putative 3' polyA tail and a predicted C/D box snoRNA domain. LeishTER is expressed at similar levels in the logarithmic and stationary growth phases of promastigote forms. A 5'SL capped LeishTER co-immunoprecipitated and co-localized with the telomerase protein component (TERT) in a cell cycle-dependent manner. Prediction of its secondary structure strongly suggests the existence of a bona fide single-stranded template sequence and a conserved C[U/C]GUCA motif-containing helix II, representing the template boundary element. This study paves the way for further investigations on the biogenesis of parasite TERT ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) and its role in parasite telomere biology.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant hereditary cancer syndrome characterized mostly by parathyroid, enteropancreatic, and anterior pituitary tumors. We present a case of an 8-year-old boy referred because of hypoglycemic attacks. His diagnosis was pancreatic insulinoma. Paternal grandmother died due to repeated gastroduodenal ulcerations and a paternal aunt presented similar manifestations. At a first evaluation, the father presented only gastric ulceration but subsequently developed hyperparathyroidism and lung carcinoid tumor. During almost 15 years of follow-up, three brothers and the index case presented hyperparathyroidism and hyperprolactinemia. Molecular study showed a G to A substitution in intron 4, at nine nucleotides upstream of the splicing acceptor site, causing a splicing mutation. All affected members of the family have the same mutation. Paternal grandmother and aunt were not studied and the mother does not carry any mutation. MEN1 is a rare condition that requires permanent medical assistance. Early clinical and genetic identification of affected individuals is essential for their own surveillance and also for genetic counseling.

Colloidal particles have been used to template the electrosynthesis of several materials, such as semiconductors, metals and alloys. The method allows good control over the thickness of the resulting material by choosing the appropriate charge applied to the system, and it is able to produce high density deposited materials without shrinkage. These materials are a true model of the template structure and, due to the high surface areas obtained, are very promising for use in electrochemical applications. In the present work, the assembly of monodisperse polystyrene templates was conduced over gold, platinum and glassy carbon substrates in order to show the electrodeposition of an oxide, a conducting polymer and a hybrid inorganic-organic material with applications in the supercapacitor and sensor fields. The performances of the resulting nanostructured films have been compared with the analogue bulk material and the results achieved are depicted in this paper.

Aeromonads are inhabitants of aquatic ecosystems and are described as being involved in intestinal disturbances and other infections. A total of 200 drinking water samples from domestic and public reservoirs and drinking fountains located in São Paulo (Brazil), were analyzed for the presence of Aeromonas. Samples were concentrated by membrane filtration and enriched in APW. ADA medium was used for Aeromonas isolation and colonies were confirmed by biochemical characterization. Strains isolated were tested for hemolysin and toxin production. Aeromonas was detected in 12 samples (6.0%). Aeromonas strains (96) were isolated and identified as: A. caviae (41.7%), A. hydrophila (15.7%), A.allosacharophila (10.4%), A. schubertii (1.0%) and Aeromonas spp. (31.2%).The results revealed that 70% of A. caviae, 66.7% of A. hydrophila, 80% of A. allosacharophila and 46.6% of Aeromonas spp. were hemolytic. The assay for checking production of toxins showed that 17.5% of A. caviae, 73.3% of A. hydrophila, 60% of A. allosacharophila, 100% of A. schubertii, and 33.3% of Aeromonas spp. were able to produce toxins. The results demonstrated the pathogenic potential of Aeromonas, indicating that the presence of this emerging pathogen in water systems is a public health concern
