The compounds trans-[PtBr{C(C10H15)CH2}(PEt3)2](1)(C10H15= adamant-1-yl), trans-[MBr{C(C10H7)CMe2}(PEt3)2][M = Pd (2) or Pt (3); C10H7= naphth-1-yl], and trans-[MBr{C(Ph)CMe2}(PEt3)2][M = Pd (4) or Pt (5)] have been prepared from Grignard [for (2) and (3)] or lithium reagents [for (1), (4), and (5)] and appropriate dichlorobis(phosphine)metal derivatives. Full single-crystal X-ray data are reported for (1) and (3), and reveal unusually long Pt–C(sp2) bonds. Insertion reactions into these M–C bonds occur with MeNC [for (1), (3), and (5)], and with CO [for (1) and (3)]; the latter, the first reported insertion into a Pt–C(sp2) bond, occurs under mild conditions as expected for the abnormally long M–C bonds.

The synthesis, characterization and ethylene polymerization behavior of a set of Tp'MCl3 complexes (4, M = Ti, Tp' HB(3-neopentyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(NP)); 5, M = Ti, Tp'= HB(3-tert-butyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(tBu)); 6, M = Ti, Tp' = HB(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(Ph)); 7, M = Zr, Tp' = HB(3-phenyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(ph)); 8, M = Zr, Tp' = HB(3-tert-butyl-pyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(tBu))) is described. Treatment of these tris(pyrazolyl)borate Group IV compounds with methylalumoxane (MAO) generates active catalysts for ethylene polymerization. For the polymerization reactions performed in toluene at 60 degreesC and 3 atm of ethylene pressure, the activities varied between 1.3 and 5.1 X 10(3) g of PE/mol[M](.)h. The highest activity is reached using more sterically open catalyst precursor 4. The viscosity-average molecular weights ((M-v) over bar) of the PE's produced with these catalyst precursors varying from 3.57 to 20.23 x 10(5) gmol(-1) with melting temperatures in the range of 127-134 degreesC. Further polymerization studies employing 7 varying Al/Zr molar ratio and temperature of polymerization showed that the activity as well as the polymer properties are dependent on these parameters. In that case, higher activity was attained at 60 degreesC. The viscosity-average molecular weights of the polyethylene's decreases with increasing AI/Zr molar ratio. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The reaction of TlTp' (Tp' = HB(3-mesitylpyrazolyl)(3)(-) (Tp(Ms)), HB(3-mesitylpyrazolyl)(2)(5-mesitylpyrazolyl)(-) (Tp(Ms)*)) with NiCl(2).6H(2)O affords Tp(Ms)NiCl (1) and Tp(Ms)*NiCl (2) in good yield. The compound 2 undergoes an isomerization process to form [{Tp(Ms)**}NiCl](2) (3) (Tp(Ms)** = HB(5-mesitylpyrazolyl)(2)(3-mesitylpyrazolyl)(-)) in 68% yield. Treatment of the tris(pyrazolyl)-borate nickel compounds 1 and 2 with alkylaluminum cocatalysts such as methylalumoxane (MAO) and trimethylaluminum (TMA) in toluene generates active catalysts for ethylene oligomerization. The compound 1 shows turnover frequencies in the range of (2.2-43.1) x 10(3) h(-1). Oligomerization reaction conditions can be adjusted that lead to selectivities as high as 81% for butene-1.

The ability of NO to induce biofilm dispersion has been well established. Here we investigated the effect of nitroxides (sterically hindered nitric oxide analogues) on biofilm formation and swarming motility in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A transposon mutant unable to produce nitric oxide endogenously (nirS) was deficient in swarming motility relative to wild type and the complemented strain. Moreover, expression of the nirS gene was up-regulated by 9.65-fold in wild type swarming cells when compared to planktonic cells. Wild type swarming levels were substantially restored upon exogenous addition of nitroxide containing compounds, consistent with the hypothesis that NO is necessary for swarming motility. Here, we showed that nitroxides not only mimicked the dispersal activity of NO, but also prevented biofilms from forming in flow cell chambers. In addition, a nirS transposon mutant was deficient in biofilm formation relative to wild type and the complemented strain, thus implicating NO in the formation of biofilms. Intriguingly despite its stand alone action in inhibiting biofilm formation and promoting dispersal, a nitroxide partially restored the ability of a nirS mutant to form biofilms.

A new ruthenium pincer complex RuHCl(CO)(PNP)] (PNP = PhCH2N(CH2CH2PPh2)(2)) (1) was synthesized and characterized. The reactivity of complex 1 with electrophilic reagents XOTf (X = H, CH3, and Me3Si; OTf = CF3SO3) was studied by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy with an aim to observe and characterize sigma complexes of type Ru(eta(2)-HX)Cl(CO)(PNP)]OTf] (X = H (2), CH3 (3), Me3Si (4)). Reaction of complex 1 with HOTf resulted in the formation of the dihydrogen complex, Ru(eta(2)-H-2)Cl(CO)(PNP)OTf] (2). On the other hand, the reaction between complex 1 and MeOTf and Me3SiOTf resulted in the direct elimination of MeCl and Me3SiCl via a S(N)2 type of reaction without the intermediacy of the respective sigma complexes 3 and 4. This contrasting reactivity behaviour has been rationalized taking into consideration the approach of the relatively bulky electrophites CH3+ and Me3Si+ onto the hydride moiety of the ruthenium fragment, which is sterically hindered.

Friedel-Crafts arylation of a-hydroxy ketones such as 2-hydroxy- 1,2,2-triarylethanones has been achieved with a variety of arenes and heteroarenes in the presence of Lewis or Bronsted acids. Both sterically hindered and unhindered 1,2,2,2-tetrarylethanones are formed in good to excellent yields by using a stoichiometric amount of triflic acid. The intermediacy of an a-keto carbenium ion has been proposed.

The reactivity of permethylzirconocene and permethylhafnocene complexes with various nucleophiles has been investigated. Permethylzirconocene reacts with sterically hindered ketenes and allenes to afford metallacycle products. Reaction of these cummulenes with permethylzirconocene hydride complexes affords enolate and σ-allyl species, respectively. Reactions which afford enolate products are nonstereospecific, whereas reactions which afford allyl products initially give a cis-σ-allyl complex which rearranges to its trans isomer. The mechanism of these reactions is proposed to occur either by a Lewis Acid-Lewis Base interaction (ketenes) or by formation of a π-olefin intermediate (allenes).
Permethylzirconocene haloacyl complexes react with strong bases such as lithium diisopropylamide or methylene trimethylphosphorane to afford ketene compounds. Depending on the size of the alkyl ketene substituent, the hydrogenation of these compounds affords enolate-hydride products with varying degrees of stereoselectivity. The larger the substituent, the greater is the selectivity for cis hydrogenation products.
The reaction of permethylzirconocene dihydride and permethylhafnocene dihydride with methylene trimethylphosphorane affords methyl-hydride and dimethyl derivatives. Under appropriate conditions, the metallated-ylide complex 1, (η^5-C_5(CH_3)_5)_2 Zr(H)CH_2PMe_2CH_2, is also obtained and has been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction techniques. Reaction of 1 with CO affords (η^5-C_5(CH_3)_5)_2 Zr(C,O-η^2 -(PMe_3)HC=CO)H which exists in solution as an equilibrium mixture of isomers. In one isomer (2), the η^2-acyl oxygen atom occupies a lateral equatorial coordination position about zirconium, whereas in the other isomer (3), the η-acyl oxygen atom occupies the central equatorial position. The equilibrium kinetics of the 2→3 isomerization have been studied and the structures of both complexes confirmed by X-ray diffraction methods. These studies suggest a mechanism for CO insertion into metal-carbon bonds of the early transition metals.
Permethylhafnocene dihydride and permethylzirconocene hydride complexes react with diazoalkanes to afford η^2-N, N' -hydrazonido species in which the terminal nitrogen atom of the diazoalkane molecule has inserted into a metal-hydride or metal-carbon bond. The structure of one of these compounds, Cp*_2Zr(NMeNCTol_2)OH, has been determined by X-ray diffraction techniques. Under appropriate conditions, the hydrazonido-hydride complexes react with a second equivalent of diazoalkene to afford η' -N-hydrazonido-η^2-N, N' -hydrazonido species.

Two mononuclear neutral copper(I) complexes, Cu(L-1)PPh3 (1), Cu(L-2)(PPh3)(2) (2) ([L-1](-) = [{N((C6H3Pr2)-Pr-i-2,6)C(H)}(2)CPh](-); [L-2](-) = [{N(C6H5)C(H)}(2)CPh](-)) have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. In complex 1, the copper(I) atom is in a distorted three-coordinate trigonal planar environment, whereas in complex 2 with the less sterically hindered beta-dialdiminato ligand, the copper(I) atom is the centre of a four-coordinate distorted tetrahedron. At room temperature complexes 1 and 2 in a film of PMMA exhibit green emission at 543 and 549 nm with lifetimes of 5.28 and 5.32 ns, respectively.

Ionic liquids have been used to support a range of magnesium-and copper-based bis(oxazoline) complexes for the enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction between N-acryloyloxazolidinone and cyclopentadiene. Compared with reaction performed in dichloromethane or diethyl ether, an enhancement in ee is observed with a large increase in reaction rate. In addition, for non-sterically hindered bis(oxazoline) ligands, that is, phenyl functionalised ligands, a reversal in configuration is found in the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide], compared with molecular solvents. Supported ionic liquid phase catalysts have also been developed using surface-modified silica which show good reactivity and enantioselectivity for the case of the magnesium-based bis(oxazoline) complexes. Poor ees and conversion were observed for the analogous copper-based systems. Some drop in ee was found on supporting the catalyst due a drop in the rate of reaction and, therefore, an increase in the contribution from the uncatalysed a chiral reaction.
