Thermogravimetry (TG) energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mapping surface, X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy and atomic spectroscopy with cold vapor generation have been used to study the reaction of mercury with platinum-rhodium (Pt-Rh) alloy. The results suggest that, the electrodeposited Hg film reacts with Pt-Rh to form intermetallic compounds of different stability, when heated indicated by at least four weight loss steps. Intermetallic compounds as PtHg4 and PtHg2 was characterized by XRD. These intermetallic compound are the main product presents on the surface of the samples after remotion of the bulk mercury via thermal desorption techniques. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. This work investigates the effects of carbon-supported Pt, Pt-Ru, Pt-Rh and Pt-Ru-Rh alloy electrocatalysts oil the yields of CO2 and acetic acid as electro-oxidation products of ethanol. Electronic and structural features of these metal alloys were studied by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The electrochemical activity was investigated by polarization experiments and the reaction intermediates and products were analyzed by in situ Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR). Electrochemical stripping of CO. which is one of the adsorbed intermediates, presented a faster oxidation kinetics on the Pt-Ru electrocatalyst, and similar rates of reaction on Pt-Rh and Pt. The electrochemical current of ethanol oxidation showed a higher value and the onset potential was less positive oil Pt-Ru. However, in situ FTIR spectra evidenced that the CO2/acetic acid ratio is higher for the materials with Rh, mainly at lower potentials. These results indicate that the Ru atoms act mainly by providing oxygenated species for the oxidation of ethanol intermediates, and point out ail important role of Rh on the C-C bond dissociation. This work presents results of studies of carbon-dispersed Pt-Rh (1:1) nanoparticles as electrocatalysts for the ethanol electro-oxidation. The influences of the crystallite size and the cell temperature on the yields of CO2, acetaldehyde and acetic acid are investigated. Metal nanoparticles were prepared by two different routes: (1) impregnation on carbon powder followed by thermal reduction on hydrogen atmosphere and (2) chemical reduction of the precursor salts. The surface active area and the electrochemical activity of the electrocatalysts were estimated by CO stripping and cyclic voltammetry in the absence and in the presence of ethanol, respectively. Reaction intermediates and products were analyzed by in situ Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS). The electrochemical stripping of CO and the electrochemical ethanol oxidation were slightly faster on the Pt-Rh electrocatalysts compared to Pt/C. Also, in situ FTIR spectra and DEMS measurements evidenced that the CO2/acetaldehyde and the CO2/acetic acid ratios are higher for the Pt-Rh/C materials in relation to Pt/C. This was ascribed to the activation of the C-C bond breaking by Rh, this being more prominent for the materials with smaller crystallite sizes. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Pt monolayers deposited on carbon- supported Ru and Rh nanoparticles were investigated as electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation. Electronic features of the Pt monolayers were studied by in situ XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure). The electrochemical activity was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and cronoamperometric experiments. Spectroscopic and electrochemical results were compared to those obtained on carbon-supported Pt-Ru and Pt-Rh alloys, and Pt E-TEK. XAS results indicate a modification of the Pt 5d band due to geometric and electronic interactions with the Ru ant Rh substrates, but the effect of withdrawing electrons from Pt is less pronounced in relation to that for the corresponding alloys. Electrochemical stripping of adsorbed CO, which is one of the intermediates, and the currents for the oxidation of ethanol show faster kinetics on the Pt monolayer deposited on Ru nanoparticles, and an activity that exceeds that of conventional catalysts with much larger amounts of platinum. Severe spinal deformity in young children is a formidable challenge for optimal treatment. Standard interventions for adolescents, such as spinal deformity correction and fusion, may not be appropriate for young patients with considerable growth remaining. Alternative surgical options that provide deformity correction and protect the growth remaining in the spine are needed to treat this group of patients 1, 2. One such method is the use of shape memory alloy staples. We report our experience to date using video-assisted thoracoscopic insertion of shape memory alloy staples. A retrospective review was conducted of 13 patients with scoliosis, aged 7 to 13 years, who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic insertion of shape memory staples. In our experience, video-assisted thoracoscopic insertion of shape memory alloy staples is a safe procedure with no complications noted. It is a reliable method of providing curve stability, however the follow up results to date indicate that the effectiveness of the procedure is greater in younger patients.

This paper presents bonding technology of aluminum alloy by hot-dipping tin. The dissolution curve of copper in molten tin liquid was obtained in the experiment of hot-dipping Sn. Optimal hot-dipping parameter which was suitable for soldering was designed. To elucidate characteristics of interfacial evolution, the microstructure of the coatings, soldered joint were analyzed using optical microscopy, SEM and EDX. The shear strength of soldered joints was tested as high as 39.9Mpa, which is high enough to achieve the requirement of electronic industry.

This study investigated the grain size dependence of mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of microcrystalline (mc) and nanocrystalline (nc: grain size below 100 nm) Mg-5wt% Al alloys. The Hall-Petch relationship was investigated by both instrumented indentation tests and compression tests. The test results from the indentation tests and compression tests match well with each other. The breakdown of Hall-Petch relationship and the elevated strain rate sensitivity (SRS) of present Mg-5wt% Al alloys when the grain size was reduced below 58nm indicated the more significant role of GB mediated mechanisms in plastic deformation process. However, the relatively smaller SRS values compared to GB sliding and coble creep process suggested the plastic deformation in the current study is still dislocation mediated mechanism dominant.

For a series of six-coordinate Ru(II)(CO)L or Rh(III)(X–)L porphyrins which are facially differentiated by having a naphthoquinol- or hydroquinol-containing strap across one face, we show that ligand migration from one face to the other can occur under mild conditions, and that ligand site preference is dependent on the nature of L and X–. For bulky nitrogen-based ligands, the strap can be displaced sideways to accommodate the ligand on the same side as the strap. For the ligand pyrazine, we show 1 H NMR evidence for monodentate and bidentate binding modes on both faces, dependent on ligand concentration and metalloporphyrin structure, and that inter-facial migration is rapid under normal conditions. For monodentate substituted pyridine ligands there is a site dependence on structure, and we show clear evidence of dynamic ligand migration through a series of ligand exchange reactions.

Conventional catalyzed thermal CVD of carbon microcoils commonly suffers from poor control of the coil shape and morphology and rarely reaches the nanoscale size range. This article reports on an unconventional Ni-P alloy-catalyzed, high-throughput, highly reproducible CVD of ultra-long carbon coil-like micro- and nano-structures using acetylene precursor at relatively low process temperatures. Helical carbon microcoils with consistently uniform, circular cross-sections and a high degree of crystallinity have been synthesized at 750 °C. A further reduction of the temperature to 650 °C led to the growth of ultra-long (up to several mm) wave-like carbon nanofibers made of two nanowires with the diameters in the 100-200 nm range. The results of the XRD and Raman analysis reveal that the nanofibers feature only a slightly more disordered structure compared to the microcoils. Our results suggest that morphology and structure of the carbon coil-like micro- and nano-structures can be tailored by the appropriate alloying of the catalyst and the choice of the CVD process parameters.

A paradigm shift has taken place in which bone implant materials has gone from being relatively inert to having immunomodulatory properties, indicating the importance of immune response when these materials interact with the host tissues. It has therefore become important to endow the implant materials with immunomodulatory properties favouring osteogenesis and osseointegration. Strontium, zinc and silicon are bioactive elements that have important roles in bone metabolism and that also elicit significant immune responses. In this study, Sr-, Zn- and Si-containing bioactive Sr2ZnSi2O7 (SZS) ceramic coatings on Ti–6Al–4V were successfully prepared by a plasma-spray coating method. The SZS coatings exhibited slow release of the bioactive ions with significantly higher bonding strength than hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings. SZS-coated Ti–6Al–4V elicited significant effects on the immune cells, inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and fibrosis-enhancing factors, while upregulating the expression of osteogenic factors of macrophages; moreover, it could also inhibit the osteoclastic activities. The RANKL/RANK pathway, which enhances osteoclastogenesis, was inhibited by the SZS coatings, whereas the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs) was significantly enhanced by the SZS coatings/macrophages conditioned medium, probably via the activation of BMP2 pathway. SZS coatings are, therefore, a promising material for orthopaedic applications, and the strategy of manipulating the immune response by a combination of bioactive elements with controlled release has the potential to endow biomaterials with beneficial immunomodulatory properties.

Forty-six archaeological specimens were treated by fire-assay and subsequently analysed by ICP-MS for selected precious metals: Ph, Pt and Au. The investigation was prompted by the possibility that archaeological samples could serve as "indicators" of the precious metal composition of the clays from the excavated sites. Therefore, the experimentally obtained concentrations were carefully studied to determine if there were anomalous levels of these precious metals in the deposits from which the specimens originated. Furthermore, the analytical data were used to establish if it was feasible to distinguish ancient potsherds based on precious metal concentrations, for employment as a basis in provenance studies.

Palladium (Pd)-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are among the most important methods in organic synthesis. We report the discovery of highly efficient and green photocatalytic processes by which cross-coupling reactions, including Sonogashira, Stille, Hiyama, Ullmann, and Buchwald–Hartwig reactions, can be driven with visible light at temperatures slightly above room temperature using alloy nanoparticles of gold and Pd on zirconium oxide, thus achieving high yields. The alloy nanoparticles absorb visible light, and their conduction electrons gain energy, which is available at the surface Pd sites. Results of the density functional theory calculations indicate that transfer of the light excited electrons from the nanoparticle surface to the reactant molecules adsorbed on the nanoparticle surface activates the reactants. When the light intensity was increased, a higher reaction rate was observed, because of the increased population of photoexcited electrons. The irradiation wavelength also has an important impact on the reaction rates. Ultraviolet irradiation can drive some reactions with the chlorobenzene substrate, while visible light irradiation failed to, and substantially improve the yields of the reactions with the bromobenzene substrate. The discovery reveals the possibility of using low-energy and -density sources such as sunlight to drive chemical transformations.
