Hydroalumination of thioacetylenes using DIBAL-H and lithium di-(isobutyl)-n-(butyl)-aluminate hydride (Zweifel's reagent), followed by addition of water, furnished exclusively the (Z)- and (E)-vinyl sulfides, respectively. The regio- and stereochemistry of the intermediates generated, (Z)- and (E)-phenylthio vinyl alanates, were determined by capture with iodine, which afforded the corresponding (E)- and (Z)-1-iodo-1-phenylthio-2-organoyl ethenes. Reactions of the (E)-iodo(thio)ketene acetals with n-BuLi followed by addition of hexanal afforded the (Z)-phenylthio allylic alcohol, while the (Z)-iodo(thio)ketene acetals under similar reactions conditions gave the (E)-phenylthio allylic alcohol exclusively.

Surfactant templating offers a simple route to synthesize high-surface area silicas with ordered, tunable mesopore architectures. The use of these materials as versatile catalyst supports for palladium nanoparticles has been explored in the aerobic selective oxidation (selox) of allylic alcohols under mild conditions. Families of Pd/mesoporous silicas, synthesized through incipient wetness impregnation of SBA-15, SBA-16, and KIT-6, have been characterized by using nitrogen porosimetry, CO chemisorption, diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and high-resolution TEM and benchmarked in liquid phase allylic alcohol selox against a Pd/amorphous SiO2 standard. The transition from amorphous to two-dimensional parallel and three-dimensional interpenetrating porous silica networks conferred significant selox rate enhancements associated with higher surface densities of active palladium oxide sites. Dissolved oxygen was essential for insitu stabilization of palladium oxide, and thus maintenance of high activity on-stream, whereas selectivity to the desired aldehyde selox product over competing hydrogenolysis pathways was directed by using palladium metal. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Highly ordered mesoporous alumina was prepared via evaporation induced self assembly and was impregnated to afford a family of Pd/meso-Al2O3 catalysts for the aerobic selective oxidation (selox) of allylic alcohols under mild reaction conditions. CO chemisorption and XPS identify the presence of highly dispersed (0.9–2 nm) nanoparticles comprising heavily oxidised PdO surfaces, evidencing a strong palladium-alumina interaction. Surface PdO is confirmed as the catalytically active phase responsible for allylic alcohol selox, with initial rates for Pd/meso-Al2O3 far exceeding those achievable for palladium over either amorphous alumina or mesoporous silica supports. Pd/meso-Al2O3 is exceptionally active for the atom efficient selox of diverse allylic alcohols, with activity inversely proportional to alcohol mass.

The selective conversion of alcohols to their carbonyl derivatives is a critical step towards a sustainable chemical industry. Heterogeneous Pd catalysts represent some of the most active systems known, even so further studies into the active species and role of support are required. Through controlling support mesostructure, using non-interconnected SBA-15 and interlinked SBA-16 and KIT-6, we have evaluated the role of pore architecture on supported Pd nanoparticles and their subsequent activity for liquid phase aerobic allylic alcohol selective oxidation.[1,2] These synthesised silica supports exhibit high surface areas (>800 m2g-1), and similar mesopore diameters (3.5 to 5 nm), but differ in their pore connectivity and arrangement; p6mm (SBA-15), I3mm (SBA-16) and I3ad (KIT-6). When evaluated alongside commercial non-mesoporous silica (200 m2 g-1) they promote enhanced Pd dispersion with interpenetrating assemblies providing further elevation. Macropore introduction into SBA-15, producing a hierarchical macro-mesoporous silica (MM-SBA-15), allows control over mesopore length and accessibility which escalates Pd distribution to levels akin to KIT-6 and SBA-16. Controlling dispersion, and likewise nanoparticle size, is thus facilitated through the choice of support and additionally Pd loading, with cluster sizes spanning 3.2 to 0.8 nm. X-ray spectroscopies indicate nanoparticles are PdO terminated with the oxide content a function of dispersion. Kinetic studies allude to surface PdO being the active site responsible, with a constant TOF observed, independent of loading and support. This confirms activity is governed by PdO density, whilst also overruling internal mass diffusion constraints. MM-SBA-15 facilitates superior activity and TOFs for long chain acyclic terpene alcohols due to reduced internal mass transport constraints.

The utility of a hierarchically ordered nanoporous SBA-15 architecture, comprising 270 nm macropores and 5 nm mesopores (MM-SBA-15), for the catalytic aerobic selective oxidation of sterically challenging allylic alcohols is shown. Detailed bulk and surface characterization reveals that incorporation of complementary macropores into mesoporous SBA-15 enhances the dispersion of sub 2 nm Pd nanoparticles and thus their degree of surface oxidation. Kinetic profiling reveals a relationship between nanoparticle dispersion and oxidation rate, identifying surface PdO as the catalytically active phase. Hierarchical nanoporous Pd/MM-SBA-15 outperforms mesoporous analogues in allylic alcohol selective oxidation by (i) stabilizing PdO nanoparticles and (ii) dramatically improving in-pore diffusion and access to active sites by sesquiterpenoid substrates such as farnesol and phytol. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The Synthesis of three typical polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAH) has been described, wherein the Vilsmeier reaction plays a major role. Vilsmeier reaction of the tetraloll gives the dihydronaphthaldehyde 2 which on cyclodehydration gives the dihydroarene 3. Ita dehydrogenation affords 3-methoxybenz[a]anthracene (4). Vilsmeier reaction on the dimethoxydihydronaphthalene 5 gives the versatile dimethoxydihydronaphthaldehyde 6 which has been converted to the dimethoxybenzo[c]fluorene 7 by direct cyclodehydration and the fulvene 10 by cyclodehydration of allylic alcohol 8 derived from 6 followed by dehydrogenation. The saturated alcohol 12 corresponding to 8 undergoes cyclodehydration to give the dimethoxyhexahydrobenzo[c]phenanthrene (13). Some of the advantages of the Vilsmeier approach to PAH have been pointed out.

A new family of surf ace-modified carbohydrates with locked, axial-rich conformations and bipolarofacial architectures has been developed with the aid of carbocyclic ring annulation. These novel trans-decalin-based carbohydrates have been synthesized, from simple aromatic precursors such as tetralin, through the ozonolysis of an appropriately protected allylic alcohol, followed by a cascade of intramolecular acetalizations to generate the sugar pyran moiety. The stereoselective synthesis of (racemic) cyclohexane-annulated 0-glucopyranoside and a-glucofuranoside from a common annulated trans-cyclohexadiene diol (trans-CHD) precursor under-scores the versatility of our approach. The efficacy of the annulation stratagem in generating carbohydrate diversity has been demonstrated through the synthesis of two regioisomeric annulated gulose derivatives, which differ only in the site of ring annulation on the sugar moiety. The mapping of the MLP surface and solid-state architecture of the new sugar shows that cycloalkane annulation results in surface modification and fine-tuning of sugar hydrophilicity. The enantiodivergent formal syntheses of both enantiomers of aspercyclide C is accomplished. Starting from L-(+)-tartaric acid, the key protected allylic alcohol, (3R,4R)-4-(methoxy-methoxy) non-1-en-3-ol is prepared, and is then elaborated into both enantiomers of 3-(4-methoxybenzyl)oxy]non-1-en-4-ol via Mitsunobu inversion. Esterification with a known biaryl acid, followed by ring-closing metathesis and deprotection completes the syntheses.

A concise synthetic route to the tunicamycin antibiotics is described, illustrated by the preparation of (+)-tunicamycin-V (1-V). Key features of the synthesis include: (1) the development and application of a silicon-mediated reductive coupling of aldehydes and allylic alcohols to construct the undecose core of the natural product; and (2) the development of an efficient procedure for the synthesis of the trehalose glycosidic bond within the antibiotic. These innovations allow for the coupling of a uridine-derived aldehyde fragment with a preformed trehalose-linked disaccharide allylic alcohol to form the carbohydrate core (1) of the natural product in a highly convergent manner. The resultant amino polyol is a versatile intermediate for the synthesis of any of the homologous tunicamycin antibiotics.

In this work, biodiesel was produced from castor oil that was a byproduct glycerin. The molar ratio between oil and alcohol, as well as the use of (KOH) catalyst to provide the chemical reaction is based on literature. The best results were obtained using 1 mol of castor oil (260g) to 3 moles of methyl alcohol (138g), using 1.0% KOH as catalyst at a temperature of 260 ° C and shaken at 120 rpm. The oil used was commercially available, the process involves the reaction of transesterification of a vegetable oil with methyl alcohol. The product of this reaction is an ester, biodiesel being the main product and the glycerin by-product which has undergone treatment for use as raw material for the production of allyl alcohol. The great advantage of the use of glycerin to obtain allyl alcohol is that its use eliminates the large amount of waste of the biodiesel and various forms of insult to the environment. The reactions for the formation of allyl alcohol was conducted from formic acid and glycerin in a ratio 1/1, at a temperature of 260oC in a heater blanket, being sprayed by a spiral condenser for a period of 2 hours and the product obtained contains mostly the allylic alcohol .. The monitoring of reactions was performed by UV-Visible Spectrophotometer: FTIR Fourier transform, the analysis showed that these changes occur spectrometer indicating the formation of the product allylic alcohol (prop-2-en-1-ol) in the presence of water, This alcohol was appointed Alcohol GL. The absorption bands confirms that the reaction was observed in (υ C = C) 1470 -1600 cm -1 and (υ CO), 3610-3670 attributed to C = C groups and OH respectively. The thermal analysis was carried out in a thermogravimetric analyzer SDT Q600, where the mass and temperature are displayed against time, that allows checking the approximate rate of heating. The innovative methodology developed in the laboratory (LABTAM, UFRN), was able to treat the glycerine produced by transesterification of castor oil and used as raw material for production of allyl alcohol, with a yield of 80%, of alcohol, the same is of great importance in the manufacture of polymers, pharmaceuticals, organic compounds, herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals

In this PhD-thesis, two methodologies for enantioselective intramolecular ring closing reaction on indole cores are presented. The first methodology represents a highly stereoselective alkylation of the indole N1-nitrogen, leading to 3,4-dihydro-pyrazinoindol-1-ones – a structural class which is known for its activity on the CNS and therefore of high pharmacological interest concerning related diseases. In this approach, N-benzyl cinchona-alkaloids were used for the efficient catalysis of intramolecular aza-Michael reactions. Furthermore, computational studies in collaboration with the research group Prof. Andrea Bottoni (Department of Chemistry “G. Ciamician”, Bologna) were accomplished in order to get insight into the key interactions between catalyst and substrate, leading to enantiomeric excesses up to 91%. The results of the calculations on a model system are in accordance with the experimental results and demonstrate the high sensibility of the system towards structural modifications. The second project deals with a metal catalyzed, intramolecular Friedel-Crafts (FC)-reaction on indolyl substrates, carrying a side chain which on its behalf is furnished with an allylic alcohol unit. Allylic alcohols are part of the structural class of “π-activated alcohols” – alcohols, which are more easily activated due to the proximity to a π-unit (allyl-, propargyl-, benzyl-). The enantioselective intramolecular cyclization event is catalyzed efficiently by employment of a chiral Au(I)-catalyst, leading to 1-vinyl- or 4-vinyl-tetrahydrocarbazoles (THCs) under the formation of water as byproduct. This striking and novel process concerning the direct activation of alcohols in catalytic FC-reactions was subsequently extended to similar precursors, leading to functionalized tetrahydro-β-carbolines. These two methodologies represent highly efficient approaches towards the synthesis of scaffolds, which are of enormous pharmaceutical interest and amplify the spectra of enantioselective catalytic functionalisations of indoles.

The transition metal-catalyzed allylic alkylation (Tsuji-Trost type reaction) is a powerful tool for C-C, C-N, and C-O bond formation, which has been widely applied to organic chemistry over the last decades. Typical substrates for this transformation are activated allylic compounds such as halides, esters, carbonates, carbamates, phosphates, and so on. However, use of these substrates is associated with the disadvantage of generating a stoichiometric amount of chemical waste. Furthermore, these starting materials have to be prepared in an extra step from the corresponding allylic alcohol. Thus, ideal substrates would be the allylic alcohols themselves, with water being the only byproduct in this case. However, the scarse propensity of the hydroxyl moiety to act as good leaving group has significantly limited their use so far. During the last decade significant efforts have been made in order to develop more atom-economical and environmentally-friendly allylic alkylation protocols by employing allylic alcohols directly. In this PhD dissertation two main projects addressing this topic are presented. “Project 1” deals with the development of new metal-catalyzed intramolecular Friedel-Crafts (FC) allylic alkylations of electron-rich (PAPER A), as well as challenging electron-poor arenes (PAPER B) with alcohols. In “Project 2”, gold(I)-catalyzed intramolecular and stereoselective allylic alkylation reactions are reported. In particular, a FC alkylation of indole-containing allylic alcohols is presented in PAPER C. While, an O-alkylation of aminol-containing allylic alcohols is reported in PAPER D. To the best of knowledge, these reports represent the first example of gold(I)-catalyzed stereoselective alkylations with alcohols.
