In this paper, the adsorption equilibrium and kinetic behaviors of pentachlorophenol (PCP) on suspended particulate matter (SPM) in Donghu Lake water were investigated. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms and their constants were evaluated. The results indicated that the adsorption of PCP on Donghu Lake SPM followed the Freundlich isotherm. Furthermore, the first order Lagergren rate equation and the pseudo-second order rate equation were used to describe the kinetic behaviors of PCP adsorption on Donghu Lake SPM, the rate constants were determined, and the kinetic process of the adsorption of PCP on Donghu Lake SPM followed the second order kinetic model.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a toxic chemical, often used in the formulation of pesticide, herbicide, anti fungal agent, bactericide and wood preservative. This study is aimed at evaluating the potential of membrane bioreactor (MBR) to treat PCP contaminated wastewater. Synthetic wastewater with COD of 600 mg/L was fed into the MBR at varied PCP loading rate of 12–40 mg/m3/d. A PCP removal rate of 99% and a COD removal rate of 95% were achieved at a hydraulic retention time of 12 hs and a mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration of 10,000 mg/L. When sodium pentachlorophenol (NaPCP), which has higher solubility in water, was used in the second phase of the study, at loading rates varying from 20 to 200 mg/m3·d, the removal rate of NaPCP was higher than 99% and the removal rate of COD was more than 96%. It was also found that at higher biomass concentrations, biosorption played an important role besides the biodegradation process. Batch experiments conducted in this study revealed that the sorption capacity to be 0.63 (mg PCP/g biomass) and occurred rapidly within 60 min. This phenomenon could enhance the PCP degradation through increased contact between microorganism and PCP. Further, the membrane resistance was low (trans-membrane pressure of 14 kPa) even after more than 100 ds of operation. In addition, the toxic level of PCP in the influent could have induced the microorganisms to secrete more extra-cellular polymeric substances (EPS) for their protection, which in turn must have increased the viscosity of the mixed liquor.

The efficiency of methods for the determination of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) in soil samples was evaluated. An on-line method was applied for HCB determination. Soil samples were transferred to chromatographic columns prepacked with alumina. The HCB elution was processed with n-hexane. The PCP was extracted from soil samples with n-hexane-acetone in an ultrasonic bath. After re-extraction with K2CO3 solution PCP was acetylated with acetic anhydride. The pentachlorophenyl acetate derivative was then extracted with n-hexane. The HCB and PCP derivative were analyzed by gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD). Mean recoveries obtained from soil samples fortified at levels of 0.5; 4 and 20 ng g(-1) ranged from 91 to 100% for HCB, and for PCP, at levels of 10; 40 and 200 ng g(-1), ranged from 88 to 101%. These results demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed methods. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Organochlorine compounds were dumped by chemical industries during the 1970s in many areas of the coastal plain of São Paulo state in Brazil. These dumps, located on hillsides and in valleys, in both rural and urban environments, are responsible for soil and water pollution. The objective of this work was to determine how the pollutants have spread in an area occupied by a spodosol-type soil mantle. The study combines soil morphological observations with soil and water analysis of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) in soil toposequences. The results indicate that the highest pollutant concentrations are observed near the dump site and that the compounds contamination is increasing. A map integrating topography and chemical concentrations was created to visualize the spatial distribution of HCB levels in the landscape. Physical and chemical analyses were performed to measure HCB and PCP levels in the soil. Soil water appears to act as a vector of HCB, probably through complexation with and dispersal of dissolved organic matter. The persistence of HCB at the studied site is most likely due to the low pH values in combination with a high content of organic matter. HCB was consistently found in higher concentrations than PCP. It is plausible that the cause of this difference is that PCP is degraded more easily under sunlight than HCB and that degradation of PCP under acid conditions leads to the formation of HCB. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Surface sediments and bivalves were collected from the Changjiang Estuary in December 2003 and November 2004, respectively. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in these samples were measured with high-resolution chromatography (HRGC)/High Resolution Mass Spectrometer (HRMS). The concentrations of total PCDD/Fs and toxic equivalent (TEQ) were 169.83 +/- 119.63 and 0.81 +/- 0.36 pg/g dry weight (dw) in sediments, and 580.33 +/- 240.17 and 7.24 +/- 3.65 pg/g dw in bivalves. The homolog compositions of PCDD/Fs were similar among samples, the most abundant congener was octa-chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) and then octa-chlorinated dibenzofuran (OCDF) and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-hepta-chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (HOCDD). The herbicide pentachlorophenol (PCP) and sodium pentachlorophenol (Na-PCP) were proved the main source of PCDD/Fs in this area.

Humic acids (HAs), naturally occurring biomacromolecules, were incorporated into nanostructured polymeric films using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique, in which HA layers were alternated with layers of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed very smooth films, with mean roughness varying from 0.89 to 1.19 nm for films containing 5 and 15 PAH/HA bilayers, respectively. The films displayed electroactivity, with the presence of only one reduction peak at ca. 0.675 V (vs Ag/AgCl). Such a well-defined electroactivity allowed the films to be used as highly sensitive pesticide sensors, with detection of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in solutions at concentrations as low as 10(-9) mol L(-1).

The role of the cytochrome (CYT) P-450 mixed-function oxidase (MFO) in the biotransformation of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was investigated, since in vivo interaction between this enzyme and chemical is very probable. HCB is a type I substrate with (Fe('3+)) CYT P-450 isozymes present in untreated, b-naphthoflavone (BNF) and phenobarbital (PB) induced rat liver microsomes. HCB dependent and saturable type I binding titrations yield spectral dissociation constants (K(,s)) of 180 and 83 uM for the isozymes present in untreated and PB induced microsomes, respectively. Purified CYT P-450b, the major isozyme induced by PB, produces HCB dependent and saturable type I spectra with a K(,s) of 0.38 uM.^ CYT P-450 mediated reductive dehalogenation occurs in microsomes and purified/reconstituted MFO systems and produces pentachlorobenzene (PCB) as the initial and major metabolite under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In microsomal reactions secondary metabolism of PCB occurs in the presence of oxygen. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is produced only in aerobic reactions with PB induced microsomes with a concomitant decrease in PCB production. PCP is not detected in aerobic reactions with BNF induced microsomes, although PCB production is decreased compared to anaerobic conditions. A reaction scheme for the production of phenolic metabolities from PCB is deduced.^ CYT P-450 dependent and NADPH independent modes of PCB production occur with purified/reconstituted MFO systems and are consistent with dehalogenation pathways observed with microsomal experiments. The NADPH independent production of PCB requires native microsomal or purified MFO protein components and may be the result of nucleophilic displacement of a chlorine atom from HCB mediated or coupled with redox active functions (primary, secondary, tertiary and quarternary structures) of the proteins. CYT P-450 dependent production of PCB from HCB is isozyme dependent: CYT P-450c = CYT P-450d > CYT P-450a > CYT 450b. The low apparent specific activity may be due to non-optimal reconstitution conditions (e.g., isozyme choice and requirement of other microsomal elecron transport components) and secondary metabolism of PCB and the phenols derived from PCB. CYT P-450 mediated dehalogenation may be catalyzed through attack, by the iron oxene (postulated intermediate of CYT P-450 monooxygenations), at the chlorines of HCB instead of the aromatic nucleus. We report on the comparative bioaccumulation, biotransformation and/or biomagnification from East Greenland ringed seal (Pusa hispida) blubber to polar bear (Ursus maritimus) tissues (adipose, liver and brain) of various classes and congeners of persistent chlorinated and brominated contaminants and metabolic by-products: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chlordanes (CHLs), hydroxyl (OH-) and methylsulfonyl (MeSO2-) PCBs, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), OH-PBBs, polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) flame retardants and OH- and methoxyl (MeO-) PBDEs, 2,2-dichloro-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethene (p,p'-DDE), 3-MeSO2-p,p'-DDE, pentachlorophenol (PCP) and 4-OH-heptachlorostyrene (4-OH-HpCS). We detected all of the investigated contaminants in ringed seal blubber with high frequency, the main diet of East Greenland bears, with the exception of OH-PCBs and 4-OH-HpCS, which indicated that these phenolic contaminants were likely of metabolic origin and formed in the bears from accumulated PCBs and octachlorostyrene (OCS), respectively, rather than being bioaccumulated from a seal blubber diet. For all of the detectable sum of classes or individual organohalogens, in general, the ringed seal to polar bear mean BMFs for SumPCBs, p,p'-DDE, SumCHLs, SumMeSO2-PCBs, 3-MeSO2-p,p'-DDE, PCP, SumPBDEs, total-(alpha)-HBCD, SumOH-PBDEs, SumMeO-PBDEs and SumOH-PBBs indicated that these organohalogens bioaccumulate, and in some cases there was tissue-specific biomagnification, e.g., BMFs for bear adipose and liver ranged from 2 to 570. The blood-brain barrier appeared to be effective in minimizing brain accumulation as BMFs were <= 1 in the brain, with the exception of SumOH-PBBs (mean BMF = 93±54). Unlike OH-PCB metabolites, OH-PBDEs in the bear tissues appeared to be mainly accumulated from the seal blubber rather than being metabolic formed from PBDEs in the bears. In vitro PBDE depletion assays using polar bear hepatic microsomes, wherein the rate of oxidative metabolism of PBDE congeners was very slow, supported the probability that accumulation from seals is the main source of OH-PBDEs in the bear tissues. Our findings demonstrated from ringed seal to polar bears that organohalogen biotransformation, bioaccumulation and/or biomagnification varied widely and depended on the contaminant in question. Our results show the increasing complexity of bioaccumulated and in some cases biomagnified, chlorinated and brominated contaminants and/or metabolites from the diet may be a contributing stress factor in the health of East Greenland polar bears.

The ability of a previously PCB-enriched microbial culture from Venice Lagoon marine sediments to dechlorinate pentachlorophenol (PCP) and 2,3,5-trichlorophenol (2,3,5-TCP) was confirmed under anaerobic conditions in microcosms consisting of site water and sediment. Dechlorination activities against Aroclor 1254 PCB mixture were also confirmed as control. Pentachlorophenol was degraded to 2,4,6-TCP (75.92±0.85 mol%), 3,5-DCP (6.40±0.75 mol%), and phenol (15.40±0.87 mol%). From the distribution of the different dechlorination products accumulated in the PCP-spiked cultures over time, two dechlorination pathways for PCP were proposed: (i) PCP to 2,3,4,6-TeCP, then to 2,4,6-TCP through the removal of both meta double-flanked chlorine substituents (main pathway); (ii) alternately, PCP to 2,3,5,6-TeCP, 2,3,5-TCP, 3,5-DCP, then phenol, through the removal of the para double-flanked chlorine, followed by ortho single-flanked chlorines, and finally meta unflanked chlorines (minor pathway). Removal of meta double-flanked chlorines is thus preferred over all other substituents. 2,3,5-TCP, that completely lacks double-flanked chlorines, was degraded to 3,5-DCP through removal of the ortho single-flanked chlorine, with a 99.6% reduction in initial concentration of 2,3,5-TCP by week 14. 16S rRNA PCR-DGGE using Chloroflexi-specific primers revealed a different role of the two microorganisms VLD-1 and VLD-2, previously identified as dechlorinators in the Aroclor 1254 PCB-enriched community, in the dehalogenation of chlorophenols. VLD-1 was observed both in PCP- and TCP-dechlorinating communities, whereas VLD-2 only in TCP-dechlorinating communities. This indicates that VLD-1 and VLD-2 may both dechlorinate ortho single-flanked chlorines, but only VLD-1 is able to remove double-flanked meta or para chlorines.
