The objective of this study was research the shared knowledge and the means of sharing with the help of social network analysis. The purpose of this study was to give descriptive information to case-organization about its situational network status in different units. The premise of the study is the success of organizational competences and networks, especially when it comes to the sharing of knowledge. The research was accomplished in a TEKES –projects, Developing Network-Based Services – The Role of Competences and Networks COMNET –projects case-organization. Lappeenranta School of Business and the case-organization started the project in co-operation. The baseline for the study was organizational competencies and organizational networks as success factors, especially from the knowledge sharing’s point of view. The research was based on triangulation, which included pre-interviews, network analyses accomplished by Webropol –e-mail survey and qualitative interviews. The results indicated that regular unit meetings were experienced to be the most important method of knowledge sharing along with e-mailing, intranet and weekly bulletins. The co-operation between units was also experienced to be important when evaluating knowledge sharing and communication. The intrafirm network was experienced tight. Dispersed units and partly unclear means of information sharing were the biggest obstacles for information communication. Knowledge sharing, communication with others and trainings were seen important in the case-organization.

The proportion of elderly people in the population has increased rapidly in the last century and consequently "healthy aging" is expected to become a critical area of research in neuroscience. Evidence reveals how healthy aging depends on three main behavioral factors: social lifestyle, cognitive activity and physical activity. In this study, we focused on the role of cognitive activity, concentrating specifically on educational and occupational attainment factors, which were considered two of the main pillars of cognitive reserve. 21 subjects with similar rates of social lifestyle, physical and cognitive activity were selected from a sample of 55 healthy adults. These subjects were divided into two groups according to their level of cognitive reserve; one group comprised subjects with high cognitive reserve (9 members) and the other contained those with low cognitive reserve (12 members). To evaluate the cortical brain connectivity network, all participants were recorded by Magnetoencephalography (MEG) while they performed a memory task (modified version of the Sternberg¿s Task). We then applied two algorithms (Phase Locking Value & Phase-Lag Index) to study the dynamics of functional connectivity. In response to the same task, the subjects with lower cognitive reserve presented higher functional connectivity than those with higher cognitive reserve. These results may indicate that participants with low cognitive reserve needed a greater 'effort' than those with high cognitive reserve to achieve the same level of cognitive performance. Therefore, we conclude that cognitive reserve contributes to the modulation of the functional connectivity patterns of the aging brain.

This work maps and analyses cross-citations in the areas of Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Medicine in the English version of Wikipedia, which are represented as an undirected complex network where the entries correspond to nodes and the citations among the entries are mapped as edges. We found a high value of clustering coefficient for the areas of Biology and Medicine, and a small value for Mathematics and Physics. The topological organization is also different for each network, including a modular structure for Biology and Medicine, a sparse structure for Mathematics and a dense core for Physics. The networks have degree distributions that can be approximated by a power-law with a cut-off. The assortativity of the isolated networks has also been investigated and the results indicate distinct patterns for each subject. We estimated the betweenness centrality of each node considering the full Wikipedia network, which contains the nodes of the four subjects and the edges between them. In addition, the average shortest path length between the subjects revealed a close relationship between the subjects of Biology and Physics, and also between Medicine and Physics. Our results indicate that the analysis of the full Wikipedia network cannot predict the behavior of the isolated categories since their properties can be very different from those observed in the full network. There have been numerous attempts to reveal the neurobiological basis of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Results however, remain as heterogeneous as the schizophrenia spectrum disorders itself. Therefore, one aim of this thesis was to divide patients affected by this disorder into subgroups in order to homogenize the results of future studies. In a first study it is suggested that psychopathological rating scales should focus on symptoms-clusters that may have a common neurophysiological background. The here presented Bern Psychopathology Scale (BPS) proposes that alterations in three wellknown brain systems (motor, language, and affective) are largely leading to the communication failures observable on a behavioral level, but also - as repeatedly hypothesized - to dysconnectivity within and between brain systems in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The external validity of the motor domain in the BPS was tested against the objective measure of 24 hours wrist actigraphy, in a second study. The subjective, the quantitative, as well as the global rating of the degree of motor disorders in this patient group showed significant correlations to the acquired motor activity. This result confirmed in a first step the practicability of the motor domain of the BPS, but needs further validation regarding pathological brain alterations. Finally, in a third study (independent from the two other studies), two cerebral Resting State Networks frequently altered in schizophrenia were investigated for the first time using simultaneous EEG/fMRI: The well-known default mode network and the left working memory network. Besides the changes in these fMRI-based networks, there are well-documented findings that patients exhibit alterations in EEG spectra compared to healthy controls. However, only through the multimodal approach it was possible to discover that patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders have a slower driving frequency of the Resting State Networks compared to the matched healthy controls. Such a dysfunctional coupling between neuronal frequency and functional brain organization could explain in a uni- or multifactorial way (dysfunctional cross-frequency coupling, maturational effects, vigilance fluctuations, task-related suppression), how the typical psychotic symptoms might occur. To conclude, the major contributions presented in this thesis were on one hand the development of a psychopathology rating scale that is based on the assumption of dysfunctional brain networks, as well as the new evidence of a dysfunctional triggering frequency of Resting State Networks from the simultaneous EEG/fMRI study in patients affected by a schizophrenia spectrum disorder.

DNA-grafted supramolecular polymers (SPs) allow the programmed organization of DNA in a highly regular, one-dimensional array. Oligonucleotides are arranged along the edges of pyrene-based helical polymers. Addition of complementary oligonucleotides triggers the assembly of individual nanoribbons resulting in the development of extended supramolecular networks. Network formation is enabled by cooperative coaxial stacking interactions of terminal GC base pairs. The process is accompanied by structural changes in the pyrene polymer core that can be followed spectroscopically. Network formation is reversible, and disassembly into individual ribbons is realized either via thermal denaturation or by addition of a DNA separator strand.

Production networks have been extensively developed in the Asia-Pacific region. This paper employs two micro-level approaches, case studies and econometric analysis, using JETRO's firm surveys which investigate Japanese affiliates operating in Southeast Asia. These two approaches found that production networks have extended, involving suppliers, across various nations in the Asia-Pacific region, and that production bases in host and home countries have different roles. A home country serves as a headquarters with services such as R&D, international marketing, and financing. A high tariff policy in a host country may foster domestic industries through the expansion of procurement from domestic suppliers, either indigenous or foreign, but it may discourage a country from becoming an export platform.

Although progressive functional brain network disruption has been one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer?s Dis- ease, little is known about the origin of this functional impairment that underlies cognitive symptoms. We in- vestigated how the loss of white matter (WM) integrity disrupts the organization of the functional networks at different frequency bands. The analyses were performed in a sample of healthy elders and mild cognitive im- pairment (MCI) subjects. Spontaneous brain magnetic activity (measured with magnetoencephalography) was characterized with phase synchronization analysis, and graph theory was applied to the functional networks. We identified WM areas (using diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging) that showed a statistical de- pendence between the fractional anisotropy and the graph metrics. These regions are part of an episodic mem- ory network and were also related to cognitive functions. Our data support the hypothesis that disruption of the anatomical networks influences the organization at the functional level resulting in the prodromal dementia syndrome of MCI.

Functional annotation of novel genes can be achieved by detection of interactions of their encoded proteins with known proteins followed by assays to validate that the gene participates in a specific cellular function. We report an experimental strategy that allows for detection of protein interactions and functional assays with a single reporter system. Interactions among biochemical network component proteins are detected and probed with stimulators and inhibitors of the network. In addition, the cellular location of the interacting proteins is determined. We used this strategy to map a signal transduction network that controls initiation of translation in eukaryotes. We analyzed 35 different pairs of full-length proteins and identified 14 interactions, of which five have not been observed previously, suggesting that the organization of the pathway is more ramified and integrated than previously shown. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using this strategy in efforts of genomewide functional annotation.

The existing body of knowledge has generally supported that organizational culture plays a significant role in shaping group identity, work pattern, communication schemes, and interpersonal relations; all of these cultural elements are important organizational factors that shape workplaces and operational routines. In the context of emerging information technology, it has also been suggested that organizational culture could affect IT implementation and management. However, little is known about how emerging information technology shapes organizational culture, which in turn helps reshape the organization as a whole. The purpose of this paper is thus to build empirical understanding of how IT in general and emerging wireless networks in particular reshapes organizational culture. Case studies conducted in two hospitals situated in southwest U.S.A. illustrated that the implementation of wireless networks indeed helped shape and/or reshape organizational culture in the healthcare sector and in turn enhance healthcare organizations’ competitiveness in the marketplace. For IT managers and practitioners in healthcare institutions, effective strategy to plan and manage emerging ITs such as wireless networks will thus have long-term implications on cultivating organizational culture that could eventually reshape workplace and competitiveness.

In this paper, artificial neural networks are employed in a novel approach to identify harmonic components of single-phase nonlinear load currents, whose amplitude and phase angle are subject to unpredictable changes, even in steady-state. The first six harmonic current components are identified through the variation analysis of waveform characteristics. The effectiveness of this method is tested by applying it to the model of a single-phase active power filter, dedicated to the selective compensation of harmonic current drained by an AC controller. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed approach. (C) 2010 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The reconstruction of power industries has brought fundamental changes to both power system operation and planning. This paper presents a new planning method using multi-objective optimization (MOOP) technique, as well as human knowledge, to expand the transmission network in open access schemes. The method starts with a candidate pool of feasible expansion plans. Consequent selection of the best candidates is carried out through a MOOP approach, of which multiple objectives are tackled simultaneously, aiming at integrating the market operation and planning as one unified process in context of deregulated system. Human knowledge has been applied in both stages to ensure the selection with practical engineering and management concerns. The expansion plan from MOOP is assessed by reliability criteria before it is finalized. The proposed method has been tested with the IEEE 14-bus system and relevant analyses and discussions have been presented.

Objective: Individuals with autism spectrum disorders typically have normal visuospatial abilities but impaired executive functioning, particularly in abilities related to working memory and attention. The aim of this study was to elucidate the functioning of frontoparietal networks underlying spatial working memory processes during mental rotation in persons with autism spectrum disorders. Method: Seven adolescent males with normal IQ with an autism spectrum disorder and nine age- and IQ-matched male comparison subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging scans while performing a mental rotation task. Results: The autism spectrum disorders group showed less activation in lateral and medial premotor cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate gyrus, and caudate nucleus. Conclusions: The finding of less activation in prefrontal regions but not in parietal regions supports a model of dysfunction of frontostriatal networks in autism spectrum disorders.
