Huge magnetic fields are predicted1–4 to exist in the high-density region of plasmas produced during intense laser–matter interaction, near the criticaldensity surface where most laser absorption occurs, but until now these fields have never been measured. By using pulses focused to extreme intensities to investigate laser–plasma interactions5, we have been able to record the highest magnetic fields ever produced in a laboratory – over 340 megagauss – by polarimetry measurements of self-generated laser harmonics.

The discovery of the Photoacoustic (PA) effect was a remarkable achievement and was relegated to the scientific footnotes of the nineteenth century. However, after the advent of lasers and sophisticated electronics this effect was rediscovered and it has established itself as an important research and analytical tool in numerous areas, including physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. Quite recently, this phenomenon has made its impact in the field of laser technology for applications such as the developments of highly efficient active media for lasers, high quality optics and sensitive laser power monitoring devices. This thesis presents the work carried out by the author in this field during the past few years at the Department of Physics in Cochin University of Science and Technology. The studies discussed here are mostly based on the development of a sensitive PA laser power meter and its various applications using different laser systems available in the laboratory. This includes the development of a current regulated CW C0 laser and its application in material processing. The thesis contains seven chapters which by and large are self contained with separate abstracts and references. The first chapter which is divided into two parts presents an introduction to the PA effect and its present status. Part A reviews the basic theory of laser and gives a sum mary of various lasers and their applications. Part B presents a brief description of PA effect and its suitability as a spectroscopic tool followed by its applications to various branches of science and technology.

Coastal sand dunes represent a richness first of all in terms of defense from the sea storms waves and the saltwater ingression; moreover these morphological elements constitute an unique ecosystem of transition between the sea and the land environment. The research about dune system is a strong part of the coastal sciences, since the last century. Nowadays this branch have assumed even more importance for two reasons: on one side the born of brand new technologies, especially related to the Remote Sensing, have increased the researcher possibilities; on the other side the intense urbanization of these days have strongly limited the dune possibilities of development and fragmented what was remaining from the last century. This is particularly true in the Ravenna area, where the industrialization united to the touristic economy and an intense subsidence, have left only few dune ridges residual still active. In this work three different foredune ridges, along the Ravenna coast, have been studied with Laser Scanner technology. This research didn’t limit to analyze volume or spatial difference, but try also to find new ways and new features to monitor this environment. Moreover the author planned a series of test to validate data from Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS), with the additional aim of finalize a methodology to test 3D survey accuracy. Data acquired by TLS were then applied on one hand to test some brand new applications, such as Digital Shore Line Analysis System (DSAS) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to prove their efficacy in this field; on the other hand the author used TLS data to find any correlation with meteorological indexes (Forcing Factors), linked to sea and wind (Fryberger's method) applying statistical tools, such as the Principal Component Analysis (PCA).

It is well known that lasers have helped to increase efficiency and to reduce production costs in the photovoltaic (PV) sector in the last two decades, appearing in most cases as the ideal tool to solve some of the critical bottlenecks of production both in thin film (TF) and crystalline silicon (c-Si) technologies. The accumulated experience in these fields has brought as a consequence the possibility of using laser technology to produce new Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) products with a high degree of customization. However, to produce efficiently these personalized products it is necessary the development of optimized laser processes able to transform standard products in customized items oriented to the BIPV market. In particular, the production of semitransparencies and/or freeform geometries in TF a-Si modules and standard c-Si modules is an application of great interest in this market. In this work we present results of customization of both TF a-Si modules and standard monocrystalline (m-Si) and policrystalline silicon (pc-Si) modules using laser ablation and laser cutting processes. A discussion about the laser processes parameterization to guarantee the functionality of the device is included. Finally some examples of final devices are presented with a full discussion of the process approach used in their fabrication.

Background To evaluate and report the visual, refractive, and aberrometric outcomes of LASIK for the correction of low to moderate hyperopia in a pilot group using a commercially available solid-state laser. Methods Prospective pilot study including 11 consecutive eyes with low to moderate hyperopia of six patients undergoing LASIK surgery using the Pulzar Z1 solid-state laser (CustomVis Laser Pty Ltd., currently CV Laser). Visual, refractive, and aberrometric changes were evaluated. Potential complications were evaluated as well. Mean follow-up time was 6.6 months (range, 3 to 11 months). Results A significant improvement in LogMAR uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was observed postoperatively (p = 0.01). No significant change was detected in LogMAR corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) (p = 0.21). Postoperative LogMAR UDVA was 0.1 (about 20/25) or better in ten eyes (90.9 %). Mean overall efficacy and safety indices were 1.03 and 1.12. Postoperatively, no losses of lines of CDVA were observed. Postoperative spherical equivalent was within ±1.00 D in ten eyes (90.9 %). With regard to aberrations, no statistically significant changes were found in higher order and primary coma RMS postoperatively (p ≥ 0.21), and only minimal but statistically significant negativization of primary spherical aberration (p = 0.02) was observed. No severe complications were observed. Conclusion LASIK surgery using the solid-state laser technology seems to be a useful procedure for the correction of low to moderate hyperopia, with minimal induction of higher order aberrations.

A simple technique for determining the energy sensitivities for the thermographic recording of laser beams is described. The principle behind this technique is that, if a laser beam with a known spatial distribution such as a Gaussian profile is used for imaging, the radius of the thermal image formed depends uniquely on the intensity of the impinging beam. Thus by measuring the radii of the images produced for different incident beam intensities the minimum intensity necessary (that is, the threshold) for thermographic imaging is found. The diameter of the laser beam can also be found from this measurement. A simple analysis based on the temperature distribution in the laser heated material shows that there is an inverse square root dependence on pulse duration or period of exposure for the energy fluence of the laser beam required, both for the threshold and the subsequent increase in the size of the recording. It has also been shown that except for low intensity, long duration exposure on very low conductivity materials, heat losses are not very significant.

We propose a simplified technique for dual wavelength operation of an extended cavity semiconductor laser, and its characterization using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In this laser cavity scheme light beam is made converging before it incidences on the cavity grating. The converging angle of the beam creates two longitudinal oscillating modes of resonating cavity. Frequency separation between the longitudinal modes are measured with the help of beat frequency generation in a photodiode and creating pair of EIT spectra in Rb vapor. The pair of EIT dips that are generated due to dual wavelength of this laser (that is used as control laser) can be used to estimate frequency difference between the generated wavelengths. Width of EIT spectra can be used to estimate line width of individual wavelength components.

A chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) that operates without primary buffer gas has become a new way of facilitating the compact integration of laser systems. To clarify the properties of spatial gain distribution, three-dimensional (3-D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology was used to study the mixing and reactive flow in a COIL nozzle with an interleaving jet configuration in the supersonic section. The results show that the molecular iodine fraction in the secondary flow has a notable effect on the spatial distribution of the small signal gain. The rich iodine condition produces some negative gain regions along the jet trajectory, while the lean iodine condition slows down the development of the gain in the streamwise direction. It is also found that the new configuration of an interleaving jet helps form a reasonable gain field under appropriate operation conditions. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
