In order to access the effect of the lakes in the atmospheric electrical field, measurements have been carried out near a large man-made lake in southern Portugal, the Alqueva reservoir, during the ALqueva hydro-meteorological EXperiment 2014. The purpose of these conjoint experiments was to study the impact of the Alqueva reservoir on the atmosphere, in particular on the local atmospheric electric environment by comparing measurements taken in the proximity of the lake. Two stations 10 km apart were used, as they were located up- and down-wind of the lake (Amieira and Parque Solar, respectively), in reference to the dominant northwestern wind direction. The up-wind station shows lower atmospheric electric potential gradient (PG) values than the ones observed in the down-wind station between 12 and 20 UTC. The difference in the atmospheric electric PG between the up-wind and the down-wind station is ~30 V/m during the day. This differential occurs mainly during the development of a lake breeze, between 10 and 18 UTC, as a consequence of the surface temperature gradient between the surrounding land and the lake water. In the analysis presented, a correlation is found between the atmospheric electric PG differences and both wind speed and temperature gradients over the lake, thus supporting the influence of the lake breeze over the observed PG variation in the two stations. Two hypotheses are provided to explain this observation: (1) The air that flows from the lake into the land station is likely to increase the local electric conductivity through the removal of ground dust and the transport of cleaner air from higher altitudes with significant light ion concentrations. With such an increase in conductivity, it is expected to see a reduction of the atmospheric electric PG; (2) the resulting air flow over the land station carries negative ions formed by wave splashing in the lake's water surface, as a result of the so-called balloelectric effect. These negative ions will form a space-charge density (SCD) that can reduce the atmospheric electric PG. A formulation is derived here in order to estimate the local SCD.

High-resolution numerical model simulations have been used to study the local and mesoscale thermal circulations in an Alpine lake basin. The lake (87 km(2)) is situated in the Southern Alps, New Zealand and is located in a glacially excavated rock basin surrounded by mountain ranges that reach 3000 m in height. The mesoscale model used (RAMS) is a three-dimensional non-hydrostatic model with a level 2.5 turbulence closure scheme. The model demonstrates that thermal forcing at local (within the basin) and regional (coast-to-basin inflow) scales drive the observed boundary-layer airflow in the lake basin during clear anticyclonic summertime conditions. The results show that the lake can modify (perturb) both the local and regional wind systems. Following sunrise, local thermal circulations dominate, including a lake breeze component that becomes embedded within the background valley wind system. This results in a more divergent flow in the basin extending across the lake shoreline. However, a closed lake breeze circulation is neither observed nor modelled. Modelling results indicate that in the latter part of the day when the mesoscale (coast-to-basin) inflow occurs, the relatively cold pool of lake air in the basin can cause the intrusion to decouple from the surface. Measured data provide qualitative and quantitative support for the model results.

Local scale windfield and air mass characteristics during the onset of two foehn wind events in an alpine hydro-catchment are presented. Grounding of the topographically modified foehn was found to be dependent on daytime surface heating and topographic channelling of flow. The foehn front was observed to advance down-valley until the valley widened significantly. The foehn wind appeared to decouple from the surface downstream of the accelerated flow associated with the valley constriction. and to be lifted above local thermally generated circulations including a lake breeze. Towards evening. the foehn front retreated up valley in response to reduced surface heating and the intrusion into the study area of a deep and cool air mass associated with a regional scale mountain-plain circulation. Differences in the local windfield observed during both case study events reflect the importance of different thermal and dynamic forcings on airflow in complex terrain. These are the result of variation in surface energy exchanges, channelling and blocking of airflow. Observations presented here have both theoretical and applied implications with regard to forecasting foehn onset, wind hazard management, recreational activities and air quality management in alpine settings.

A região sul do Rio Grande do Sul está em localização favorável à formação de tipos de brisa bem caracterizados devido a sua proximidade com os sistemas lacustres e também o Oceano Atlântico. A diferença de vegetação e as temperaturas da superfície do mar, da laguna e do solo, são os principais impulsionadores das circulações locais. Uma das formas de analisar estas circulações locais é através de modelos que simulam a formação da brisa. Desta forma utilizou-se o modelo de mesoescala Weather Research and Forecasting para caracterizar as circulações locais na região sul do Brasil devido às influências do Oceano Atlântico e das lagoas presentes na região: Lagoa dos Patos, Lagoa Mangueira e Lagoa Mirim. Ao todo foram realizadas três simulações: uma para a validação do modelo e duas para simulação das brisas. O modelo apresentou correlações entre 0,7 e 0,9 para a temperatura do ar a dois metros e para a pressão atmosférica. As correlações para a umidade específica e para o vento a dez metros ficaram entre 0,3 e 0,8. Na simulação básica, a brisa lacustre apresentou intensidade máxima às 15 UTC (12 HL) sobre a Lagoa dos Patos e Mangueira e às 18 UTC (15 HL) sobre a Lagoa Mirim. Nos horários entre 0 UTC (21HL) e 9 UTC (6 HL), período em que a brisa terrestre está atuante, observou-se a rotação do vento no sentido anti-horário e também diminuição de intensidade. Para a simulação idealizada onde foi suprimido o efeito sinótico, a brisa marítima no início de sua formação sofreu um bloqueio pela brisa lacustre no horário das 15 UTC (12 HL). Esta oclusão permanece até às 18 UTC (15 HL). Após este período a brisa lacustre diminui a intensidade e dá lugar a brisa marítima que possui direção leste com intensidade menor do que a que foi observada na simulação básica. A brisa terrestre teve início às 0 UTC (21 HL) e seu valor máximo foi de 4 m/s as 9 UTC (6 HL). Para a validação do modelo concluiu-se que o mesmo é adequado para a avaliação das circulações locais. A brisa terrestre caracterizou-se melhor sem a presença do vento sinótico. As brisas Lacustres das Lagoas Mirins e dos Patos possuem influência maior do que a brisa gerada pela Lagoa Mangueira e em determinados períodos opõem-se ao avanço da brisa marítima. A associação do vento sinótico a brisa marítima intensifica a velocidade dos ventos, que por sua vez sobrepõem-se a brisa lacustre no final da tarde. A brisa terrestre formada durante a noite não é forte o suficiente para sobrepor o vento sinótico, mas reduz sua intensidade e altera sua direção.

A study was carried out in the area of influence of the Porto Primavera Hydroelectric Power Station, in western São Paulo State, to investigate ecological and epidemiological aspects of malaria in the area and monitor the profile of the anopheline populations following the environmental changes brought about by the construction of the lake. Mosquitoes captured were analyzed by standardized indicator species analysis (ISA) before and during different flooding phases (253 m and 257 m elevations). The local human population was studied by means of parasitological (thin/thick blood smears), molecular (PCR) and serological tests. Serological tests consisted of Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) with synthetic peptides of the circumsporozoite protein (CSP) from classic Plasmodium vivax, P. vivax variants (VK247 and "vivax-like"), P. malariae and P. falciparum and Indirect Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA) with asexual forms of P. vivax, P. malariae and P. falciparum. The results of the entomological survey indicated that, although the Anopheles darlingi population increased after the flooding, the population density remained very low. No malaria, parasite infection or DNA was detected in the inhabitants of the study area. However, there was a low frequency of antibodies against asexual forms and a significant prevalence of antibodies against P. vivax, P. vivax variants, P. falciparum and P. malariae; the presence of these antibodies may result from recent or less recent contact with human or simian Plasmodium (a parallel study in the same area revealed the existence of a sylvatic cycle). Nevertheless, these results suggest that, as in other places where malaria is present and potential vectors circulate, the local epidemiological conditions observed could potentially support the transmission of malaria in Porto Primavera Lake if infected individuals are introduced in sufficient numbers. Further studies are required to elucidate the phenomena described in this paper.

The effects of temperature on the life table, and of seston quality on the individual growth and reproduction of cladocerans from a tropical lake were tested in the laboratory. Life-table experiments were carried out at 17 degrees C, 23 degrees C, and 27 degrees C. Growth bioassays tested the influence of natural seston fractions, separated by net filtration, on cladocerans. The treatments were: (1) total seston plus Scenedesmus spinosus (1 mg C.L(-1)), (2) seston <= 36 mu m, and (3) seston >36 mu m. Phytoplankton composition, density, and biomass were evaluated during growth experiments, together with sestonic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations. The intrinsic rates of natural increase were higher for Moina micrura and Daphnia ambigua at 27 degrees C compared to 17 degrees C. The age at first reproduction of both species was delayed at 17 degrees C. Growth rates and fecundity of M. micrura were higher in the seston fraction <= 36 mu m than in the fraction > 36 mu m. Higher growth rates and fecundity of Moina minuta were observed in the seston enriched with the green alga in comparison to the seston <= 36 mu m and > 36 mu m. Bosmina longirostris was unable to reproduce at 17 degrees C and to grow in the seston > 36 mu m in one experiment. High densities and/or biomass of large colonial and filamentous algae present in the larger seston fraction could have contributed to reduce growth and reproduction. Episodes of food-quantity limitation may occur, but there was no evidence of mineral limitation, although seston C:P and C:N ratios were always above the limiting values assumed for temperate water bodies. The C:P and C:N ratios arc highly influenced by carbon that originates primarily from resuspended detritus from the lake.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of photocoagulation with high-intensity diode laser in the treatment of venous lake (VL) lesions. Background Data: VL is a common vascular lesion characterized by elevated, usually dome-shaped papules, ranging in color from dark blue to dark purple, seen more frequently in elderly patients. They often occur as single lesions on the ears, face, lips, or neck. Once formed, lesions persist throughout life. Although these lesions are usually asymptomatic, they can bleed if injured. Methods: Seventeen patients (7 men and 10 women) with VL on the lip were treated using a noncontact diode laser (wavelength 808 nm, power output 2-3 W in continuous wave). Results: After only one irradiation exposure, all lesions were successfully treated. Healing was completed in approximately 2 to 3 weeks, and none of the patients experienced complications. Postoperative discomfort and scarring were not present or were minimal. Conclusion: Photocoagulation with high-intensity diode laser is an effective, bloodless procedure for the treatment of VL.
