Diplomityössä käsitellään ydinvoimalaitoksen matalapaineturbiinin ulosvirtauskanavaa. Tavoitteena oli tarkastella ulosvirtauskanavassa syntyviä häviöitä sekä niiden pienentämistä. Tarkastelussa käsiteltiin jossain määrin myös turbiinin viimeisessä siipivaiheessa syntyviä häviöitä. Työssä selvitettiin Loviisan voimalaitoksella tehtyihin mittauksiin perustuen painehäviö ulosvirtauskanavassa lauhduttimen paineen funktiona ja näiden syntyvien häviöiden vaikutusta turbiinin tuottamaan teoreettiseen tehoon. Ulosvirtauskanavan diffuusoria käsiteltiin omana laajana kokonaisuutenaan. Aluksi tarkasteltiin diffuusorin suorituskykyä yksinkertaisiin laskelmiin perustuen, jonka jälkeen diffuusorin toimintaa mallinnettiin FLUENT – laskentaohjelmalla, jolloin voitiin paremmin havainnollistaa virtauksen käyttäytymistä diffuusorissa. Kokeellisia mittaustuloksia ei ollut käytössä, joten laskennan oikeellisuus jäi tältä osin toteamatta.

Tämä kandidaatintyö käsittelee rasva-aerosolien vähentämistä liesituulettimissa ultraviolettivalon (UV) ja titaanioksidin avulla (TiO2). Työssä käsitellään rasva-aerosolien aiheuttamia haittoja julkisissa keittiöissä ja liesituulettimen merkitystä rasva-aerosolipitoisuuksiin. Työn tavoitteena on selvittää, miten rasva-aerosolit käyttäytyvät kun niitä suodatetaan UV-valon ja TiO2-katalyytin avulla. Työssä myös pohditaan onko UV/TiO2-menetelmä tehokas liesituulettimen rasvan vähentäjä.

Diplomityössä tutkittiin Fortumin Loviisan ydinvoimalaitoksen ulosvirtauskanaviston ja suurnopeuskosteudenerottimen toimintaa, sekä selvitettiin taustalla olevaa teoriaa ja aiemmin tehtyjä tutkimuksia. Tavoitteena oli ymmärtää ja esittää laitteiden toimintaa, sekä tutkia voiko ulosvirtauskanaviston suorituskykyä parantaa geometrian muutoksilla. Työssä luotiin tutkittaville kohteille geometriat ja laskentahilat, joiden avulla simuloitiin niiden toimintaa eri käyttötilanteissa numeerisen virtauslaskennan avulla. Laskennan reunaehdot saatiin olemassa olevasta prosessimallista ja aiemmista turbiiniselvityksistä. Ulosvirtauskanaviston suorituskyky laskettiin kolmella eri lauhdutinpaineella neljällä eri geometrialla. Geometrian muutokset vaikuttivat selkeästi ulosvirtauskanaviston suorituskykyyn ja sitä saatiin parannettua. Kaksi kolmesta muutoksesta, lisäkanavat ja oikaistu vesilippa, pa-ransivat suorituskykyä. Lokinsiipien poistaminen heikensi ulosvirtauskanaviston toi-mintaa. Suurnopeuskosteudenerottimen mallintaminen jäi lähtötietojen ja ajan puutteen takia hieman tavoitteesta. Sekä ulosvirtauskanaviston että suurnopeuskosteudenerotti-men jatkotutkimusta ja mahdollisia toimenpiteitä varten saatiin arvokasta uutta tietoa.

Diplomityössä tutkittiin höyryturbiinin ulosvirtauskanavistojen kokeellisia tutkimusmenetelmiä ja suoritettiin käytännön mittauksia Fortum Oyj:n Loviisan ydinvoimalaitoksen höyryturbiinien huuvan pienoismallilla. Kirjallisuusselvityksen perusteella todettiin, että pienoismallitutkimuksella on ollut keskeinen asema ulosvirtauskanavistojen suunnittelussa. Kokeellisten menetelmien perusongelmana on höyryturbiinin ulosvirtausolosuhteiden jäljitteleminen. Käytetyt mittausmenetelmät perustuvat pääosin tavanomaisiin paine- ja nopeusmittauksiin. Lisäainepartikkeleihin ja laser-valaisuun perustuva PIV (particle image velocimetry) todettiin lupaavaksi menetelmäksi ulosvirtauskanavistojen tutkimuksen saralla. Työn käytännön osuudessa tehtiin mittauksia mittasuhteessa 1:8 rakennetulle höyryturbiinin huuvan pienoismallille. Mittauksilla tutkittiin virtausta mallin sisääntulo- ja ulostulotasoissa. Lisäksi mitattiin staattisen paineen jakauma huuvan sisällä. Kokonaispainetta mittaava kiel-putki todettiin käytännölliseksi työkaluksi huuvan virtauskentän tutkimuksessa. Tuloksista käy hyvin ilmi huuvan ulostuloon syntyvien pyörteiden muodostuminen ja ulostulon epätasainen nopeusjakauma. Staattinen paine huuvan sisällä havaittiin epätasaisesti jakautuneeksi. Ulostulotason ja staattisen paineen mittauksilla saadut tulokset sopivat hyvin yhteen kirjallisuudesta löytyvien tutkimustulosten kanssa ja tukevat Loviisan ulosvirtauskanavistosta aiemmin tehtyjä CFD-simulointeja.

Objective: From Census data, to document the distribution of general practitioners in Australia and to estimate the number of general practitioners needed to achieve an equitable distribution accounting for community health need. Methods: Data on location of general practitioners, population size and crude mortality by statistical division (SD) were obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The number of patients per general practitioner by SD was calculated and plotted. Using crude mortality to estimate community health need, a ratio of the number of general practitioners per person:mortality was calculated for all Australia and for each SD (the Robin Hood Index). From this, the number of general practitioners needed to achieve equity was calculated. Results: In all, 26,290 general practitioners were identified in 57 SDs. The mean number of people per general practitioner is 707, ranging from 551 to 1887. Capital city SDs have most favourable ratios. The Robin Hood Index for Australia is 1, and ranges from 0.32 (relatively under-served) to 2.46 (relatively over-served). Twelve SDs (21%) including all capital cities and 65% of all Australians, have a Robin Hood Index > 1. To achieve equity per capita 2489 more general practitioners (10% of the current workforce) are needed. To achieve equity by the Robin Hood Index 3351 (13% of the current workforce) are needed. Conclusions: The distribution of general practitioners in Australia is skewed. Nonmetropolitan areas are relatively underserved. Census data and the Robin Hood Index could provide a simple means of identifying areas of need in Australia.

Carbon monoxide, the chief killer in fires, and other species are modelled for a series of enclosure fires. The conditions emulate building fires where CO is formed in the rich, turbulent, nonpremixed flame and is transported frozen to lean mixtures by the ceiling jet which is cooled by radiation and dilution. Conditional moment closure modelling is used and computational domain minimisation criteria are developed which reduce the computational cost of this method. The predictions give good agreement for CO and other species in the lean, quenched-gas stream, holding promise that this method may provide a practical means of modelling real, three-dimensional fire situations. An increased risk of early pregnancy loss in women briefly exposed to high levels of ambient particulate matter during the preconceptional period was recently observed. The effects of this exposure on early embryo development are unknown. This study was designed to assess the dose-response and biological effects of diesel exhaust particles (DEP) on in vitro embryo development using the in vitro fertilization (IVF) mouse model. Zygotes obtained from superovulated mice after IVF were randomly cultured in different DEP concentrations (0, 0.2, 2, and 20 mu g/cm(2)) for 5 days and observed for their capacity to attach and develop on a fibronectin matrix until day 8. Main outcome measures included blastocyst rates 96 and 120 h after insemination, hatching discriminatory score, total cell count, proportion of cell allocation to inner cell mass (ICM) and trophectoderm (TE), ICM morphology, attachment rate and outgrowth area, apoptosis and necrosis rates, and Oct-4 and Cdx-2 expression. Multivariate analysis showed a negative dose-dependent effect on early embryo development and hatching process, blastocyst cell allocation, and ICM morphology. Although blastocyst attachment and outgrowth were not affected by DEP, a significant impairment of ICM integrity was observed in day 8 blastocysts. Cell death through apoptosis was significantly higher after DEP exposure. Oct-4 expression and the Oct-4/Cdx-2 ratio were significantly decreased in day 5 blastocysts irrespective of DEP concentration. Results suggest that DEP appear to play an important role in disrupting cell lineage segregation and ICM morphological integrity even at lower concentrations, compromising future growth and viability of the blastocyst.

Analysis of fuel emissions is crucial for understanding the pathogenesis of mortality because of air pollution. The objective of this study is to assess cardiovascular and inflammatory toxicity of diesel and biodiesel particles. Mice were exposed to fuels for 1 h. Heart rate (HR), heart rate variability, and blood pressure were obtained before exposure, as well as 30 and 60 min after exposure. After 24 h, bronchoalveolar lavage, blood, and bone marrow were collected to evaluate inflammation. B100 decreased the following emission parameters: mass, black carbon, metals, CO, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and volatile organic compounds compared with B50 and diesel; root mean square of successive differences in the heart beat interval increased with diesel (p < 0.05) compared with control; low frequency increased with diesel (p < 0.01) and B100 (p < 0.05) compared with control; HR increased with B100 (p < 0.05) compared with control; mean corpuscular volume increased with B100 compared with diesel (p < 0.01), B50, and control (p < 0.001); mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration decreased with B100 compared with B50 (p < 0.001) and control (p < 0.05); leucocytes increased with B50 compared with diesel (p < 0.05); platelets increased with B100 compared with diesel and control (p < 0.05); reticulocytes increased with B50 compared with diesel, control (p < 0.01), and B100 (p < 0.05); metamyelocytes increased with B50 and B100 compared with diesel (p < 0.05); neutrophils increased with diesel and B50 compared with control (p < 0.05); and macrophages increased with diesel (p < 0.01), B50, and B100 (p < 0.05) compared with control. Biodiesel was more toxic than diesel because it promoted cardiovascular alterations as well as pulmonary and systemic inflammation.

Diesel exhaust is the major source of ultrafine particles released during traffic-related pollution. Subjects with chronic respiratory diseases are at greater risk for exacerbations during exposure to air pollution. This study evaluated the effects of subchronic exposure to a low-dose of diesel exhaust particles (DEP). Sixty male BALB/c mice were divided into two groups: (a) Saline: nasal instillation of saline (n = 30); and (b) DEP: nasal instillation of 30 mu g of DEP/10 mu l of saline (n = 30). Nasal instillations were performed 5 days a week, over 30 and 60 days. Animals were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium (50 mg/kg intraperitoneal [i.p.]) and sacrificed by exsanguination. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid was performed to evaluate the inflammatory cell count and the concentrations of the interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, and IL-13 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The gene expression of oligomeric mucus/gel-forming (Muc5ac) was evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Histological analysis in the nasal septum and bronchioles was used to evaluate the bronchial and nasal epithelium thickness as well as the acidic and neutral nasal mucus content. The saline group (30 and 60 days) did not show any changes in any of the parameters. However, the instillation of DEP over 60 days increased the expression of Muc5ac in the lungs and the acid mucus content in the nose compared with the 30-day treatment, and it increased the total leukocytes in the BAL and the nasal epithelium thickness compared with saline for 60 days. Cytokines concentrations in the BAL were detectable, with no differences among the groups. Our data suggest that a low-dose of DEP over 60 days induces respiratory tract inflammation.

Objectives: To document and describe motorbike exhaust burns on children. Design, Patients and Setting: Departmental database and case note review of all children with motorbike exhaust burns seen at the Stuart Pegg Paediatric Burns Centre, Brisbane between January 1996 and October 2001. Main outcome measures: Number and age of children burned, circumstances of the injury, burns sustained, treatment required and long-term sequelae. Results: Twenty-four children, median age 8 years, sustained thermal burns, most commonly to the right lower leg. Thirteen children required surgery, and 17 required chronic scar management. Conclusions: We have identified motorbike exhausts as a cause of burns in children. The injuries received resulted in significant morbidity to these children and warrants a campaign airned at reducing the incidence of such injuries. O objecto de estudo deste trabalho é a construção da identidade masculina afro-americana, e representação desta no cinema liberal de Hollywood. Isolam-se três momentos de particular relevo: o período do cinema mudo antes da Primeira Guerra Mundial, os anos 1960-70 e por fim, a década de 1990. Traçar-se-á um percurso analítico que examina obras-chave da história do cinema comercial de Hollywood bem como manifestações do cinema independente afro-americano entabulando um diálogo permanente com o contexto histórico e social, nomeadamente a luta pelos direitos civis, a afirmação do Black Power, traduzida cinematograficamente na Blaxploitation, para finalmente se concentrar em Boyz n the Hood escolhido como sintomático de um impulso regenerativo das representações masculinas afro-americanas, sob forte ataque dos media populares nas últimas décadas do século XX.
