The widespread use of digital imaging devices for surveillance (CCTV) and entertainment (e.g., mobile phones, compact cameras) has increased the number of images recorded and opportunities to consider the images as traces or documentation of criminal activity. The forensic science literature focuses almost exclusively on technical issues and evidence assessment [1]. Earlier steps in the investigation phase have been neglected and must be considered. This article is the first comprehensive description of a methodology to event reconstruction using images. This formal methodology was conceptualised from practical experiences and applied to different contexts and case studies to test and refine it. Based on this practical analysis, we propose a systematic approach that includes a preliminary analysis followed by four main steps. These steps form a sequence for which the results from each step rely on the previous step. However, the methodology is not linear, but it is a cyclic, iterative progression for obtaining knowledge about an event. The preliminary analysis is a pre-evaluation phase, wherein potential relevance of images is assessed. In the first step, images are detected and collected as pertinent trace material; the second step involves organising and assessing their quality and informative potential. The third step includes reconstruction using clues about space, time and actions. Finally, in the fourth step, the images are evaluated and selected as evidence. These steps are described and illustrated using practical examples. The paper outlines how images elicit information about persons, objects, space, time and actions throughout the investigation process to reconstruct an event step by step. We emphasise the hypothetico-deductive reasoning framework, which demonstrates the contribution of images to generating, refining or eliminating propositions or hypotheses. This methodology provides a sound basis for extending image use as evidence and, more generally, as clues in investigation and crime reconstruction processes.

This study presents an innovative methodology for forensic science image analysis for event reconstruction. The methodology is based on experiences from real cases. It provides real added value to technical guidelines such as standard operating procedures (SOPs) and enriches the community of practices at stake in this field. This bottom-up solution outlines the many facets of analysis and the complexity of the decision-making process. Additionally, the methodology provides a backbone for articulating more detailed and technical procedures and SOPs. It emerged from a grounded theory approach; data from individual and collective interviews with eight Swiss and nine European forensic image analysis experts were collected and interpreted in a continuous, circular and reflexive manner. Throughout the process of conducting interviews and panel discussions, similarities and discrepancies were discussed in detail to provide a comprehensive picture of practices and points of view and to ultimately formalise shared know-how. Our contribution sheds light on the complexity of the choices, actions and interactions along the path of data collection and analysis, enhancing both the researchers' and participants' reflexivity.

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a facility built to detect air showers produced by cosmic rays above 10(17) eV. During clear nights with a low illuminated moon fraction, the UV fluorescence light produced by air showers is recorded by optical telescopes at the Observatory. To correct the observations for variations in atmospheric conditions, atmospheric monitoring is performed at regular intervals ranging from several minutes (for cloud identification) to several hours (for aerosol conditions) to several days (for vertical profiles of temperature, pressure, and humidity). In 2009, the monitoring program was upgraded to allow for additional targeted measurements of atmospheric conditions shortly after the detection of air showers of special interest, e. g., showers produced by very high-energy cosmic rays or showers with atypical longitudinal profiles. The former events are of particular importance for the determination of the energy scale of the Observatory, and the latter are characteristic of unusual air shower physics or exotic primary particle types. The purpose of targeted (or "rapid") monitoring is to improve the resolution of the atmospheric measurements for such events. In this paper, we report on the implementation of the rapid monitoring program and its current status. The rapid monitoring data have been analyzed and applied to the reconstruction of air showers of high interest, and indicate that the air fluorescence measurements affected by clouds and aerosols are effectively corrected using measurements from the regular atmospheric monitoring program. We find that the rapid monitoring program has potential for supporting dedicated physics analyses beyond the standard event reconstruction.

Future experiments in nuclear and particle physics are moving towards the high luminosity regime in order to access rare processes. In this framework, particle detectors require high rate capability together with excellent timing resolution for precise event reconstruction. In order to achieve this, the development of dedicated FrontEnd Electronics (FEE) for detectors has become increasingly challenging and expensive. Thus, a current trend in R&D is towards flexible FEE that can be easily adapted to a great variety of detectors, without impairing the required high performance. This thesis reports on a novel FEE for two different detector types: imaging Cherenkov counters and plastic scintillator arrays. The former requires high sensitivity and precision for detection of single photon signals, while the latter is characterized by slower and larger signals typical of scintillation processes. The FEE design was developed using high-bandwidth preamplifiers and fast discriminators which provide Time-over-Threshold (ToT). The use of discriminators allowed for low power consumption, minimal dead-times and self-triggering capabilities, all fundamental aspects for high rate applications. The output signals of the FEE are readout by a high precision TDC system based on FPGA. The performed full characterization of the analogue signals under realistic conditions proved that the ToT information can be used in a novel way for charge measurements or walk corrections, thus improving the obtainable timing resolution. Detailed laboratory investigations proved the feasibility of the ToT method. The full readout chain was investigated in test experiments at the Mainz Microtron: high counting rates per channel of several MHz were achieved, and a timing resolution of better than 100 ps after walk correction based on ToT was obtained. Ongoing applications to fast Time-of-Flight counters and future developments of FEE have been also recently investigated.

The Short Baseline Neutrino Program at Fermilab aims to confirm or definitely rule out the existence of sterile neutrinos at the eV mass scale. The program will perform the most sensitive search in both the nue appearance and numu disappearance channels along the Booster Neutrino Beamline. The far detector, ICARUS-T600, is a high-granularity Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber located at 600 m from the Booster neutrino source and at shallow depth, thus exposed to a large flux of cosmic particles. Additionally, ICARUS is located 6 degrees off axis with respect to the Neutrino beam from the Main Injector. This thesis presents the construction, installation and commissioning of the ICARUS Cosmic Ray Tagger system, providing a 4 pi coverage of the active liquid argon volume. By exploiting only the precise nanosecond scale synchronization of the cosmic tagger and the PMT optical flashes it is possible to determine if an event was likely triggered by a cosmic particle. The results show that using the Top Cosmic Ray Tagger alone a conservative rejection larger than 65% of the cosmic induced background can be achieved. Additionally, by requiring the absence of hits in the whole cosmic tagger system it is possible to perform a pre-selection of contained neutrino events ahead of the full event reconstruction.

The neutrino mass ordering and the leptonic CP violation phase are key parameters of the three-neutrino flavour mixing still to be determined. Measuring these parameters is the main goal of DUNE, a next generation Long Baseline neutrino experiment under construction in the United States. DUNE will feature a Near and a Far Detector site. An important component of the Near detector complex is the SAND apparatus, which will include GRAIN, a novel liquid Argon detector that aims at imaging neutrino interactions using scintillation light. For this purpose, an innovative optical readout system based on Coded Aperture Masks is under study. This thesis work is aimed at a first quantitative assessment of a 3D neutrino event reconstruction algorithm for GRAIN. The processing procedure is optimized and the reconstruction performance is evaluated. Promising results are obtained.

The effect of event background fluctuations on charged particle jet reconstruction in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV has been measured with the ALICE experiment. The main sources of non-statistical fluctuations are characterized based purely on experimental data with an unbiased method, as well as by using single high p(t) particles and simulated jets embedded into real Pb-Pb events and reconstructed with the anti-k(t) jet finder. The influence of a low transverse momentum cut-off on particles used in the jet reconstruction is quantified by varying the minimum track p(t) between 0.15 GeV/c and 2 GeV/c. For embedded jets reconstructed from charged particles with p(t) > 0.15 GeV/c, the uncertainty in the reconstructed jet transverse momentum due to the heavy-ion background is measured to be 11.3 GeV/c (standard deviation) for the 10% most central Pb-Pb collisions, slightly larger than the value of 11.0 GeV/c measured using the unbiased method. For a higher particle transverse momentum threshold of 2 GeV/c, which will generate a stronger bias towards hard fragmentation in the jet finding process, the standard deviation of the fluctuations in the reconstructed jet transverse momentum is reduced to 4.8-5.0 GeV/c for the 10% most central events. A non-Gaussian tail of the momentum uncertainty is observed and its impact on the reconstructed jet spectrum is evaluated for varying particle momentum thresholds, by folding the measured fluctuations with steeply falling spectra.

The mid-Cretaceous is thought to be a greenhouse world with significantly higher atmospheric pCO2 and sea-surface temperatures as well as a much flatter latitudinal thermal gradient compared to the present. This time interval was punctuated by the Cenomanian/Turonian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE-2, ~ 93.5 Myr ago), an episode of global, massive organic carbon burial that likely resulted in a large and abrupt pCO2 decline. However, the climatic consequences of this pCO2 drop are yet poorly constrained. We determined the first, high-resolution sea-surface temperature (SST) record across OAE-2 from a deep-marine sedimentary sequence at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1276 in the mid-latitudinal Newfoundland Basin, NW Atlantic. By employing the organic palaeothermometer TEX86, we found that SSTs across the OAE-2 interval were extremely high, but were punctuated by a remarkably large cooling (5-11 °C), which is synchronous with the 2.5-5.5 °C cooling in SST records from equatorial Atlantic sites, and the "Plenus Cold Event". Because this global cooling event is concurrent with increased organic carbon burial, it likely acted in response to the associated pCO2 drop. Our findings imply a substantial increase in the latitudinal SST gradient in the proto-North Atlantic during this period of global cooling and reduced atmospheric pCO2, suggesting a strong coupling between pCO2 and latitudinal thermal gradients under greenhouse climate conditions.

This article presents a global vision of images in forensic science. The proliferation of perspectives on the use of images throughout criminal investigations and the increasing demand for research on this topic seem to demand a forensic science-based analysis. In this study, the definitions of and concepts related to material traces are revisited and applied to images, and a structured approach is used to persuade the scientific community to extend and improve the use of images as traces in criminal investigations. Current research efforts focus on technical issues and evidence assessment. This article provides a sound foundation for rationalising and explaining the processes involved in the production of clues from trace images. For example, the mechanisms through which these visual traces become clues of presence or action are described. An extensive literature review of forensic image analysis emphasises the existing guidelines and knowledge available for answering investigative questions (who, what, where, when and how). However, complementary developments are still necessary to demystify many aspects of image analysis in forensic science, including how to review and select images or use them to reconstruct an event or assist intelligence efforts. The hypothetico-deductive reasoning pathway used to discover unknown elements of an event or crime can also help scientists understand the underlying processes involved in their decision making. An analysis of a single image in an investigative or probative context is used to demonstrate the highly informative potential of images as traces and/or clues. Research efforts should be directed toward formalising the extraction and combination of clues from images. An appropriate methodology is key to expanding the use of images in forensic science.
