We introduce a general technique how to reveal in experiments of limited electrical bandwidth which is lower than the optical bandwidth of the optical signal under study, whether the statistical properties of the light source obey Gaussian distribution or mode correlations do exist. To do that one needs to perform measurements by decreasing the measurement bandwidth. We develop a simple model of bandwidth-limited measurements and predict universal laws how intensity probability density function and intensity auto-correlation function of ideal completely stochastic source of Gaussian statistics depend on limited measurement bandwidth and measurement noise level. Results of experimental investigation are in good agreement with model predictions. In particular, we reveal partial mode correlations in the radiation of quasi-CW Raman fibre laser.

In the present paper we numerically study instrumental impact on statistical properties of quasi-CW Raman fiber laser using a simple model of multimode laser radiation. Effects, that have the most influence, are limited electrical bandwidth of measurement equipment and noise. To check this influence, we developed a simple model of the multimode quasi- CW generation with exponential statistics (i.e. uncorrelated modes). We found that the area near zero intensity in probability density function (PDF) is strongly affected by both factors, for example both lead to formation of a negative wing of intensity distribution. But far wing slope of PDF is not affected by noise and, for moderate mismatch between optical and electrical bandwidth, is only slightly affected by bandwidth limitation. The generation spectrum often becomes broader at higher power in experiments, so the spectral/electrical bandwidth mismatch factor increases over the power that can lead to artificial dependence of the PDF slope over the power. It was also found that both effects influence the ACF background level: noise impact decreases it, while limited bandwidth leads to its increase. © (2014) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Magnetic manipulation finds diverse applications in actuation, characterization, and manipulation of micro-and nano-scale samples. This paper presents the design and development of a novel magnetic micro-manipulator for application of three-dimensional forces on a magnetic micro-bead. A simple analytical model is proposed to obtain the forces of interaction between the magnetic micromanipulator and a magnetic micro-bead. Subsequently, guidelines are proposed to perform systematic design and analysis of the micro-manipulator. The designed micro-manipulator is fabricated and evaluated. The manipulator is experimentally demonstrated to possess an electrical bandwidth of about 1 MHz. The ability of the micro-manipulator to apply both in-plane and out-of-plane forces is demonstrated by actuating permanent-magnet micro-beads attached to micro-cantilever beams. The deformations of the micro-cantilevers are also employed to calibrate the dependence of in-plane and out-of-plane forces on the position of the micro-bead relative to the micro-manipulator. The experimentally obtained dependences are found to agree well with theory. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

With consideration of the modulation frequency of the input lightwave itself, we present a new model to calculate the quantum efficiency of RCE p-i-n photodetectors (PD) by superimposition of multiple reflected lightwaves. For the first time, the optical delay, another important factor limiting the electrical bandwidth of RCE p-i-n PD excluding the transit time of the carriers and RCd response of the photodetector, is analyzed and discussed in detail. The optical delay dominates the bandwidth of RCE p-i-n PD when its active layer is thinner than several 10 nm. These three limiting factors must be considered exactly for design of ultra-high-speed RCE p-i-n PD.

In this paper we describe the recent development of a low-bandwidth wireless camera sensor network. We propose a simple, yet effective, network architecture which allows multiple cameras to be connected to the network and synchronize their communication schedules. Image compression of greater than 90% is performed at each node running on a local DSP coprocessor, resulting in nodes using 1/8th the energy compared to streaming uncompressed images. We briefly introduce the Fleck wireless node and the DSP/camera sensor, and then outline the network architecture and compression algorithm. The system is able to stream color QVGA images over the network to a base station at up to 2 frames per second. © 2007 IEEE.

In this paper, two different high bandwidth converter control strategies are discussed. One of the strategies is for voltage control and the other is for current control. The converter, in each of the cases, is equipped with an output passive filter. For the voltage controller, the converter is equipped with an LC filter, while an output has an LCL filter for current controller. The important aspect that has been discussed the paper is to avoid computation of unnecessary references using high-pass filters in the feedback loop. The stability of the overall system, including the high-pass filters, has been analyzed. The choice of filter parameters is crucial for achieving desirable system performance. In this paper, the bandwidth of achievable performance is presented through frequency (Bode) plot of the system gains. It has been illustrated that the proposed controllers are capable of tracking fundamental frequency components along with low-order harmonic components. Extensive simulation results are presented to validate the control concepts presented in the paper.

Multilevel converters can achieve an overall effective switch frequency multiplication and consequent ripple reduction through the cancellation of the lowest order switch frequency terms. This paper investigates the harmonic content and the frequency response of these multimodulator converters. It is shown that the transfer function of uniformly sampled modulators is a bessel function associated with the inherent sampling process. Naturally sampled modulators have a flat transfer function, but multiple switchings per switch cycle will occur unless the input is slew-rate limited. Lower sideband harmonics of the effective carrier frequency and, in uniform converters, harmonics of the input signal also limit the useful bandwidth. Observations about the effect of the number of converters, their type (naturally or uniformly sampled), and the ratio of modulating frequency and switch frequency are made

The paper introduces the design of robust current and voltage control algorithms for a grid-connected three-phase inverter which is interfaced to the grid through a high-bandwidth three-phase LCL filter. The algorithms are based on the state feedback control which have been designed in a systematic approach and improved by using oversampling to deal with the issues arising due to the high-bandwidth filter. An adaptive loop delay compensation method has also been adopted to minimize the adverse effects of loop delay in digital controller and to increase the robustness of the control algorithm in the presence of parameter variations. Simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

A nine level modular multilevel cascade converter (MMCC) based on four full bridge cells is shown driving a piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer at 71 and 39 kHz, in simulation and experimentally. The modular cells are small stackable PCBs, each with two fully integrated surface mount 22 V, 40 A MOSFET half-bridge converters, and include all control signal and power isolation. In this work, the bridges operate at 12 V and 384 kHz, to deliver a 96 Vpp 9 level waveform with an effective switching frequency of 3 MHz. A 9 pH air cored inductor forms a low pass filter in conjunction with the 3000 pF capacitance of the transducer load. Eight equally phase-displaced naturally sampled pulse width modulation (PWM) drive signals, along with the modulating sinusoid, are generated using phase accumulation techniques in a dedicated FPGA. Experimental time domain and FFT plots of the multilevel and transducer output waveforms are presented and discussed.

In this paper, a new technique is presented to increase the bandwidth for a single stage amplifier. Usually, -3 dB bandwidth of single stage amplifier is in few MHz. High output impedance and subsequent capacitive loading decrease the bandwidth of amplifier. The presented technique uses a load which itself acts as bandwidth enhancer. This high speed amplifier is designed on 180 nm CMOS technology, operates at 2.5 V power supply. This amplifier is succeeded by an output buffer to achieve a better linearity, high output swing and required output impedance for matching.

Bandwidth allocation for multimedia applications in case of network congestion and failure poses technical challenges due to bursty and delay sensitive nature of the applications. The growth of multimedia services on Internet and the development of agent technology have made us to investigate new techniques for resolving the bandwidth issues in multimedia communications. Agent technology is emerging as a flexible promising solution for network resource management and QoS (Quality of Service) control in a distributed environment. In this paper, we propose an adaptive bandwidth allocation scheme for multimedia applications by deploying the static and mobile agents. It is a run-time allocation scheme that functions at the network nodes. This technique adaptively finds an alternate patchup route for every congested/failed link and reallocates the bandwidth for the affected multimedia applications. The designed method has been tested (analytical and simulation)with various network sizes and conditions. The results are presented to assess the performance and effectiveness of the approach. This work also demonstrates some of the benefits of the agent based schemes in providing flexibility, adaptability, software reusability, and maintainability. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. A simple and efficient algorithm for the bandwidth reduction of sparse symmetric matrices is proposed. It involves column-row permutations and is well-suited to map onto the linear array topology of the SIMD architectures. The efficiency of the algorithm is compared with the other existing algorithms. The interconnectivity and the memory requirement of the linear array are discussed and the complexity of its layout area is derived. The parallel version of the algorithm mapped onto the linear array is then introduced and is explained with the help of an example. The optimality of the parallel algorithm is proved by deriving the time complexities of the algorithm on a single processor and the linear array.

Large external memory bandwidth requirement leads to increased system power dissipation and cost in video coding application. Majority of the external memory traffic in video encoder is due to reference data accesses. We describe a lossy reference frame compression technique that can be used in video coding with minimal impact on quality while significantly reducing power and bandwidth requirement. The low cost transformless compression technique uses lossy reference for motion estimation to reduce memory traffic, and lossless reference for motion compensation (MC) to avoid drift. Thus, it is compatible with all existing video standards. We calculate the quantization error bound and show that by storing quantization error separately, bandwidth overhead due to MC can be reduced significantly. The technique meets key requirements specific to the video encode application. 24-39% reduction in peak bandwidth and 23-31% reduction in total average power consumption are observed for IBBP sequences.
