We describe a user assisted technique for 3D stereo conversion from 2D images. Our approach exploits the geometric structure of perspective images including vanishing points. We allow a user to indicate lines, planes, and vanishing points in the input image, and directly employ these as constraints in an image warping framework to produce a stereo pair. By sidestepping explicit construction of a depth map, our approach is applicable to more general scenes and avoids potential artifacts of depth-image-based rendering. Our method is most suitable for scenes with large scale structures such as buildings.

Summer Saloon presented at Lion and Lamb an exhibition venue dedicated to showing current painting. My work "Screens" constructs rather than represents an existing architectural space. The painting investigates an experience of phenomenological depth distinct from the model of perspective depth.

Este trabajo esta orientado a resolver el problema de la caracterización de la copa de arboles frutales para la aplicacion localizada de fitosanitarios. Esta propuesta utiliza un mapa de profundidad (Depth image) y una imagen RGB combinadas (RGB-D), proporcionados por el sensor Kinect de Microsoft, para aplicar pesticidas de forma localizada. A través del mapa de profundidad se puede estimar la densidad de la copa y a partir de esta información determinar qué boquillas se deben abrir en cada momento. Se desarrollaron algoritmos implementados en Matlab que permiten además de la adquisición de las imágenes RGB-D, aplicar plaguicidas sólo a hojas y/o frutos según se desee. Estos algoritmos fueron implementados en un software que se comunica con el entorno de desarrollo "Kinect Windows SDK", encargado de extraer las imágenes desde el sensor Kinect. Por otra parte, para identificar hojas, se implementaron algoritmos de clasificación e identificación. Los algoritmos de clasificación utilizados fueron "Fuzzy C-Means con Gustafson Kessel" (FCM-GK) y "K-Means". Los centroides o prototipos de cada clase generados por FCM-GK fueron usados como semilla para K-Means, para acelerar la convergencia del algoritmo y mantener la coherencia temporal en los grupos generados por K-Means. Los algoritmos de clasificación fueron aplicados sobre las imágenes transformadas al espacio de color L*a*b*; específicamente se emplearon los canales a*, b* (canales cromáticos) con el fin de reducir el efecto de la luz sobre los colores. Los algoritmos de clasificación fueron configurados para buscar cuatro grupos: hojas, porosidad, frutas y tronco. Una vez que el clasificador genera los prototipos de los grupos, un clasificador denominado Máquina de Soporte Vectorial, que utiliza como núcleo una función Gaussiana base radial, identifica la clase de interés (hojas). La combinación de estos algoritmos ha mostrado bajos errores de clasificación, rendimiento del 4% de error en la identificación de hojas. Además, estos algoritmos de procesamiento de hasta 8.4 imágenes por segundo, lo que permite su aplicación en tiempo real. Los resultados demuestran la viabilidad de utilizar el sensor "Kinect" para determinar dónde y cuándo aplicar pesticidas. Por otra parte, también muestran que existen limitaciones en su uso, impuesta por las condiciones de luz. En otras palabras, es posible usar "Kinect" en exteriores, pero durante días nublados, temprano en la mañana o en la noche con iluminación artificial, o añadiendo un parasol en condiciones de luz intensa.

However, both types of cameras suffer from the lack of depth perception. A practical method for obtaining depth in computer vision is to project a known structured light pattern on the scene avoiding the problems and costs involved by stereo vision. This paper is focused on the idea of combining omnidirectional vision and structured light with the aim to provide 3D information about the scene. The resulting sensor is formed by a single catadioptric camera and an omnidirectional light projector. It is also discussed how this sensor can be used in robot navigation applications

Axial X-ray Computed tomography (CT) scanning provides a convenient means of recording the three-dimensional form of soil structure. The technique has been used for nearly two decades, but initial development has concentrated on qualitative description of images. More recently, increasing effort has been put into quantifying the geometry and topology of macropores likely to contribute to preferential now in soils. Here we describe a novel technique for tracing connected macropores in the CT scans. After object extraction, three-dimensional mathematical morphological filters are applied to quantify the reconstructed structure. These filters consist of sequences of so-called erosions and/or dilations of a 32-face structuring element to describe object distances and volumes of influence. The tracing and quantification methodologies were tested on a set of undisturbed soil cores collected in a Swiss pre-alpine meadow, where a new earthworm species (Aporrectodea nocturna) was accidentally introduced. Given the reduced number of samples analysed in this study, the results presented only illustrate the potential of the method to reconstruct and quantify macropores. Our results suggest that the introduction of the new species induced very limited chance to the soil structured for example, no difference in total macropore length or mean diameter was observed. However. in the zone colonised by, the new species. individual macropores tended to have a longer average length. be more vertical and be further apart at some depth. Overall, the approach proved well suited to the analysis of the three-dimensional architecture of macropores. It provides a framework for the analysis of complex structures, which are less satisfactorily observed and described using 2D imaging. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The applicability of image calibration to like-values in mapping water quality parameters from multitemporal images is explored, Six sets of water samples were collected at satellite overpasses over Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Australia. Analysis of these samples reveals that waters in this shallow bay are mostly TSS-dominated, even though they are occasionally dominated by chlorophyll as well. Three of the images were calibrated to a reference image based on invariant targets. Predictive models constructed from the reference image were applied to estimating total suspended sediment (TSS) and Secchi depth from another image at a discrepancy of around 35 percent. Application of the predictive model for TSS concentration to another image acquired at a time of different water types resulted in a discrepancy of 152 percent. Therefore, image calibration to like-values could be used to reliably map certain water quality parameters from multitemporal TM images so long as the water type under study remains unchanged. This method is limited in that the mapped results could be rather inaccurate if the water type under study has changed considerably. Thus, the approach needs to be refined in shallow water from multitemporal satellite imagery.

We report in this paper the recent advances we obtained in optimizing a color image sensor based on the laser-scanned-photodiode (LSP) technique. A novel device structure based on a a-SiC:H/a-Si:H pin/pin tandem structure has been tested for a proper color separation process that takes advantage on the different filtering properties due to the different light penetration depth at different wavelengths a-SM and a-SiC:H. While the green and the red images give, in comparison with previous tested structures, a weak response, this structure shows a very good recognition of blue color under reverse bias, leaving a good margin for future device optimization in order to achieve a complete and satisfactory RGB image mapping. Experimental results about the spectral collection efficiency are presented and discussed from the point of view of the color sensor applications. The physics behind the device functioning is explained by recurring to a numerical simulation of the internal electrical configuration of the device.

In this paper we face the problem of positioning a camera attached to the end-effector of a robotic manipulator so that it gets parallel to a planar object. Such problem has been treated for a long time in visual servoing. Our approach is based on linking to the camera several laser pointers so that its configuration is aimed to produce a suitable set of visual features. The aim of using structured light is not only for easing the image processing and to allow low-textured objects to be treated, but also for producing a control scheme with nice properties like decoupling, stability, well conditioning and good camera trajectory

A practical activity designed to introduce wavefront coding techniques as a method to extend the depth of field in optical systems is presented. The activity is suitable for advanced undergraduate students since it combines different topics in optical engineering such as optical system design, aberration theory, Fourier optics, and digital image processing. This paper provides the theoretical background and technical information for performing the experiment. The proposed activity requires students able to develop a wide range of skills since they are expected to deal with optical components, including spatial light modulators, and develop scripts to perform some calculations.

The tourism image is an element that conditions the competitiveness of tourism destinations by making them stand out in the minds of tourists. In this context, marketers of tourism destinations endeavour to create an induced image based on their identity and distinctive characteristics.A number of authors have also recognized the complexity of tourism destinations and the need for coordination and cooperation among all tourism agents, in order to supply a satisfactory tourist product and be competitive in the tourism market. Therefore, tourism agents at the destination need to develop and integrate strategic marketing plans.The aim of this paper is to determine how cities of similar cultures use their resources with the purpose of developing a distinctive induced tourism image to attract tourists and the extent of coordination and cooperation among the various tourism agents of a destination in the process of induced image creation.In order to accomplish these aims, a comparative analysis of the induced image of two cultural cities is presented, Girona (Spain) and Perpignan (France). The induced image is assessed through the content analysis of promotional brochures and the extent of cooperation with in-depth interviews of the main tourism agents of these destinations.Despite the similarities of both cities in terms of tourism resources, results show the use of different attributes to configure the induced image of each destination, as well as a different configuration of the network of tourism agents that participate in the process of induced image creation

The Shadow Moiré fringe patterns are level lines of equal depth generated by interference between a master grid and its shadow projected on the surface. In simplistic approach, the minimum error is about the order of the master grid pitch, that is, always larger than 0,1 mm, resulting in an experimental technique of low precision. The use of a phase shift increases the accuracy of the Shadow Moiré technique. The current work uses the phase shifting method to determine the surfaces three-dimensional shape using isothamic fringe patterns and digital image processing. The current study presents the method and applies it to images obtained by simulation for error evaluation, as well as to a buckled plate, obtaining excellent results. The method hands itself particularly useful to decrease the errors in the interpretation of the Moiré fringes that can adversely affect the calculations of displacements in pieces containing many concave and convex regions in relatively small areas.
