What is it like to have a medical condition that few people have ever heard about? How does it feel to have to question whether daily physical activities are dangerous for you, whilst you watch your friends enjoy those activities without a care? Can you imagine that you need to have a complicated heart surgery, with risks such as paralysis or death? Or even imagine facing the painful recovery period and scars after such a surgery? Then imagine that you are a child or teenager dealing with this medical condition when all your friends are simply occupied with school and normal life. Now consider that surgery has been undertaken to extend your lifespan, but the operation is so new that the long-term outcomes are just not known? All you really know is that you might have ‘surgical repairs’ to your heart and symptoms may be relieved or managed by medications or cardiac devices, but you are never going to be cured. What if you had already experienced painful, frightening, lonely and tedious hospitalisations and you were forced to put your life on hold to re-enter that situation, time and time again. This may be your life, as a Congenital Heart Disease or CHD patient. How do such patients cope and in many cases even thrive? This chapter will review current international literature regarding the medical and personal impact of CHD. Our qualitative study of the perspectives of young CHD patients and their parents contributes to the Australian story of CHD, as well as highlighting the potential for CHD related adversity to promote personal development.

The link between video game play and aggression is an important issue as video games The link between video game play and aggression is an important issue as video games are the fastest growing form of entertainment in the world. Past research on this association has been focused primarily on the link between video game violence and aggression; however, this research has confounded the effect of video game violence versus competition on aggression. The main goal of the current dissertation, therefore, was to examine the short- and long-term associations between competitive video game play and aggression. In addition, the longitudinal work on this association to date has been limited to adolescent samples, but not young adults. Thus, the second goal of the dissertation research was to investigate whether video game play predicts aggression in the long-term among young adults in addition to adolescents. To address these goals, three studies were conducted. Study 1 consisted of a series of experiments examining the short-term effect of video game violence versus competition on aggression. Study 2 examined the long-term association between competitive video game play and aggression among adolescents, and Study 3 examined this long-term link among young adults, in addition to adolescents. Taken together, the results of the three dissertation studies converged to suggest that video game competition, rather than violence, may be a stronger predictor of aggression in both the short- and long-term. Overall, the current research represents an important advance in our understanding of the association between video game play and aggression, and leads to a new direction in the video game and aggression literature. are the fastest growing form of entertainment in the world. Background: The impact of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) on teenagers’ and young adults’ participation is not well documented. This article aims to synthesize the current knowledge on social participation, which is the performance of an individual in realizing his daily activities and social roles within its life environment. Strategies and interventions to support youths (15-25 years old) with DCD were also synthesized. Methods: A scoping review interrogating three databases and using ‘snowballing techniques’ was performed to identify both scientific and grey literature published between 2004 and 2014. Over 1000 documents were screened and 57 were read in full; 28 met inclusion criteria. A charting form based on 12 life habits described in the Disability Creation Process (DCP) and developed by two reviewers was used to extract data and report the results. Results: All life habits were reported to be affected for teenagers and young adults with DCD, with education and interpersonal relationships being the most frequently discussed. During adolescence and adulthood, new tasks and subsequent difficulties emerge, such as driving. Mental health difficulties emerged as a key theme. Few strategies and interventions were described to support social participation of youths with DCD. Conclusion: Many life habits are challenging for youths with DCD, but few evidence-based strategies and interventions have been designed to help them to increase their social participation.

Epidemiological data link adolescent cannabis use to psychosis and schizophrenia, but its contribution to schizophrenia neuropathology remains controversial. First-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients show regional cerebral grey- and white-matter changes as well as a distinct pattern of regional grey-matter loss in the vermis of the cerebellum. The cerebellum possesses a high density of cannabinoid type 1 receptors involved in the neuronal diversification of the developing brain. Cannabis abuse may interfere with this process during adolescent brain maturation leading to ‘schizophrenia-like’ cerebellar pathology. Magnetic resonance imaging and cortical pattern matching techniques were used to investigate cerebellar grey and white matter in FES patients with and without a history of cannabis use and non-psychiatric cannabis users. In the latter group we found lifetime dose-dependent regional reduction of grey matter in the right cerebellar lobules and a tendency for more profound grey-matter reduction in lobule III with younger age at onset of cannabis use. The overall regional grey-matter differences in cannabis users were within the normal variability of grey-matter distribution. By contrast, FES subjects had lower total cerebellar grey-matter : total cerebellar volume ratio and marked grey-matter loss in the vermis, pedunculi, flocculi and lobules compared to pair-wise matched healthy control subjects. This pattern and degree of grey-matter loss did not differ from age-matched FES subjects with comorbid cannabis use. Our findings indicate small dose-dependent effects of juvenile cannabis use on cerebellar neuropathology but no evidence of an additional effect of cannabis use on FES cerebellar grey-matter pathology.

Introduction and Aims. The rate of alcohol-related emergency department (ED) presentations in young people has increased dramatically in recent decades. Injuries are the most common type of youth alcohol-related ED presentation, yet little is known about these injuries in young people. This paper describes the characteristics of alcohol-related ED injury presentations in young people over a 13-year period and determines if they differ by gender and/or age group (adolescents: 12–17 years; young adults: 18–24 years). Design and Method. The Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit (QISU) database collects injury surveillance data at triage in participating EDs throughout Queensland, Australia. A total of 4667 cases of alcohol-related injuries in young people (aged 12–24 years) were identified in the QISU database between January 1999 and December 2011, using an injury surveillance code and nursing triage text-based search strategy. Results. Overall, young people accounted for 38% of all QISU alcohol-related ED injury presentations in patients aged 12 years or over. The majority of young adults presented with injuries due to violence and falls, whereas adolescents presented due to self-harm or intoxication without other injury. Males presented with injuries due to violence, whereas females presented with alcohol-related self-harm and intoxication. Discussion and Conclusions. There is a need for more effective ways of identifying the degree of alcohol involvement in injuries among young people presenting to EDs.

Objective: This study examined associations of asthma and food allergy with symptoms of depression and anxiety at 14 and 21 years of age to determine whether condition-specific associations exist. Methods: Data come from 4972 adolescents in the Mater University Study of Pregnancy. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were assessed using the Youth Self-Report and Young Adult Self-Report. Results: Condition-specific associations between asthma and depression, OR=1.37 [1.12, 1.67] and between food allergy and anxiety, OR=1.26 [1.04, 1.76] were found during adolescence, but not in young adulthood. Whereas asthma was associated with resolved depression, OR=1.70 [1.13, 2.55], food allergy was associated with persistent anxiety, OR=1.26 [1.01, 1.59]. Conclusions: In adolescents, asthma is associated with an increased risk of clinically relevant symptoms of depression and food allergy with and increased risk of clinically relevant symptoms of anxiety. Future research is needed to clarify directionality and mechanisms explaining these relationships. Health professionals should be aware of the increased risk of mental health problems in adolescents with asthma or food allergy.

In recent reports, adolescents and young adults (AYA) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have had a better outcome with pediatric treatment than with adult protocols. ALL can be classified into biologic subgroups according to immunophenotype and cytogenetics, with different clinical characteristics and outcome. The proportions of the subgroups are different in children and adults. ALL subtypes in AYA patients are less well characterized. In this study, the treatment and outcome of ALL in AYA patients aged 10-25 years in Finland on pediatric and adult protocols was retrospectively analyzed. In total, 245 patients were included. The proportions of biologic subgroups in different age groups were determined. Patients with initially normal or failed karyotype were examined with oligonucleotide microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH). Also deletions and instability of chromosome 9p were screened in ALL patients. In addition, patients with other hematologic malignancies were screened for 9p instability. aCGH data were also used to determine a gene set that classifies AYA patients at diagnosis according to their risk of relapse. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to assess the value of the set of genes as prognostic classifiers. The 5-year event-free survival of AYA patients treated with pediatric or adult protocols was 67% and 60% (p=0.30), respectively. White blood cell count larger than 100x109/l was associated with poor prognosis. Patients treated with pediatric protocols and assigned to an intermediate-risk group fared significantly better than those of the pediatric high-risk or adult treatment groups. Deletions of 9p were detected in 46% of AYA ALL patients. The chromosomal region 9p21.3 was always affected, and the CDKN2A gene was always deleted. In about 15% of AYA patients, the 9p21.3 deletion was smaller than 200 kb in size, and therefore, probably undetectable with conventional methods. Deletion of 9p was the most common aberration of AYA ALL patients with initially normal karyotype. Instability of 9p, defined as multiple separate areas of copy number loss or homozygous loss within a larger heterozygous area in 9p, was detected in 19% (n=27) of ALL patients. This abnormality was restricted to ALL; none of the patients with other hematologic malignancies had the aberration. The prognostic model identification procedure resulted in a model of four genes: BAK1, CDKN2B, GSTM1, and MT1F. The copy number profile combinations of these genes differentiated between AYA ALL patients at diagnosis depending on their risk of relapse. Deletions of CDKN2B and BAK1 in combination with amplification of GSTM1 and MT1F were associated with a higher probability of relapse. Unlike all previous studies, we found that the outcome of AYA patients with ALL treated using pediatric or adult therapeutic protocols was comparable. The success of adult ALL therapy emphasizes the benefit of referral of patients to academic centers and adherence to research protocols. 9p deletions and instability are common features of ALL and may act together with oncogene-activating translocations in leukemogenesis. New and more sensitive methods of molecular cytogenetics can reveal previously cryptic genetic aberrations with an important role in leukemic development and prognosis and that may be potential targets of therapy. aCGH also provides a viable approach for model design aiming at evaluation of risk of relapse in ALL.
