Monte Carlo simulations of liquid formamide, N-methylformamide (MF), and N, N-dimethytformamide (DMF) have been performed in the isothermal and isobaric ensemble at 298 K and 1 atm, aiming to investigate the C-H O and N-H O hydrogen bonds. The interaction energy was calculated using the classical 6-12 Lennard-Jones pairwise potential plus a Coulomb term on a rigid six-site molecular model with the potential parameters being optimized in this work. Theoretical values obtained for heat of vaporization and liquid densities are in good agreement with the experimental data. The radial distribution function [RDF, g(r)] obtained compare well with R-X diffraction data available. The RDF and molecular mechanics (MM2) minimization show that the C-H O interaction has a significant role in the structure of the three liquids. These results are supported by ab initio calculations. This interaction is particularly important in the structure of MF. The intensity of the N - H O hydrogen bond is greater in the MF than formamide. This could explain some anomalous properties verified in MF. 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The nuclear incoherent 0 photoproduction cross section from 12C is evaluated at forward angles in the 4.0 to 6.0 GeV energy range using the multicollisional intranuclear cascade model MCMC. The model incorporates some improvements in comparison with previous versions associated with the momentum distribution (MD) for light nuclei - extracted from the available (e,e p) data - as well as the evaluation of the shadowing effects during the photo-nucleus interaction. The final results of the single and double differential cross sections at forward angles are very sensitive to the MD parameterizations due to the Pauli principle, which largely suppresses the cross sections for low momentum transfer. The attenuation of the nuclear cross section due to pion - nucleus final state interactions is approximately 40% (without nuclear shadowing), which is in nice agreement with the predictions from the Glauber model. The single and double 0 differential cross sections are presented for possible applications for the interpretation of the inelastic background in the PrimEx experiment at the Jefferson Laboratory. 2007 American Institute of Physics.

The synthesis of a novel bicyclo-thymidine nucleoside bearing an ester functionality at C(6') (bc(alpha-alk)-nucleosides) is reported. This nucleoside was incorporated into oligodeoxynucleotides via solid phase phosphoramidite chemistry, and the ester moiety was post-synthetically converted to an amide or a carboxy group, or was left unchanged. Thermal melting data (T-m) with complementary DNA and RNA were collected and compared to natural DNA and to bc- and bc(ox)-DNA. It was found that single incorporations of bc(alpha-alk)-nucleosides in DNA duplexes were destabilizing by 0.5 to 2.5 degrees C/mod, whereas two consecutive bc(alpha-alk)-residues were less destabilizing, and in some cases even stabilizing by 0.5 degrees C/mod. In duplexes with complementary RNA, isolated bc(alpha-alk)-residues destabilized the duplex by -1.0 to -4.0 degrees C/mod, depending on the chemical nature of the substituent, whereas two consecutive modifications were only destabilizing by 0.3-1.0 degrees C/mod. The pairing selectivity was similar to that of unmodified or bc-DNA.

A baciloscopia o principal mtodo diagnstico da tuberculose (TB) em razo do seu baixo custo, rapidez e facilidade de execuo. Porm sua sensibilidade baixa, principalmente nas formas paucibacilares da doena. Nesse sentido, novas metodologias que resultem no aumento da sensibilidade da baciloscopia tornam-se absolutamente necessrias. Neste estudo, nos propusemos a aprimorar e padronizar o sistema de filtrao BacFil e avaliar sua performance e acurcia em amostras paucibacilares (lavado broncoalveolar). Para alcanar esses objetivos desenvolvemos o estudo em duas fases. Na primeira fase, foram realizados ensaios para definir: 1) utilizao de membranas brancas para visualizao de BAAR corados por Auramina-O; 2) aumento do volume de NALC, utilizao de prolas de vidro no processo de digesto das amostras e mudana no sistema do suporte do pr-filtro; 3) meios de fixao da membrana de filtrao na lmina de microscopia; 4) limite de deteco da tcnica; 5) aumento do volume de NaOCl e a influncia desse aumento na visualizao de BAAR na membrana. Verificou-se que: a membrana de policarbonato branca tem a mesma eficincia da membrana de policarbonato preta na visualizao de BAAR fluorescentes; o mtodo modificado utilizando maior concentrao de NALC, prolas de vidro e sistema de pr-filtro baseado em orifcios obteve 98% de passagem das amostras pelo sistema; a melhor forma de fixao da membrana na lmina foi obtida por intermdio da utilizao de fita dupla face; o limite de deteco da tcnica de filtrao utilizando o sistema BacFil verso 6.0 foi de 2 a 9 BAAR por mililitro de suspenso bacteriana com D.O de 0,250 0,01 a 625nm; o aumento da concentrao de NaOCl para 10% ajuda na passagem de um maior volume de amostra pelo sistema, porm ocasiona a diminuio da quantidade BAAR na membrana de filtrao aps o perodo necessrio para todo o processo. Na segunda fase foi avaliado acurcia da tcnica padronizada em 101 amostras de lavado broncoalveolar (LBA) de pacientes com suspeita de TB provenientes do Hospital Universitrio Cassiano Antnio de Moraes. Observou-se que a sensibilidade da tcnica de filtrao (BacFil verso 6.0) foi de 76% e especificidade de 95%. A sensibilidade obtida foi significativamente maior do que a observada na baciloscopia aps centrifugao que foi de 59% (p = 0,001). No entanto, constatou-se uma diminuio de especificidade na tcnica de filtrao (95%) em relao a tcnica de 8 centrifugao (99%). Conclumos que as modificaes realizadas nos sistema de filtrao permitiu sanar os problemas tcnicos apresentados nas verses anteriores e aumentar a sensibilidade da baciloscopia de amostras paucibacilares (lavado broncoalveolar) para o diagnstico da TB pulmonar.

A Mitomicina C est entre uma variedade de agentes quimioteraputicos intravesicais actualmente disponveis para o tratamento do carcinoma superficial da bexiga. Cerca de9% destes doentes desenvolve reaces adversas cutneas, geralmente dermites de contacto, localizadas nas mos, ps, genitais, ou erupes mais disseminadas. Descrevem-se 6 casos de dermite de contacto alrgica Mitomicina C, observados entre Junho/2004 e Maro/2005,emcinco doentes do sexo masculino e umdo sexo feminino, com uma idade mdia de 70 anos.

This manual describes how to use the Iowa Bridge Backwater software. It also documents the methods and equations used for the calculations. The main body describes how to use the software and the appendices cover technical aspects. The Bridge Backwater software performs 5 main tasks: Design Discharge Estimation; Stream Rating Curves; Floodway Encroachment; Bridge Backwater; and Bridge Scour. The intent of this program is to provide a simplified method for analysis of bridge backwater for rural structures located in areas with low flood damage potential. The software is written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. It will run under Windows 95 or newer versions (i.e. Windows 98, NT, 2000, XP and later).

We report herein the synthesis of aryl beta-N-acetylglucosaminides containing azido, amino and acetamido groups at C-6 as potential antimicrobial agents. It was expected that these compounds could interfere with the biosynthesis and/or biotransformation of N-acetylglucosamine in fungi and bacteria. None of the compounds showed antimicrobial activity against bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), filamentous fungus (Aspergillus niger) and yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisae, Candida albicans and Candida tropicallis), at the concentration of 1 mg/mL in agar diffusion assay.
