Seven L-phenylalanine based alkyl (monopolar) and alkanediyl (bipolar) derivatives are synthesized; while the bipolar urethane amides form gels and show strong adhesive properties, the monopolar analogues form fibrous nanoscopic cloth-like tapes.

Synthetic routes leading to 12 L-phenylalanine based mono- and bipolar derivatives (1-12) and an in-depth study of their structure-property relationship with respect to gelation have been presented. These include monopolar systems such as N-[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]-L-phenylalanine-N-alkylamides and the corresponding bipolar derivatives with flexible and rigid spacers such as with 1,12-diaminododecane and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane, respectively. The two ends of the latter have been functionalized with N-[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]-L-phenylalanine units via amide connection. Another bipolar molecule was synthesized in which the middle portion of the hydrocarbon segment contained polymerizable diacetylene unit. To ascertain the role of the presence of urethane linkages in the gelator molecule protected L-phenylalanine derivatives were also synthesized in which the (benzyloxy)carbonyl group has been replaced with (tert-butyloxy)carbonyl, acetyl, and benzoyl groups, respectively. Upon completion of the synthesis and adequate characterization of the newly described molecules, we examined the aggregation and gelation properties of each of them in a number of solvents and their mixtures. Optical microscopy and electron microscopy further characterized the systems that formed gels. Few representative systems, which showed excellent gelation behavior was, further examined by FT-IR, calorimetric, and powder X-ray diffraction studies. To explain the possible reasons for gelation, the results of molecular modeling and energy-minimization studies were also included. Taken together these results demonstrate the importance of the presence of (benzyloxy)carbonyl unit, urethane and secondary amide linkages, chiral purities of the headgroup and the length of the alkyl chain of the hydrophobic segment as critical determinants toward effective gelation.

Synthetically useful N-Fmoc amino-alkyl isothiocyanates have been described, starting from protected amino acids. These compounds have been synthesized in excellent yields by thiocarbonylation of the monoprotected 1,2-diamines with CS2/TEA/p-TsCl, isolated as stable solids, and completely characterized. The procedure has been extended to the synthesis of amino alkyl isothiocyanates from Boc- and Z-protected amino acids as well. The utility of these isothiocyanates for peptidomimetics synthesis has been demonstrated by employing them in the preparation of a series of dithioureidopeptide esters. Boc-Gly-OH and Boc-Phe-OH derived isothiocyanates 9a and 9c have been obtained as single crystals and their structures solved through X-ray diffraction. They belong to the orthorhombic crystal system, and have a single molecule in the asymmetric unit (Z′ = 1). 9a crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group Pbca, while 9c crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group P212121.

The diffusion of water in a phase-separated biodegradable poly(ester urethane) shape-memory polymer with poly(E-caprolactone) (PCL) as the soft segment was investigated using time-resolved FTIR-ATR. On the basis of the band fitting and water ordering in drawn films, the broad water band in the 3800-2800 cm(-1) region was decomposed into four bands located at 3620, 3510, 3400, and 3260 cm(-1), and the first two components at 3620 and 35 10 cm(-1) were assigned to the vibrations of antisymmetric and symmetric stretching of water hydrogen bonded with the C=O group of the soft segment. The other two were associated with water bonded to the urethane hard segments in the forms of N-H:O-H:O=C bridge hydrogen bond and double hydrogen bonds with two C=O groups, respectively. Furthermore, band fitting and two-dimensional correlation analyses revealed that in the diffusion process, water first diffuses into the continuous soft-rich PCL phase and then into the hard-rich urethane domains, forming double hydrogen bonds with two C=O groups prior to the bridge hydrogen bond in the form of N-H:O-H:O=C.

The hydrogen bonding and crystallization of a biodegradable poly(ester urethane) copolymer based on poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) as the soft segment were investigated by FTIR. On slow cooling from melt, the onset and the progress of the crystallization of the urethane hard segments were correlated to the position, width, and relative intensity of the hydrogen-bonded N-H stretching band. The interconversion between the "free" and hydrogen-bonded N-H and C=O groups in the urethane units in the process was also revealed by 2D correlation analysis of the FTIR data. The crystallization of the PLLA soft segments was monitored by the ester C=O stretching and the skeletal vibrations. It was revealed that the PLLA crystallization was restricted by the phase separation and the urethane crystallization, and at cooling rates of 10 degrees C/min or higher, the crystallization of the PLLA soft segments was prohibited.

The cure characteristics and mechanical properties of short nylon fiber- styrene /whole tyre reclaim (SBR/WTR) composites with and without an interfacial bonding agent based on 4,4 diphenyl methane diisocyanate and polyethylene glycol (MDI/PEG) have been studied. An 80:40 blend of SBR/ WTR reinforced with 20 phr of short nylon fiber has been selected and the MDI/ PEG ratio has been changed from 0.67:1 to 2:1. The minimum and maximum torques increased with isocyanate concentration. The scorch time and cure time showed an initial reduction. The cure rate showed an initial improvement. Tensile strength, tear strength and abrasion resistance increased with MDI/PEG ratio, these values were higher in longitudinal direction. Resilience and compression set increased with isocyanate concentration.

Four aliphatic thermoplastic poly(ester-urethane)s (PEUs) with similar molecular weights but varying polyesters molecular weight (534-1488 g/mol) were prepared from polyester diols, obtained by melt condensation of Azelaic acid and 1,9-Nonanediol, and 1,7-heptamethylene di-isocyanate (HPMDI) all sourced from vegetable oil feedstock. The thermal, and mechanical properties, and crystal structure of PEUs were investigated using DSC, TGA, DMA, tensile analysis and WAXD. For sufficiently long polyester chain, WAXD data indicated no hydrogen bonds polyethylene (PE)-like crystalline packing and for short polyester chains, small crystal domains with significant H-bonded polyamide (PA)-like packing. Crystallinity decreased with decreasing polyester molecular weights. The polymorphism of PEUs and consequently their melting characteristics were found to be largely controlled by polyester segment length. TGA of the PEUs indicated improved thermal stability with decreasing polyester chain length, suggesting a stabilization effect by urethane groups. Mechanical properties investigated by DMA and tensile analysis were found to scale predictably with the overall crystallinity of PEUs. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The synthesis of a poly(azo)urethane by fixing CO2 in bis-epoxide followed by a polymerization reaction with an azodiamine is presented. Since isocyanate is not used in the process, it is termed clean method and the polymers obtained are named NIPUs (non-isocyanate polyurethanes). Langmuir films were formed at the air-water interface and were characterized by surface pressure vs mean molecular area per met unit (Pi-A) isotherms. The Langmuir monolayers were further studied by running stability tests and cycles of compression/expansion (possible hysteresis) and by varying the compression speed of the monolayer formation, the subphase temperature, and the solvents used to prepare the spreading polymer solutions. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique was used to fabricate ultrathin films of a particular polymer (PAzoU). It is possible to grow homogeneous LB films of up to 15 layers as monitored using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Higher number of layers can be deposited when PAzoU is mixed with stearic acid, producing mixed LB films. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopy and Raman scattering showed that the materials do not interact chemically in the mixed LB films. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) and micro-Raman technique (optical microscopy coupled to Raman spectrograph) revealed that mixed LB films present a phase separation distinguishable at micrometer or nanometer scale. Finally, mixed and neat LB films were successfully characterized using impedance spectroscopy at different temperatures, a property that may lead to future application as temperature sensors. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to correlate the data.

Objective: Mechanical properties of the acrylic resins used for denture fabrication may be influenced by water and temperature. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermocycling on the flexural and impact strength of a high-impact (Lucitone 199) and a urethane-based denture material (Eclipse).Materials and methods: Flexural strength (64 x 10 x 3.3 mm) and impact strength (60 x 6 x 4 mm) specimens were made following the manufacturers' instructions and assigned to two groups (n = 10): control (C) - not thermocycled - and T - thermocycled (5000 cycles between 5 and 55 degrees C). Specimens were submitted to three-point bending and Charpy impact tests.Results: Flexural strength (MPa) and impact strength (kJ/m(2)) data were analysed with two-way ANOVA (p = 0.05). The flexural strength of material Eclipse (C, 136.5; T, 130.7) was significantly higher than that of resin Lucitone 550 (C, 99.4; T, 90.1). Material Eclipse exhibited significantly higher impact strength (C, 6.9; T, 5.3) than the resin Lucitone 550 (C, 3.5; T, 3.0). For both materials, a significant decrease in flexural and impact strengths was observed when the specimens were thermocycled.Conclusion: Flexural and impact strengths were higher for Eclipse than for Lucitone 550, in both groups. Thermocycling decreased the flexural and impact strengths of Eclipse and Lucitone 550.

A series of segmented poly(urethane-urea)s containing 1,3,5 triazine in the hard block and hexamethylene spacers in the soft block was prepared. The hard to soft segment ratio was varied systematically, to afford a series of polymers in which the chromophore concentration varied from 4.2% to 18.1%. Although triazine emission is located in the UV region, the films with higher content of the chromophore emitted a visible blue light (425 nm) when excited at the very red-edge of the absorption band. The photophysical properties of the materials were strongly dependent on the relative amount of triazine moieties along the main chain. Isolated moieties emit in copolymers with small amount of triazine groups, indicating that even though in solid state, these moieties tend to be apart. Two photophysical consequences were observed when the amount of triazine increases: there is some energy transfer process involving isolated moieties with consequent decrease of the lifetime and an additional red-edge emission attributed to aggregated lumophores. The mono-exponential decay observed for the isolated form is substituted by a bi-exponential decay of the aggregated species. The materials were not strong emitters, but since the N-containing triazine moieties are good electron transport groups, the polymers have potential application as electron transport enhancers in various applications. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Rodents are most useful models to study physiological and pathophysiological processes in early development, because they are born in a relatively immature state. However, only few techniques are available to monitor non-invasively heart frequency and respiratory rate in neonatal rodents without restraining or hindering access to the animal. Here we describe experimental procedures that allow monitoring of heart frequency by electrocardiography (ECG) and breathing rate with a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) element without hindering access to the animal. These techniques can be easily installed and are used in the present study in unrestrained awake and anesthetized neonatal C57/Bl6 mice and Wistar rats between postnatal day 0 and 7. In line with previous reports from awake rodents we demonstrate that heart rate in rats and mice increases during the first postnatal week. Respiratory frequency did not differ between both species, but heart rate was significantly higher in mice than in rats. Further our data indicate that urethane, an agent that is widely used for anesthesia, induces a hypoventilation in neonates whilst heart rate remains unaffected at a dose of 1 g per kg body weight. Of note, hypoventilation induced by urethane was not detected in rats at postnatal 0/1. To verify the detected hypoventilation we performed blood gas analyses. We detected a respiratory acidosis reflected by a lower pH and elevated level in CO2 tension (pCO2) in both species upon urethane treatment. Furthermore we found that metabolism of urethane is different in P0/1 mice and rats and between P0/1 and P6/7 in both species. Our findings underline the usefulness of monitoring basic cardio-respiratory parameters in neonates during anesthesia. In addition our study gives information on developmental changes in heart and breathing frequency in newborn mice and rats and the effects of urethane in both species during the first postnatal week.
