The currentvoltage characteristics of Au/n-GaAs Schottky diodes grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy on Ge substrates were determined in the temperature range 80300 K. The zero-bias barrier height for current transport decreases and the ideality factor increases at low temperatures. The ideality factor was found to show the T0 effect and a higher characteristic energy. The excellent matching between the homogeneous barrier height and the effective barrier height was observed and infer good quality of the GaAs film. No generationrecombination current due to deep levels arising during the GaAs/Ge heteroepitaxy was observed in this study. The value of the Richardson constant was found to be 7.04 A K?2 cm?2, which is close to the value used for the determination of the zero-bias barrier height.

Optically clear glasses in the ZnO-Bi2O3-B2O3 (ZBBO) system were fabricated via the conventional melt-quenching technique. Dielectric constant and loss measurements carried out on ZBBO glasses unraveled nearly frequency (1 kHz-10 MHz)-independent dielectric characteristics associated with significantly low loss (D = 0.004). However, weak temperature response was found with temperature coefficient of dielectric constant 18 +/- 4 ppm A degrees C-1 in the 35-250 A degrees C temperature range. The conduction and relaxation phenomena were rationalized using universal AC conductivity power law and modulus formalism respectively. The activation energy for relaxation determined using imaginary parts of modulus peaks was 2.54 eV which was close to that of the DC conduction implying the involvement of similar energy barriers in both the processes. Stretched and power exponents were temperature dependent. The relaxation and conduction in these glasses were attributed to the hoping and migration of Bi3+ cations in their own and different local environment.

Surface-architecture-controlled ZnO nanowires were grown using a vapor transport method on various ZnO buffer film coated c-plane sapphire substrates with or without Au catalysts. The ZnO nanowires that were grown showed two different types of geometric properties: corrugated ZnO nanowires having a relatively smaller diameter and a strong deep-level emission photoluminescence (PL) peak and smooth ZnO nanowires having a relatively larger diameter and a weak deep-level emission PL peak. The surface morphology and size-dependent tunable electronic transport properties of the ZnO nanowires were characterized using a nanowire field effect transistor (FET) device structure. The FETs made from smooth ZnO nanowires with a larger diameter exhibited negative threshold voltages, indicating n-channel depletion-mode behavior, whereas those made from corrugated ZnO nanowires with a smaller diameter had positive threshold voltages, indicating n-channel enhancement-mode behavior.

Magneto-transport measurements have been carried out on a Si heavily delta-doped In0.52Al0.48As/In(0.53)G(0.47)As single quantum well in the temperature range between 1.5 and 60 K under magnetic field up to 10 T. We studied the Shubnikov-de Haas(SdH) effect and the Hall effect for the In0.52Al0.48As/In(0.53)G(0.47)As single quantum well occupied by two subbands, and have obtained the electron concentration, mobility, effective mass and energy levels respectively. The electron concentrations of the two subbands derived from mobility spectrum combined with multi-carrier fitting analysis are well consistent with the result from the SdH oscillation. From fast Fourier transform analysis for d(2)rho/dB(2)-1/B, it is observed that there is a frequency of f(1)-f(2) insensitive to the temperature, besides the frequencies f(1), f(2) for the two subbands and the frequency doubling 2f(1), both dependent on the temperature. This is because That the electrons occupying the two different subbands almost have the same effective mass in the quantum well and the magneto-intersubband scattering between the two subbands is strong.

We report on charge transport and density of trap states (trap DOS) in ambipolar diketopyrrolopyrrole-benzothiadiazole copolymer thin-film transistors. This semiconductor possesses high electron and hole field-effect mobilities of up to 0.6 cm 2/V-s. Temperature and gate-bias dependent field-effect mobility measurements are employed to extract the activation energies and trap DOS to understand its unique high mobility balanced ambipolar charge transport properties. The symmetry between the electron and hole transport characteristics, parameters and activation energies is remarkable. We believe that our work is the first charge transport study of an ambipolar organic/polymer based field-effect transistor with room temperature mobility higher than 0.1 cm 2/V-s in both electrons and holes.

In this paper, we report on the device physics and charge transport characteristics of high-mobility dual-gated polymer thin-film transistors with active semiconductor layers consisting of thiophene flanked DPP with thienylene-vinylene-thienylene (PDPP-TVT) alternating copolymers. Room temperature mobilities in these devices are high and can exceed 2 cm2 V-1 s-1. Steady-state and non-quasi-static measurements have been performed to extract key transport parameters and velocity distributions of charge carriers in this copolymer. Charge transport in this polymer semiconductor can be explained using a Multiple-Trap-and-Release or Monroe-type model. We also compare the activation energy vs. field-effect mobility in a few important polymer semiconductors to gain a better understanding of transport of DPP systems and make appropriate comparisons.

We employ nanoindentation coupled with electrical contact resistance measurements for simultaneous characterization of the electrical and mechanical behaviors of a cellular assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Experimental results reveal two different responses that correspond to relatively dense and porous regions of the cellular structure. Distinct nonlinear electron transport characteristics are observed, which mainly originate from diffusive conductance in the CNT structure. In the denser region, differential conductance shows asymmetric minima at lower bias, implying that conductivity mainly results from bulk tunneling. However, the porous regions show insignificant differential conduction as opposed to the denser region.

The transport of reactive solutes through fractured porous formations has been analyzed. The transport through the porous block is represented by a general multiprocess nonequilibrium equation (MPNE), which, for the fracture, is represented by an advection-dispersion equation with linear equilibrium sorption and first-order transformation. An implicit finite-difference technique has been used to solve the two coupled equations. The transport characteristics have been analyzed in terms of zeroth, first, and second temporal moments of the solute in the fracture. The solute behavior for fractured impermeable and fractured permeable formations are first compared and the effects of various fracture and matrix transport parameters are analyzed. Subsequently, the transport through a fractured permeable formation is analyzed to ascertain the effect of equilibrium sorption, rate-limited sorption, and the multiprocess nonequilibrium transport process. It was found that the temporal moments were nearly identical for the fractured impermeable and permeable formations when both the diffusion coefficient and the first-order transformation coefficient were relatively large. The multiprocess nonequilibrium model resulted in a smaller mass recovery in the fracture and higher dispersion than the equilibrium and rate-limited sorption models. Chemical functionalization of various hydrocarbons, such as coronene, corannulene, and so forth, shows good promise in electronics applications because of their tunable optoelectronic properties. By using quantum chemical calculations, we have investigated the changes in the corannulene buckybowl structure, which greatly affect its electronic and optical properties when functionalized with different electron-withdrawing imide groups. We find that the chemical nature and position of functional groups strongly regulate the stacking geometry, -stacking interactions, and electronic structure. Herein, a range of optoelectronic properties and structure-property relationships of various imide-functionalized corannulenes are explored and rationalized in detail. In terms of carrier mobility, we find that the functionalization strongly affects the reorganization energy of corannulene, while the enhanced stacking improves hopping integrals, favoring the carrier mobility of crystals of pentafluorophenylcorannulene-5-monoimide. The study shows a host of emerging optoelectronic properties and enhancements in the charge-transport characteristics of functionalized corannulene, which may find possible semiconductor and electronics applications.

This paper critically analyzes, for the first time, the effect of nanofluid on thermally fully developed magnetohydrodynamic flows through microchannel, by considering combined effects of externally applied pressure gradient and electroosmosis. The classical boundary condition of uniform wall heat flux is considered, and the effects of viscous dissipation as well as Joule heating have been taken into account. Closed-form analytical expressions for the pertinent velocity and temperature distributions and the Nusselt number variations are obtained, in order to examine the role of nanofluids in influencing the fully developed thermal transport in electroosmotic microflows under the effect of magnetic field. Fundamental considerations are invoked to ascertain the consequences of particle agglomeration on the thermophysical properties of the nanofluid. The present theoretical formalism addresses the details of the interparticle interaction kinetics in tune with the pertinent variations in the effective particulate dimensions, volume fractions of the nanoparticles, as well as the aggregate structure of the particulate system. It is revealed that the inclusion of nanofluid changes the transport characteristics and system irreversibility to a considerable extent and can have significant consequences in the design of electroosmotically actuated microfluidic systems.

Herein we report the synthesis, characterization, and potential application of his (4- (7,9,10-triphenylfluoranthen-8-yl)pheny)sulfone (TPFDPSO2) and 2,8-bis (7,9,10-triphenylfluoranthen-8-yl) dibenzo b, d]-thiophene 5,5-dioxide (TPFDBTO2) as electron transport as well as light-emitting materials. These fluoranthene derivatives were synthesized by oxidation of their corresponding parent sulfide compounds, which were prepared via Diels-Alder reaction. These materials exhibit deep blue fluorescence emission in both solution and thin film, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), thermal and electrochemical stability over a wide potential range. Hole- and electron-only devices were fabricated to study the charge transport characteristics, and predominant electron transport property comparable with that of a well-known electron transport material, Alq(3), was observed. Furthermore, bilayer electroluminescent devices were fabricated utilizing these fluoranthene derivatives as electron transport as well as emitting layer, and device performance was compared with that of their parent sulfide molecules. The electroluminescence (EL) devices fabricated with these molecules displayed bright sky blue color emission and 5-fold improvement in external quantum efficiency (EQE) with respect to their parent compounds.

Cu2SnS3 thin films were deposited by a facile sot-gel technique followed by annealing. The annealed films were structurally characterized by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The crystal structure was found to be tetragonal with crystallite sizes of 2.4-3 nm. Texture coefficient calculations from the GIXRD revealed the preferential orientation of the film along the (112) plane. The morphological investigations of the films were carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and the composition using electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The temperature dependent current, voltage characteristics of the Cu2SnS3/AZnO heterostructure were studied. The log I-log V plot exhibited three regions of different slopes showing linear ohmic behavior and non-linear behavior following the power law. The temperature dependent current voltage characteristics revealed the variation in ideality factor and barrier height with temperature. The Richardson constant was calculated and its deviation from the theoretical value revealed the inhomogeneity of the barrier heights. Transport characteristics were modeled using the thermionic emission model. The Gaussian distribution of barrier heights was applied and from the modified Richardson plot the value of the Richardson constant was found to be 47.18 A cm(-2) K-2. (c) 2015 Elsevier B.V. The objective of this thesis is to develop a framework to conduct velocity resolved - scalar modeled (VR-SM) simulations, which will enable accurate simulations at higher Reynolds and Schmidt (Sc) numbers than are currently feasible. The framework established will serve as a first step to enable future simulation studies for practical applications. To achieve this goal, in-depth analyses of the physical, numerical, and modeling aspects related to Sc>>1 are presented, specifically when modeling in the viscous-convective subrange. Transport characteristics are scrutinized by examining scalar-velocity Fourier mode interactions in Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) datasets and suggest that scalar modes in the viscous-convective subrange do not directly affect large-scale transport for high Sc. Further observations confirm that discretization errors inherent in numerical schemes can be sufficiently large to wipe out any meaningful contribution from subfilter models. This provides strong incentive to develop more effective numerical schemes to support high Sc simulations. To lower numerical dissipation while maintaining physically and mathematically appropriate scalar bounds during the convection step, a novel method of enforcing bounds is formulated, specifically for use with cubic Hermite polynomials. Boundedness of the scalar being transported is effected by applying derivative limiting techniques, and physically plausible single sub-cell extrema are allowed to exist to help minimize numerical dissipation. The proposed bounding algorithm results in significant performance gain in DNS of turbulent mixing layers and of homogeneous isotropic turbulence. Next, the combined physical/mathematical behavior of the subfilter scalar-flux vector is analyzed in homogeneous isotropic turbulence, by examining vector orientation in the strain-rate eigenframe. The results indicate no discernible dependence on the modeled scalar field, and lead to the identification of the tensor-diffusivity model as a good representation of the subfilter flux. Velocity resolved - scalar modeled simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence are conducted to confirm the behavior theorized in these a priori analyses, and suggest that the tensor-diffusivity model is ideal for use in the viscous-convective subrange. Simulations of a turbulent mixing layer are also discussed, with the partial objective of analyzing Schmidt number dependence of a variety of scalar statistics. Large-scale statistics are confirmed to be relatively independent of the Schmidt number for Sc>>1, which is explained by the dominance of subfilter dissipation over resolved molecular dissipation in the simulations. Overall, the VR-SM framework presented is quite effective in predicting large-scale transport characteristics of high Schmidt number scalars, however, it is determined that prediction of subfilter quantities would entail additional modeling intended specifically for this purpose. The VR-SM simulations presented in this thesis provide us with the opportunity to overlap with experimental studies, while at the same time creating an assortment of baseline datasets for future validation of LES models, thereby satisfying the objectives outlined for this work.
