Photoinduced poling (PIP) is a new technique which allows the room‐temperature preparation of guest/host polymer films exhibiting significant polar order for nonlinear optical applications. We report a comparison of this novel technique with the conventional electrode poling procedure performed at the glass transition temperature of the polymer using disperse red 1/poly(methylmethacrylate) films. In particular, in situ second harmonic generation measurements show that levels of polar order achieved using these two techniques are similar. In contrast, the stability of the polar order is reduced by up to 20 times in terms of the decay time constant in films prepared using PIP although the stability is very dependent upon the temperature at which the poling was performed.

Tellurite glasses are photonic materials of special interest to the branch of optoelectronic and communication, due to its important optical properties such as high refractive index, broad IR transmittance, low phonon energy etc. Tellurite glasses are solutions to the search of potential candidates for nonlinear optical devices. Low phonon energy makes it an efficient host for dopant ions like rare earths, allowing a better environment for radiative transitions. The dopant ions maintain majority of their individual properties in the glass matrix. Tellurites are less toxic than chalcogenides, more chemically and thermally stable which makes them a highly suitable fiber material for nonlinear applications in the midinfrared and they are of increased research interest in applications like laser, amplifier, sensor etc. Low melting point and glass transition temperature helps tellurite glass preparation easier than other glass families. In order to probe into the versatility of tellurite glasses in optoelectronic industry; we have synthesized and undertaken various optical studies on tellurite glasses. We have proved that the highly nonlinear tellurite glasses are suitable candidates in optical limiting, with comparatively lower optical limiting threshold. Tuning the optical properties of glasses is an important factor in the optoelectronic research. We have found that thermal poling is an efficient mechanism in tuning the optical properties of these materials. Another important nonlinear phenomenon found in zinc tellurite glasses is their ability to switch from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption in the presence of lanthanide ions. The proposed thesis to be submitted will have seven chapters

An all-fiber approach to terahertz generation using a periodically poled optical fiber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed approach, a continuous-wave THz wave is generated at a periodically poled fiber by beating two optical wavelengths from two laser sources with the wavelength spacing corresponding to the frequency of the THz wave. The key component in the system is the periodically poled fiber, which is made by a twin-hole fiber with the fiber core residing between two holes. The twin-hole fiber is then thermally poled at a temperature of similar to 260 degrees C with a voltage of 3.3 kV applied to the silver electrodes inside the two holes to introduce second-order nonlinearity. The quasi phase matching (QPM) condition is achieved by periodically erasing the thermal poling induced second-order nonlinearity with an ultraviolet laser, which enhances the energy conversion efficiency. The proposed approach is validated by an experiment. The emission of a THz wave centered at 3.8 THz with an output power of 0.5 mu W is observed. The frequency tunability between 2.2 and 3.8 THz is also experimentally demonstrated.

In the present work, the ultrasonic strain sensing performance of the large area PVDF thin film subjected to the thermal fatigue is studied. The PVDF thin film is prepared using hot press and the piezoelectric phase (beta-phase) has been achieved by thermo-mechanical treatment and poling under DC field. The sensors used in aircrafts for structural health monitoring applications are likely to be subjected to a wide range of temperature fluctuations which may create thermal fatigue in both aircraft structures and in the sensors. Thus, the sensitivity of the PVDF sensors for thermal fatigue needs to be studied for its effective implementation in the structural health monitoring applications. In present work, the fabricated films have been subjected to certain number of thermal cycles which serve as thermal fatigue and are further tested for ultrasonic strain sensitivity at various different frequencies. The PVDF sensor is bonded on the beam specimen at one end and the ultrasonic guided waves are launched with a piezoelectric wafer bonded on another end of the beam. Sensitivity of PVDF sensor in terms of voltage is obtained for increasing number of thermal cycles. Sensitivity variation is studied at various different extent of thermal fatigue. The variation of the sensor sensitivity with frequency due to thermal fatigue at different temperatures is also investigated. The present investigation shows an appropriate temperature range for the application of the PVDF sensors in structural health monitoring.

Films of high glass' transition temperature polymer polyetherketone doped with chromophore 2,2'[4-[(5-nitro-2-thiazolyl)azophenyl]-amino]-bisethanol NTAB) were prepared, poled by the corona-onset poling setup which includes a grid voltage making the surface-charge distribution uniform at elevated temperature. The thickness of the films was measured by the Model 2010 Prism Coupler system. Second harmonic generation d(33) was measured by the second harmonic generation method, and the d33 is 38.12 pm/V at 1064 nm under the absorption correction. The nonlinear optical activity maintains is 80% of its initial value. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Films of polyetherketone doped with the chromophores Disperse Red 1 (DR1) and Disperse Red 13 (DR13) were prepared by spin-coating method. By the in situ Second-harmonic Generation (SHG) signal intensity measurement, the optimal poling temperatures were obtained. For the investigated polyetherketone polymer doped with DR1 (DR1/PEK-c) and polyetherketone polymer doped with DR13 (DR13/PEK-c) films, the optimal poling temperatures were 150degreesC and 140degreesC, respectively. Under the optimal poling conditions, the high second-order nonlinear optical coefficient chi(33)((2)) = 11.02 pm/V has been obtained for the DR1/PEK-c; and for DR13/PEK-c at the same conditions the coefficient is 17.9 pm/V. The SHG signal intensity DR1/PEK-c could maintain more than 80% of its initial value when the temperature was under 100degreesC, and the SHG signal intensity of the DR13/PEK-c could maintain more than 80% of its initial value when the temperature was under 135degreesC. This article reports systematic results of corona poling measurements obtained on biaxially stretched polyvinylidene fluoride films charged in dry air. Charging was performed using the constant current corona triode. The dependence of the poling process on the sample thickness, charging current, and successive charging processes was investigated. Phase transitions from alpha to delta and to beta phases were observed when virgin samples were corona charged. The thermal pulse technique showed that the polarization profiles during charging can be made consistently almost uniform and that the ferroelectric reorientation can be associated with the rising plateau region displayed on potential buildup curves. Composite films made of lead zirconate titanate ceramic particles coated with polyaniline and poly(vinylidene fluoride) - PZT-PAni/PVDF were produced by hot pressing the powder mixtures in the desired ceramic volume fraction. The ceramic particles were coated during the polyaniline synthesis and the conductivity of the conductor polymer was controlled by different degrees of protonation. Composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ac and dc electrical measurements, the longitudinal d33 piezo coefficient and the photopyroelectric response. Results showed that the presence of PAni increased the dielectric permittivity of the composite and allowed better efficiency in the poling process, which increased the piezo- and pyroelectric activities of the composite film and reduced both the poling time and the poling electric field. The thermal sensing of the material was also analyzed, showing that this composite can be used as pyroelectric sensor. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Raman spectroscopy of formamide-intercalated kaolinites treated using controlled-rate thermal analysis technology (CRTA), allowing the separation of adsorbed formamide from intercalated formamide in formamide-intercalated kaolinites, is reported. The Raman spectra of the CRTA-treated formamide-intercalated kaolinites are significantly different from those of the intercalated kaolinites, which display a combination of both intercalated and adsorbed formamide. An intense band is observed at 3629 cm-1, attributed to the inner surface hydroxyls hydrogen bonded to the formamide. Broad bands are observed at 3600 and 3639 cm-1, assigned to the inner surface hydroxyls, which are hydrogen bonded to the adsorbed water molecules. The hydroxyl-stretching band of the inner hydroxyl is observed at 3621 cm-1 in the Raman spectra of the CRTA-treated formamide-intercalated kaolinites. The results of thermal analysis show that the amount of intercalated formamide between the kaolinite layers is independent of the presence of water. Significant differences are observed in the CO stretching region between the adsorbed and intercalated formamide.

The morphological and chemical changes occurring during the thermal decomposition of weddelite, CaC2O4·2H2O, have been followed in real time in a heating stage attached to an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope operating at a pressure of 2 Torr, with a heating rate of 10 °C/min and an equilibration time of approximately 10 min. The dehydration step around 120 °C and the loss of CO around 425 °C do not involve changes in morphology, but changes in the composition were observed. The final reaction of CaCO3 to CaO while evolving CO2 around 600 °C involved the formation of chains of very small oxide particles pseudomorphic to the original oxalate crystals. The change in chemical composition could only be observed after cooling the sample to 350 °C because of the effects of thermal radiation.

The thermal stability and thermal decomposition pathways for synthetic iowaite have been determined using thermogravimetry in conjunction with evolved gas mass spectrometry. Chemical analysis showed the formula of the synthesised iowaite to be Mg6.27Fe1.73(Cl)1.07(OH)16(CO3)0.336.1H2O and X-ray diffraction confirms the layered structure. Dehydration of the iowaite occurred at 35 and 79°C. Dehydroxylation occurred at 254 and 291°C. Both steps were associated with the loss of CO2. Hydrogen chloride gas was evolved in two steps at 368 and 434°C. The products of the thermal decomposition were MgO and a spinel MgFe2O4. Experimentally it was found to be difficult to eliminate CO2 from inclusion in the interlayer during the synthesis of the iowaite compound and in this way the synthesised iowaite resembled the natural mineral.
