Heterogeneous photocatalysis is an ideal green energy technology for the purification of wastewater. Although titania dominates as the reference photocatalyst, its wide band gap is a bottleneck for extended utility. Thus, search for non-TiO2 based nanomaterials has become an active area of research in recent years. In this regard, visible light absorbing polycrystalline WO3 (2.4-2.8 eV) and Bi2WO6 (2.8 eV) with versatile structure-electronic properties has gained considerable interest to promote the photocatalytic reactions. These materials are also explored in selective functional group transformation in organic reactions, because of low reduction and oxidation potential of WO3 CB and Bi2WO6 VB, respectively. In this focused review, various strategies such as foreign ion doping, noble metal deposition and heterostructuring with other semiconductors designed for efficient photocatalysis is discussed. These modifications not only extend the optical response to longer wavelengths, but also prolong the life-time of the charge carriers and strengthen the photocatalyst stability. The changes in the surface-bulk properties and the charge carrier transfer dynamics associated with each modification correlating to the high activity are emphasized. The presence of oxidizing agents, surface modification with Cu2+ ions and synthesis of exposed facets to promote the degradation rate is highlighted. In depth study on these nanomaterials is likely to sustain interest in wastewater remediation and envisaged to signify in various green energy applications. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Objectives To investigate the contribution of direct electron transfer mechanisms to electricity production in microbial fuel cells by physically retaining Shewanella oneidensis cells close to or away from the anode electrode. Results A maximum power output of 114 ± 6 mWm−2 was obtained when cells were retained close to the anode using a dialysis membrane. This was 3.5 times more than when the cells were separated away from the anode. Without the membrane the maximum power output was 129 ± 6 mWm−2. The direct mechanisms of electron transfer contributed significantly to overall electron transfer from S. oneidensis to electrodes, a result that was corroborated by another experiment where S. oneidensis cells were entrapped in alginate gels. Conclusion S. oneidensis transfers electrons primarily by direct electron transfer as opposed to mediated electron transfer.

Glass samples with the composition (mol%) 80TeO(2)-10Nb(2)O(5)-5K(2)O-5Li(2)O, stable against crystallization, were prepared containing Yb3+, Tm3+ and Ho3+. The energy transfer and energy back transfer mechanisms in samples containing 5% Yb3+-5% Tm3+ and 5% Yb3+-5% Tm3+-0.5% Ho3+ were estimated by measuring the absorption and fluorescence spectra together with the time dependence of the Yb3+ F-2(5/2) excited state. A good fit for the luminescence time evolution was obtained with the Yokota-Tanimoto's diffusion-limited model. The up-conversion fluorescence was also studied in 5% Yb-5% Tm. 5% Yb-0.5% Ho and 5% Yb-5% Tm-0.5% Ho tellurite glasses under laser excitation at 975 nm. Strong emission was observed from (1)G(4) and F-3(2) Tm3+ energy levels in all samples. The S-5(2) Ho3+ emission was observed only in Yb3+Ho3+ samples being completely quenched in Yb3+/Tm3+/Tm3+ samples. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the energy-transfer mechanisms and emission quantum yield measurements of sol-gel-derived Eu3+-based nanohybrids. The matrix of these materials, classified as diureasils and termed U(2000) and U(600), includes urea cross-links between a siliceous backbone and polyether-based segments of two molecular weights, 2000 and 600, respectively. These materials are full-color emitters in which the Eu3+ (5)Do --> F-7(0-4) lines merge with the broad green-blue emission of the nanoscopic matrix's backbone. The excitation spectra show the presence of a large broad band (similar to 27000-29000 cm(-1)) undoubtedly assigned to a ligand-to-metal charge-transfer state. Emission quantum yields range from 2% to 13.0% depending on the polymer molecular weight and Eu3+ concentration. Energy transfer between the hybrid hosts and the cations arises from two different and independent processes: the charge-transfer band and energy transfer from the hybrid's emitting centers. The activation of the latter mechanisms induces a decrease in the emission quantum yields (relative to undoped nanohybrids) and permits a fine-tuning of the emission chromaticity across the Comission Internacionalle d'Eclairage diagram, e.g., (x, y) color coordinates from (0.21, 0.24) to (0.39, 0.36). Moreover, that activation depends noticeably on the ion local coordination. For the diureasils with longer polymer chains, energy transfer occurs as the Eu3+ coordination involves the carbonyl-type oxygen atoms of the urea bridges, which are located near the hybrid's host emitting centers. on the contrary, in the U(600)-based diureasils, the Eu3+ ions are coordinated to the polymer chains, and therefore, the distance between the hybrid's emitting centers and the metal ions is large enough to allow efficient energy-transfer mechanisms.

Two-phase flow heat exchangers have been shown to have very high efficiencies, but the lack of a dependable model and data precludes them from use in many cases. Herein a new method for the measurement of local convective heat transfer coefficients from the outside of a heat transferring wall has been developed, which results in accurate local measurements of heat flux during two-phase flow. This novel technique uses a chevron-pattern corrugated plate heat exchanger consisting of a specially machined Calcium Fluoride plate and the refrigerant HFE7100, with heat flux values up to 1 W cm-2 and flow rates up to 300 kg m-2s-1. As Calcium Fluoride is largely transparent to infra-red radiation, the measurement of the surface temperature of PHE that is in direct contact with the liquid is accomplished through use of a mid-range (3.0-5.1 µm) infra-red camera. The objective of this study is to develop, validate, and use a unique infrared thermometry method to quantify the heat transfer characteristics of flow boiling within different Plate Heat Exchanger geometries. This new method allows high spatial and temporal resolution measurements. Furthermore quasi-local pressure measurements enable us to characterize the performance of each geometry. Validation of this technique will be demonstrated by comparison to accepted single and two-phase data. The results can be used to come up with new heat transfer correlations and optimization tools for heat exchanger designers. The scientific contribution of this thesis is, to give PHE developers further tools to allow them to identify the heat transfer and pressure drop performance of any corrugated plate pattern directly without the need to account for typical error sources due to inlet and outlet distribution systems. Furthermore, the designers will now gain information on the local heat transfer distribution within one plate heat exchanger cell which will help to choose the correct corrugation geometry for a given task.

It is suggested that the ability and practices of how the multinational corporation (MNC) manages knowledge transfer among its geographically dispersed subsidiary units are crucial for the building and development of firm competitive advantage. However, cross-border transfer of valuable organizational knowledge is likely to be problematic and laborious, especially within diversified and differentiated MNCs. Using data collected from 164 western multinational companies’ subsidiary units located in China and Finland, this study aims to investigate cross-border knowledge transfer within the MNC. It explores a number of factors that influence the transfer of knowledge among units in the differentiated MNC. The study consists of five individual papers. Paper 1 investigates a range of organizational mechanisms that may positively influence a subsidiary’s propensity to undertake knowledge transfers to other parts of the corporation. Paper 2 explores the impact of subsidiary location on the motivational dispositions of knowledge receiving units to value and accept knowledge from subsidiaries located in economically less advanced countries. Paper 3 examines the influence of social capital variables on knowledge transfer in dyadic relationships between foreign-owned subsidiaries and their sister and patent units. Paper 4 provides some initial insights into potentially different effects of trust and shared vision in intra-organizational vs. inter-organizational relationships. Using a case study setting, Paper 5 explores means and mechanisms used in transferring human resource management practices to Western MNCs’ business units in China from a cultural perspective. The results of the study show that MNC management through choices regarding organizational controls can encourage and enhance corporate-internal knowledge transfer. It also finds evidence that more knowledge is transferred from subsidiaries located in an industrialized country (e.g., Finland) than subsidiaries located in a developing country (e.g., China). While the study has highlighted the importance of social capital in promoting knowledge transfer, it has also uncovered some new findings that the effect of trust and shared vision may be contingent upon different contexts. Finally, in Paper 5, a number of mechanisms used in transferring selected HRM practices and competences to the Chinese business units have been identified. The findings suggest that cultural differences should be taken into consideration in the choice and use of different transfer mechanisms.

Effective knowledge transfer between infrastructure projects plays a significant role in organisational success and discovery of new technologies, helping to achieve and maintain competitive advantage and, in effect, sustainable infrastructure development. Knowledge is recognised as an important organisational asset that adds value while being shared. To date, research on knowledge transfer has focused on traditional (functional) types of organisations. However, existing knowledge transfer approaches fail to address the issue of unique characteristics of project-based organisations, and the fact that functional and project-based organisations significantly differ in terms of structure, processes, and characteristics. Therefore, there is a need for a different, separate approach for managing knowledge in the project environment. The aim of this chapter is to highlight this need. An extensive literature review is provided on the areas of project management, knowledge management, and organisational structure; this is further supported by empirical evidence from interviews with project management practitioners. Conducting a ‘cross-field’ literature review provides a better understanding of the knowledge transfer mechanisms and its application to projects, and of the importance of knowledge transfer across projects. This research is crucial to gaining a better understanding of knowledge transfer in the project environment. It stresses that there are dissimilarities between project-based organisations and functional organisations in terms of organisational structure, duration of processes, viewpoint of time, response to change, and mobility of people, and that there is a need for a unique strategic approach in order to achieve effective transfer of knowledge. Furthermore, findings presented in this chapter reveal key elements that play an important role in across project knowledge transfer. These elements include: social communication, lessons learned databases, and project management offices.

Globalization stimulated demand for transnational higher education. However, little is known about how transnational programs can facilitate knowledge transfer between the partner universities—something that is often implied in the partnership arrangement. For the purpose of this paper transnational programs will be limited to dual degree programs between Indonesian and Australian universities, which, in recent years have been rising. Nevertheless, the discussion and synthesis may have value to other transnational programs. Situating the knowledge transfer in the wider context of globalization of higher education and the current reforms in Indonesian education, the paper acknowledges the tension between the need to generate revenue and the ideals of facilitating knowledge transfer and capacity development for Indonesian universities. Drawing on a detailed review of research findings in the business and education sector literature, this paper presents a conceptual framework that may be used to analyze knowledge transfer between Indonesian and Australian universities. Such investigations delineate the significant drivers underlying transnational programs for supporting knowledge transfer. The proposed framework incorporates the types of knowledge, knowledge transfer mechanisms, and the processes. It also considers how the inter-university antecedents may affect the potential for knowledge transfer between the universities. A discussion of how the framework may be used to implemented knowledge transfer concludes this paper.

The function of a building is to ensure safety and thermal comfort for healthy living conditions. Buildings primarily comprise an envelope, which acts as an interface separating the external environment from the indoors environment. The building envelope is primarily responsible for regulating indoor thermal comfort in response to external climatic conditions. It usually comprises a configuration of building materials to thus far provide requisite structural performance. However, studies into building-envelope configurations to provide a particular thermal performance are limited. As the building envelope is exposed to the external environment there will be heat and moisture transfer to the indoor environment through it. The overall phenomenon of heat and moisture transfer depends on the microstructure and configuration within the building material. Further, thermal property of a material is generally dependent on its microstructure, which comprises a network of pores and particles arranged in a definite structure. Thermal behaviour of a building material thus depends on the thermal conductivities of the solid particles, pore micro-structure and its constituent fluid (air and/or moisture). The thermal response of a building envelope is determined by the thermal characteristics of the individual building materials and its configuration. Understanding the heat transfer influenced by the complex networks of pores and particles is a relatively new study in the area of building climatic-response. The current study reviews the heat-transfer mechanisms that determine the thermal performance of a building material attributed to its micro-structure. A theoretical basis for the same is being evolved and its relevance in regulating heat-transfer through building envelopes, walls in particular, is reviewed in this paper. (C) 2014 N.C. Balaji. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and a novel k -l based hybrid LES/RANS approach have been applied to simulate a conjugate heat transfer problem involving flow over a matrix of surface mounted cubes. In order to assess the capability and reliability of the newly developed k -l based hybrid LES/RANS, numerical results are compared with new LES and existing RANS results. Comparisons include mean velocity profiles, Reynolds stresses and conjugate heat transfer. As well as for hybrid LES/RANS validation purposes, the LES results are used to gain insights into the complex flow physics and heat transfer mechanisms. Numerical simulations show that the hybrid LES/RANS approach is effective. Mean and instantaneous fluid temperatures adjacent to the cube surface are found to strongly correlate with flow structure. Although the LES captures more mean velocity field complexities, broadly time averaged wake temperature fields are found similar for the LES and hybrid LES/RANS.
