We suggest a method for constructing trial eigenfunctions for excited states to be used in the variational method. This method is a generalization of the one that uses a superpotential to obtain the trial functions for the ground state. The construction of an effective hierarchy of Hamiltonians is used to determine excited variational energies. The first four eigenvalues for a quartic double-well potential are calculated for several values of the potential parameter. The results are in very good agreement with the eigenvalues obtained by numerical integration.

In the last decades, the study of nonlinear one dimensional lattices has attracted much attention of the scientific community. One of these lattices is related to a simplified model for the DNA molecule, allowing to recover experimental results, such as the denaturation of DNA double helix. Inspired by this model we construct a Hamiltonian for a reflectionless potential through the Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics formalism, SQM. Thermodynamical properties of such one dimensional lattice are evaluated aming possible biological applications.

Classical BRST invariance in the pure spinor formalism for the open superstring is shown to imply the supersymmetric Born-Infeld equations of motion for the background fields. These equations are obtained by requiring that the left and right-moving BRST currents are equal on the worldsheet boundary in the presence of the background. The Born-Infeld equations are expressed in N = 1 D = 10 superspace and include all abelian contributions to the low-energy equations of motion, as well as the leading non-abelian contributions. © SISSA/ISAS 2003.

We propose a novel mathematical approach for the calculation of near-zero energy states by solving potentials which are isospectral with the original one. For any potential, families of strictly isospectral potentials (with very different shape) having desirable and adjustable features are generated by supersymmetric isospectral formalism. The near-zero energy Efimov state in the original potential is effectively trapped in the deep well of the isospectral family and facilitates more accurate calculation of the Efimov state. Application to the first excited state in He-4 trimer is presented.

It has recently been shown that the ten-dimensional superstring can be quantized using the BRST operator Q = philambda(alpha)d(alpha), where lambda(alpha) is a pure spinor satisfying; lambdagamma(m)lambda = 0 and dalpha is the fermionic supersymmetric derivative. In this paper, the pure spinor version of superstring theory is formulated in a curved supergravity background and it is shown that nilpotency and holomorphicity of the pure spinor BRST operator imply the on-shell superspace constraints of the supergravity background. This is shown to lowest order in alpha' for the heterotic and Type II superstrings, thus providing a compact pure spinor version of the ten-dimensional superspace constraints for N = 1 Type IIA and Type IIB supergravities. Since quantization is straightforward using the pure spinor version of the superstring, it is expected that these methods can also be used to compute higher-order alpha' corrections to the ten-dimensional superspace constraints. We build a complete supersymmetric version of a 3-3-1 gauge model using the superfield formalism. We point out that a discrete symmetry, similar to R symmetry in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, is possible to be defined in this model. Hence we have both R-conservina and R-violating possibilities. Analysis of the mass spectrum of the neutral real scalar fields show that in this model the lightest scalar Higgs boson has a mass upper limit, and at the tree level it is 124.5 GeV for a given illustrative set of parameters.

Exact reflection and transmission coefficients for supersymmetric shape-invariant potentials barriers are calculated by an analytical continuation of the asymptotic wavefunctions obtained via the introduction of new generalized ladder operators. The general form of the wavefunction is obtained by the use of the F(-infinity, +infinity)-matrix formalism of Froman and Froman which is related to the evolution of asymptotic wavefunction coefficients.

The formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics supplies a trial wave function to be used in the variational method. The screened Coulomb potential is analyzed within this approach. Numerical and exact results for energy eigenvalues are compared.

In this work, we present a supersymmetric extension of the quantum spherical model, both in components and also in the superspace formalisms. We find the solution for short- and long-range interactions through the imaginary time formalism path integral approach. The existence of critical points (classical and quantum) is analyzed and the corresponding critical dimensions are determined.

This article argues that copyright law is not just a creature of statute, but it is also a social and imaginative contruct. It evaluates a number of critiques of legal formalism. Part 1 examines whether the positive rules and principles of copyright law are the product of historical contingency and political expediency. Part 2 considers the social operation of copyright law in terms of its material effects and cultural significance. Part 3 investigates the future of copyright law, in light of the politics of globalisation and the impact of new information technologies.

Using the dimensional reduction regularization scheme, we show that radiative corrections to the anomaly of the axial current, which is coupled to the gauge field, are absent in a supersymmetric U(1) gauge model for both 't Hooft-Veltman and Bardeen prescriptions for γ5. We also discuss the results with reference to conventional dimensional regularization. This result has significant implications with respect to the renormalizability of supersymmetric models.
