The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian has been one of most used models to study the electronic structure of polyacetylene (PA) chains. It has been reported in the literature that in the SSH framework a disordered soliton distribution can not produce a metallic regime. However, in this work (using the same SSH model and parameters) we show that this is possible. The necessary conditions for true metals (non-vanishing density of states and extended wavefunctions around the Fermi level) are obtained for soliton concentration higher than 6% through soliton segregation (clustering). These results are consistent with recent experimental data supporting disorder as an essential mechanism behind the high conductivity of conducting polymers. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. We identify an intriguing feature of the electron-vibrational dynamics of molecular systems via a computational examination of trans-polyacetylene oligomers. Here, via the vibronic interactions, the decay of an electron in the conduction band resonantly excites an electron in the valence band, and vice versa, leading to oscillatory exchange of electronic population between two distinct electronic states that lives for up to tens of picoseconds. The oscillatory structure is reminiscent of beating patterns between quantum states and is strongly suggestive of the presence of long-lived molecular electronic coherence. Significantly, however, a detailed analysis of the electronic coherence properties shows that the oscillatory structure arises from a purely incoherent process. These results were obtained by propagating the coupled dynamics of electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in a mixed quantum-classical study of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian for polyacetylene. The incoherent process is shown to occur between degenerate electronic states with distinct electronic configurations that are indirectly coupled via a third auxiliary state by vibronic interactions. A discussion of how to construct electronic superposition states in molecules that are truly robust to decoherence is also presented

It's believed that the simple Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian can not predict the insulator to metal transition of transpolyacetylene (t-PA). The soliton lattice configuration at a doping level y=6% still has a semiconductor gap. Disordered distributions of solitons close the gap, but the electronic states around the Fermi energy are localized. However, within the same framework, it is possible to show that a cluster of solitons can produce dramatic changes in the electronic structure, allowing an insulator-to-metal transition.

Ultrafast photoinduced absorption by infrared-active vibrational modes is used to detect charged solitons in oriented trans-polyacetylene. Soliton pairs are photogenerated within similar to250 fs with quantum efficiencies (phi(ch)) approaching unity. The excitation spectrum of phi(ch) shows an onset at similar to1.0 eV with a weak photon energy dependence up to 4.7 eV. The results are consistent with the ultrafast soliton formation predicted by Su and Schrieffer and with the Su-Scrieffer-Heeger threshold of 2E(g)/pi for soliton pair production. The recombination dynamics of charged solitons is very fast (initial decay<1 ps) with a modest dependence on the pump photon energy.

We consider flavor changing neutral current effects coming from the Z' exchange in 3-3-1 models. We show that the mass of this extra neutral vector boson may be less than 2 TeV and discuss the problem of quark family discrimination.

We study the Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani mechanism for flavor-changing neutral-current suppression in both the gauge and Higgs sectors, for models with SU(3)L X U(1)N gauge symmetry. The models differ from one another only with respect to the representation content. The main features of these models are that in order to cancel the triangle anomalies the number of families must be divisible by three (the number of colors) and that the lepton number is violated by some lepton-gauge bosons and lepton-scalar interactions.

We verify that SU(N)TC⊗ - SU(3) L⊗ - U(1)X models, where the gauge symmetry breaking is totally dynamical and promoted by the non-Abelian technicolor group and the strong Abelian interactions, are quite constrained by the LHC data. The theory contains a T quark self-energy involving the mixing between the neutral gauge bosons, which introduces the coupling between the light and heavy composite scalar bosons of the model. We determine the lightest scalar boson mass for these models from an effective action for composite operators, assuming details about the dynamics of the strong interaction theories. Comparing the value of this mass with the ATLAS and CMS observation of a new boson with a mass M∼125 GeV and considering the lower bound determined by the LHC Collaboration on the heavy neutral gauge boson (Z′) present in these models, we can establish constraints on the possible models. For example, if SU(N)TC≡SU(2)TC, with technifermions in the fundamental representation, the model barely survives the confrontation with the LHC data. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Two models with SU(3)C ⊗ SU(3)L U(1)N gauge symmetry are considered. We show that the masslessness of the photon does not prevent the neutrinos from acquiring Majorana masses. That is, there is no relation between the VEVs of Higgs fields and the electromagnetic gauge invariance contrary to what has been claimed recently. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We study two 3-3-1 models with (i) five (four) charge 2/3 (-1/3) quarks and (ii) four (five) charge 2/3 (-1/3) quarks and a vectorlike third generation. Possibilities beyond these models are also briefly considered.

This thesis has contributed to the advancement of knowledge in disease modelling by addressing interesting and crucial issues relevant to modelling health data over space and time. The research has led to the increased understanding of spatial scales, temporal scales, and spatial smoothing for modelling diseases, in terms of their methodology and applications. This research is of particular significance to researchers seeking to employ statistical modelling techniques over space and time in various disciplines. A broad class of statistical models are employed to assess what impact of spatial and temporal scales have on simulated and real data.

Spatial data are now prevalent in a wide range of fields including environmental and health science. This has led to the development of a range of approaches for analysing patterns in these data. In this paper, we compare several Bayesian hierarchical models for analysing point-based data based on the discretization of the study region, resulting in grid-based spatial data. The approaches considered include two parametric models and a semiparametric model. We highlight the methodology and computation for each approach. Two simulation studies are undertaken to compare the performance of these models for various structures of simulated point-based data which resemble environmental data. A case study of a real dataset is also conducted to demonstrate a practical application of the modelling approaches. Goodness-of-fit statistics are computed to compare estimates of the intensity functions. The deviance information criterion is also considered as an alternative model evaluation criterion. The results suggest that the adaptive Gaussian Markov random field model performs well for highly sparse point-based data where there are large variations or clustering across the space; whereas the discretized log Gaussian Cox process produces good fit in dense and clustered point-based data. One should generally consider the nature and structure of the point-based data in order to choose the appropriate method in modelling a discretized spatial point-based data.

A general derivation of the coupling constant relations which result on embedding a non-simple group like SU L (2) @ U(1) in a larger simple group (or graded Lie group) is given. It is shown that such relations depend only on the requirement (i) that the multiplet of vector fields form an irreducible representation of the unifying algebra and (ii) the transformation properties of the fermions under SU L (2). This point is illustrated in two ways, one by constructing two different unification groups containing the same fermions and therefore have same Weinberg angle; the other by putting different SU L (2) structures on the same fermions and consequently have different Weinberg angles. In particular the value sin~0=3/8 is characteristic of the sequential doublet models or models which invoke a large number of additional leptons like E 6, while addition of extra charged fermion singlets can reduce the value of sin ~ 0 to 1/4. We point out that at the present time the models of grand unification are far from unique.

We study the production of the lightest neutralinos in the process e(+)e(-) -> chi(0)(1)chi(0)(1)gamma in supersymmetric grand unified models for the International Linear Collider energies with longitudinally polarized beams. We consider cases where the standard model gauge group is unified into the grand unified gauge groups SU(5), or SO(10). We have carried out a comprehensive study of this process in the SU(5) and SO(10) grand unified theories which includes the QED radiative corrections. We compare and contrast the dependence of the signal cross section on the grand unified gauge group, and on the different representations of the grand unified gauge group, when the electron and positron beams are longitudinally polarized. To assess the feasibility of experimentally observing the radiative production process, we have also considered in detail the background to this process coming from the radiative neutrino production process e(+)e(-)-> nu(nu) over bar gamma with longitudinally polarized electron and positron beams. In addition we have also considered the supersymmetric background coming from the radiative production of scalar neutrinos in the process e(+)e(-) -> (nu) over tilde(nu) over tilde*gamma with longitudinally polarized beams. The process can be a major background to the radiative production of neutralinos when the scalar neutrinos decay invisibly.
