Denote the set of 21 non-isomorphic cubic graphs of order 10 by L. We first determine precisely which L is an element of L occur as the leave of a partial Steiner triple system, thus settling the existence problem for partial Steiner triple systems of order 10 with cubic leaves. Then we settle the embedding problem for partial Steiner triple systems with leaves L is an element of L. This second result is obtained as a corollary of a more general result which gives, for each integer v greater than or equal to 10 and each L is an element of L, necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a partial Steiner triple system of order v with leave consisting of the complement of L and v - 10 isolated vertices. It is shown that there exists a triangle decomposition of the graph obtained from the complete graph of order v by removing the edges of two vertex disjoint complete subgraphs of orders u and w if and only if u, w, and v are odd, ((v)(2)) - ((u)(2)) - ((w)(2)) equivalent to 0 (mod 3), and v >= w + u + max {u, w}. Such decompositions are equivalent to group divisible designs with block size 3, one group of size u, one group of size w, and v - u - w groups of size 1. This result settles the existence problem for Steiner triple systems having two disjoint specified subsystems, thereby generalizing the well-known theorem of Doyen and Wilson on the existence of Steiner triple systems with a single specified subsystem. This thesis is dedicated to the Tits-Kantor-Koecher (TKK) construction which establishes a bijective correspondence between unital Jordan algebras and shortly graded Lie algebras with Z-grading induced by an sl_2-triple. It is based on the observation that if g is a Lie algebra with a short Z-grading and f lies in g_1, then the formula ab=[[a,f],b] defines a structure of a Jordan algebra on g_{-1}. The TKK construction has been extended to Jordan triple systems and, more recently, to the so-called Kantor triple systems. These generalizations are studied in the thesis.

Does there exist a Steiner Triple System on v points, whose blocks can be partitioned into partial parallel classes of size m, where m ≤ [v⁄3], m | b and b is the number of blocks of the STS(v)? We give the answer for 9 ≤ v ≤ 43. We also show that whenever 2|b, v ≡ 3 (mod 6) we can find an STS(v) whose blocks can be partitioned into partial parallel classes of size 2, and whenever 4|b , v ≡ 3 (mod 6), there exists an STS(v) whose blocks can be partitioned into partial parallel classes of size 4.

A 4-cycle system of order n, denoted by 4CS(n), exists if and only if nequivalent to1 (mod 8). There are four configurations which can be formed by two 4-cycles in a 4CS(n). Formulas connecting the number of occurrences of each such configuration in a 4CS(n) are given. The number of occurrences of each configuration is determined completely by the number d of occurrences of the configuration D consisting of two 4-cycles sharing a common diagonal. It is shown that for every nequivalent to1 (mod 8) there exists a 4CS(n) which avoids the configuration D, i.e. for which d=0. The exact upper bound for d in a 4CS(n) is also determined.

Combinatorial configurations known as t-designs are studied. These are pairs ˂B, ∏˃, where each element of B is a k-subset of ∏, and each t-design occurs in exactly λ elements of B, for some fixed integers k and λ. A theory of internal structure of t-designs is developed, and it is shown that any t-design can be decomposed in a natural fashion into a sequence of “simple” subdesigns. The theory is quite similar to the analysis of a group with respect to its normal subgroups, quotient groups, and homomorphisms. The analogous concepts of normal subdesigns, quotient designs, and design homomorphisms are all defined and used.

This structure theory is then applied to the class of t-designs whose automorphism groups are transitive on sets of t points. It is shown that if G is a permutation group transitive on sets of t letters and ф is any set of letters, then images of ф under G form a t-design whose parameters may be calculated from the group G. Such groups are discussed, especially for the case t = 2, and the normal structure of such designs is considered. Theorem 2.2.12 gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a t-design to be simple, purely in terms of the automorphism group of the design. Some constructions are given.

Finally, 2-designs with k = 3 and λ = 2 are considered in detail. These designs are first considered in general, with examples illustrating some of the configurations which can arise. Then an attempt is made to classify all such designs with an automorphism group transitive on pairs of points. Many cases are eliminated of reduced to combinations of Steiner triple systems. In the remaining cases, the simple designs are determined to consist of one infinite class and one exceptional case.

Let G be a graph in which each vertex has been coloured using one of k colours, say c(1), c(2),..., c(k). If an m-cycle C in G has n(i) vertices coloured c(i), i = 1, 2,..., k, and (i) - n(j) less than or equal to 1 for any i, j is an element of {1, 2,..., k}, then C is equitably k-coloured. An m-cycle decomposition C of a graph G is equitably k-colourable if the vertices of G can be coloured so that every m-cycle in C is equitably k-coloured. For m = 4,5 and 6, we completely settle the existence problem for equitably 3-colourable m-cycle decompositions of complete graphs and complete graphs with the edges of a 1-factor removed. This paper presents a Variable neighbourhood search (VNS) approach for solving the Maximum Set Splitting Problem (MSSP). The algorithm forms a system of neighborhoods based on changing the component for an increasing number of elements. An efficient local search procedure swaps the components of pairs of elements and yields a relatively short running time. Numerical experiments are performed on the instances known in the literature: minimum hitting set and Steiner triple systems. Computational results show that the proposed VNS achieves all optimal or best known solutions in short times. The experiments indicate that the VNS compares favorably with other methods previously used for solving the MSSP. ACM Computing Classification System (1998): I.2.8.

Dedicated to the memory of the late professor Stefan Dodunekov on the occasion of his 70th anniversary. We classify up to multiplier equivalence maximal (v, 3, 1) optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) with v ≤ 61 and maximal (v, 3, 2, 1) OOCs with v ≤ 99. There is a one-to-one correspondence between maximal (v, 3, 1) OOCs, maximal cyclic binary constant weight codes of weight 3 and minimum dis tance 4, (v, 3; ⌊(v − 1)/6⌋) difference packings, and maximal (v, 3, 1) binary cyclically permutable constant weight codes. Therefore the classification of (v, 3, 1) OOCs holds for them too. Some of the classified (v, 3, 1) OOCs are perfect and they are equivalent to cyclic Steiner triple systems of order v and (v, 3, 1) cyclic difference families.

Context. This paper is the last in a series devoted to the analysis of the binary content of the Hipparcos Catalogue. Aims. The comparison of the proper motions constructed from positions spanning a short (Hipparcos) or long time (Tycho-2) makes it possible to uncover binaries with periods of the order of or somewhat larger than the short time span (in this case, the 3 yr duration of the Hipparcos mission), since the unrecognised orbital motion will then add to the proper motion. Methods. A list of candidate proper motion binaries is constructed from a carefully designed χ2 test evaluating the statistical significance of the difference between the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos proper motions for 103 134 stars in common between the two catalogues (excluding components of visual systems). Since similar lists of proper-motion binaries have already been constructed, the present paper focuses on the evaluation of the detection efficiency of proper-motion binaries, using different kinds of control data (mostly radial velocities). The detection rate for entries from the Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (SB9) is evaluated, as well as for stars like barium stars, which are known to be all binaries, and finally for spectroscopic binaries identified from radial velocity data in the Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. Results. Proper motion binaries are efficiently detected for systems with parallaxes in excess of ∼20 mas, and periods in the range 1000-30 000 d. The shortest periods in this range (1000-2000 d, i.e. once to twice the duration of the Hipparcos mission) may appear only as DMSA/G binaries (accelerated proper motion in the Hipparcos Double and Multiple System Annex). Proper motion binaries detected among SB9 systems having periods shorter than about 400 d hint at triple systems, the proper-motion binary involving a component with a longer orbital period. A list of 19 candidate triple systems is provided. Binaries suspected of having low-mass (brown-dwarf-like) companions are listed as well. Among the 37 barium stars with parallaxes larger than 5 mas, only 7 exhibit no evidence for duplicity whatsoever (be it spectroscopic or astrometric). Finally, the fraction of proper-motion binaries shows no significant variation among the various (regular) spectral classes, when due account is taken for the detection biases. © ESO 2007.
