Heat exchanger design plays a significant role in the performance of solid state hydrogen storage device. In the present study, a cylindrical hydrogen storage device with an embedded annular heat exchanger tube with radial circular copper fins, is considered. A 3-D mathematical model of the storage device is developed to investigate the sorption performance of metal hydride (MH). A prototype of the device is fabricated for 1 kg of MH alloy, LaNi5, and tested at constant supply pressure of hydrogen, validating the simulation results. Absorption characteristics of storage device have been examined by varying different operating parameters such as hydrogen supply pressure and cooling fluid temperature and velocity. Absorption process is completed in 18 min when these parameters are 15 bar, 298 K and 1 m/s respectively. A study of geometric parameters of copper fins (such as perforation, number and thickness of fin) has been carried out to investigate their effects on absorption process. Several experiments (time-resolved Z-scan experiments based on pulsed and CW pump lasers, time-resolved divergence diagnostics) have been performed to examine and clarify the question of the converging or diverging population lensing effect occurring in a Cr(3+):Al(2)O(3) ruby laser. The dynamics of the laser far-field divergence of such a laser indeed indicated initially a diverging effect while Z-scan measurements conclude to a converging one. The origin of this discrepancy is thus analysed and elucidated here by introducing the general concept of correlation collapse between the centre and the wings of a laser beam having some clipping. This article describes a solid-state NMR (SSNMR) investigation of the influence of hydration and chemical cross-linking on the molecular dynamics of the constituents of the bovine pericardium (BP) tissues and its relation to the mechanical properties of the tissue. Samples of natural phenetylamine-diepoxide (DE)- and glutaraldehyde (GL)-fixed BP were investigated by (13)C cross-polarization SSNMR to probe the dynamics of the collagen, and the results were correlated to the mechanical properties of the tissues, probed by dynamical mechanical analysis. For samples of natural BP, the NMR results show that the higher the hydration level the more pronounced the molecular dynamics of the collagen backbone and sidechains, decreasing the tissue`s elastic modulus. In contrast, in DE- and GL-treated samples, the collagen molecules are more rigid, and the hydration seems to be less effective in increasing the collagen molecular dynamics and reducing the mechanical strength of the samples. This is mostly attributed to the presence of cross-links between the collagen plates, which renders the collagen mobility less dependent on the water absorption in chemically treated samples. We present a detailed study of the Baryscan technique, a new efficient alternative to the widespread Z-scan technique which has been demonstrated [Opt. Lett. 36:8, 2011] to reach among the highest sensitivity levels. This method is based upon the measurement of optical nonlinearities by means of beam centroid displacements with a position sensitive detector and is able to deal with any kind of lensing effect. This technique is applied here to measure pump-induced electronic refractive index changes (population lens), which can be discriminated from parasitic thermal effects by using a time-resolved Baryscan experiment. This method is validated by evaluating the polarizability variation at the origin of the population lens observed in the reference Cr3+:GSGG laser material.

The anionic cluster Pt-19(CO)(22)](4-) (1), of pentagonal symmetry, reacts with CO and AuPPh3+ fragments. Upon increasing the Au:Pt-19, molar ratio, different species are sequentially formed, but only the last two members of the series could be characterized by X-ray diffraction, namely, Pt-19(CO)(24)(mu(4)-AuPPh3)(3)](-) (2) and Pt-19(CO)(24){mu(4)-Au-2(PPh3)(2)}(2)] (3).The metallic framework of the starting cluster is completely modified after the addition of CO and AuL+, and both products display the same platinum core of trigonal symmetry, with closely packed metal atoms. The three AuL+ units cap three different square faces in 2, whereas four AuL+ fragments are grouped in two independent bimetallic units in the neutral cluster 3. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies on 2 showed that its redox ability is comparable with that of the homometallic 1.

In recent years there has been an upsurge of interest in the study of organic reactions in the solid state. It is now realised that the crystalline matrix provides an extra-ordinary spatial control on the initiation and progress of these reactions. Electronic and dipolar effects which are important in solution are replaced by structural and geometric effects in solids. These 'spatial' or 'topochemical' aspects are important in understanding the mechanistic details of the reaction. In our laboratory, the thermally induced acyl migration in salicylamides from 0- to N- position in the solid state has been under study (Scheme 1). The structures of the acetyl and benzoyl derivatives (Ia,IIa, Ib and IIb) have been reported.

The conformation of the peptide Boc-L-Met-Aib-L-Phe-OMe has been studied in the solid state and solution by X-ray diffraction and 1H n.m.r., respectively. The peptide differs only in the N-terminal protecting group from the biologically active chemotactic peptide analog formyl-L-Met-Aib-L-Phe-OMe. The molecules adopt a type-II beta-turn in the solid state with Met and Aib as the corner residues (phi Met = -51.8 degrees, psi Met = 139.5 degrees, phi Aib = 58.1 degrees, psi Aib = 37.0 degrees). A single, weak 4----1 intramolecular hydrogen bond is observed between the Boc CO and Phe NH groups (N---O 3.25 A, N-H---O 128.4 degrees). 1H n.m.r. studies, using solvent and temperature dependencies of NH chemical shifts and paramagnetic radical induced line broadening of NH resonances, suggest that the Phe NH is solvent shielded in CDCl3 and (CD3)2SO. Nuclear Overhauser effects observed between Met C alpha H and Aib NH protons provide evidence of the occurrence of Met-Aib type-II beta-turns in these solvents.

The results of the structural and conformational studies carried out using C-13 CPMAS NMR technique on several glycine and alanine containing peptides in the solid state are reported. The study demonstrates the effects of variations in C-13 chemical shifts due to conformation and hydrogen bonding. The possibility of applying this technique to obtain insight into the conformational characteristics of peptides of unknown structures is discussed.

The approach taken in this paper in order to modify the scattering features of electrons and phonons and improve the figure of merit (ZT) of thermoelectric PbTe is to alter the microstructure at constant chemistry. A lamellar pattern of PbTe/GeTe at the nano- and microscale was produced in Pb(0.36)Ge(0.64)Te alloy by the diffusional decomposition of a supersaturated solid solution. The mechanism of nanostructuration is most likely a discontinuous spinodal decomposition. A simple model relating the interface velocity to the observed lamellar spacing is proposed. The effects of nanostructuration in Pb(0.36)Ge(0.64)Te alloy on the electrical and thermal conductivity, thermopower and ZT were investigated. It was shown that nanostructuration through the formation of a lamellar pattern of PbTe/GeTe is unlikely to provide a significant improvement due to the occurrence of discontinuous coarsening. However, the present study allows an analysis of possible strategies to improve thermoelectric materials via optimal design of the microstructure and optimized heat treatment. The performance of a series of near-UV (∼385 nm) emitting LEDs, consisting of high efficiency InGaN/AlInGaN QWs in the active region, was investigated. Significantly reduced roll-over of efficiency at high current density was found compared to InGaN/GaN LEDs emitting at a similar wavelength. The importance of optical cavity effects in flip-chip geometry devices has also been investigated. The light output was enhanced by more than a factor of 2 when the lightemitting region was located at an anti-node position with respect to a high reflectivity current injection mirror. A power of 0.49 mW into a numerical aperture of 0.5 was obtained for a junction area of 50μm in diameter and a current of 30 mA, corresponding to a radiance of 30 W/cm2/str.

A kilowatt diode-pumped solid state heat capacity laser is fabricated with a double-slab Nd:YAG. Using the theoretical model of heat capacity laser output laser characteristics, the relationships between the output power, temperature and time are obtained. The slab is 59 x 40 4.5mm(3) in size. The average pump power is 11.2kW, the repetition rate is 1kHz, and the duty cycle 20%. During the running time of 1s, the output energy of the laser has a fluctuation with the maximal output energy at 2.06J, and the maximal output average power is 2.06kW. At the end of the second, the output energy declines to about 50% compared to the beginning. The thermal effects can be improved with one slab cooled by water. The experimental results are consistent with calculation data.

The condensation and sulfonation of furfuryl alcohol (FA) and FA with tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC) and the crosslinking product structures were studied by means of solid-state C-13 NMR. The reaction of formalin with FA linear oligomer terminated by 2-methyl furan took place in the presence of the phase transfer catalyst (C4H9)4N+I-. The reaction of the terminated oligomer with a large amount of sulfuric acid as well as the former reaction was examined. The effects of some main reaction conditions on the crosslinking condensation and sulfonation were also discussed.

Silicon carbide, which has many polytypic modifications of a very simple and very symmetric structure, is an excellent model system for exploring, the relationship between chemical shift, long-range dipolar shielding, and crystal structure in network solids. A simple McConnell equation treatment of bond anisotropy effects in a poly type predicts chemical shifts for silicon and carbon sites which agree well with the experiment, provided that contributions from bonds up to 100 A are included in the calculation. The calculated chemical shifts depend on three factors: the layer stacking sequence, electrical centre of gravity, and the spacings between silicon and carbon layers. The assignment of peaks to lattice sites is proved possible for three polytypes (6H, 15R, and 3C). The fact that the calculated chemical shifts are very sensitive to layer spacings provides us a potential way to detennine and refine a crystal structure. In this work, the layer spacings of 6H SiC have been calculated and are within X-ray standard deviations. Under this premise, the layer spacings of 15R have been detennined. 29Si and 13C single crystal nmr studies of 6H SiC polytype indicate that all silicons and carbons are magnetically anisotropic. The relationship between a magnetic shielding tensor component and layer spacings has been derived. The comparisons between experimental and semi-empirical chemical shielding tensor components indicate that the paramagnetic shielding of silicon should be included in the single crystal chemical shift calculation.

A new class of hybrid ruteno-cuprates - such as Ru-1212 and Ru-1222 - was discovered in 1995 by Bauerfeind and collaborators. These materials present superconducting and magnetic states at low temperatures, an atypical duality in other superconductors. The superconductivity is more easily observed in Ru-1222, while Ru-1212 is a more problematic case, due to the strong effects of the preparation details in its superconducting properties, becoming the material superconductor or not. Ru-1212 presents a critical temperature that can vary between 0 and 46 K, depending on the preparation conditions, and a temperature of magnetic transition of around 132 K. The samples were prepared through solid state reactions, by using a mixture of high purity powders, followed by calcination and sinterization in the nitrogen and oxygen atmospheres. This paper shows the preparation process of Ru-1212 samples, followed by their structural and magnetic characterization.
