Quantum well states of Ag films grown on stepped Au(111) surfaces are shown to undergo lateral scattering, in analogy with surface states of vicinal Ag(111). Applying angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy we observe quantum well bands with zone-folding and gap openings driven by surface/interface step lattice scattering. Experiments performed on a curved Au(111) substrate allow us to determine a subtle terrace-size effect, i.e., a fine step-density-dependent upward shift of quantum well bands. This energy shift is explained as mainly due to the periodically stepped crystal potential offset at the interface side of the film. Finally, the surface state of the stepped Ag film is analyzed with both photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy. We observe that the stepped film interface also affects the surface state energy, which exhibits a larger terrace-size effect compared to surface states of bulk vicinal Ag(111) crystals

We systematically investigated the mechanism of the C-1 + C-1 coupling reactions using density functional theory. The activation energies of C-1 + C-1 coupling and carbon hydrogenation reactions on both flat and stepped surfaces were calculated and analyzed. Moreover, the coverages of adsorbed C-1 species were estimated, and the reaction rates of all possible C-1 + C-1 coupling pathways were quantitatively evaluated. The results suggest that the reactions of CH2 + CH2 and CH3 + C at steps are most likely to be the key C-1 + C-1 coupling steps in FT synthesis on Co catalysts. The reactions of C-2 + C-1 and C-3 + C-1 coupling also were studied; the results demonstrate that in addition to the pathways of RCH + CH2 and RCH2 + C, the coupling of RC + C and RC + CH also may contribute to the chain growth after C-1. Platinum stepped surfaces vicinal to the (1 1 0) crystallographic pole have been investigated voltammetrically in 0.1 M HClO(4) and 0.1 M H(2)SO(4) solutions. Changes in the voltammetric profile with the step density suggest the existence of two types of surface sites, that has been ascribed to linear and bidimensional domains. This result indicates the existence of important restructuring processes that separate the real surface distribution from the nominal one. The electronic properties of the surfaces have been characterized with the CO charge displacement method and the potential of zero total charge has been calculated as a function of the step density. In order to deepen the knowledge about the origin of the CO preoxidation process and the intrinsic catalytic activity of Pt superficial steps toward CO oxidation, a series of CO stripping experiments were performed on stepped Pt electrodes in acidic medium. For the occurrence of CO preoxidation, it was found that it arises (reproducibly) whenever four interconnected conditions are simultaneously fulfilled: (1) CO adsorption at potentials lower than about 0.2 V; (2) on surfaces saturated with COads; (3) in the presence of traces of CO in solution; (4) in the presence of surface steps. If any of these four conditions is not satisfied, the CO preoxidation pathway does not appear, even though the steps on the electrode surface are completely covered by CO. By controlling the removal of the CO adlayer (voltammetrically), we show that once the CO adlayer has been partially oxidized, the (111) terrace sites of stepped surfaces are released earlier than the (110) step sites. Moreover, if (110) steps are selectively decorated with CO, its oxidation occurs only at potentials ∼150 mV higher than the CO preoxidation peak. Our results systematically demonstrate that step sites are less active to oxidize CO than those ones responsible for the CO preoxidation process. Once the sites responsible for the CO preoxidation are made free, there is no apparent motion of the remaining adsorbed CO layer, suggesting that the activation of the surface controls the whole process, rather than the diffusion of COads toward hypothetically “most active sites”. Voltammetric and chronoamperometric experiments performed on partially covered CO adlayers suggest that adsorbed CO behave as a motionless species during its oxidation, in which the CO adlayer is removed piece by piece. By means of in situ FTIR experiments, the stretching frequency of CO selectively adsorbed on (110) step sites was examined. Band frequency results confirm that those molecules adsorbed on steps are fully coupled with the adsorbed CO on (111) terraces when the surface reaches full coverage.

The use of reconstructed ceramic surfaces as templates for nanopatterning has been demonstrated recently. This technique differs from the surface decoration by Au on stepped surfaces of alkali halides which has been a topic of intense research in the past. Some of the intriguing aspects related to the physical origin of the phenomena have been considered here. Based on heterogeneous nucleation of Pt vapor on wedged alumina surfaces, it has been shown that the valley sites are the preferred sites for nucleation. However, the hill sites are decorated by the particles in the present study pointing out to a different physical origin for the formation of the nanoparticles. The role of electrostatic energy reduction on the formation of such nanopatterns is discussed.

Experiments have been carried out in sulfuric and perchloric acid solutions on Pt(S)[n(110) × (100)] electrodes. The comparison between the two different electrolytic media reveals an important influence of the anion in the voltammetric features. Total charge curves have been obtained with the CO charge displacement method in combination with voltammetric measurements. From these curves, the dependence of the pztc with the step density and the strength of the anion adsorption have been analyzed. The problem of the so-called third peak is treated for a series of electrodes that contain (110) terraces, revealing the requirement of (110) domains for occurrence of this adsorption state.

We address in this paper a voltammetric study of the charge transfer processes characteristic of Pt(1 0 0) and vicinal surfaces in alkaline media. The electrochemical behavior of a series of stepped surfaces of the type Pt(S)[n(1 0 0) × (1 1 1)] has been characterized using cyclic voltammetry at different pHs, charge displacement measurements and FTIR experiments for adsorbed CO. The results from these techniques allow assigning the different peaks appearing in the voltammogram to hydrogen and/or OH adsorption on the different sites of these surfaces, namely, terrace and step sites. Additionally, the potential of zero total charge (pztc) of the electrodes was determined. The resulting pztc values shift to more negative values when the step density increases on the surface up to n = 5. FTIR spectroscopy experiments have been used to monitor the adsorption of CO on the different surfaces as well as the consequent CO oxidation, accompanying a positive potential sweep. The oxidation of adsorbed CO on (1 0 0) terraces is catalyzed by the presence of the (1 1 1) steps. The FTIR spectra revealed that CO is mostly bonded in bridge configuration at low potentials interconverting to on-top when the electrode potential is increased.

c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films were laser deposited on (001) yttria-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) substrates with different surface morphologies. The in-plane orientation of the films on smooth substrates was sensitive to the deposition conditions, often resulting in mixed orientations. However, a strongly dominating [110] YBCO//[110]YSZ orientation was obtained at a deposition temperature of 770°C. Films on substrates with surface steps, induced by depositing a homoepitaxial buffer layer or by thermally annealing the substrate, had a [110]YBCO//[100]YSZ orientation when deposited at the same temperature. It was concluded that the [110]YBCO//[100] YSZ orientation was promoted by a graphoepitaxial mechanism. Films prepared under identical conditions on smooth and stepped substrates grew with extended c axes on the former. It is proposed that the extension can be induced by disorder, invoked by a low oxygen pressure and a low density of adsorption sites. The disorder may be eliminated by either an increase of the oxygen pressure or an increase of the density of adsorption sites in the form of steps. The film microstructure influenced the microwave surface resistance, which was similar for films with one exclusive in-plane orientation and higher for films with mixed orientations. The films on the stepped surfaces had superior superconducting properties; inductive measurements gave a Tc onset of 88 K, a ΔT(90%-10%) c of 0.2 K, and the transport jc was 1.5×106 A/cm2 at 83 K, for films on substrates with homoepitaxial buffer layers.

Hydrogenation is an important process in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In this work, all the elementary steps of the hydrogenation from C to CH4 are studied on both flat and stepped Co(0001) using density functional theory (DFT). We found that (i) CH3 hydrogenation (CH3+H-->CH4) is the most difficult one among all the elementary reactions on both surfaces, possessing barriers of around 1.0 eV; (ii) the other elementary reactions have the barriers below 0.9 eV on the flat and stepped surfaces; (iii) CH2 is the least stable species among all the CHx(x=1-3) species on both surfaces; and (iv) surface restructuring may have little effect on the CHx(x=0-3) hydrogenation. The barriers of each elementary step on both flat and stepped surfaces are similar and energy profiles are also similar. The reason as to why CHx hydrogenation is not structure-sensitive is also discussed. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Tetrahexahedral Pt nanocrystals (THH Pt NCs) bound by well-defined high index crystal planes offer exceptional electrocatalytic activity, owing to a high density of low-coordination surface Pt sites. We report, herein, on methanol electrooxidation at THH Pt NC electrodes studied by a combination of electrochemical techniques and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. Pure THH Pt NC surfaces readily facilitate the dissociative chemisorption of methanol leading to poisoning by strongly adsorbed CO. Decoration of the stepped surfaces by Ru adatoms increases the tolerance to poisoning and thereby reduces the onset potential for methanol oxidation by over 100 mV. The Ru modified THH Pt NCs exhibit greatly superior catalytic currents and CO2 yields in the low potential range, when compared with a commercial PtRu alloy nanoparticle catalyst. These results are of fundamental importance in terms of model nanoparticle electrocatalytic systems of stepped surfaces and also have practical significance in the development of surface tailored, direct methanol fuel cell catalysts.

Tetrahexahedral Pt nanocrystals (THH Pt NCs), bound by high index facets, belong to an emerging class of nanomaterials that promise to bridge the gap between model and practical electrocatalysts. The atomically stepped surfaces of THH Pt NCs are extremely active for the electrooxidation of small organic molecules but they also readily accommodate the dissociative chemisorption of such species, resulting in poisoning by strongly adsorbed CO. Formic acid oxidation is an ideal reaction for studying the balance between these competing catalyst characteristics, since it can proceed by either a direct or a CO mediated pathway. Herein, we describe electrochemical and in situ FTIR spectroscopic investigations of formic acid electrooxidation at both clean and Au adatom modified THH Pt NC surfaces. The Au decoration leads to higher catalytic currents and enhanced CO2 production in the low potential range. As the CO oxidation behaviour of the catalyst is not changed by the presence of the Au, it is likely that the role of the Au is to promote the direct pathway. Beyond their fundamental importance, these results are significant in the development of stable, poison resistant anodic electrocatalysts for direct formic acid fuel cells.

Dry reforming is a promising reaction to utilise the greenhouse gases CO2 and CH4. Nickel-based catalysts are the most popular catalysts for the reaction, and the coke formation on the catalysts is the main obstacle to the commercialisation of dry reforming. In this study, the whole reaction network of dry reformation on both flat and stepped nickel catalysts (Ni(111) and Ni(211)) as well as nickel carbide (flat: Ni3C(001); stepped: Ni3C(111)) is investigated using density functional theory calculations. The overall reaction energy profiles in the free energy landscape are obtained, and kinetic analyses are utilised to evaluate the activity of the four surfaces. By careful examination of our results, we find the following regarding the activity: (i) flat surfaces are more active than stepped surfaces for the dry reforming and (ii) metallic nickel catalysts are more active than those of nickel carbide, and therefore, the phase transformation from nickel to nickel carbide will reduce the activity. With respect to the coke formation, the following is found: (i) the coke formation probability can be measured by the rate ratio of CH oxidation pathway to C oxidation pathway (r(CH)/r(C)) and the barrier of CO dissociation, (ii) on Ni(111), the coke is unlikely to form, and (iii) the coke formations on the stepped surfaces of both nickel and nickel carbide can readily occur. A deactivation scheme, using which experimental results can be rationalised, is proposed.

Nitrate reduction on palladium multilayers deposited on platinum single crystal electrodes was studied by cyclic voltammetry and FTIR spectroscopy in acid and alkaline media. The results are compared with those obtained with bulk palladium single crystals. The reaction is sensitive to the electrode surface structure, the reactivity depending on the solution pH. In acid solution nitrate was reduced at potentials below the potential of zero total charge (pztc), when the electrode is negatively charged. Competition between nitrate, hydrogen and anion adsorption and NO formation and accumulation at the surface are proposed as the main reasons for the slow reaction rate. On the bulk palladium single crystal electrodes, NO formation leads to a fast blockage of the surface resulting in a very low activity for nitrate reduction. In alkaline solution, nitrate is reduced at more positive potentials with significantly higher current being measured on the Pd multilayer on Pt(100) electrode. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The oxidation of ethanol (EtOH) at Pt(111) electrodes is dominated by the 4e path leading to acetic acid. The inclusion of surface defects such as those present on stepped surfaces leads to an increase of the reactivity towards the most desirable 12e path leading to CO2 as final product. This path is also favored when the methyl group is more oxidized, as in the case of ethylene glycol (EG) that spontaneously decomposes to CO on Pt(111) electrodes, thus showing a more effective breaking of the C-C bond. Some trends in reactivity can be envisaged when other derivative molecules are compared at well-ordered electrodes. This strategy was used in the past, but the improvement in the electrode pretreatment and the overall information available on the subject suggest that relevant information is still missing.

The electroreduction of nitrate on Pt(1 0 0) electrodes in phosphate buffer neutral solution, pH 7.2, is reported. The sensitivity of the reaction to the crystallographic order of the surface is studied through the controlled introduction of defects by using stepped surfaces with (1 0 0) terraces of different length separated by monoatomic steps, either with (1 1 1) or (1 1 0) symmetry. The results of this study show that nitrate reduction occurs mainly on the well defined (1 0 0) terraces in the potential region where H adsorption starts to decrease, allowing the nitrate anion to access the surface. Adsorbed NO has been detected as a stable intermediate in this media. An oxidation process observed at 0.8 V has been identified as leading to the formation of adsorbed NO and being responsible for a secondary reduction process observed in the subsequent negative scan. Using in situ FTIRS, ammonium was found to be the main product of nitrate reduction. This species can be oxidized at high potentials resulting in adsorbed NO and nitrate (probably with nitrite as intermediate).
