A large class of work in the robot manipulator literature deals with the kinematical resolution of redundancy based on the pseudo-inverse of the manipulator Jacobian. In this paper an alternative dynamical approach to redundancy resolution is developed which utilizes the mapping between the actuator torques and the acceleration of the end-effector, at a given dynamic state of the manipulator. The potential advantages of the approach are discussed and an example of a planar 3R manipulator following a circular end-effector trajectory is used to illustrate the proposed approach as well as to compare it with the more well-known approach based on the pseudo-inverse.

A closed-form solution formula for the kinematic control of manipulators with redundancy is derived, using the Lagrangian multiplier method. Differential relationship equivalent to the Resolved Motion Method has been also derived. The proposed method is proved to provide with the exact equilibrium state for the Resolved Motion Method. This exactness in the proposed method fixes the repeatability problem in the Resolved Motion Method, and establishes a fixed transformation from workspace to the joint space. Also the method, owing to the exactness, is demonstrated to give more accurate trajectories than the Resolved Motion Method. In addition, a new performance measure for redundancy control has been developed. This measure, if used with kinematic control methods, helps achieve dexterous movements including singularity avoidance. Compared to other measures such as the manipulability measure and the condition number, this measure tends to give superior performances in terms of preserving the repeatability property and providing with smoother joint velocity trajectories. Using the fixed transformation property, Taylor's Bounded Deviation Paths Algorithm has been extended to the redundant manipulators.

This paper presents a new strategy for controlling rigid-robot manipulators in the presence of parametric uncertainties or un-modelled dynamics. The strategy combines an adaptation law with a well known robust controller proposed by Spong, which is derived using Lyapunov's direct method. Although the tracking problem of manipulators has been successfully solved with different strategies, there are some conditions under which their efficiency is limited. Specifically, their performance decreases when unknown loading masses or model disturbances are introduced. The aim of this work is to show that the proposed strategy performs better than existing algorithms, as verified with real-time experimental results with a Puma-560 robot. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Traditional visual servoing systems do not deal with the topic of moving objects tracking. When these systems are employed to track a moving object, depending on the object velocity, visual features can go out of the image, causing the fail of the tracking task. This occurs specially when the object and the robot are both stopped and then the object starts the movement. In this work, we have employed a retina camera based on Address Event Representation (AER) in order to use events as input in the visual servoing system. The events launched by the camera indicate a pixel movement. Event visual information is processed only at the moment it occurs, reducing the response time of visual servoing systems when they are used to track moving objects.

Singularities of robot manipulators have been intensely studied in the last decades by researchers of many fields. Serial singularities produce some local loss of dexterity of the manipulator, therefore it might be desirable to search for singularityfree trajectories in the jointspace. On the other hand, parallel singularities are very dangerous for parallel manipulators, for they may provoke the local loss of platform control, and jeopardize the structural integrity of links or actuators. It is therefore utterly important to avoid parallel singularities, while operating a parallel machine. Furthermore, there might be some configurations of a parallel manipulators that are allowed by the constraints, but nevertheless are unreachable by any feasible path. The present work proposes a numerical procedure based upon Morse theory, an important branch of differential topology. Such procedure counts and identify the singularity-free regions that are cut by the singularity locus out of the configuration space, and the disjoint regions composing the configuration space of a parallel manipulator. Moreover, given any two configurations of a manipulator, a feasible or a singularity-free path connecting them can always be found, or it can be proved that none exists. Examples of applications to 3R and 6R serial manipulators, to 3UPS and 3UPU parallel wrists, to 3UPU parallel translational manipulators, and to 3RRR planar manipulators are reported in the work.

The performance indices are important tools for motion planning and design of robot manipulators. In this paper we present a collection of some of the performance indices that have generated interest in the robotics community. These indices are four different types: kinetostatic performance indices, dynamic performance indices, indices of joint limits, and finally global performance indices. In addition, we review the strategies that have been proposed to solve the problems that occur when the units of the Jacobian matrix elements are not homogeneous. At the end of this paper, we propose a set of global performance indices that can be useful in the design of robot manipulators.

Mechanical control systems have become a part of our everyday life. Systems such as automobiles, robot manipulators, mobile robots, satellites, buildings with active vibration controllers and air conditioning systems, make life easier and safer, as well as help us explore the world we live in and exploit it’s available resources. In this chapter, we examine a specific example of a mechanical control system; the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). Our contribution to the advancement of AUV research is in the area of guidance and control. We present innovative techniques to design and implement control strategies that consider the optimization of time and/or energy consumption. Recent advances in robotics, control theory, portable energy sources and automation increase our ability to create more intelligent robots, and allows us to conduct more explorations by use of autonomous vehicles. This facilitates access to higher risk areas, longer time underwater, and more efficient exploration as compared to human occupied vehicles. The use of underwater vehicles is expanding in every area of ocean science. Such vehicles are used by oceanographers, archaeologists, geologists, ocean engineers, and many others. These vehicles are designed to be agile, versatile and robust, and thus, their usage has gone from novelty to necessity for any ocean expedition.
