Maintaining object-oriented systems that use inheritance and polymorphism is difficult, since runtime information, such as which methods are actually invoked at a call site, is not visible in the static source code. We have implemented Senseo, an Eclipse plugin enhancing Eclipse's static source views with various dynamic metrics, such as runtime types, the number of objects created, or the amount of memory allocated in particular methods.

Eradication of code smells is often pointed out as a way to improve readability, extensibility and design in existing software. However, code smell detection remains time consuming and error-prone, partly due to the inherent subjectivity of the detection processes presently available. In view of mitigating the subjectivity problem, this dissertation presents a tool that automates a technique for the detection and assessment of code smells in Java source code, developed as an Eclipse plugin. The technique is based upon a Binary Logistic Regression model that uses complexity metrics as independent variables and is calibrated by expert‟s knowledge. An overview of the technique is provided, the tool is described and validated by an example case study.

Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging (DKI) is a fairly new magnetic resonance imag-ing (MRI) technique that tackles the non-gaussian motion of water in biological tissues by taking into account the restrictions imposed by tissue microstructure, which are not considered in Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), where the water diffusion is considered purely gaussian. As a result DKI provides more accurate information on biological structures and is able to detect important abnormalities which are not visible in standard DTI analysis. This work regards the development of a tool for DKI computation to be implemented as an OsiriX plugin. Thus, as OsiriX runs under Mac OS X, the pro-gram is written in Objective-C and also makes use of Apple’s Cocoa framework. The whole program is developed in the Xcode integrated development environ-ment (IDE). The plugin implements a fast heuristic constrained linear least squares al-gorithm (CLLS-H) for estimating the diffusion and kurtosis tensors, and offers the user the possibility to choose which maps are to be generated for not only standard DTI quantities such as Mean Diffusion (MD), Radial Diffusion (RD), Axial Diffusion (AD) and Fractional Anisotropy (FA), but also DKI metrics, Mean Kurtosis (MK), Radial Kurtosis (RK) and Axial Kurtosis (AK).The plugin was subjected to both a qualitative and a semi-quantitative analysis which yielded convincing results. A more accurate validation pro-cess is still being developed, after which, and with some few minor adjust-ments the plugin shall become a valid option for DKI computation

The software development industry is constantly evolving. The rise of the agile methodologies in the late 1990s, and new development tools and technologies require growing attention for everybody working within this industry. The organizations have, however, had a mixture of various processes and different process languages since a standard software development process language has not been available. A promising process meta-model called Software & Systems Process Engineering Meta- Model (SPEM) 2.0 has been released recently. This is applied by tools such as Eclipse Process Framework Composer, which is designed for implementing and maintaining processes and method content. Its aim is to support a broad variety of project types and development styles. This thesis presents the concepts of software processes, models, traditional and agile approaches, method engineering, and software process improvement. Some of the most well-known methodologies (RUP, OpenUP, OpenMethod, XP and Scrum) are also introduced with a comparison provided between them. The main focus is on the Eclipse Process Framework and SPEM 2.0, their capabilities, usage and modeling. As a proof of concept, I present a case study of modeling OpenMethod with EPF Composer and SPEM 2.0. The results show that the new meta-model and tool have made it possible to easily manage method content, publish versions with customized content, and connect project tools (such as MS Project) with the process content. The software process modeling also acts as a process improvement activity.

Tämädiplomityö tutkii kuinka Eclipse -ympäristöä voidaan käyttää testitapausten generoinnissa. Eräs diplomityön pääaiheista on tutkia voidaanko olemassa olevilla Eclipsen komponenteilla parantaa symboolitietoutta, jotta testitapausten generointiin saataisiin lisää tietoa. Tarkempaa tietoa kerrotaan Eclipsen komponenteista joita voidaan käyttää apuna testitapausten generoinnissa.

Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex condition with pulmonary and extra-pulmonary manifestations. This study describes the heterogeneity of COPD in a large and well characterised and controlled COPD cohort (ECLIPSE). Methods We studied 2164 clinically stable COPD patients, 337 smokers with normal lung function and 245 never smokers. In these individuals, we measured clinical parameters, nutritional status, spirometry, exercise tolerance, and amount of emphysema by computed tomography. Results COPD patients were slightly older than controls and had more pack years of smoking than smokers with normal lung function. Co-morbidities were more prevalent in COPD patients than in controls, and occurred to the same extent irrespective of the GOLD stage. The severity of airflow limitation in COPD patients was poorly related to the degree of breathlessness, health status, presence of co-morbidity, exercise capacity and number of exacerbations reported in the year before the study. The distribution of these variables within each GOLD stage was wide. Even in subjects with severe airflow obstruction, a substantial proportion did not report symptoms, exacerbations or exercise limitation. The amount of emphysema increased with GOLD severity. The prevalence of bronchiectasis was low (4%) but also increased with GOLD stage. Some gender differences were also identified. Conclusions The clinical manifestations of COPD are highly variable and the degree of airflow limitation does not capture the heterogeneity of the disease.

The development of software tools begun as the first computers were built. The current generation of development environments offers a common interface to access multiple software tools and often also provide a possibility to build custom tools as extensions to the existing development environment. Eclipse is an open source development environment that offers good starting point for developing custom extensions. This thesis presents a software tool to aid the development of context-aware applications on Multi-User Publishing Environment (MUPE) platform. The tool is implemented as an Eclipse plug-in. The tool allows developer to include external server side contexts to their MUPE applications. The tool allows additional context sources to be added through the Eclipse's extension point mechanism. The thesis describes how the tool was designed and implemented. The implementation consists of tool core component part and an additional context source extension part. Tool core component is responsible for the actual context addition and also provides the needed user interface elements to the Eclipse workbench. Context source component provides the needed context source related information to the core component. As part of the work an update site feature was also implemented for distributing the tool through Eclipse update mechanism.
