A biomass derived carbon, a commercial microporous carbon and a xerogel mesoporous carbon catalysts were used in the study of α-pinene methoxilation reaction and the influence of textural and physical–chemical properties of the carbons was evaluated. Biomass carbon presented the higher activity, whereas the commercial one is the less active in the conditions studied. The main product of the reaction was α-terpinyl methyl ether and good values of selectivity were obtained over all the catalysts. A kinetic model was developed assuming that the α-pinene is consumed according to the parallel reaction network. The kinetic model presents high quality fittings to the experimental concentration profiles. These results show that it is possible to activate a waste residue using H3PO4 and convert it to high added value product such as acid catalyst.

The ability of adult cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), to distinguish and respond to enantiomers of α-pinene was investigated with electrophysiological and behavioral methods. Electroantennogram recordings using mixtures of the enantiomers at saturating dose levels, and single unit electrophysiology, indicated that the two forms were detected by the same receptor neurons. The relative size of the electroantennogram response was higher for the (−) compared to the (+) form, indicating greater affinity for the (−) form at the level of the dendrites. Behavioral assays investigated the ability of moths to discriminate between, and respond to the (+) and (−) forms of α-pinene. Moths with no odor conditioning showed an innate preference for (+)-α-pinene. This preference displayed by naïve moths was not significantly different from the preferences of moths conditioned on (+)-α-pinene. However, we found a significant difference in preference between moths conditioned on the (−) enantiomer compared to naïve moths and moths conditioned on (+)-α-pinene, showing that learning plays an important role in the behavioral response. Moths are less able to distinguish between enantiomers of α-pinene than different odors (e.g., phenylacetaldehyde versus (−)-α-pinene) in learning experiments. The relevance of receptor discrimination of enantiomers and learning ability of the moths in host plant choice is discussed.

A synthesis of new bidentate pyridines has been developed, starting from ?-pinene. A copper complex of the pyridine-oxazoline ligands catalyzes asym. allylic oxidn. of cyclic olefins with good conversion rates and acceptable enantioselectivity (?67% ee). The imidazolium salt I has been identified as a precursor of the N,N'-unsym. N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, which upon complexation with palladium, catalyzed the intramol. amide enolate ?-arylation leading to oxindole in excellent yield but with low enantioselectivity.

The alkoxylation of a-pinene was carried out over poly(vinyl alcohol) containing sulfonic acid groups, as catalyst. The main product of a-pinene alkoxylation was a-terpinyl methyl ether being also formed bornyl methyl ether, fenchyl methyl ether, limonene and terpinolene as by-products. The absorption band at 1037 cm-1 in the FTIR spectrum of PVA_SSA40 (PVA membrane containing 40% of –OH groups esterified with SSA) which does not appear in the spectrum of PVA, indicates the presence of the sulfonic acid groups. The catalytic activity of PVA with sulfonic acid groups increases when the amount of sulfosuccinic acid used in the polymer crosslinking is increased from 5% to 40%. However, when the crosslinking degree increases from 20% to 40%, the conversion of a-pinene increases only slightly. Good values of selectivity to a-terpinyl methyl ether were obtained over poly(vinyl alcohol) with sulfonic acid groups. A simple kinetic model, which fits experimental concentration data quite well, was developed.

The gas-phase ozonolysis of beta-pinene was studied in static chamber experiments, using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometric and flame ionisation detection to separate and detect products. A range of multifunctional organic acids-including pinic acid, norpinic acid, pinalic-3- acid, pinalic-4-acid, norpinalic acid and OH-pinalic acid-were identified in the condensed phase after derivatisation. Formation yields for these products under systematically varying reaction conditions (by adding different OH radical scavengers and Criegee intermediate scavengers) were investigated and compared with those observed from alpha-pinene ozonolysis, allowing detailed information on product formation mechanisms to be elucidated. In addition, branching ratios for the initial steps of the reaction were inferred from quantitative measurements of primary carbonyl formation. Atmospheric implications of this work are discussed.

Gas-phase ozonolysis of alpha-pinene was studied in static chamber experiments under 'OH-free' conditions. A range of multifunctional products-in particular low-volatility carboxylic acids-were identified in the condensed phase using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry after derivatisation. The dependence of product yields on reaction conditions (humidity, choice of OH radical scavengers, added Criegee intermediate scavengers, NO2 etc.) was investigated to probe the mechanisms of formation of these products; additional information was obtained by studying the ozonolysis of an enal and an enone derived from alpha-pinene. On the basis of experimental findings, previously suggested mechanisms were evaluated and detailed gas-phase mechanisms were developed to explain the observed product formation. Atmospheric implications of this work are discussed.

Highly active mesoporous SO4/ZrO2/HMS (hexagonal mesoroporous silica) solid acid catalysts with tuneable sulphated zirconia (SZ) content have been prepared for the liquid phase isomerisation of α-pinene. The mesoporous HMS framework is preserved during the grafting process as evidenced by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and porosimetry with all SO4/ZrO2/HMS materials possessing average pore-diameters ∼20 Å. XRD confirms the presence of a stabilized tetragonal phase of nanoparticulate ZrO2, with no evidence for zirconia phase separation or the formation of discrete crystallites, consistent with a uniform and highly dispersed SZ coating. The activity towards α-pinene isomerisation scales linearly with Zr loading, while the specific activities are an order of magnitude greater than attainable by conventional methodologies (∼1 versus 0.08 mol h−1 g Zr−1).

Isomerisation of α-pinene oxide to campholenic aldehyde was performed by immobilising zinc triflate based catalysts on the surface of a spinning disc reactor (SDR). Two types of catalyst have been studied and the influence of operating parameters such as rotational speed, feed flow rate and reaction temperature on conversion and selectivity towards campholenic aldehyde has been investigated in considerable detail. The findings of the study suggest that immobilising the catalyst on the reactor surface and performing the reaction in continuous mode has potential for achieving benefits of Green Chemical Technology (GCT).

A range of mesoporous sulphated zirconias with tuneable structural and catalytic properties have been prepared by direct impregnation. The surface sulphate coverage can be readily varied, achieving a maximum value of ∼0.2 monolayers. High-temperature calcination induces the crystallisation of tetragonal zirconia while suppressing the monoclinic phase and enhances surface acidity. Superacid sites only appear above a critical threshold SO4 coverage of 0.08 mL (corresponding to 0.44 wt% total S). Sulphated zirconias show good activity towards α-pinene isomerisation of under mild conditions. Conversion correlates with the number Brønsted acid sites, while the selectivity towards mono- versus polycyclic products depends on the corresponding acid site strength; superacidity promotes limonene formation over camphene.
