A novel electroactive silsesquioxane precursor, N-(4-aminophenyl)-M-(4'-(3-triethoxysilyl-propyl-ureido) phenyl-1,4-quinonenediimine) (ATQD), was successfully synthesized from the emeraldine form of amino-capped aniline trimers via a one-step coupling reaction and subsequent purification by column chromatography. The physicochemical properties of ATQD were characterized using mass spectrometry as well as by nuclear magnetic resonance and UV-vis spectroscopy. Analysis by cyclic voltammetry confirmed that the intrinsic electroactivity of ATQD was maintained upon protonic acid doping, exhibiting two distinct reversible oxidative states, similar to polyaniline. The aromatic amine terminals of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of ATQD on glass substrates were covalently modified with an adhesive oligopeptide, cyclic Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) (ATQD-RGD). The mean height of the monolayer coating on the surfaces was similar to 3 nm, as measured by atomic force microscopy. The biocompatibility of the novel electroactive substrates was evaluated using PC12 pheochromocytoma cells, an established cell line of neural origin. The bioactive, derivatized electroactive scaffold material, ATQD-RGD, supported PC12 cell adhesion and proliferation, similar to control tissue-culture-treated polystyrene surfaces.

The chain structure of polyaniline doped with HCl or CF_3COOH has been investigated by FTIR, solid state ~(13)CNMR, resonance laser Raman and UV-VIS spectroscopies. The results show that during the protonic acid doping, a partial redox reaction takes place between the quinone-diimine and benzene-diamine units and it leads to a long conjugate system with a certain charge distribution.

In the present article it is shown that a corona discharge can be employed to dope thin films of polyaniline (PANI) coated on poly(ethylene terephthalate) films, allowing the electrical conductivity to be tuned within the range 10(-10) to 0.3 S cm(-1). A study of the effect of different corona conditions, namely corona treatment for positive and negative polarities, air humidity, treatment time, corona current, and the geometry of the corona triode, on the electrical conductivity of the polyaniline is presented. The results indicate that the corona discharge leads to protonic doping of polyaniline similar to that which occurs in conventional protonic acid solution doping. Atomic force microscopic analysis shows that, as the PANI is exposed to the corona discharge, its globular morphology is disrupted leading to the appearance of droplet-like features and a significant decrease in the average height and surface roughness. Doping by corona discharge presents several advantages over the conventional solution method namely that it is a dry process which does not require use of chemicals reagents, and which is both rapid and avoids dopant migration. The latter can be important for applications of PANI in microelectronic devices. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(00)01608-X].

The interaction between polyaniline (PAn) and 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT) was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible spectroscopy. The results show that the polymerization-depolymerization reaction of DMcT or its dilithium salt Li(2)DMcT is a kinetically quasi-reversible process. PAn exhibits very weak electrochemical activity in neutral propylene carbonate. After doping with protonic acid, such as hydrochloric acid or maleic acid etc., however, it shows an extensively enhanced electroactivity. For the complex system, PAn-DMcT or PAn-Li(2)DMcT, polyaniline has no catalytic activity for the electrochemical polymerization-depolymerization reaction of DMcT or DMcT(2-). Instead, the enhancement of the electrochemical redox activity of PAn-DMcT system compared with that of PAn, DMcT, Li(2)DMcT, and PAn-Li(2)DMcT comes from the protonic doping of PAn by DMcT.

Organic crystals possess extremely large optical nonlinearity compared to inorganic crystals. Also organic compounds have the amenability for synthesis and scope for introducing desirable characteristics by inclusions. A wide variety of organic materials having electron donor and acceptor groups, generate high order of nonlinearity. In the present work, a new nonlinear optical crystal, L-citrulline oxalate (LCO) based on the aminoacid L-citrulline was grown using slow evaporation technique. Structural characterization was carried out by single crystal XRD. It crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric, orthorhombic structure with space group P21 P21 P21. Functional groups present in the sample were identified by Fourier transform infra red (FTIR) and FT-Raman spectral analysis. On studying the FTIR and Raman spectra of the precursors L-citrulline and oxalic acid, used for growing L-citrulline oxalate crystal, it is found that the significant peaks of the precursors are present in the spectra of the L-citrulline oxalate crystal . This observation along with the presence of NH3 + group in the spectra of L-citrulline oxalate, confirms the formation of the charge transfer complex

Polyaniline (PAni) has been classified as an intractable polymer, particularly in its conducting form, the emeraldine salt (ES). Therefore one can consider the mixture of water and PAni as a suspension. The conducting form of PAni can be obtained by a doping process known as acid doping, in which a strong acid turns PAni from its insulating form, the emeraldine base (EB), into the conducting form, the emeraldine salt. With the objective of establishing a correlation between the doping level and the zeta potential of polyaniline dispersions, polyaniline + HCl aqueous suspensions were prepared. Positive zeta potential values for the various suspensions of PAni showed that it acquired positive charges after the doping process. It was also observed an increase in zeta potential values as HCl concentration increased, which could be correlated to UV-visible spectra of PAni suspensions.

A series of oligoaniline-functionalized mono- and bis-topic terpyridine ligands, i.e. C6H5[N(R)C6H4](n)TPY (R = H, butyl, tert-butyloxycarbonyl; n = 1-4; TPY = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridyl) and TPYC6H4[N(R)C6H4](m)TPY (R = H, tert-butyloxycarbonyl; m = 2, 4), and the corresponding monoand bis-nuclear ruthenium(II) complexes have been synthesized and verified. The spectroscopic results indicate that two kinds of pi-pi* transitions from TPY and oligoaniline fragments of ligands strongly shift to lower energy, and the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition ((MLCT)-M-1) bands of all obtained complexes are considerably red-shifted (Delta lambda(max) = 22-64 nm) and their intensities become much more intense (approximately 4-6 times), compared with those of the reported complex [Ru(TPY)(2)](2+). Moreover, the spectroscopic properties of the ligands and complexes with longer oligoaniline units (n = 3, 4) are markedly influenced by the external stimulus, such as the oxidation and proton acid doping.

A convenient way to make water-soluble or water-dispersible conducting polyaniline was given by employing protonic acid dopants containing hydrophilic ethyleneoxide oligomer as counter-anion. The conducting polyaniline possessed electrical conductivity in the range of 10(-3) to 10(-2) S/cm, depending on the dopant, and it displayed excellent electrochemical redox reversibility in non-aqueous system.

In the present study, radio frequency plasma polymerization technique is used to prepare thin films of polyaniline, polypyrrole, poly N-methyl pyrrole and polythiophene. The thermal characterization of these films is carried out using transverse probe beam deflection method. Electrical conductivity and band gaps are also determined. The effect of iodine doping on electrical conductivity and the rate of heat diffusion is explored.Bulk samples of poyaniline and polypyrrole in powder form are synthesized by chemical route. Open photoacoustic cell configuration is employed for the thermal characterization of these samples. The effect of acid doping on heat diffusion in these bulk samples of polyaniline is also investigated. The variation of electrical conductivity of doped polyaniline and polypyrrole with temperature is also studied for drawing conclusion on the nature of conduction in these samples. In order to improve the processability of polyaniline and polypyrrole, these polymers are incorporated into a host matrix of poly vinyl chloride. Measurements of thermal diffusivity and electrical conductivity of these samples are carried out to investigate the variation of these quantities as a function of the content of polyvinyl chloride.

X-ray irradiation is shown to affect electronic properties of polyaniline (PANi) in composite Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of PANi and cadmium stearate, in a similar way to acid doping. The time it takes for the shift in the UV-vis spectra, characteristic of PANi doping, increases linearly with the film thickness, thus indicating a surface-controlled process. The humidity of the environment under which the films are irradiated is also of extreme importance. No shin is observed under vacuum or under dry atmospheres of N-2, O-2 and Ar. For humid environments the time for the shift decreases with increasing relative humidity.

Composite Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from polyaniline and cadmium stearate have been irradiated with ionizing X-rays for various exposure times. In the initial stages of X-ray irradiation the absorption peak at 580 nm of an as-deposited film was seen to decrease with a concomitant increase in the absorption in the long wavelength region (700-1100 nm). Upon prolonging the irradiation, the absorption maximum shifted to 800 nm with the LB film color changing to green, characteristic of acid doped polyaniline. The changes in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra upon irradiation are also similar to those observed upon acid doping of polyaniline. When compared with acid doping, two major differences were observed for the LB films exposed to X-rays. First, the packing order of the cadmium stearate domains in the composite LB films - as observed by X-ray diffraction - is not affected by the X-ray irradiation. In addition, no significant increase in the DC conductivity was noted after the X-ray exposure whereas similar LB films have their conductivity increased by an order of magnitude upon acid doping. These differences may be explained by considering that the inter-domain contribution to the conductivity is increased by the acid doping because the insulating cadmium stearate domains are destroyed, which does not occur with the X-ray irradiation. Membranes of Poly(2,5-benzimidazole) (ABPBI), prepared by polycondensation in polyphosphoric acid, were characterized from the fuel cell application point of view: mechanical properties of the membranes for different acid doping levels, thermal stability, permeability for the different gases/vapors susceptible of use in the cell (hydrogen, oxygen, methanol and ethanol), electro-osmotic water drag coefficient, oxidation stability to hydroxyl radicals, phosphoric acid leaching rate and, finally, in-plane membrane conductivity. ABPBI membranes presented an excellent thermal stability, above 500 degrees C in oxygen, suitable mechanical properties for high phosphoric acid doping levels, a low methanol and ethanol limiting permeation currents, and oxygen permeability compared to Nafion membranes, and a low phosphoric acid leaching rate when exposed to water vapor. On the contrary, hydrogen permeation current was higher than that of Nafion, and the chemical stability was very limited. Membrane conductivity achieved 0.07 S cm(-1) after equilibration with a humid environment. Fuel cell tests showed reasonable good performances, with a maximum power peak of 170 mW cm(-2) for H-2/air at 170 degrees C operating under a humidified hydrogen stream, 39.9 mW cm(-2) for CH3OH/O-2 at 200 degrees C for a methanol/water weight ratio of 1: 2, and 31.5 mW cm(-2) for CH3CH2OH/O-2 at the same conditions than for methanol. The chemical polymerization of ortho-methylaniline (MAn) is performed in aqueous solution of six protonic acids. The MAn polymerization conversion, and the electrical conductivity and doping level as well as molecular chain structure of the polymers obtained depend not only on the acid concentration but also on their acidity and molecular size.
