The combination of ionic liquids (ILs) and supercritical CO2 (scCO2) allows efficient catalytic processes to be developed. Catalyst separation is generally a major challenge when enzymes or homogeneous organometallic catalysts are utilised for reactions, and IL–scCO2 systems address these separation problems, facilitating the recycling or continual use of the catalyst. Typically these systems involve a catalyst being dissolved in an IL and this is where it remains during the process, with scCO2 extracting the products from the IL (catalyst) phase. ILs and many catalysts are not soluble in scCO2 and this facilitates the clean separation of products from the catalyst and IL. When the pressure is reduced in a collection chamber, the scCO2 returns to CO2 gas and products can be obtained without contamination of catalyst or solvents. It is possible to operate IL–scCO2 systems in a continuous flow manner and this further improves the efficiency and industrial potential of these systems. This chapter will introduce the fundamental properties of these multiphase catalytic systems. It will also highlight key examples of catalytic processes from the academic literature which illustrate the benefits of utilising this combination of solvents for catalysis
Synthesis of Chiral Benzimidazolylidenes from 1,10-Phenathrolines and 1,10-Phenathroline-2,9-dione /
Resumo:
A^-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become the focus of much interest as ancillary ligands for transition metal catalysts in recent years. Their structural variability and strong cy-donation properties have led to the preparation of demonstrably useful organometallic catalysts. Among the three general structural types of NHCs (imidazolylidenes, imidazolinylidenes, and benzimidazolylidenes), benzimidazolylidenes are the least investigated because of the limitation of current synthetic approaches. The preparation of chiral analogues is even more challenging. Previously, our group has demonstrated an alternative approach to synthesizing benzimidazolylidenes with a tetracyclic framework in three steps from 1,10-phenanthroline. This thesis is focused on approaches to chiral benzimidazolylidenes derived from substituted 1,10-phenanthrolines. A key step in the preparation of these ligands involves a reduction of the pyridyl rings in 1,10-phenanthrolines. Chirality can be introduced to phenanthrolines before, during, or after the reduction as illustrated by three approaches: 1) de novo construction of the phenanthroline from chiral ketones with endo and exo faces to provide a degree of diastereoselectivity during subsequent reduction; 2) introduction of substituents into the 2- and 2,9- position of phenanthroline by nucleophilic aromatic substitution, followed by a reduction-resolution sequence; and 3) use of the protected octahydrophenanthroline as a substrate for chiral induction a to nitrogen.

This Review article discusses dendritic organometallic catalysis, originating from catalytic moieties present at the peripheries of a dendrimer. The presence of multiple catalytic moieties at the dendrimer peripheries leads to a positive effect in majority of the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, although a negative or a marginal improvement in the catalytic effect with respect to the corresponding monomeric catalyst were also encountered. A number of recent examples that attempt to rationalize the origin of the dendrimer effect in catalysis are discussed. Further a tabular survey is provided by categorizing the dendritic catalysts and their influence on catalysis. Recent studies on the multivalent dendritic catalysts, wherein varied number of catalytic moieties is installed within a given generation, are utilized to emphasize the role of clustering catalytic moieties at the peripheries of the dendrimers in influencing the catalysis. Organometallic hydrogen transfer and dehydrogenation provide straightforward atom efficient routes from alcohols to a variety of chemical products. The potential of these reactions to enable the conversion of biomass to value added chemicals is discussed, with reference to the products that can be prepared from aliphatic alcohols in good isolated yield.

We have determined the structure of a complex rhodium carbonyl chloride [Rh(CO)(2)Cl] molecule adsorbed on the TiO2 (110) surface by the normal incidence x-ray standing wave technique. The data show that the technique is applicable to reducible oxide systems and that the dominant adsorbed species is undissociated with Rh binding atop bridging oxygen and to the Cl found close to the fivefold coordinated Ti ions in the surface. A minority geminal dicarboryl species, where Rh-Cl bond scission has occurred, is found bridging the bridging oxygen ions forming a high-symmetry site.

The synthesis of nickel catalysts for industrial applications is relatively simple; however, nickel oxidation is usually difficult to avoid, which makes it challenging to optimize catalytic activities, metal loadings, and high-temperature activation steps. A robust, oxidation-resistant and very active nickel catalyst was prepared by controlled decomposition of the organometallic precursor [bis(1,5-cyclooctadiene)nickel(0)], Ni(COD)(2), over silica-coated magnetite (Fe3O4@SiO2). The sample is mostly Ni(0), and surface oxidized species formed after exposure to air are easily reduced in situ during hydrogenation of cyclohexene under mild conditions recovering the initial activity. This unique behavior may benefit several other reactions that are likely to proceed via Ni heterogeneous catalysis.

In order to study the efficiencies of catalytic moieties within and across dendrimer generations, partially and fully functionalized dendrimers were synthesized. Poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimers from zero to three generations, presenting 3 to 24 peripheral functionalities, were utilized to prepare as many as 12 catalysts. The dendrimer peripheries were partially and fully functionalized with triphenylphosphine in the first instance. A rhodium(I) metal complexation was performed subsequently to afford multivalent dendritic catalysts, both within and across generations. Upon synthesis, the dendritic catalysts were tested in the hydrogenation of styrene, in a substrate-to-catalyst ratio of 1:0.001. Turn-over-numbers were evaluated for each catalyst, from which significant increases in the catalytic activities were identified for multivalent catalysts than monovalent catalysts, both within and across generations. Dendrimers are ideal platforms to study multivalent effects due to the presence of uniform end groups at their peripheries. This report concerns with a study of multivalent dendritic catalysts, both within and across dendrimer generations, and their effects to mediate C-C bond forming reactions on multivalent substrates that have two and three acrylate reactive sites. As many as fourteen multivalent dendritic catalysts were prepared using 0-3 generations of poly(propyl ether imine) dendrimers, incorporated with Pd(II) catalytic sites, both within and across the dendrimer generations. C-C Bond forming reactions of these substrates with iodobenzene, mediated by uniform concentration of the metal across all catalysts, showed formation of partially and fully functionalized cinnamates in varying ratios, depending on the extent of clustering of catalytic moieties at the peripheries of dendrimers within a dendrimer generation. In a given generation, higher clustering of catalytic moieties greatly assisted multiple C-C bond formations than presenting the same in lesser number. The studies demonstrate true benefits of clustering catalytic moieties within a dendrimer generation and the beneficial effects applicable to catalysis of substrates presenting more than one reactive center.
