The edge-to-edge matching model has been further developed along with the Cu/Cr system as an example. The conditions for zigzag atom rows to be matching directions are included and the critical value of interatomic spacing misfit along matching directions and the critical value of d-value mismatch between matching planes are proposed in the new version of the model. Convergent beam Kikuchi diffraction was used to accurately determine the orientation relationships (ORs) between austenite and martensite, and between austenite and granular bainite in two Fe-Ni-Mn-C alloys. Both martensite and granular bainite have the same crystallographic characteristics with the OR: (111)(A)parallel to(101)(F), [1 (1) over bar0](A) 2.5degrees +/- 2degrees from [1 (1) over bar(1) over bar](B).

A Fe-22.5%Cr-4.53%Ni-3.0%Mo duplex stainless steel was solution treated at 1,325 A degrees C for 1 h, quenched in water and isothermally treated at 900 A degrees C for 5,000 s. The crystallography of austenite was studied using EBSD technique. Intragranular austenite particles formed from delta ferrite are shown to nucleate on inclusions, and to be subdivided in twin-related sub-particles. Intragranular austenite appears to have planar-only orientation relationships with the ferrite matrix, close to Kurdjumov-Sachs and Nishyiama-Wassermann, but not related to a conjugate direction. Samples treated at 900 A degrees C underwent sparse formation of sigma phase and pronounced growth of elongated austenite particles, very similar to acicular ferrite.

The orientation relationships between hexagonal Mo2C precipitates (H) in ferrite (B) have been determined by electron diffraction to an accuracy of +/-2degrees. With one exception, the 19 results are consistent with the previously reported Pitsch and Schrader (P/S) orientation relationship. However, these more accurate determinations show clearly that there is a systematic deviation of up to 5.5degrees from the exact P/S relationship and that this deviation consists of a small rotation about the parallel close packed directions-[100](B)//[2 (1) over bar(1) over bar0](H). The long direction of the Mo2C needles has been determined unequivocally in terms of the orientation relationship to be [100](B)//[2 (1) over bar(1) over bar0](H). Moire fringes between precipitate and matrix have been used to improve the accuracy of the orientation relationship results and to determine the lattice parameters of the carbide precipitates investigated. The Moire fringe analysis has shown small systematic departures from the exact parallelism between [100](B) and [2 (1) over bar(1) over bar0](H) along the length of Mo2C needles and a lowering of the carbide lattice parameter that is consistent with the replacement of Mo by Fe in the carbide. The orientation relationship results, including the observed systematic deviation from the exact P/S relationship, are shown to be consistent with the edge-to-edge model. Orientation relationships between Mg24Y5 precipitates and matrix in a Mg-Y alloy were accurately determined using Kikuchi line diffraction. The Burgers relationship with habit planes of {10 (1) over bar0}(H) and {31 (4) over bar0}(H) were observed for all precipitates. Compared with the Mg17Al12 precipitate in AZ91, the precipitation hardening effect in this alloy was significantly increased. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Aluminium phosphide (AlP) particles arc often suggested to be the nucleation site for eutectic silicon in Al-Si alloys, since both the crystal structure and lattice parameter of AlP (crystal structure: cubic K(4) over bar m; lattice parameter: 5.421 Angstrom) are close to that of silicon (cubic Fd3m, 5.431 Angstrom), and the melting point is higher than the Al-Si eutectic temperature. However, the crystallographic relationships between AlP particles and the surrounding eutectic silicon are seldom reported due to the difficulty in analysing the AlP particles, which react with water during sample preparation for polishing. in this study, the orientation relationships between AlP and Si are analysed by transmission electron microscopy using focused ion-beam milling for sample preparation to investigate the nucleation mechanism of eutectic silicon on AlP. The results show a clear and direct lattice relationship between centrally located AlP particles and the surrounding silicon in the hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy.

The edge-to-edge matching model for describing the interfacial crystallographic characteristics between two phases that are related by reproducible orientation relationships has been applied to the typical grain refiners in aluminum alloys. Excellent atomic matching between Al3Ti nucleating substrates, known to be effective nucleation sites for primary Al, and the Al matrix in both close packed directions and close packed planes containing these directions have been identified. The crystallographic features of the grain refiner and the Al matrix are very consistent with the edge-to-edge matching model. For three other typical grain refiners for Al alloys, TiC (when a = 0.4328 nm), TiB2 and AIB(2), the matching only occurs between the close packed directions in both phases and between the second close packed plane of the Al matrix and the second close packed plane of the refiners. According to the model, it is predicted that Al3Ti is a more powerful nucleating substrate for Al alloy than TiC, TiB2 and AlB2. This agrees with the previous experimental results. The present work shows that the edge-to-edge matching model has the potential to be a powerful tool in discovering new and more powerful grain refiners for Al alloys. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. The edge-to-edge matching crystallographic model has been used to predict all the orientation relationships (OR) between crystals that have simple hexagonal close packed (HCP) and body-centered cubic (BCC) structures. Using the critical values for the interatomic spacing misfit along the matching directions and the cl-value mismatch between matching planes, the model predicted all the four common ORs, namely the Burgers OR, the Potter OR, the Pitsch-Schrader OR and the Rong Dunlop OR, together with the corresponding habit planes. Taking the c(H)/a(H) and a(H)/a(B) ratios as variables, where H and B denote the HCP and BCC structures respectively, the model also predicted the relationship between these variables and the four ORs. These predictions are perfectly consistent with the published experimental results. As was the case in the FCC/BCC system, the edge-to-edge matching model has been shown to be a powerful tool for predicting the crystallographic features of diffusion-controlled phase transformations. A model for the crystallography and morphology of diffusion-controlled phase transformations - edge-to-edge matching - has been used to predict the orientation relationships (OR) and habit planes of precipitates Mg17Al12 in Mg-Al alloy, Mg24Y5 in Mg-Y alloy and alpha-Mn in Mg-Mn alloy. Based on the crystal structures and lattice parameters only, the model predicts that the possible ORs between Mg17Al12 and Mg matrix are the near Burgers OR, the Potter OR, the Gjonnes-Ostmoe OR and the Crawley OR. In the Mg-Y alloy, the OR between Mg24Y5 precipitates and the Mg matrix is predicted to be the Burgers OR only. The model also predicts that there are no reproducible ORs between alpha-Mn and Mg in the Mg-Mn alloy. Combining the edge-to-edge matching model and W. Zhang's Deltag approach, the habit plane and side facets of the precipitate for each OR can be determined. All the predicted ORs and the corresponding habit planes in Mg-Al and Mg-Y alloys agree very well with the experimental results. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The edge-to-edge matching model, which was originally developed for predicting crystallographic features in diffusional phase transformations in solids, has been used to understand the formation of in-plane textures in TiSi2 (C49) thin films on Si single crystal (001)si surface. The model predicts all the four previously reported orientation relationships between C49 and Si substrate based on the actual atom matching across the interface and the basic crystallographic data only. The model has strong potential to be used to develop new thin film materials. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The orientation relationship (OR) between the beta(Zn) phase and the alpha(Al) phase and the corresponding habit planes in a Zn-Al eutectoid alloy were accurately determined using convergent beam Kikuchi line diffraction patterns. In addition to the previously reported OR. [11 (2) over bar0](beta)parallel to[110](alpha), (0002)(beta)parallel to ((1) over bar 11)alpha, two new ORs were observed. They are: [11 (2) over bar0](beta)parallel to [110], ((1) over bar 101)(beta) 0.82 degrees from (002)(alpha) and [(1) over bar 100](beta)parallel to[112](alpha), (0002)(beta) 4.5 degrees from (111)(alpha). These ORs can be explained and understood using the recently developed edge-to-edge matching model. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The convergent beam Kikuchi line diffraction technique has been used to accurately determine the orientation relationships between bainitic ferrite and retained austenite in a hard bainitic steel. A reproducible orientation relationship has been uniquely observed for both the upper and lower bainite. It is [GRAPHICS] However, the habit plane of upper bainite is different from that of lower bainite. The former has habit plane that is either within 5 degrees of (221)(A) or of (259)(A). The latter only corresponds with a habit plane that is within 5 degrees of (259)(A). The determined orientation relationship is completely consistent with reported results determined using the same technique with an accuracy of +/- 0.5 degrees in lath martensite in an Fe-20 wt.% Ni-6 wt.% Mn alloy and in a low carbon low alloy steel. It also agrees well with the orientation relationship between granular bainite and austenite in an Fe-19 wt.% Ni-3.5 wt.% Mn-0.15 wt.% C steel. Hence it is believed that, at least from a crystallographic point view, the bainite transformation has the characteristics of martensitic transformation. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Offering important counterpoint to work identifying team influences stimulating creative expression of individual differences in goal orientation, we develop cross-level theory establishing that team bureaucratic practices (centralization and formalization) constrain creative expression. Speaking to the tension between bureaucracy and creativity, findings indicate that this influence is not only negative and that effects of centralization and formalization differ. Surveying 330 employees in 95 teams at the Taiwan Customs Bureau, we found that learning and "performance avoid" goal orientations had, respectively, stronger positive and weaker negative relationships with creativity under low centralization. A "performance- prove" orientation was positively related to creativity under low formalization. © Academy of Management Journal.
