Grain boundary sliding remains a dominant deformation process during creep in both nanocrystalline and submicron-grained zirconia. The level of segregation of Y to grain boundaries is reduced by a factor of similar to 2 in nanocrystals. However, a scaling relationship for compression creep was valid in a 3 mol.% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia with grain sizes in the range of similar to 65-400 nm, indicating the same deformation mechanism over this range of grain sizes. In the presence of nonionic block-copolymer surfactant, nanocrystalline zirconia particles with MSU mesostrucmre were synthesized by a novel solid-state reaction route. The zirconia particles possess a nanocrystalline pore wall, which renders higher thermal stability compared to an amorphous framework. To further enhance its stability, laponite, a synthetic clay, was introduced. Laponite acts as an inhibitor to crystal a growth and also as a hard template for the mesostructure. High surface area and ordered pore structure were observed in the stabilized zirconia. The results show that the formation of the MSU structure is attributed to reverse hexagonal micelles, which are the products of the cooperative self-assembly of organic and inorganic species in the solid-state synthesis system with crystalline water and hygroscopic water present.

Nanocrystalline zirconia was synthesized and used as catalyst support for methanol synthesis. The nanocrystallite particles have new physical and textural properties which are critical in determining the catalytic performance. Nanocrystalline zirconia changes the electronic structure and affects the metal and support interactions on the catalyst. leading to facile reduction. intimate interaction between copper and zirconia, more corner defects and oxygen vacancies on the surface of the catalyst. All these changes are beneficial to the reaction of methanol synthesis from hydrogenation of CO2. As a result. higher conversion of CO2 and selectivity of methanol are achieved compared to the catalysts prepared by conventional co-precipitation method. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Without introduction of any stabilizer, the mesoporous nanocrystalline zirconia with lamellar and MSU structure was obtained via solid state reaction coupled with surfactant templating method. The phase, surface area and pore structure of zirconia prepared with this novel method could be designed, tailored and controlled by varying synthesis parameters. The phase transformation was controlled by particle size. The mesostructure possesses nanocrystalline pore wall, which renders it more thermally stable than amorphous framework. The results suggest strongly that in solid state synthesis system mesostructure formation still follow the supramolecular self-assembly mechanism. The lamellar and reverse hexagonal structure could be transformed at different OH-/Zr molar ratios in order to sustain the low surface energy of the mesophases. The lamellar structure was preferred at higher OH-/Zr molar ratios but reverse hexagonal was at low ratios.

The use of catalysts in chemical and refining processes has increased rapidly since 1945, when oil began to replace coal as the most important industrial raw material. Catalysis has a major impact on the quality of human life as well as economic development. The demand for catalysts is still increasing since catalysis is looked up as a solution to eliminate or replace polluting processes. Metal oxides represent one of the most important and widely employed classes of solid catalysts. Much effort has been spent in the preparation, characterization and application of metal oxides. Recently, great interest has been devoted to the cerium dioxide (CeO2) containing materials due to their broad range of applications in various fields, ranging from catalysis to ceramics, fuel cell technologies, gas sensors, solid state electrolytes, ceramic biomaterials, etc., in addition to the classical application of CeO2 as an additive in the so-called three way catalysts (TWC) for automotive exhaust treatment. Moreover, it can promote water gas shift and steam reforming reactions, favours catalytic activity at the interfacial metal-support sites. The solid solutions of ceria with Group IV transitional-metals deserve particular attention for their applicability in various technologically important catalytic processes. Mesoporous CeO2−ZrO2 solid solutions have been reported to be employed in various reactions which include CO oxidation, soot oxidation, water-gas shift reaction, and so on. Inspired by the unique and promising characteristics of ceria based mixed oxides and solid solutions for various applications, we have selected ceria-zirconia oxides for our studies. The focus of the work is the synthesis and investigation of the structural and catalytic properties of modified and pure ceria-zirconia mixed oxide.

A polymeric precursor method based on the Pechini process was successfully used to synthesize zirconia-12 mol% ceria ceramic powders, the influence of the main process variables (citric acid-ethylene glycol ratio, citric acid-total oxides ratio and calcination temperature) on phase formation and powder morphology (surface area and crystallite size) were investigated. The thermal decomposition behavior of the precursor is presented. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of powders revealed a crystalline tetragonal zirconia single-phase, with crystallite diameter ranging from 6 to 15 nm. The BET surface areas were relatively high, reaching 95 m(2) g(-1) Nitrogen adsorption/desorption on the powders suggested that nonaggregated powders could be attained, depending on the synthesis conditions. Effect of MnO addition on microstructure and ionic transport properties of nanocrystalline cubic(c)-ZrO2 is reported. Monoclinic (m) ZrO2 powders with 10-30 mol% MnO powder are mechanically alloyed in a planetary ball mill at room temperature for 10 h and annealed at 550 degrees C for 6 h. In all compositions m-ZrO2 transforms completely to nanocrystalline c-ZrO2 phase and MnO is fully incorporated into c-ZrO2 lattice. Rietveld's refinement technique is employed for detailed microstructure analysis by analyzing XRD patterns. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis confirms the complete formation of c-ZrO2 phase. Presence of stoichiometric Mn in c-ZrO2 powder is confirmed by Electron Probe Microscopy analysis. XPS analysis reveals that Mn is mostly in Mn2+ oxidation state. A correlation between lattice parameter and oxygen vacancy is established. A detailed ionic conductivity measurement in the 250 degrees-575 degrees C temperature range describes the effect of MnO on conductivity of c-ZrO2. The ionic conductivity (s) of 30 mol% MnO alloyed ZrO2 at 550 degrees C is 0.04 s cm(-1). Electrical relaxation studies are carried out by impedance and modulus spectroscopy. Relaxation frequency is found to increase with temperature and MnO mol fraction. Electrical characterization predicts that these compounds have potentials for use as solid oxide fuel cell electrolyte material. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nanocrystalline ZrO2 fine powders were prepared via the Pechini-type sol-gel process followed by annealing from 500 to 1000 degrees C. The obtained ZrO2 samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and photoluminescence spectra (PL), respectively. The phase transition process from tetragonal (T) to monoclinic (M) was observed for the nanocrystalline ZrO2 powders in the annealing process, accompanied by the change of their photoluminescence properties. The 500 degrees C annealed ZrO2, powder with tetragonal structure shows an intense whitish blue emission (lambda(max) = 425 nm) with a wide range of excitation (230-400 nm). This emission decreased in intensity after being annealed at 600 degrees C (T + M-ZrO2) and disappeared at 700 (T + M-ZrO2), 800 (T + M-ZrO2), and 900 degrees C (M-ZrO2). After further annealing at 1000 degrees C (M-ZrO2), a strong blue-green emission appeared again (lambda(max) = 470 nm).

Nanocrystalline 8YSZ (8 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia) bulk samples with grain sizes of 20-30 nm were synthesized by Sol-Gel method and then densified under a high pressure of 4.5 GPa at 1273 K for 10 min. The method led to the densification of 8YSZ to a relative density higher than 92% without grain growth. Fourier transmission Raman spectroscopy suggested that 8YSZ underwent a phase transition from the cubic phase to a phase mixture (tetragonal plus a trace of monoclinic) after the densification, which decreased the electrical conductivity to a certain degree as concluded from the impedance spectroscopy.

We have investigated the crystal structures and phase transitions of nanocrystalline ZrO(2)-1 to -13 mol % Sc(2)O(3) by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. ZrO(2)-Sc(2)O(3) nanopowders were synthesized by using a stoichiometric nitrate-lysine get-combustion route. Calcination processes at 650 and at 850 degrees C yielded nanocrystalline materials with average crystallite sizes of (10 +/- 1) and (25 +/- 2) nm, respectively. Only metastable tetragonal forms and the cubic phase were identified, whereas the stable monoclinic and rhombohedral phases were not detected in the compositional range analyzed in this work. Differently from the results of investigations reported in the literature for ZrO(2)-Sc(2)O(3) materials with large crystallite sizes, this study demonstrates that, if the crystallite sizes are small enough (in the nanometric range), the metastable t ``-form of the tetragonal phase is retained. We have also determined the t`-t `` and t ``-cubic compositional boundaries at room temperature and analyzed these transitions at high temperature. Finally, using these results, we built up a metastable phase diagram for nanocrystalline compositionally homogeneous ZrO(2)-Sc(2)O(3) solid solutions that strongly differs from that previously determined from compositionally homogeneous ZrO(2)-Sc(2)O(3), Solid solutions with much larger crystallite sizes.

By means of synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXPD) and Raman spectroscopy, we have detected, in a series of nanocrystalline and compositionally homogeneous ZrO(2)-Y(2)O(3) solid solutions, the presence at room temperature of three different phases depending on Y(2)O(3) content, namely two tetragonal forms and the cubic phase. The studied materials, with average crystallite sizes within the range 7-10 nm, were synthesized by a nitrate-citrate gel-combustion process. The crystal structure of these phases was also investigated by SXPD. The results presented here indicate that the studied nanocrystalline ZrO(2)-Y(2)O(3) solid solutions exhibit the same phases reported in the literature for compositionally homogeneous materials containing larger (micro)crystals. The compositional boundaries between both tetragonal forms and between tetragonal and cubic phases were also determined. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Zirconia-based ceramics that retain their metastable tetragonal phase at room temperature are widely studied due to their excellent mechanical and electrical properties. When these materials are prepared from precursor nanopowders with high specific surface areas, this phase is retained in dense ceramic bodies. In this work, we present a morphological study of nanocrystalline ZrO2-2.8 mol% Y2O3 powders synthesized by the gel-combustion method, using different organic fuels - alanine, glycine, lysine and citric acid - and calcined at temperatures ranging from 873 to 1173 K. The nanopore structures were investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering. The experimental results indicate that nanopores in samples prepared with alanine, glycine and lysine have an essentially single-mode volume distribution for calcination temperatures up to 1073 K, while those calcined at 1173 K exhibit a more complex and wider volume distribution. The volume-weighted average of the nanopore radii monotonically increases with increasing calcination temperature. The samples prepared with citric acid exhibit a size distribution much wider than the others. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller technique was used to determine specific surface area and X-ray diffraction, environmental scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were also employed for a complete characterization of the samples.

Surface properties play an important role in understanding and controlling nanocrystalline materials. The accumulation of dopants on the surface, caused by surface segregation, can therefore significantly affect nanomaterials properties at low doping levels, offering a way to intentionally control nanoparticles features. In this work, we studied the distribution of chromium ions in SnO2 nanoparticles prepared by a liquid precursor route at moderate temperatures (500 degrees C). The powders were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. We showed that this synthesis method induces a limited solid solution of chromium into SnO2 and a segregation of chromium to the surface. The s-electron density and symmetry of Sn located on the surface were significantly affected by the doping, while Sn located in the bulk remained unchanged. Chromium ions located on the surface and in the bulk showed distinct oxidation states, giving rise to the intense violet color of the nanoparticles suitable for pigment application.
