Cooperative patronage: The National Smallholder Farmers’ Association of Malawi in Kasungu District

This paper estimates the determinants of farmers’ decisions to join a rural producer organisation, the National Smallholder Farmers’ Association of Malawi (NASFAM), in Kasungu District. Data for the study were collected in June and August 2003 using household-level questionnaires and stratified random sampling, where strata were membership status and gender. Probit analysis of 250 farmers shows that off-farm sources of income, distance of the farmer’s household from Kasungu District centre, age of the farmer, tobacco farming, education, household level land holding and gender determined the decision to join NASFAM. These results suggest that farmers should be informed of the potential benefits of participating in rural development efforts, and that rural communication and information infrastructure should be improved so as to reduce the costs of information access and transactions in general, if participation in organisations such as NASFAM is to be enhanced.

Strategic planning for dairy cattle: SWOT analysis applied to a property of a farmers' association in Dracena, São Paulo state, Brazil

The sector of milk production in Brazil is very heterogeneous (high-tech in large scale X family properties). This study aimed to develop a diagnostic as a basis for a strategic plan to face the challenges inherent in operating a dairy farm in property of a farmers' association in Dracena, São Paulo, Brazil. It was observed that the association needs a more efficient guidance in the marketing, production and finance areas, not to compromise the search for new markets and continued growth in activity.

Prawn Farmers Responding to Australias Changing Climate

This scoping study will quantitatively evaluate options for the Australian prawn farming industry to meet all or part of its energy needs using renewable technology. Modelling will be used to assess the optimal renewable energy investment strategy for the industry that can be adopted on a farm by farm basis.

Australian Prawn Farming Manual: Health Management for profit

The Manual is an easy to read guide for running a low disease risk prawn farm in Australia. Using the combined knowledge of Australia's leading scientists, prawn farmers, extensionists and prawn health specialists, this manual captures what is known about the diseases that threaten the Australian prawn farming industry and how the of disease outbreak can be minimised. Funded by ACIAR and developed in collaboration with the Australian Prawn Farmers' Association, the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, the manual draws on five years of research conducted across the Australiasia region. The contents reflect the knowledge of a wide array of internationally recognised researchers and the wisdom and research gained through the efforts of the Australian prawn farming industry.

Cooperativism, entrepreneurship and economic development: a linking theoretical model

Cooperatives, as a kind of firms, are considered by many scholars as an remarkable alternative for overcoming the economic crisis started in 2008. Besides, there are other scholars which pointed out the important role that these firms play in the regional economic development. Nevertheless, when one examines the economic literature on cooperatives, it is detected that this kind of firms is mainly studied starting from the point of view of their own characteristics and particularities of participation and solidarity. In this sense, following a different analysis framework, this article proposes a theoretical model in order to explain the behavior of cooperatives based on the entrepreneurship theory with the aim of increasing the knowledge about this kind of firms and, more specifically, their contribution to regional economic development.

Projeto de Produção e Processo de Pré-fabricação de Componentes de Bambu

The design and production process of the workshop shed made of bamboo presented in this paper is the result of almost two years of cooperation between Viverde Farmers Association, Universidade Estadual Paulista and Unisol. The system consists of rounded aroeira pillars, a roof structure formed by in natura bamboo frames and metal connections. The development of the parts and connections detailing, through the technical drawing of each component, enabled the development of standardized precision fittings aiming at optimizing the execution and saving time, energy and raw material on the assembly line. In this process, the creation and improvement of templates was necessary in order to facilitate the assembly of parts. The component assembly phases were recorded at the Experimental Laboratory for Bamboo and Wood Processing - UNESP/FEB. The results showed the good performance of the pre-fabrication process of bamboo components.
