Submission to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Environment and Heritage : Inquiry into a Sustainability Charter by the Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Innovation

The Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Innovation1 (hereafter called Construction Innovation) supports the notion of the establishment of a Sustainability Charter for Australia and is interested in working collaboratively to achieve this outcome. A number of challenges need to be addressed to develop this Charter. This submission outlines these challenges and possible responses to them by a Sustainability Commission.

Collaboration using BIM : results of cooperative research centre for construction innovation projects

This paper discusses the issues with sharing information between different disciplines in collaborative projects. The focus is on the information itself rather than the wider issues of collaboration. A range of projects carried out by the Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Innovation (CRC CI) in Australia is used to illustrate the issues.

Academic strategy planning for a university research centre

The Signal Processing Research Centre (SPRC) at QUT recently formulated an academic strategy plan. This paper describes the various factors that must be considered in undertaking such a planning process. It also illustrates the need for a university research centre to plan for its teaching activities as well as its research activities. Complementary teaching and research are essential to the achievement of the strategic objectives of a university centre.

Exploiting SNOMED CT concepts and relationships for clinical information retrieval : Australian e-Health Research Centre and Queensland University of Technology at the TREC 2012 Medical Track

The Australian e-Health Research Centre and Queensland University of Technology recently participated in the TREC 2012 Medical Records Track. This paper reports on our methods, results and experience using an approach that exploits the concept and inter-concept relationships defined in the SNOMED CT medical ontology. Our concept-based approach is intended to overcome specific challenges in searching medical records, namely vocabulary mismatch and granularity mismatch. Queries and documents are transformed from their term-based originals into medical concepts as defined by the SNOMED CT ontology, this is done to tackle vocabulary mismatch. In addition, we make use of the SNOMED CT parent-child `is-a' relationships between concepts to weight documents that contained concept subsumed by the query concepts; this is done to tackle the problem of granularity mismatch. Finally, we experiment with other SNOMED CT relationships besides the is-a relationship to weight concepts related to query concepts. Results show our concept-based approach performed significantly above the median in all four performance metrics. Further improvements are achieved by the incorporation of weighting subsumed concepts, overall leading to improvement above the median of 28% infAP, 10% infNDCG, 12% R-prec and 7% Prec@10. The incorporation of other relations besides is-a demonstrated mixed results, more research is required to determined which SNOMED CT relationships are best employed when weighting related concepts.

Wound Management Innovation Cooperative Research Centre - a new model for inter-disciplinary wound research

Wound research is a complex multidimensional activity most effectively conducted by inter-disciplinary teams that connect studies in basic wound biology, devices and biomaterials with clinical practice. These complexities have been recognised in a new initiative through the establishment of an inter-disciplinary wound research centre in Australia; the Wound Management Innovation Cooperative Research Centre (WMI CRC). Understanding pressures on the future of roads: A sustainable built environment National Research Centre Discussion Paper

According to the Australian Government, when combined with expected population growth and internal migration, expected changes in temperature and rainfall are expected to increase road maintenance costs by over 30 percent by 2100. This presents a significant future economic risk, in response, this paper will discuss the potential for roads to improve their resilience to the impacts of climate change and other key pressures. The paper will also highlight how such measures can inform state and national main road infrastructure planning and reduce future associated risks and costs.
