Much attention in recent years has turned to the potential of behavioural insights to improve the performance of government policy. One behavioural concept of interest is the effect of a cash transfer label on how the transfer is spent. The Winter Fuel Payment (WFP) is a labelled cash transfer to offset the costs of keeping older households warm in the winter. Previous research has shown that households spend a higher proportion of the WFP on energy expenditures due to its label (Beatty et al., 2011). If households interpret the WFP as money for their energy bills, it may reduce their willingness to undertake investments which help achieving the same goal, such as the adoption of renewable energy technologies. In this paper we show that the WFP has distortionary effects on the renewable technology market. Using the sharp eligibility criteria of the WFP in a Regression Discontinuity Design, this analysis finds a reduction in the propensity to install renewable energy technologies of around 2.7 percentage points due to the WFP. This is a considerable number. It implies that 62% of households (whose oldest member turns 60) would have invested in renewable energy but refrain to do so after receiving the WFP. This analysis suggests that the labelling effect spreads to products related to the labelled good. In this case, households use too much energy from sources which generate pollution and too little from relatively cleaner technologies.

The influence of external factors on food preferences and choices is poorly understood. Knowing which and how food-external cues impact the sensory processing and cognitive valuation of food would provide a strong benefit toward a more integrative understanding of food intake behavior and potential means of interfering with deviant eating patterns to avoid detrimental health consequences for individuals in the long run. We investigated whether written labels with positive and negative (as opposed to 'neutral') valence differentially modulate the spatio-temporal brain dynamics in response to the subsequent viewing of high- and low-energetic food images. Electrical neuroimaging analyses were applied to visual evoked potentials (VEPs) from 20 normal-weight participants. VEPs and source estimations in response to high- and low- energy foods were differentially affected by the valence of preceding word labels over the ~260-300 ms post-stimulus period. These effects were only observed when high-energy foods were preceded by labels with positive valence. Neural sources in occipital as well as posterior, frontal, insular and cingulate regions were down-regulated. These findings favor cognitive-affective influences especially on the visual responses to high-energetic food cues, potentially indicating decreases in cognitive control and goal-adaptive behavior. Inverse correlations between insular activity and effectiveness in food classification further indicate that this down-regulation directly impacts food-related behavior.

Nanoparticles offer adjustable and expandable reactive surface area compared to the more traditional solid phase forms utilized in bioaffinity assays due to the high surface to-volume ratio. The versatility of nanoparticles is further improved by the ability to incorporate various molecular complexes such as luminophores into the core. Nanoparticle labels composed of polystyrene, silica, inorganic crystals doped with high number of luminophores, preferably lanthanide(III) complexes, are employed in bioaffinity assays. Other label species such as semiconductor crystals (quantum dots) or colloidal gold clusters are also utilized. The surface derivatization of such particles with biomolecules is crucial for the applicability to bioaffinity assays. The effectiveness of a coating is reliant on the biomolecule and particle surface characteristics and the selected coupling technique. The most critical aspects of the particle labels in bioaffinity assays are their size-dependent features. For polystyrene, silica and inorganic phosphor particles, these include the kinetics, specific activity and colloidal stability. For quantum dots and gold colloids, the spectral properties are also dependent on particle size. This study reports the utilization of europium(III)-chelate-embedded nanoparticle labels in the development of bioaffinity assays. The experimental covers both the heterogeneous and homogeneous assay formats elucidating the wide applicability of the nanoparticles. It was revealed that the employment of europium(III) nanoparticles in heterogeneous assays for viral antigens, adenovirus hexon and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), resulted in sensitivity improvement of 10-1000 fold compared to the reference methods. This improvement was attributed to the extreme specific activity and enhanced monovalent affinity of the nanoparticles conjugates. The applicability of europium(III)-chelate-doped nanoparticles to homogeneous assay formats were proved in two completely different experimental settings; assays based on immunological recognition or proteolytic activity. It was shown that in addition to small molecule acceptors, particulate acceptors may also be employed due to the high specific activity of the particles promoting proximity-induced reabsorptive energy transfer in addition to non-radiative energy transfer. The principle of proteolytic activity assay relied on a novel dual-step FRET concept, wherein the streptavidin-derivatized europium(III)-chelate-doped nanoparticles were used as donors for peptide substrates modified with biotin and terminal europium emission compliant primary acceptor and a secondary quencher acceptor. The recorded sensitized emission was proportional to the enzyme activity, and the assay response to various inhibitor doses was in agreement with those found in literature showing the feasibility of the technique. Experiments regarding the impact of donor particle size on the extent of direct donor fluorescence and reabsorptive excitation interference in a FRET-based application was conducted with differently sized europium(III)-chelate-doped nanoparticles. À l’heure où l’industrie de l’enregistrement sonore connait un certain nombre de bouleversements, Internet apparait à la fois comme un responsable d’une crise du disque et comme une plate-forme de diffusion et de promotion de la musique enregistrée. C’est dans ce contexte de mutations des industries culturelles que sont les industries de la musique que les labels indépendants voient les possibilités liées à la promotion se multiplier. Notamment par le biais des sites internet que j’envisage ici comme discours encodé et diffusé. Ce mémoire explore deux sites internet officiels de labels indépendants de rap québécois à l’aide de la proposition de la présence du mythe dans le discours de promotion. S’appuyant sur la théorie de Barthes, mon analyse s’articule autour de l’étude de la signification afin de mettre en lumière la façon dont le mythe fonctionne dans le discours. En m’intéressant principalement à l’image et au texte, je mets notamment en valeur le traitement de l’artiste, de la création musicale et du label dans le discours.
