A prescription for computing the propagator for D-dimensional higher-derivative gravity theories, based on the Barnes-Rivers operators, is presented. A systematic study of the tree-level unitarity of these theories is developed and the agreement of their linearized versions with Newton's law is investigated by computing the corresponding effective nonrelativistic potential. Three-dimensional quadratic gravity with a gravitational Chern-Simons term is also analyzed. A discussion on the issue of light bending within the framework of both D-dimensional quadratic gravity and three-dimensional quadratic gravity with a Chern-Simons term is provided as well. The problem of computing the effective nonrelativistic potential U-D for the interaction of charged-scalar bosons, within the context of D-dimensional electromagnetism with a cutoff, is reduced to quadratures. It is shown that U-3 cannot bind a pair of identical charged-scalar bosons; nevertheless, numerical calculations indicate that boson-boson bound states do exist in the framework of three-dimensional higher-derivative electromagnetism augmented by a topological Chern-Simons term.

An algorithm for computing the propagator for three-dimensional quadratic gravity with a gravitational Chern-Simons term, based on an extension of the three-dimensional Barnes-Rivers operators, is proposed. A systematic study of the tree-level unitarity of this theory is developed and its agreement with Newton's law is investigated by computing the effective nonrelativistic potential. A recently proposed renormalization scheme can be used to deal with nonrelativistic potential scattering exhibiting ultraviolet divergence in momentum space. A numerical application of this scheme is made in the case of potential scattering with r(-2) divergence for small r, common in molecular and nuclear physics, by using cut-offs in momentum and configuration spaces. The cut-off is finally removed in terms of a physical observable and model-independent result is obtained at low energies. The expected variation of the off-shell behaviour of the t-matrix arising from the renormalization scheme is also discussed.

Three-dimensional quadratic gravity, unlike general relativity in (2+1)D, is dynamically nontrivial and has a well behaved nonrelativistic potential. Here we analyse the changes that occur when a topological Chem-Simons term is added to this theory. It is found that the harmless massive scalar mode of the latter gives rise to a troublesome massive spin-0 ghost, while the massive spin-2 ghost is replaced by two massive physical particles both of spin 2. We also found that light deflection does not have the 'wrong sign' such as in the framework of three-dimensional quadratic gravity.

A quark-diquark approximation is used to investigate the mass spectroscopy of the spin-1/2 baryons belonging to the SU(3)-flavor group in a nonrelativistic potential approach. The baryon spectra obtained are confronted with relativistic results and experimental data. Root-mean-square radii are also calculated. © 1993 Springer-Verlag.

The nonrelativistic problem of a particle immersed in a triangular potential well, set forth by N. A. Rao and B. A. Kagali, is revised. It is shown that these researchers misunderstood the full meaning of the potential and obtained a wrong quantization condition. By exploring the space inversion symmetry, this work presents the correct solution to this problem with potential applications in electronics in a simple and transparent way. © Electronic Journal of Theoretical Physics. We derive a NN*(1440) potential from a nonrelativistic quark-quark interaction and a quark cluster model for the baryons. By making use of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, we examine quark Pauli correlations in detail. A comparison with the NN potential derived in the same framework is done. This makes it possible to emphasize the role of quark antisymmetry beyond baryon antisymmetry and to discuss the use of phenomenological NN*(1440) baryonic potentials.

We study the relativistic version of the Schrödinger equation for a point particle in one dimension with the potential of the first derivative of the delta function. The momentum cutoff regularization is used to study the bound state and scattering states. The initial calculations show that the reciprocal of the bare coupling constant is ultraviolet divergent, and the resultant expression cannot be renormalized in the usual sense, where the divergent terms can just be omitted. Therefore, a general procedure has been developed to derive different physical properties of the system. The procedure is used first in the nonrelativistic case for the purpose of clarification and comparisons. For the relativistic case, the results show that this system behaves exactly like the delta function potential, which means that this system also shares features with quantum filed theories, like being asymptotically free. In addition, in the massless limit, it undergoes dimensional transmutation, and it possesses an infrared conformal fixed point. The comparison of the solution with the relativistic delta function potential solution shows evidence of universality.

We announce a proof of H-stability for the quantized radiation field, with ultraviolet cutoff, coupled to arbitrarily many non-relativistic quantized electrons and static nuclei. Our result holds for arbitrary atomic numbers and fine structure constant. We also announce bounds for the energy of many electrons and nuclei in a classical vector potential and for the eigenvalue sum of a one-electron Pauli Hamiltonian with magnetic field.

Signal grass pastures were oversown with four Leucaena spp. planted in hedgerows and evaluated for their agronomic productivity and ability to support steer liveweight gains. Each Leucaena sp. (L. leucocephala, L. pallida, L colli. nst. i., L. trichandra) was planted as seedlings into two I ha paddocks in rows 5 m apart, with I m spacing between trees. Cattle were rotationally grazed on the 2 replicates of each species, as well as on two I ha paddocks of a signal grass on y (Brachiaria decumbens) control, over a 243-day period at a stocking rate of 3 steers/ha. Mean presentation yield and herbage allowance of the Leucaena accessions over the grazing period were highest for L pallida (1100 kg/ha and 0.8 kg DM/kg LW, respectively), followed by L. leucocephala (700 kg/ha and 0.5 kg DM/kg LW), L. collinsii (700 kg/ha and 0.4 kg DM/kg LW) and L. trichandra (300 kg/ha and 0.2 kg DM/kg LW). Despite only moderate presentation yields and herbage allowances, steers grazing L. leucocephala and L. collinsii accessions produced the highest mean liveweight gains (LWG) of 0. and 0.56 kg/hd/d, respectively. While L. pallida produced the highest DM yields, it supported the lowest LWG of 0.36 kg/hd/d. The mean LWGs of steers grazing L. trichandra and the control (grass only) treatments were similar at 0.48 kg/ hd/d. The possible reasons for the differences in steer performance on the different Leucaena accessions are discussed.
