What Do Academic Library Deans Do?

A recent discussion apropos of nothing set me to a thought-experiment: what is it deans of library services (or, as it often the case when I’m introduced, deans of library sciences) do? If one were to write up a short list of some of the most important general attributes of an effective dean, what would they be?

Libr@ries : changing information space and practice

This volume examines the social, cultural, and political implications of the shift from traditional forms of print-based libraries to the delivery of online information in educational contexts. Despite the central role of libraries in literacy and learning, research of them has, in the main, remained isolated within the disciplinary boundaries of information and library science. By contrast, this book problematizes and thereby mainstreams the field. It brings together scholars from a wide range of academic fields to explore the dislodging of library discourse from its longstanding apolitical, modernist paradigm. Collectively, the authors interrogate the presuppositions of current library practice and examine how library as place and library as space blend together in ways that may be both complementary and contradictory. Seeking a suitable term to designate this rapidly evolving and much contested development, the editors devised the word “libr@ary,” and use the term arobase to signify the conditions of formation of new libraries within contexts of space, knowledge, and capital.

Uso de tecnologia e estratégias didácticas : A experiencia da carreira de biblioteconomia na Universidade Nacional de La Plata, Argentina

El trabajo analiza el uso del campus virtual bajo la plataforma Moodle que se ha instituido en el marco de la Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina. El mismo se emplea desde el año 2007 en el Departamento de Bibliotecología como apoyo a la enseñanza presencial de la disciplina. También se ha ido adoptando en otras carreras y departamento docentes dependientes de la institución. Se delinean cuatro modelos en base a los usos didácticos que se implementan desde las distintas cátedras: tradicional, de aplicación práctica, participativo e híbrido. Se realiza un balance sobre la experiencia pedagógica y didáctica, indicando las innovaciones y limitaciones de la misma

Friends of the library groups in health sciences libraries.

The Houston Academy of Medicine--Texas Medical Center (HAM--TMC) Library collected data on friends of the library groups from 103 health sciences libraries, using a mail questionnaire. Sixteen of the responding libraries had independent friends groups; seven had friends groups that were subordinate to a university group. The sixteen independent groups gave as their major purposes (1) to raise money for their associated library and (2) to develop support for their library. These groups contributed an average of $4,870 a year to their libraries, the money being used primarily to purchase rare books and working-collection books and to sponsor social events. The subordinate groups contributed relatively little money to the health sciences libraries responding to the survey.

A rural virtual health sciences library project: research findings with implications for next generation library services*

Purpose: The Shared Hospital Electronic Library of Southern Indiana (SHELSI) research project was designed to determine whether access to a virtual health sciences library and training in its use would support medical decision making in rural southern Indiana and achieve the same level of impact seen by targeted information services provided by health sciences librarians in urban hospitals.

Building a retrospective collection in pharmacy: a brief history of the literature with some considerations for U.S. health sciences library professionals

This paper argues that historical works in pharmacy are important tools for the clinician as well as the historian. With this as its operative premise, delineating the tripartite aspects of pharmacy as a business enterprise, a science, and a profession provides a conceptual framework for primary and secondary resource collecting. A brief history and guide to those materials most essential to a historical collection in pharmacy follows. Issues such as availability and cost are discussed and summarized in checklist form. In addition, a glossary of important terms is provided as well as a list of all the major U.S. dispensatories and their various editions. This paper is intended to serve as a resource for those interested in collecting historical materials in pharmacy and pharmaco-therapeutics as well as provide a history that gives context to these classics in the field. This should provide a rationale for selective retrospective collection development in pharmacy.
